I consider this a flagship park of the city of Phoenix. The grounds used to be part of the old indian school, hence the name. Its relatively large compared to other city parks. There is plenty of parking. It has a small and large dog area. Theres several monuments that commemorate various people and events. Huge amount of green space is available and plenty of shade from trees. It also has ramadas and restroom, although, those are close due to Covid. Homeless people frequent the park. Theyve never bothered or approached me. If you like fishing, there are a couple ponds to do it. The park is very clean. It seems there is a landscape maintenance team on site. If you havent been there take it minute to check it out. Its fun even if its just to walk around.
Is this such a great park that doesnt get enough credit. I wish the buildings on site could be renovated and turned into a museum or community space however the interior looks too far gone. I was using the space to workout with veteran population who expressed disinterest in the amount of bird poop that overtook the pavilions that provided shade. The small areas of water appeared at times unkept. Generally though its a nice large park with plenty of parking and multiple locations with plenty of room to enjoy for whatever your needs are.
With water fountains, lakes, etc this is a Very Large Jewel in the Nile of Parks. Come one, Come all, you would be glad you did.Thank you..for visiting this wonderful Phoenix Arizona metropolitan area Park facility.BE BLESSEDMr. RAY ANTHONY CUNNINGHAM [email protected]@gmail.com29Oct201721PM
Best park for me to go to in my area. It is very well maintained. It has many ducks and lots of fish for fishermen... The walkways are many and large for skateboards rollerblading and just about And just about any activity. It is it super clean park. Lots and lots of activities can be done here at the central Phoenix area at steel park. Also the memorials are of great historical value.. Its a terrific cultural area for everyone to visit
It was excellent, we had a dog singe jingle bells to us with their owner. Best Christmas Gift ever
Just a very relaxing place to catch some fish and watch a lot of birds. There are ducks Coors. Pidgeon even a heron.
Its the place where me n my love go to get some rest just hanging out and relaxing. Also where we meet up with friends and family.
I LOVE STEELE PARK! HOME OFPHOENIX INDIAN HIGH SCHOOL. MY MOM AND DAD GRADUATED FROM PI. ALUMINIS.. MOM AND DAD .......
This park is beautiful and has plenty of trails to walk. I definitely will be back. A lot of detail put into the park and history
A large park with a lot of amenities. Dog park, lakes, ducks and a wonderful memorial walk about that celebtrates the history and culture of the many tribes native to the valley. This has been a bit neglected as of late. Sorely needing landscaping and general maintenance. City Hall needs to budget more funding and bring it back to its original beauty.
This is one of the valleys hidden treasures! It has always been my favorite park since I was a little girl!
It is a seren place to relax or get some much needed exercise. But, most of all it is where I spent four years of my life attending high school. The best time of my life ever, lots of fond memories to reminisce.
Beautiful park, lots of space and picnic areas, great place to enjoy the outdoors and visit with friends while maintaining some social-distancing standards. Has reasonably clean facilities if you need a bathroom.
A very good place to pray and have peace.Feeling like the presence of the lord walking along side you.
I love this park!!! It’s huge and open. It’s full of memorials for Native American Veterans. It has enough trees to give plenty of shade dispersed throughout the park and lots of paved routes for waking and biking. Lots of really vocal birds. I see few homeless people, but I’m sure it varies. It’s a city park, so homeless are to be expected and they certainly have as much right to use the space as any other human. I can definitely see myself spending a lot time here.
Its a beautiful park with beautiful creatures. Could be better maintained but overall its a site to see in the night. I think with covid going on its a bit of a 3 star review but Im sure it was once even more beautiful definitely recommend this park if youre ever in the area of central and indian school
Its very beautiful and clean. Not as many Drunk Natives as I heard about.
My wife and I have been going here for years. Its great and the kids love it. Especially 4th of July
Only caught a few blue gills but the park is nice & there are a good amount of shady areas. I also love that they have a recycle trash bin
Beautiful park. Absolutely love taking my son here to run around and see the ducks
Short but nice walk. Community fishing available...
A beautiful place to walk. Wonderful to see so many people enjoying meals and conversations Im feeding the ducks and watching sunsets together.
In the heart of Phoenix lies this tucked away wonder. At 75 Acres, the park is huge but its not flat or boring. Playgrounds, ponds, memorials, rolling hills, volleyball, dog park. Its a beautiful place to get outdoors in Central Phoenix. Im there a couple of times a week usually.
My first visit to this park was actually quite uneventful and nothing to really write home about. My second visit there my boyfriend came along and showed me that I had actually missed quite a few interesting things and it was all due to judging it by first glance and not getting my lazy behind out of the car to explore. Theres a covered bridge over a pond that has very large fish in it, who apparently love slim Jims. Theres many different pathways you can utilize. All of which bring you to what was once probably a beautiful many tiered garden. Its forlorn and forgotten, but the different levels and the layout in general make for an interesting stroll. Theres also the old asylum which is a magnificent building and the veterans memorial as well.See, if I had just taken the time to explore and get to know the park, instead of judging a book by its cover I would have realized how interesting it was and the many fantastic things it has to offer.Life lessons yall because, honestly, dont many of us judge each other too quickly and harshly in our everyday lives? Take time out to get to know a person, place or thing before judging it. You never know what wonderful experiences await.
Great park in the heart of Central Phoenix. The pond is nice. The walking paths are nice. It’s a large park great for walks. Dog friendly. Feel safe walking around during night time hours. The 19th century buildings the City preserved are beautiful brick works of art in a city with so many new buildings. There’s a nice dog park in the NE location of the park.
Its a great park with a playground, dog park, fishing and theres a lot of festivals here. Good public washrooms and in a convenient location close to the light rail and theres a good amount of parking. This guy playing the tuba this morning was a nice treat. Theres plenty of walking paths and water contains with lots of grass.
My son loves it here. With the ducks and fish he gets so excited just to feed them.
Nice place to take walks, quiet and quite large. The large dog park lacks lighting and grass, but my little pup always finds other friendly pups to play with.
Its a bit flooded today and no rain lately so that was a downer but lots of parking, dog run, and other than the flooding, very nice park with good family feel
Big lake lots of people great scenery great parkinggood fishing I hear I did catch one nice channel cat that day . I enjoyed myself at thislake
Pretty gorgeous park to have lunch at, and go for a small walk around.
This park is located on 7th street and indian school next to the va. One of Phoenixs better perks lots of wide open areas, dog park as well as a lake. Restrooms as well, but check may be closed due to covid-19. My lady takes her dog to the doggy play area and I usually tag along with my drones or small park flyer airplanes while she hangs with the mutt. Its open from 6 am till 10 pm times change as well due to seasons. Its a big enough park that there is no problems with the homeless Ive never had any issues they pretty much stay to themselves when run into rarely. People are pretty cool in the downtown arena so you should have a pretty decent time. I rate it a 4.5 out of five.
So much history in this one little area. Love it here SO MUCH
Beautiful park. Watched fireworks on the 4th of July. Lots and lots of people. Vendors were everywhere. The whole Phoenix area seemed to be very clean for a major city. This place would be great for just a stroll in the park.
Huge park in central Phoenix. Lots of parking, benches, water, shade, etc. Countless food options around - a great place to go with your take-out order during the Covid times.
First time here, great for relaxation, family gatherings, picnics and just chilling. Saw lots of people jogging, biking and just walking around. Pretty calm place and pet friendly, great views as well. A must see if you are in the area.
Its a great park to go and enjoy a day by your self or with your dog(pet)Like I do there are good shady areas to sit or lay and its not to crowded so bring a ball or frisbee and enjoy the ponds, maze and the memorials. Its cleaned up a lot and it is because the locals are not letting people get away with any BS so mind your manners and be respectful of others and have a wonderful time at the park.
Great park occasionally hosting fun events. The park is really large and has a playground, dog park, grassy/muddy field for sports, and a lake for fishing (with a license). The park is in Phoenix so occasionally youll get some transits wandering through but overall this park can be a nice break from the city. It could use improvements by updating the dog park or fixing up the building located at the park.
This used to be a great park now .there are many crackheads. Dont bring your family here past 7pm .
Went to this venue for the Scottish Games. Very pleasant grassy areas with pools of water about. Shade trees are accommodating and plenty of restrooms. Centrally located, everywhere was handicap accessible and parking wasnt limited.
The park is peaceful, clean and well maintained, even though all the play areas all closed because of covid19, you are still able to walk around, fish and the dog park is open.
Such an excellent city park. Sunset views.
When I first read about Giant Bubbles and after making one myself I was to say the least overwhelmed and awe struck. I first encountered Giant Bubbles when I purchased a $1 Giant Bubble kit at a dollar store. I had never heard of Giant Bubbles and with the small kit I purchased I was able to make some pretty cool bubble tubes. One evening I made my first Giant Bubble and from then on I was hooked. The bubble was huge and because there wasnt much wind that evening it just hung there over the street for several seconds before popping. Not ever having seen anything like it I was blown away. It looked alien, something from another world. Since learning about big bubbles there was one spot that immediately came to mind to make them. There is a large and very beautiful park situated in Central Phoenix at Indian School Road & Central Ave called Steele Indian School Park. In the park is a large lake stocked with fish where many ducks, geese and other birds hang out. Just to the West of that lake is a small hill. I imagined that to be an ideal spot to make Giant Bubbles. I was right. The lake adds to the humidity which is essential to making long lasting bubbles. I go there several times each week usually around sunrise for at least a couple hours and if the wind cooperates I can make huge bubbles as big as a car that drift across the lake. In the early morning sunlight the bubbles refract amazing colors and rainbows. It is truly a sight to behold. So there you have it just one reason to visit this amazing park. As you have noted, this is a somewhat lengthy review so let me just thank you for bearing with me and remind you the next time it rains, the following morning swing by the hill West of the lake in Steele Indian School Park around Sunrise and have your socks knocked off.
Great park in a nice location! Loved my visit!
Love the ambience, great late evening walk or just place to sit and relax. I frequent and just unwind on the grassy hill
I take my dogs there almost every night. There are large grassy areas, which they enjoy. My Roscoe doesnt like any other dogs besides Lola, and theres enough space that I can walk term and still avoid other dogs...
Steele Indian Park, I’ve been hear few times until I walked the property I did not realize how the size of the Phoenix park. Location in central Phoenix host a lot of major events and Small runs as well. The buildings are historic leading back to schools that Dwight to interstate the native community lots of history to understand there. Park is historic educational and also provides a peaceful place to enjoy.
Good open space. Always clean.
We caught fish an turtles thereIts a nice place to take your son
Love it here. My wife and i married here 4 years ago.
Love the park but so many homeless people Walking paths and hey the park is clean will get photos soon
Always a good time when the fam and i come here especially summer nights around the echo wall is what weve come to call it :)
Beautiful lake, nice grass, good sidewalks, plenty of benches, covered picnic tables with benches, and bathrooms. So many fun events are hosted here!
Update: 5/2018Water from the water fountain was extremely cold and refreshing, considering the weather. What a hidden treasure in the midst of downtown Phoenix, accessible by the Metro Light Rail and plenty of parking. From the outside of Central and Indian School Rd, this place looks like one coveted by none. But go behind those gates and one is immediately transported to another time and another place! Not only is Steele Indian School park a place for relaxtion, but it is a Historical place on the map the holds so much value to the Native Americans of Arizona, and one everyone ought to visit and learn much.I passed this place for over a year and always wondered why it was called a park, when I never saw the gates open and I certainly never saw children there. I only learned more about this gem due to my intrigue of my first Native American parade last year. I intended to not only watch the parade, but hang out where it ended which was Steele Indian School Park.I was blown out of my mind with all that I saw. This is such a lovely compound graced with beautiful landscape to relax any relieve any weary soul. This place is well cared for and well monitored. There is so much land to that one has to take time to trek it little by little to get a taste of everything. There is so much water that surrounds one on this property. Its simply amazing! There is a little wildlife to observe as well. (*Warnings are out for coyotes*).Natural, historical, and photo lovers alike will enjoy this place. One can hike, explore, fish, walk, jog, bike (gridbikes available for rent), or rest. There is also a huge children park at the back, and further back are two dog parks. One for larger dogs and another for small dogs. How precious to even consider our four-legged friends. There are also two bathrooms around the park, and I believe some are located inside he newly opened building as well. (The one bathroom I saw was fairly clean. I could not take a picture for the privacy purposes.)Winter and summertime has its own looks. During the summertime I saw beautiful red and white roses blossoming everywhere. I did not even know roses grew in Arizona! All over the park there are water fountains should one get thirsty, though I dare say carry your own water bottle. If one pays attention to the first building that greet you inside the park from the veteran hospital side, on every brick on the lower half of the building, there are names signed by the students of the boarding school for Native Americans that was housed there many years ago. The building itself is a kept building from all those years ago so and well preserved.Throughout the year, public events are held at the park, and you can also plan your own event in the new building as well. There are locations for barbecuing, however that portion is shut off for now, and am assuming it is due to the weather. Some people complain of the homeless population but they bother no one. The stick to their groups and most are friendly, and there to relax like everybody else. If you like a little more serenity, the best time time to go is before 3 pm. The high school kids may be there after, and may sometimes be loud and rowdy. However, keep their own little groups and if you do not mind the little noise then it is still enjoyable.I encourage everyone to visit this place. Do not go by what you hear, explore it for yourself!!!
Awesome park overall. The have kids play structures, basketball hoops, a lake, outdoor gazebo type things, a large dog park and a small dog park, huuuge amount of open space, historic native American cultural buildings (sort of, I understand them to be the school Native children were strongly encouraged to attend), among so many other amenities. 10/10 would reccomend for long walks, bringing your dog, any sort of outdoor activities.
Great park for a walk. The Arizona heat can be rough, but the water from the fountains comes out ice cold no matter what
Kind of shady with lots of homeless. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but desperate times ya know ....I wouldnt leave my wife and kids alone here. But its pretty
Lots of Pokestops & gyms if you play. It is also a nice place to stroll around with your dogs.
I use the dog park when Hance is closed. Lots of nice people come to this poorly managed mudbog. Otherwise 2 stars.
Favorite place to come and walk a great place to bring your dog or dogs too
Great place to bring the family & dog to have a picnic!
Ive lived in Pix for more than 20 years and have never visited this park. What an error! Such a beautiful park! Filed with historic markers, plaques, and other observances. Well laid out, full of fountains, lakes and walking trails. A quiet bubble of solitude in the middle of urban Phoenix...its a great place for the kids or a date or the pets or just by yourself! Im definitely going to find another reason to visit again,!
Werent there during the Arizona matsuri 2020.... It was an amazing experience!
Nice clean park definitely a place to relax and feed the ducks
We went to the Matsuri Festival and it was our first time at this park. It was pretty decent. It rained the whole time we were there but from what I could see it was nice and big. There werent as many bums there as I thought there would be. The bathrooms were all locked up though which was odd but luckily the Matsuri Festival had brought some of their own. Nice little fountain there in the park. It was quite dirty with algae but Im sure they will clean it.
It took years before that run down old school finally became a nice park and central Phoenix sure needed it badly in the middle of town. I remember the Natives mostly Navajo jumping the fence to get a soda or better still a beer or two. This really is our own Central Park. When I went to Central High years ago it wasnt any kind of school or park either but a mess next door to my high school. Now its getting there. Looking closer to completion it is getting there. (Some day)
A lot of room to walk or work out. A couple playgrounds for the children and a dog park.
Nice place to take a leisurely walk.
Went for a festival and couldnt help but noticed how beautiful the park was. Lots of shade, parking and clean restrooms.Well thought out planning of the design of this park. Really enjoyed the visit.
Awesome place to take the kids for the Fourth of July. The food trucks are nice but they have a long wait to order and a longer wait for your food. Finding a spot to setup your food and family is not hard considering they’re a 100,000 people here. The fireworks themselves are beautiful. You can see them all around the park so they’re no bad places. Take the light rail, don’t pay the $20 parking just to wait In Traffic
We go all the time, we love it. Were are PoGo players and this park is perfect for that. Theres also the stocked fish pond for people who like to fish, lots of paved walk-ways, a park for kids, pavilions for parties and cook outs, and I love to feed the endless amounts of ducks on the pond. Perfect place for photographers, readers, families looking for a fun park for the kids.
Very big park well kept nice night time view of the city lights
A dog park, volleyball court with sand, park for the children...great views and makes for a great walk or run in the park
I visit here most week days to relax and contemplate, book view the nice landscape, lakes, dog park too. Children and fishermen trying their luck. Only down side are the Ill kept restrooms and occasional bum
Clean and safe with a security patrol and enjoyable but needs to have outside electrical outlets so that people can charge their devices
Here for the 34th annual phx 4th. Always a good time. Music water fim entertainment and fireworks!
Its a nice place to hang out if youre waiting for car repairs to be done
The park is huge, with lots of room to sit back and relax. There is a hill with amazing views of the park and Phoenix.
Went to the Phoenix Highland Games. The food was good and the booths were plentiful with something for everyone. I was able to look up my family clan and buy kilts, pins, jewelry, blouse, boots, and a scarf with my family clan tartan. Best of all were the Highland Games and Scottish bands.
Love taking my dog here for years now....seems to not be as clean as it used to but we still enjoy going
Very beautiful park. I was in Phoenix on Vacation and came across this park. It had nice walkways, is dog friendly, and seemed to be quite safe.
I got to feed the ducks and have breakfast with my husband and pooch!!
Huge beautiful park. Love it
Nice park with a nice water feature in the middle. Plenty of parking
One of mine & my familys most favorite parks to come to! Its very clean & spacious! Love feeding the ducks & visiting the swing sets at the playground! Climbing up the hills is also lots of fun with the kiddos! We always have a wonderful time here!!
This was the first time Ive been to this park. It was a ton of fun and my son had alot of fun
Very Nice people and Beautiful Park. There are friendly ducks, Turtles, and Vistors. Its needs some people to pick up the trash and clean the pond every once in a while
I love this park, its so relaxing I can view people fish in the lake, walk around and wacht the ducks and birds, the squaw peak mountain its also visible from the park it is amazing. I enjoy my time there.
Great park to enjoy an afternoon trying to fish, walking or just relaxing while the kids play in fields or playground. Family friendly.
Great park! Whether attending a festival, taking a stroll or having a day out.
Family time! We love this park and our princess loves our daily 7am trip to feed the ducks and our Sunday 6pm bbq with the entire family
Natural and fun space, go and explore the great outdoors. Treat yourself you will be glad you did.
This park was absolutely gorgeous! I attended the Dia de los Muertos Festival and it was so much fun. So much culture and beautiful women! I love it! The park itself has a beautiful hill with steps on one side and the kids like to roll down the other. I recommend coming here for parties. There are so many photo ops here, its incredible!
Not a bad place to catch Pokemon! I also take my dog here fairly regularly (they have fenced in small dog and large dog areas). Theres a cute little pond in the middle of the park that apparently you can fish in? Oh, and Ive never had any trouble finding parking.
I love this park. Its a hidden gem, Im sure most Phoenicians dont even know its here. I came upon it by accident one day when I was killing time. Peaceful, beautiful, well kept, and so interesting!
The views are great I love the place but they havent done maintenance in a while the water that used to flow through the middle of the park is no longer functional they have huge weeds all over garbage all over it has a cool desert area that had cool spaces to sit and just spend time and an infinite water fall. Its overcrowded with homeless people now they keep their carts full of junk every where. Definitely not a safe place to let your kids run around by themselves.
Enjoyed walking around and seeing the little rabbits and chipmunks, and the old buildings.
