If youre looking for lots of hiking paths with shade and access to wide open fields while listening to the birds chirping this is the definitely the place for you. Whats unique is they have an autopath which is just wide enough for one car and they were hardly any cars on it which allowed for privacy in nature for those that are handicappedI can pass for really easy to access, well marked and allowed for some strenuous activity for those that are interested in a challenging walk. There were a few ponds and streams with bridges which was pretty cool. I really liked that it had a diverse amount of activities for different age groups. Behind the educational center you could see that they were teaching kids how to make shelters out of natural wood and trees while also teaching them how to build fires and be conservation-minded. I would definitely recommend anyone thats here for vacation or lives here to check this place out even if you just want a place to go read a book and be quiet. The one thing I did not find impressive was that there were no garbage cans so if youre walking your dog and you had dog waste in a bag there was no place to dispose of it. Also I didnt find any dumpsters either. Other than the lack of trash cans it seemed to have every amenity you could want in an outdoor center.
I literally grew up here as a child and though I moved away from Richmond in 1984 I ALWAYS enjoy going to visit when I have a chance. It reminds me of some of the best days of my life and a much simpler time. My wish is for them to be around forever!
Wonderful family experience, so much to do and see together. Having the auto tour is splendid, being able to see areas with our entire family was really fun. We all loved the spring house and the raised walkway, it was like walking into the past. A perfect synopsis of nature untouched.
Beautiful place. We normally only hike the trails, but they are great
Relaxing place to take a walk and enjoy nature. The nature center has recently been updated. My kids love the outdoor nature play area.
Love the trails. This place is great to learn all about nature. It has all kinds of things to do and see.
69 still kicking took a long walk with an old friend to the arboretum today cant believe in all the years I hadnt been on the trail great time good company good conversation Ill be doing it again great for my heart
Nice walk on the trails! Clearly marked and clear ground. Definitely good for a quiet hike.
Hayes Arboretum is one of the most, if not the most beautiful place in Richmond. They are pet friendly and have quite a few trails with varying degrees of distance to choose from. They have hiking trails, mountain biking trails and an auto tour trail. My dog absolutely loves walking the hiking trails with me. The Arboretum was considerably larger when I was growing up but it still sits on a large plot of land and is still an amazing place to visit. The nature center is a great place for kids with hands on displays and knowledgeable staff. I have personally spotted deer, squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs and a large array of songbirds such as blue jays, cardinals, hummingbirds, ect.
Beautiful place to visit ♡
It used to be so much bigger. Fun for a nice little walk in the woods though.
Ive been coming here since I was a little girl and I love it every time. So many trails to hike, lots of wildlife and little to no trash in the arboretum which is always a plus. I definitely reccomend the arboretum if youre looking for some peace and quiet or if you have young ones youd like to have fun with, they have a nature center with activities!
The auto trail was pretty and we liked how they labeled the trees with their types. The childrens nature scape area was also pretty neat. The hiking trails were over grown and covered in poison ivy however, so we gave up on them pretty quick.
Peaceful and relaxing.
Good place to go for a relaxing drive through the woodlands.
Very nice place and a great place for kids to learn about nature.
A great place to take a family.
This place is awesome. Very friendly staff. Well kept grounds. Auto tour is really cool. Worth the 5 bucks. Only thing I could say on the downside, is better signage for the auto tour. Maybe bigger signs, more color to make it easier
Great trails!
Hayes Arboretum is a wonderful place to enjoy nature to its fullest. Simply put, the atmosphere there is serene.
Omg like being in the mountains
Great walking trails, have a program for kids in the summer, staff is very friendly and informative. They also have an auto trail if you are unable to walk so that you can still see the arboretum. My favorite spot was the woodland chapel, you can book for weddings, it is a peaceful setting.
Great place to go on a hike or learn about local flora and fauna. Good place for kids as well with lots of activities.
Beautiful place. Like the trails. The staff was very nice and helpful to us newcomers. Enjoyed my time there with my family.
What a beautiful spot with a great mission! Kudos to the Hayes family for continuing such a great undertaking. Worth the drive for a relaxing and educational afternoon.
Nice
They have wonderful classes. Their naturalists are very knowledgeable and wonderful teachers. They offer a free driving tour of the arboretum every day. You can get married in the outdoor chapel.
My kids love it! Very family oriented!
Beautiful, peaceful place with great running and biking trails.
Went with my fiance. We looked around the nature center, hiked the red trail and visited the gift shop. The honey and apple butter they sell is amazing and the nature center has tons of cool exhibits including a donated piece from a honey bee farmer. Theres a bee hive thats been made in between two sheets of glass allowing you to watch the work away. I definitely recommend it to any nature lover of any age and because of a driving trail even those with physical limitations can enjoy the property.
Great place for nature and to take kids!
Hayes Arboretum is a wonderful place to take your family for a adventurous hike through the most beautiful forest in our county.
The staff went above and beyond to help us with a project!
Its all free. You need to take kiddos!
Wonderful location to visit.
Beautiful place to connect with nature
Neat place to take a hike, play, take an auto tour, and more. I loved the place as a child and was happy to share the experience with my kids.

Most relaxing place in Richmond. A must see attraction for the outdoor lover.
Wonderful nature center, Friendly people, and great hiking trails. Perfect place for the family.
I grew up coming here with my father. It is such a beautiful, peaceful place, with lovely trails. Its a pity so much of it has been torn down to make way for shopping centers.
Wonderful place to bring the family. There is so much to learn about nature and local habitat. My children love the trails, and the nature center.
