I just discovered this attraction a few days ago and while the path and overall area is very clean and relaxing, the very young kids present at the cave as well as the teenagers who were banging rocks on the metal fence around the cave and tossing rocks inside the fence and talking loudly not only took away the serenity of the environment but scared the bats and kept them from coming out except in small, staggered groups. It sounded like a school cafeteria out there. There are signs that mention the bats need for a quiet environment but little consideration was given by the teens or the adult parents of the young children who shouldve corrected their kids so that everyone couldve appreciated the full experience. Aside from that interruption, once the kids left, the calm quiet just after sunset with mild temps was a great way to end the day.
Neat experience. Kids loved it..however need better directions and markers pointing to the spot. Was very hard to find. MapQuest takes you to a residential area. End of summer so not a lot of bats but saw quite a few! Still fun!
How can you not give 5 stars to this. While we didnt see thousands of bats we saw a few hundred and the bonus was, what I think were a few peregrine falcons on the hunt. One falcon, sadly for the bat, nabbed one in a dive. Falcons gotta eat too. Check it out if in Phoenix over summer.
We got there around dusk and there was already about two dozen people gathered in different areas waiting. Almost immediately the bats started coming out a little at a time. And thats how they left their cave. There was no mess cloud. The concrete spillway directed them out and the fence directed them over our heads. I never knew this existed and Im glad I got to see it.
Although there werent a ton of bats the night we went it was all very interesting & fun to have bats flying closely overhead. We will definitely go another time when there are supposed to be more bats. An especially get way to get out of the house to do something in 2020.
You can park at the corner of Camelback and 40th street... Make sure you get on the north side of the canal, go to the Chelseas kitchen side of the canal, then go west, walk the half mile and it will be on your right.. Very cool, then watch the canal, the bats fly above the water eating the bugs. Very cool, worth the the walk.
This was the coolest thing to ever witness. Thousands of bats flew out of the cave. Little by little, they just kept coming.__________________The last time we tried to see them, there were people with loud children and adults were shining a flashlight into the cave. Just being rude and inconsiderate the entire time they were there. Some of those people left their garbage behind. Some guy brought his drone and not 2 minutes after he launched it, it landed in the ramp that heads down to the bats. Its all fenced off but he managed to get his kid in there to retrieve the drone. And we wonder where todays youth gets their bad habits from.Ugh!
Easy walk along the canal, nice mountain views, bats will fly low and close to your head and can be seen hunting on the canal into the evening
The Batcave is actually directly north and across the canal from where Google Maps directs you. It is not on Coulter Street Google Maps please correct this.
Be mindful which side of the canal your on. Parking is in neighborhoods f.y.i.
Super cool. Hit this place at sunset during the summer months.
Everyone has to go here at least once. Bats are awesome
Need to arrive just before sun set or sun rise to see all the bats. Bring water to drink its hot.
Bats were cool. Kinda hard to see. Went last Sunday around 730, bats didnt show up until 815 ish or later. Because of dusk I had to focus my eyes to see them. Theyre kinda smol and I need glasses lol. Was cool though, probably saw at least 300+
I wouldnt be surprised if you got bitten. That would be awesome!!!
Speak to someone that went before you go to get the exact times and location. The place google maps took us to was fenced off with no access.
Nice location, secluded, calming.
Google sent us to the south side of the canal the first night so the next night we parked at 40th St and Camelback to walk on the trail on the north side of the canal. The area is fenced off and marked so you cant miss it. A wheelchair can make it in, just remember the trail is sand. There are no available restrooms. Mexican Free Tail Bats can fly up to 60 mph so photos are tough to take, try making a video of them. We got there about 30 minutes prior to sunset which was perfect. You will walk back in the dark so take a flashlight. This is a child friendly event each night in the summer and is amazing to watch.
It was awsome i loved seeing all the bats its best to walk west of 40th st and callback and walk north its a bit of a walk but once it hits about 7:15ish youll be so happy but if thats to far we walked on the south side on culture we werent close to the gate but we saw so many bats so awsome i loved it im going back again the only problem is photos are hard to get because there so small but seeing all of them is awsome
This is a pretty unique and cool thing, and a bit of a hidden gem. I had some family in from out of town and brought them, and it was really cool! It is (obviously) hard to see the bats in the dark, so its best to come right before sunset, just as they start to leave the cave.
A great free family outing to see one of the most amazing movements of animals left on Earth. The bats will silently exit their roost and steam into a river in the sky. Watch for raptors looking for a quick meal as the first bats exit. We got there about a half hour before sunset and the bats took about 30 minutes to exit the tunnel.
Fun for the whole family just be respectful please!
Cool if you can find the sweet spot. Maybe better with official parking, Im sure the residents of 37th place dont love visitors parking cars in front of their homes all night long. Plus it felt awkward just as a visitor doing so
Cool local attraction. Low key nothing spectacular but something worth seeing. Great place to take the kids.
This is an amazing Bat cave, when I read the importance of bats in life I was surprised by how important they play a role in life, it was an amazing day to be there today. The weather and the view of the praying monk Mountain was just perfect, the Standford drive from 32nd st heading east its a must do if you want to see the praying monk and get to the bats cave, I didnt see the bats caming out of the cave but it was worth the time there, I think the wheather and the time was not time for them to come out of the cave. There is a beautiful canal with flowers by the bats cave.
We were here may 21st and there was a lot of bats that came out. It not like the movies but it was a lot that came out. Come 20 to 30 mins before sunset and stay 20 to 30mins after sunset. One came out at sunset then they all slowly started flying in and out, then they all started flying out and staying out. Awesome experience for sure!
The bat cave was great. Arriving before sunset worked out perfectly. Hundreds of bats and a very cool experience.
Want the best place to stand??Want bats flying just a foot over your head? What youll want to do is stand on the south side of the bat cave, maybe 15 feet east of the cave. That is where they fly.If youre at least 58 you can even stand up on the fence, and put your head in the opening between the fence tops (theres a gap every dozen feet). Dozens of bats will whiz right over and next to you.People who were standing right over the cave and on the north side thought they only saw a dozen bats. There were hundreds flying over and next to us.Parking is another trick. Google maps says you should park on the south side of the canal. Thats a mistake. Instead park in the residential cul-de-sac outlined in my photo. Then you just take the stone path to the cave. Very close and simple.Want extra fun? Bring a blacklight to see a scorpion on that path on your way back.
Meh... pretty unimpressive overall. I was really expecting a giant swarm of bats but what you get is small batches of bats flying out at a time and a bunch of mosquito bites... Cool if youre in the area but not worth going out of your way for.
The bats are really small. Theres not a lot of them. They mostly wait until its too dark to see them to come out. They are really fast, so no pictures. The south side about 10 ft or so from the corner is the best spot for having them fly really close to you if you stand back a bit from the fence. Kids will whine the entire time while waiting for them to start flying out. Most people will be on their phones waiting. Youll maybe at most see three fly out at once. Its an experience, but not one youll want to repeat.
Great place to walk the dog
Hopefully we were just too early in the season. There were fewer than half the number we saw last year in late summer. It was still interesting.
If you are in the area and a fan of nature or wildlife, I definitely recommend taking some time one evening to check out the bat cave. The crazy thing to me is how many locals do not seem to be aware of this interesting phenomenon. For detailed information to the location, I would recommend checking out Gina L. or T.T.s review. I used the address they provided of 5080 N. 40th St to find the location which is a business parking lot. If you google it before you go, apparently there is a neighborhood also near it that you can park in and walk to as well.We went on 7/3/19 and sunset was at 7:42PM. Some bats popped in and out a bit, but I would have to say we really didnt start to see any until after 8PM. Ginas review of just a couple of days prior to when we went (which I used for assistance, thank you!) said they seemed to come out closer to sunset for her. I think they came out later because there was a very loud family running up and down, yelling, and shouting very loud leading up to sunset. They were so loud that many of us were getting upset and asked them to be quieter. The response we got was We have been here plenty of times, dont worry, the bats will still come out. Lucky for you to get the experience, but for some of us, this is our only chance. I truly believe the bats would have come out sooner had they been quieter. It was still really neat to see the bats when we did, but since they came out later, it was darker, and harder to see them, and almost impossible to capture them on film (when days before, videos uploaded were might lighter out).If you can, walk to different parts of the cave for other views as some angles offered better lighting and views than others. At one point, it was so dark, we couldnt see much so we decided to walk along the canal back to our car. From that angle, we were afforded an incredible view of the bats; much better than we had been seeing. So if you can, try walking around the area for multiple viewing angles. I know the three of us were a little disappointed at first since it was hard to see the bats since it was so dark, but on the walk back, we really could see the swarms of bats and it was incredible.
A hidden gem in the middle of Phoenix! This is truly one of the best attractions in town, and free at that. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes before sunset and stand near the access ramp at the East end of the viewing area for the best experience. You miss a lot by standing directly above the cave.Stay quiet and keep your mouth closed. Dont bring any food with you. When the bats are flying, it may be a bit dirty under the flight path. It doesnt smell, but just take precautions.Whole show lasts about 30 minutes with a 5-10 minute peak where the majority of the bats take flight.
Mid July, bats started leaving the cave around 730pm (dusk). Continued for about an hour. 5000-15000 bats. Definitely an amazing sight in the middle of Phoenix.
Ive seen this before and always thought it was a flood control set-up. Or is it a flood control set-up that happened to meet bats needs as well?
Maybe someday Ill check it out
Dont go expecting The Dark Knight. Its not as dramatic as I expected but still a very cool experience I plan on repeating.
Batts are only there may - june
Not a lot of activity between 730-8pm on Wed 7/25/19. Still a neat experience and area to visit
Pretty interesting to see. To set expectations you wont see giant flocks of hundreds of bats exiting the tunnel at once, but a steady stream of 2-3 up to 10-20 at a time leaving and swooping over your head. Google Maps directions take you to a dead-end on a residential street on private property. Dont go there. Get to the other side of the canal, off E Stanford dr and N 37th Place. theres a public entrance to the area at the end of 37th place. Just be mindful of parking on the street there. Dont block homeowners driveways. Might recommend bringing a bag chair. Just keep the noise down once there and enjoy.
Not really a tourist attraction. Its a runoff tunnel by the canal. Although you can see some pretty sunsets. More of a dog walking spot that anything to see for out-of-towners
This was every bit as cool as I thought it would be and we are so happy we went!
Show up early, try to stay quiet, and enjoy the show. Bats seem to be flying just after sunset.
It was awesome once we figured out where to go.
Fun experience! Parking was horrible and finding it can be tricky if your not a local
The location is fenced off so you cant even see any bats or get remotely close.
It was very very cool my first time there love bats
You definitely need to be right up close next to the tunnel exit to fully experience the bats exiting. Be there at sundown. If driving, even though the place Google Maps takes you to on the south side of the canal is probably as close as you can physically park to the bats, it is a residential area and puts you on the wrong side of the canal. You have to still walk 20+ minutes down the canal to 4th Street and then back on the other side. I would recommend finding a place to park on the north side of the canal.
Such a cool experience and highly educational too.
Address is 5244 N 36th St Paradise Valley, AZ 85018 United States
Great place to chill and watch the bats but BEWARE sometimes they are a no show. One of those places where you have to go several times to get the full experience. Its off a popular canal trail. Lots of people, real popular with the gay crowds.
Scary bats
Amazing spectacle. Go just before the sun sets and stick around until it is completely set and youll likely see tens of thousands fly out of the tunnel. Be quite while youre there waiting though because being loud can scare the bats and they wont come out.
We are definitely glad we went to see it. Parking was a bit confusing. The area marked on Google maps is around a bunch of businesses that have no parking signs everywhere. We may have overlooked any parking marked for the cave. Its a short walk down a nice path from the parking spot. Super easy to find.
Just a very very cool experience. This is a secret treasure I think of the city that everyone should experience. Although its hidden away and a little hard to find once you get there and the bats start coming out you can stand beside yourself in awe
A little anticlimactic, but still really cool. Dont expect a huge cloud of bats to emerge, but if you stand at the end of the drainage canal, lots of bats come flying past you as they search for their breakfast. Dont expect a cloud of bats or a Batman experience. Still pretty cool.
It is seasonal for the number of bats...There were not a ton tonight...maybe 100-150 total...
Fun place
Very cool experience- even though it was late in the season for them, there were a LOT of bats to watch coming out.
We must have went at the wrong time of year, however we still saw a good bit of bats fly out. We waited a pretty long time, and it was neat I was hoping for a wall of bats to black out the sky.We will be heading back during the right time of year, to try again.
The bats come out at dusk. Its kind of a hit or miss. Sometimes there is a lot and others times just a few. It is also a walk from the Bat Cave parking, but nothing terrible. Make sure to stay quiet and hope for some bats!
Arrive around sunset, bring a chair and water and watch these cute, stinky little bats swarm and feed!
Dont leave early. The bats will come
Wait until its past sunset just before it gets really dark for the bats to come out. We almost left because we thought that the earlier rainstorm kept them in, but it just wasnt dark enough. It was beautiful and then we could see many skimming the canal. I only wish we had brought binoculars.
Arrive at dusk. Bats emerge shortly after, at first just a few then a pretty regular flow like a dozen at a time every 10 seconds or so for the 10 minutes we were there. Eerie quiet as they dont really make any noise. Summer months only I understand.
If you have a love-hate relationship with bats (like I do!), this is not to be missed.
Later on in the year is better for bat watching
Absolutely amazing to see! A must visit place for anyone with kiddos interested in animals!
It was cool. Local spot for bat watching lol showed up around 6:00. Bats came out around 7:00 pm.
Not very well known, but let me tell you it is a hidden gem. Very fun, free outing. Make sure you go at the right time if year to see the bats.
Came at 7:10 waited till 8:06. No swarm. They came out 1-3 per time at most. Doesn’t really worth it.
Beautiful place. The ducks are adorable!! Quack quack!! Seashells are a must to see!!
One of the best birthdays Ive had, yet...
Amazing. So many bats, they flight so close. Beautiful location. Nice signage. Good learning experience.
Such an amazing experience!
Came to see in wrong season. Able to see in summer evening
So cool! A Phx secret gem. Even if you dont like bats its very impressive to see at sunset.
To the Bat Cave! A little hard to find but it was worth it. Even out of season saw plenty of bats. Very cool!
A legit bat cave, you cant enter though. Not legally, anyway, and without hopping a small fence that happens to be lowest at the corner closest to the canal.Best to view anywhere from a half hour before sundown to sundown.
The fur babies LOVE walking this path!! Beautiful views and energy
Fun evening outing just before sunset. I never knew we had such a colony in Phoenix.
There is no bat cave here. Strictly upper middleclass residential. Bats are ling gone.
If you are into nature and wildlife you should definitely come out when the bats are here to watch them come out.
So cool, I went back in May, and there were a lot of bats even that early into their migration. A must see for out of town visitors
Smells bad but looks cool
Its hot during prime viewing months. Bring water. Be patient. Sometimes there isnt many bats.
Really cool. Lots of bats.
