Nice trails, but be sure to follow the markers. There are many unmarked trail crossings that will lead you astray if youre not careful.
Loved it. Will be back soon. Bring your camera.
This is a really great hiking spot. Plenty of nature to admire here, but the reason Ive given it a four-star is not the trail itself. To clarify: the trail is amazing and beautiful. Just one thing to look out for is that theres signs that plainly say: no shooting. Regardless of the signs, theres spent shell casings and litter found in the sandy areas. Theres another location, not too sure if its even connected to the Rome Sand Plains proper, but its up the road and on the opposite side. I went there once and found more spent bullet casings and junk used as targets. With that said, you might hear gunshots periodically in the area. I visited three times and my first and second visits I heard gunshots throughout my time there. My third visit I didnt hear anything and that was toward the end of autumn in 2016. Stray bullets are dangerous, even if theyre technically away from the trails. Id suggest going here when its colder and hopefully no ones there disregarding the signs for other peoples safety.
Enjoyable walk.
It used to be very nice for hiking and cross country skiing. NYS and the Nature Conservancy have totally neglected trail maintenance. They are overgrown with many fallen trees across and recently very badly floodedThe state DEC does nothing and the Nature Conservancy will not even respond.
Really cool to think some 10000 years ago these sand dunes were the edge of a beach for the ancient Lake Iroquois. Very incrediblycool!
Loads of birds, lupines, interesting mosses and lichens...this unique area is a must see!
Such an amazing place! And the history of this areas existence is even more amazing! Apparently, from what Ive read, this type of area only exists along shorelines with the exception of a small handful, and this is one of them! The trails are nice and clear. The smell in the air is piney and refreshing. Its worth taking some time out to walk the simple/easy short hikes. The trailhead is on Hogsback Rd. and has a nice parking little parking lot with easy trail access.Check this area out on a nice warm day for the best experience.(Im a bit bias being an outdoorsy person myself.)
As long as the other users respect the place, its a nice wild area to visit. Unfortunately too many people dump garbage there. Last time we went it had been cleaned up.
Good hunting not the best place to hike unless ya want to get wet creeks and swamps
Great place for hunting
Nice, secluded area fouled by people using it as a firing range.
Ive read somewhere that Rome was founded on April 21st, the 111th day of the year. And that Sand and Stone make up the essence of that which honors our Veterans in regards to various memorials. Perhaps this is because sand manifest the notion of and as well as the notion of the silica of a Basilica. And the namesake of Sandy is that of one who is the Defender of Mankind. So here at the Rome Plaines Area I thought I would share the notion of area as it relates to the lineage of the three Richards in our Kretzschmar family namesake. A father, a son, and a grandson who as so called dominant rulers are there to support Sandy in her various endeavors to manifest a an Innkeeper castle in which all who journey upon the mentality line of the linen can check in to on occasion and rest up for tomorrows adventures.
