An excellent Zoo for a days visit. We visit on just about every trip to Detroit, especially to see the red pandas. With the current covid, some of the exhibits are unavailable, but it is still a great place to visit. We believe the prices are in line with any zoo, from the entry fee, to parking, and even the food.As said, our main favorite is the red panda habitat, and we like just about everything else. We hope to see the penguins in their renovated building soon.We will definitely go again.
The lights are incredible. The atmosphere is magical. Very good distancing. The hot chocolate and other food hit the spot. Best of all the kids loved all the lighted trees and characters. Excellent evening! Great job Detroit ZOO. Even the beavers were out.p
Beautiful layout. Very large zoo so plan to be there early of you want to see everything. Must wear face masks now due to pandemic. Try to reserve online at least 4 days in advance for best savings on ticket prices. Parking is a pretty penny but we parked about a block away and walked to save the 8 bucks. Most of the attractions were closed when we went but we still got to see quite a few animals. For the price though you definitely want to call ahead and see if the attractions are being maintenance or if they are available. Wouldnt want to waste a trip on only being able to see half a zoo. Besides that kids had fun
We attended the Wild Lights event tonight. I felt very safe with the social distancing precautions. They have staggered entry times, everyone wore masks, and the lines promoted social distancing. The light displays were spectacular. Just know you are going for light display not animals. The animal exhibits are closed.
Always great to visit especially on a sunny Fall day during the pandemic. Buy tickets in advance booked for entry every 30 minutes, stay as long as you like, it keeps crowd way down which is great, only downside is restrictions to indoor exhibits, but still plenty to see. The outback Safari is cool, walking inside the actual exhibit where wallabies and kangaroos can walk right up to you.
Wow! Went on a somewhat cool and breezy day Saturday August 22nd. Most of the animals were moving more than Ive ever seen them! And Ive been here many times throughout the years. It was the perfect day to go to the zoo! There were people here but not too crowded... Enough space to stay 6 feet apart in most cases. Everyone wearing masks for the most part! Excellent experience :-)
We were disappointed.. there are barely any animals to enjoy. There are no vendors open. Even so, there could have been some help with making the atmosphere more festive than a city park.. like cant u play some zoo music inside the park or something? The peacocks are beautiful and roam freely! It just feels like a sad, under funded, city park. What can I do to help?
Nice place to take the family on a day off, as a BCBS member I received a small discount which saved me $20 in the end which was cool. Ample concession stands, a family outing of 4 can get pricey fast tho. Big Zoo with a good amount of Animals, the penguin exhibit is definitely the favorite but was closed during my visit. Definitely recommend for anyone with a family that needs something fun to get out of the house.
Many attractions at the Detroit zoo are closed either due to covid-19 or for maintenance. I paid nearly $100 for my wife and I you take the the grandsons which would be fine if the attractions were open. The zoo either needs a notice on their website indicating the closed attractions or offer a discounted price.
We love the zoo, but we recently went to the Wild Lights, Christmas light display and it was very fun! Lovely and some larger than life!
We visit every year and have always had a great time! Its our tradition to get a picture of the kids with the standing polar bear that we can look back on and see how they grew and changed every year.Todays visit was a little different than our usual trips due to covid but the zoo still felt like a safe relaxing place to spend time with the family during this hard year weve had. The animals are well cared for with nice living spaces that are always being improved on and expanded.I highly recommend bringing your family too the Detroit Zoo!
Great Zoo, very clean and beautiful! There is ALOT of walking but its such a beautiful area theres nothing wrong with that. But if you have young kids or elderly make sure your ready for them to walk alot. There are some great animals at the zoo and they do have some amazing enclosures! Some of the animals are free range which is pretty awesome! They also have a nice playground for kids to play on. The only real downside is the cost. Its a pretty pricey zoo and the fact you have to pay $8 just to park is a bit extreme. Especially when there are other zoos in Michigan that have free parking. I will say its a nice Zoo to do at least once!
I adore this zoo. Its nice and clean. Every person manning exhibits were kind and educational. A few of the exhibits have been vastly improved lately if you have not visited in a while. They have planted pumpkins and it was cool to see them growing, too.Plenty of benches, hand washing stations, and hand sanitizers are available. Its getting chilly so some animals will be hiding, but thats natural and what to be expected. Theyre living things. Some things are closed due to the actual literal pandemic were having, but its a pretty safe activity to go to because of reservations and plenty of area for social distancing.
This place is awesome and huge! Theres varieties of animals here that ive never seen in my own country. Once you get tired of walking, there are multiple benches you can sit on. If you are the kind of person who gets exhausted so easy, i will recommend going here when its not hot. Also, try carrying bottles of water with you to avoid dehydration.
Great time at the zoo! The staff is amazing at helping to enforce the Covid rules and very kind when they do it. We had fun and are really glad we have a membership.
Wild lights was amazing! Absolutely gorgeous! Everyone was very friendly. Got right in. Great experience.
Great time! Well done. Lots of holiday lights! Highly recommend seeing
I really appreciated the mask policy here. It was very reasonable. In certain busy areas and anytime you were near other guests, masks were required. Otherwise, you were allowed to take a breather as signs denoted. I was very grateful to be able to enjoy fresh air for at least part of the time anyway. The exhibits are really neat, I wished we had more time to spend there!
I enjoyed my visit. Different animals to see. The map is very easy to read and you can visit the whole zoo if you follow the map. I liked the lizards building. They have couple of restaurants only and limited accessibility because of the covid19. They also have a little shack where you can get ice cream, coffee, espresso and all kind of drinks and snacks. Overall, was a very enjoyable visit. Worth the visit
I went Sunday, August 9 th with my daughter and her boyfriend. It was 90 degrees and muggy. We enjoyed the zoo and the animals were very active. The zoo grounds are very clean as are the restrooms. I would definitely go again. I used to go quite frequently but both of my children have grown up.
The zoo has been great to visit this year with covid. We feel very safe!
Memebers, be aware! They limit number of people that can enter the zoo due to COVID, stating that you need to have reservation, reservation for the outdoor? That is insane! I will never again renew my membership with these guys!
One of the best place to relive as a kid Very nice zoo. There is a very good selection of animals to enjoy. The tigers are beautiful and were very active the day we visited. The ape exhibit is exceptional. Ive been to many zoos around the US and this is one of best. It takes about 4 hours to walk around, ride the train, eat, and go to the 4D theaters. This place is lit up during December, kids love to be in this place. One of the must places to visit in Detroit ! Nice place to hang out with friends and family
Always a fantastic experience coming to the Detroit Zoo! Even though the pandemic has caused some of the attractions and shops to close, the Zoo is still a fun place to hang out and learn about the different species housed there. The employees are taking the precautions seriously, and they are still showing their enthusiasm through their masks. The weather was nice, a lot of the animals were out, and the atmosphere takes you back to school field trips - the simpler times. The Detroit Zoo will always have a special place in my heart!
I have been to many zoos, and this is by far the best. So many animals to see. We literally spent hours here just to walk the entire park and see everything. The animals were up and walking around (the lady at the front gate said around 2pm is a great time to see some of the larger animals like tigers and giraffes because they like warm weather and will be out and about at that time). And they surely were. We were as close as you can be to the giraffes, got to see the tigers playing together, and the camels were up walking and drinking water, and more. Highly recommend this zoo. Its not boring at all!!
Very safe during Covid. Great day out with the family
Amazing zoo! They really care about the animals. I know a lot of people are upset because the elephants are gone but the reason for not having elephants was due to them not having enough space at the zoo for them and unfortunately a lot of zoos do not care about their elephants and only keep them to sell more tickets. Ive been going here since I was a kid and Ive always loved how much room they have for their animals, they really provide their animals with the best of care.
Quite enjoyed the half a day tour .The safety measures undertaken carefully by the authorities for the utmost caring of visitors during this covid relaxation period is excellent, commendable, impeccable. All the staff associated deserve congratulations. The zoo premises is a safe location for a day tour for pure joy, for even family with children.Parking area and the entry point are well kept for visitors comfort.staff are very supportive and well behaved . Animals, Birds, Amphibians all are kept healthy and well fed.Especially for children this visit is a rich learning experience. Since there is control in total number of guests who can enter all safety precautions are possible. Hand sanitizer, washed station are adequate.I dont have any hesitation in recommending a worthwhile tour to Detroit zoo.I would cherish the memories for long.
The Detroit Zoo truly cares about animal conservation. They make sure that all of their animals have proper space and a clean environment. I love supporting their effort.
Not enough things to see during covid, but did see a decent amount of animals. also ended up buying the $8 parking online, they didn’t even check to see if people bought parking. could’ve saved money there so that’s not cool. overall had a good time, but admission should be a few dollars cheaper and why pay for parking if no one looks to see if you actually purchased it?
Absolutely love the zoo. I really like the zoo lights as well. Its become a tradition for me and my friends.
Really good zoo! Some stuff was closed due to COVID but I’d say most things were open! Lots of cool animals that seemed pretty active!
Weather could have been better but everything was still great (mild mist/sprinkle). Not sure how it would have been if it were nice out but for this visit we were beyond social distance. A lot of times it felt like it was just my family and me. A little busier by the lions which were the most active I have ever seen. Hope to be back soon.
Love the open enclosures, you can see the animals up close. Worth the drive from Ohio
It was amazing got to see so many animals and food wonderful 100% would go again
Not to bad. Animals have nice size living space. Most animals doing nothing when extremely hot so dont except much on those days. In the winter animals are funner. Just as long as you can take the cold so dress warm and do not forget gloves. Membership is worth it especially if you visit other zoos. Animals will surprise you in the fall and winter. Dont be afraid to visit during these times because of the weather. Need more indoor viewing areas for animals not outside is my only negative about this zoo. P.S. Please get a honey badger.
Great place even during these unprecedented times. Love the Tiger Habitat. Nice to see up so close. Just wish people follow mask rule and not so rude. Dont stand right next to me if you dont have mask on! Souvenir prices seem to reflect their lack of business.
The polar bare, butterflys, and penguins exhibit was closed but I saw some giraffes that was fun the skeletons were cool
The social distance is nice, it keeps it from being overwhelmingly crowded. A lout of the exhibits were temporarily closed, and some of the exhibits had distinctly less animal life than when i was young. I missed out on seeing any amphibians entirely. No elephants or crocodilians... But the landscaping was beautiful and the Halloween decorations were great.
Beautiful lights and a pleasant and peaceful walk through the zoo, at least as pleasant and peaceful as a 5 and 8 year old can muster.
The animals are very active here. The tigers were right up against the viewing window, the monkeys were very playful and there is a 1-month old baby! The penguin exhibit is amazing. We went during COVID and were pleased to see all the safety precautions in place and felt safe walking through the zoo. I appreciate the online reservation system so we knew when we could go in and that it wouldnt be too crowded.
It was a nice zoo, however lots of Exhibits gone due to Covid. It was a waste of 50 dollars at this current time and 8 dollars for parking was unacceptable.
Always a wonderful time at the zoo! The red pandas were out in full effect and I like the different space for them in the back, seems to encourage play a bit more. The renovated tiger enclosure is breathtaking - they get so close, its incredible. I will however swear on my life there is no wolverine in this zoo. Never in my life have seen one in its enclosure.
Due to Covid... no train ride..most all buildings Closed with animals... was soooo very disappointed had to pay full price for less than half the zoo open... COMPLETE WASTE.. went with my bf her granddaughter and my granddaughter the girls were even boared.. just basically walked two and half hours seen a few animals...Recommend u wait till after covid.. or ZOO SHOULD ONLY CHARGE HALF PRICE..
If you are worried about going out, dont be if you are going to tge Detroit Zoo. Almost everyone was wearing a mask even while outside. The Zoo has places safe marks all over the place.
Love it here. Good times and good food! Awesome animals.
Loved the zoo. One of the best I have been to. The birds were left to roam around freely. Zoo was very well designed to retain the natural habitat of the animals as well as provide maximum visibility. Great experience!
It was easy to visit exhibits safely with others masked up and social distance markers on the ground.
Most exhibits were open. Limited capacity so no problems social distancing. Kids had a great time. Good to have something to do close to normal. Only wait was to get in reptile house because of capacity constraints, but only short wait.
Buy tickets n advance or you will be line forever like your waiting for a concert. NO penguin house. Its closed. NO polar bears either. Also closed. NO bears of any kind. Bring snacks bring water and come before 11 if you want to park remotely close. Most of the parking garage was closed...much like the artic ring of life. Wont be returning during this time of social distancing.
(This review was made during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020)Masks required! But there are plenty of places you can go mask free (designated areas). Some of the indoor exhibits are currently closed, but what is available is still a lot! You can tell all of the animals are extremely loved and well cared for, especially their farm animals which show neglect so easily! 10/10 will be coming back!
This place was amazing! There are so many different animals you can go to see, but be sure to wear good walking shoes is you plan on going through the whole park.
Good outdoor activity. Able to get a long walk with viewing the animals
Great day at the zoo! Appreciative that patrons were observing social distancing and that the zoo had areas well marked as reminders. Lots of sanitizing stations throughout. All exhibits were well labeled and informative.
A fairly large zoo with a lot of interesting stuff to see. Highly recommended place to visit when youre in town!
Great walk today! Had been hesitant to visit with social distancing and mask mandates, but felt very safe!
A lot of walking and a few people not wearing their masks where they should be. But the park was clean organized and the animals were comfortable. There were hand sanitizers everywhere. I seen them wiping down the benches and the doors. People were keeping their distance and it wasnt very crowded and all around nice day.
Totally worth an evening out, many packages to choose from the 4D movie was so much fun, movie was too short wish it was longer but worth it. The light display was awesome walked it a couple times you miss some stuff with crowds, the lines for hot chocolate some were really slow but there are different areas for sitting fire pits, food you can make a total evening go slow and enjoy it! Will no doubt do it again !
The place has changed alot over the few years or so. So much more to do and see. Had an amazing time with my family. There was definitely more animals than last time I visited with my family. Also, the staff that work there are out of this world amazing, absolutely made the trip better, very kind and sweet and very very helpful.
Great experience today. Low crowd with the system now. It made for a nice day without too many people. You could see everything you wanted to. The animals were moving about.
Nice clean zoo. Many different animals. The bears werent out when we were there. I also had questions & wanted to purchase a membership but was disappointed to see the office was closed.
Not only is it small but the first half is open fields; not animals. We went on a typical summer day and saw few animals. I get the polar bears not being out but the wolverines? The bears?Theres a whole section devoted to barn yard animals for crying out loud! Ive seen better displays from the 4H kids at the fair.
I havent been here before and I just didnt know what Ive been missing. It is really beautiful and magical and such a cool place to walk around. The cafes were open and there are hot chocolate vendors throughout the zoo. The reptile house was also open and we also saw a few of the outside animals. We were there for almost two hours and I was delighted the whole time.
A year ago id easily give 5 stars for sure, now 3 is being nice and thats because I didnt want to give bad review due to all the good times weve had there. Hopefully they can get back to how they used to be soon, right now it seems like just a shell of its former self, with so much shut down, much of which doesnt seem to make any sense at all, it definitely doesnt have the magic it used to. Would definitely wait until they can run at full capacity before renewing memberships.
Penguin house was still under repair & we were there too early for most food. We had a great time, it was beautiful, not too crowded & still nice even with masks & distancing. The volunteers were highly appreciated, directing people safely through exhibits & sharing their considerable knowledge with us. Thanks!
Great place but noisy from 696 freeway
Had a wonderful time at this zoo. Saw so many different exhibits and animals not at my local zoo back home. Definitely worth visiting if you like seeing animals of all different kinds. The penguin exhibit is breathtaking and the ability to walk trough kangaroos just chilling next to the pathway is pretty cool. I’m in love with zebras and they had beautiful ones there. For kids definitely the prairie dog exhibit is super cool. All around good time.
Lovely place! This was my first time visiting the zoo and it was during pandemic, so not everything was open or available as expected. It was very empty and captured a lot of great photos/videos of the animals.
The zoo is awesome. I went there with my wife and son and saw very beautiful animals, although most were sleeping lol. Will definitely return sometime
It was, is, and will always be an incredible experience each and every trip is an adventure to learn, grow & enjoy. A Gobtastic Adventure Land worthy to a cause. I urge everyone to go get some Vitamin Z every weekend, you just might meet a goblin.
Other than exhibits being closed to prevent any close interactions, still a beautiful zoo. Animals were all out and active!!
Posting for wild lights, beautiful and large amount of light displays; greatly recommend
A few things werent open due to covid-19, but still a beautiful day. The staff was cleaning and sanitizing often. Some of the animals were very active and some were lounging around. There were plenty of water filling stations, but not many food options. All in all, a great day out with family and friends.
Beautiful fall colors, friendly people who work there. Lady who greeted us in the bird house was so pleasant and helpful. Hope we see her again on our next visit.
It is usually always a great time going to the zoo! I feel that its better to go when its not so hot though. You will see more of the animals out and about that way. They have a park area for the kids. If it happens to rain while you are there, dont worry there are plenty of exhibits indoors! Although I have never ordered any meals there so I cant tell you about that. I always pack snacks and our lunches, yes, they allow coolers to be brought in.I love this place.
I came at 3pm on a Friday they close at 5 I understood that. But when we came the only thing we actually saw was the tigers when we asked they said they had already putting animals away for the night like what? I paid the full price of $19 for two people and parking. Yet I got to see only 1 animal. WORST VISIT EVER! Ive been here closer to close before and they have had every single animal out yet this time they took all the animals in at 3!
Nice visit. Wish a few more indoor attractions were open, but appreciated all the animals that came out to play today!
The Zoo light display was beautiful. They did a great job with social distancing.
The last few times we have been to the Detroit zoo a lot of the animals were completely missing in action. Most enclosures have multiple viewing areas, but even after making a few laps we missed several animals. The historical buildings are always interesting to see and are well incorporated into the park. The gardens as always are beautiful. This zoo is more of an interesting stroll through nature.COVID response: Having a designated time to enter and not having so many people was nice! The zoo is doing a great job with social distancing rules and requiring people wear masks in tight zones and inside buildings. People were complying throughout the park and there are security guards to help remind people who are not doing what is asked.
Quite an amazing experience. They had to lose some of their flagship animals... but they still have amazing animals there. I very much enjoyed this trip.
My mom and I came here for the Wild Lights. It was our first time at this zoo. Staff is friendly, Easy to get around and lights were beautiful. Lots of places to warm up, drink hot chocolate and grab a snack. I would highly recommend doing Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D Experience. It was one of the best parts for me. We had a blast and wasnt too expensive. I would say that the bathrooms need to be clean more often through the night. But overall it was a great time!
Absolutely the best zoo Ive been too. What I love about this zoo is that its A perfect size to walk. Unlike the Toledo Zoo my opinion is way too big.The penguin exhibit is breathtaking. It can be difficult to navigate wheelchairs when they are busy. Pack a lunch and go enjoy the best zoo around well worth the yearly pass. Also the yearly pass is a great gift for any family. Clean, safe, fun and easy parking.
Very nice zoo. The animals are definitely well cared for and fed well as there are a few that are on the chunky side! The park is always very clean and easy to navigate. There are covid precautions in place such as hand sanitizer throughout the park and masking in high traffic areas. Would definitely recommend!
I had a great time with my daughter and her boyfriend. It was 89 and very humid but the animals made us forget that.
First time ever being there. Appreciate the layout. Easy to follow path. Nice, usable and viewable set up of habitats for the animals. Arrangements of concessions and picnicing pavilion. Wasnt able to use any indoor display areas. Covid restrictions? However, price charged was still full amenities price. Appreciated the parking facility and proximity to the entrance. Online reservation of tickets highly recommended!!
Amazing Zoo, all of the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, animals looked very healthy and happy. Entire zoo was very clean and well laid out. A few exhibits were not open, but we will definitely return. Highly recommend this Zoo for a great experience.
They are taking this pandemic seriously. Everyone was really spaced out. Lots of sanitizer available everywhere. MOST people were wearing masks. Felt pretty safe there.
Love the zoo and almost a covid hidden gem. No big lines at any exhibit. Good with the bad. A lot of indoor attractions like the prairie dog look out holes and the penguin house were closed.
My Husband and I had a Wonderful time this morning! Absolutely not a problem wearing a Mask! There were designated areas to remove your mask and breathe! The Zoo also sells cool masks! We will definitely be going again! ️
It was perfect! Perfect weather! Staff was curiosity n zoo was clean. Bathrooms were vary clean. Lots of exhibits. My kids had a great time. Coolers with food n drinks allowed. Lots of bathrooms.
A little less fun then usual just because of the COVID precautions. No access to the polar bear tunnels/inside place.Overall, felt very clean and safe to be at. Everyone I saw had masks on, and the staff was very friendly still, but conscience of staying a distance away.
This was a neat zoo. They had an Interactive kangaroo exhibit where they walk around you. If the kangaroos arent moving- not good but we had one hop close. Disappointed the polar bear exhibit was closed.
Like a ghost town and most things were closed. Disappointing for my toddlers, but we finally got to see the Tigers and that was a major bonus for us! Cant wait until this covid drama is over so the zoo can thrive again!
Today was supposed to be a fun filled day for my children, husband and I...it wasn’t so much fun.. WAY too many people! I mean come on, this is still a pandemic and there were people on top of each other! People going under the guard belts to get closer to the viewing window of the Tiger Habitat.. Rude Karen’s making their way RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY 2 MONTH OLDS STROLLER SO SHE COULD SEE A BEAR THAT WAS CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM WHERE SHE WAS STANDING. The entitlement was glowing off this woman! I had the stroller positioned to where people wouldn’t get close to my family and I, yet here she came, violating our personal space. Families with NO masks on, and none in sight on their person. We could barely walk because it was so crowded today, what’s the point of time a time slot if your letting everyone and their mother in all at once!? And the BEES they were EVERYWHERE! Especially in the garbage cans! They followed us throughout the entire zoo! I understand, save the bees, but KEEP IT TOGETHER! Oh, and there was a random man with NO SHOES just taking a whole damn nap on a bench, had a kid just running amok, while he slept! People just standing in front of the cool off zone (fan) for long periods of time letting no one else cool off. There needs to be more staffing to keep an eye on these “customers” because it was seriously OUT. OF. HAND. This was my children’s first trip to a the zoo, any zoo for that matter and we were highly disappointed. We will most likely NOT be coming back to this zoo, but going to the Toledo Zoo as it is much better. For the price we paid to visit today, our experience should have been wayyyy better. If you cannot deal, with the pandemic, please stay closed until you can do it the right way, because this was just unacceptable!
I havent been to the zoo in probably 10 years prior to a few days ago, but it was just as much fun as I remember it always being. This time with kids of our own and couldnt have been better. Even with all the mask-wearing and social distancing going on, it was still a welcoming atmosphere! Some exhibits were closed due to COVID restrictions, but most of the animals were active outside of their homes. Our family enjoyed a picnic outside of the kangaroo exhibit and overall had a great time!! Looking forward to going back!
It was super hot out. The animals didnt have near by water to get to. They need running water fountains in their exhibits so they can cool down.I had family in from out of town excited to go. There were 12 of us. $14/person and 3 $8 car passes.More than half the indoor exhibits closed. We should not have spent that much money for all the good exhibits to be closed. My family from out of town was thoroughly disappointed and we cut our trip short.
My husband and I took my daughter here for the first time and we all had fun. It is so big that you would probably need half the day or the entire day to get through all of them depending. We didn’t get to see all of them but my daughter had fun. A lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes.
The river otters are so cute and active!! All of the animals seem happy and look very healthy. Cant wait to go back!
