Really cool little cave on the wissahickon trails. Sometimes you can see some ritual stuff inside. Pretty cool.
The cave is just ok. But the park is AWSOME! It is definitely worth the hike to see the cave... But its just a small man made cave
An interesting place to stop along the trails. Dont even think of using it as a bathroom you will be caught.
Its cool, i can imagine someone live in there long time ago
This is the nicest Hermits Cave Ive ever seen. The decor is nice
Park at the Hermotage and it is an easy quarter Mile walk. Its not a cave, but a rock building in the hill.
Can you camp out here? And is the area safe? Iff yes, plz press like.
While hiking the lower Wissahickon trails we went through the Hermitage area. Back in the late 1700s an artist community resided in the area. Read the markers at the top of the trail. Very interesting. Anyway, this cave is still there. Very strong, my guess it was built in the last 75 years. No way it is over 200 years old.
I have lived in Philadelphia my whole life and always heard about the Hermits Cave. Shame on me for waiting until I was 41 to explore it!
Nice landmark.
Great place to go with your family
Come here and read the Stone Monolith and you will then understand the story of Fraü Kelpius The Roscrucian Monk and The Legend of The Hermits Cave!
Had no place this existed until the dog I was walking led me here..,. apparently this was a doomsday shelter for 40 people back in the early 1700s.. classic philly
Awesome, but tons of creepy bugs that you dont see til you get inside
I was looking for a place to go near Philly after getting food. This is an amazing park where you can bike or hike. The trails are very very well maintained and are accessible from multiple areas. I would recommend this as an afternoon trip or an early morning trip. There are so many cool places to see and it is very clean.
Nice walk but your car will get broken onto. They smashed my window and took everything. Dont park on Hermits lane. Police told me they get alot of calls there for vehicles being broken into while your away on the trails. Theres broken glass all over that street where youre suppose to park. Wishes I had noticed it when I parked. And to the thief. ..the police got a nice clean finger print of yours. Hope karma hits you hard.
It was really fun to find this place with no map or trail written down for you to follow. I went into the cave. Its worth it to find it! DO IT!
Very cool! old history here!
A fun historical thing to check out on your hike.
Fun place. Interesting place to spend afternoon family friendly
A definite stop when you’re in the area.10 minute hike from the main road to get here. There is a nice stone plaque with some basic history explaining the cave location.Do some independent online research looking up the names mentioned on the plaque for a very interesting historical summary.
Too small to call a cave but I guess its a neat thing to see if you happen to be hiking this specific trail. Not worth going out of your way though.
Its old but not entirely interesting in and of itself. It is much more interesting if you do some homework and read about the history of Johannes Kelpius and the Hermits of the Wissahickon. Read up before you go!!!
The cave is easy to get to and spot, but its a bit creepy. Definitely only visit it when the sun is up.
My wife left me and took the kids, and this cave was a refreshingly calming place I could sleep in and collect my thoughts. Included below is a picture of me on my way to the cave!
Fun place also lil weird
Interesting landmark. Very small cave. The story behind the cave would be five stars
Its a cave, but my 4 year old son loves it. Eat to get to from Montgomery field.
Pretty cool landmark
Really cool place you better be able to climb or it will be ruff
Visit a historical homeless shelter. Free canceraids available just poke yourself with a dirty syringe. Kind of a cool thing to find when hiking the Whissahickon.
A bit stinky. Cool to read about the plaque. The journey there, through the woods, is definitely worth having this as the destination.
Hermits cave is a cool surprise buried within the Wissahickon Valley Park. The hike to it is fairly easy although coming from the North side is more hilly than from the Southwest.
Spooky as hell and full of history
So cool. A gorgeous spot in the Wissahickon. Off trail. Hard to access. I suggest walking up a half mile to a Fairmount Park house as well.
Pretty neat
Nice place to visit
Its less of a cave than a vaulted dugout, but its still pretty neat.
Neat little gem & colourful path for a Sunday walk in the park.
I tried to smoke a blunt here and was attacked by spiders. It was fun
If Hermits Cave and the Cave of Kelpius are the same thing & place, then, it seems that they got the location wrong. Unless they moved the cave, which I highly doubt, the cave is about a 1000 feet to the west/northwest of where Google Maps says that it is located. Pain in the ass, really, since I paid to much attention to what was said online about the location of this place, years ago...when I first researched it, & it took me hours to find the cave, once I was in the woods...& walking all over the woods, when I was looking for it.
One of many cool spots in the Wissahicken.
Great area for hiking
A bunch of german mystics? Im dubious. This cave is *small*. Its perhaps 6 x 10. I doubt you could fit more than 4 people in it, although one single hermit? Sure. Its not that hard to find either, since its marked on the parks trail map. Bonus - if you visit in summer, shine a light on the ceiling - theres a bazillion fat juicy crickets nesting in the stonework.. where its cool and damp. :)
Cool location. Tons of cave crickets when I visited.
Its lit. 5 minute walk from Daisy Fields.
It is really spooky I felt like someone was watching the whole time
Went after the snowfall, on a gray and quiet day. A haunting and mysterious place that is work checking out, especially if youre from the area.
The sort of place to spend the end of the world? Well thats what a bunch of German mystics thought when they moved to this spot. They made herbal medicines in the area, before eventually disbanding. If you are tracking the temporal location of the famous alchemist philosophers stone or the birth place of American mystical tradition you are on the right track. Kelpius meditated in these woods. A historical sign marks the birthplace of Rosicrucianism.
I first came upon this accidentally while walking through the Wissahickon trails. It is a very interesting piece of history. I recommend reading up on Kelpius and Rosicrucianism after you visit.
Great sites trails and plenty of wildlife
The energy feels so good.
Place is creepy
Spring house or hermits cave...no matter..kinda cool to run into behind the mansion.
Intriguing
Wish it was deeper
Could have been bigger its a shame that there was vandalism
Came for the hermit, stayed for the human sacrifice!
Gay
Weird
Love it
This is a small cave or a large hole.
So so
Ok place
A place of pilgrimage. Or at least it will be one day.
Alchemy!!!!!
