Fort Mifflin is great. They have reenactments, ghost tours, great views & a cool history. Their tour guides are awesome!! Plus, the planes right above are fun-- just like Waynes World. I know the site is not federally funded, so I try to show my support & visit here & there.
An awesome stop and worth the nominal fee for the available talks/tours they give. We went during black friday so we got the canon and rifle demonstrations too. My only issue was we had trouble reading some of the information plaques because of the weathering and sun damage. We will return to go into the buildings that were closed due to Covid-19.
What a great after dark tour! Our guide Noah was knowledgeable and funny. i will definitely be back and highly recomend it.
Excellent historical attraction with many fun and informative activities for different holidays. Low pricing allows for the whole family to enjoy local important history
I suggest going there during daytime and explore the grounds and tunnels yourself, be sure so wear boots as the grounds are wet and somewhat slippery, a flashlight or phones flashlight will help. Then take the candle lit tour and hear about the amazing history and ghost stories that have happened in the fort, I felt like a kid, I loved the place and if Im ever anywhere within 2 hours of this area, Im definitely going back.
I thought this was going to be a scary tour, but it was more educational. The tour guide was great.
This under-appreciated revolutionary war era fort is a testament to the men who fought off the British coming up the Delaware river. The rooms under the earthen, sod covered walls convey a time of uncertainty and fear. That feeling is not lost when you enter these rooms today - they are very dark and damp. Stop in them, with the lights off and see if you can imagine what they went through - youll appreciate it that much more.
Such a beautiful space and so much history!Would highly recommend adding this to your list of places to visit while in Philadelphia!Make sure to donate, and preserve this history for the next generation! They have many cool events, so make sure to keep an eye out for those incredible experience on top of general admission!
Interesting bit of history just outside the city. Go on a nice day. Friendly and knowledgeable employees. Saw lots of turtles in the moat. :)
Hidden Gem! Great stop for locals and tourists alike. Good for all ages, my 5yr old military loving kid thought it was so cool.I did bring flashlights like another reviewer suggested - that was a lifesaver. A lot of people couldnt go into walkways or rooms because they couldnt see anything so I was so glad we had lights!!There were a lot of amateur ghost hunters trying to summon something Such historical significance, I wish this was better funded just to preserve it all. Walked the outer perimeter and parts of the wall/doorways were being covered by weeds and trees it would be cool of they cleared it and made a real walkway (we were trailblazing honestly)it started with a trail to the river then turned into a jungle.
Awesome piece of history and the candle light ghost tours are great.
Fantastic museum, its criminal such a historic site is so terribly underfunded by the state, the staff is super well informed and friendly. If you need to burn some time before a flight definitely swing in.
Fantastic Location with a large array of areas to explore. Tour was well explained, and covered most of the area. Please give this more funding so it can better maintain its facilities, the area is one of my favorite Ive visited in a while, despite being slightly dirty in parts. Then again, it is Philly, so thats to be expected.
Wasnt really impressed saw nothing maybe to many planes idk
Great Family Adventure. Indoors are closed due to Covid19 but was still nice exploring the grounds, cannon demonstrations, and airplanes taking off and landing.
You get a great lesson in history, great historical items. Staff is very knowledgeable.
Amazing place only 15 minutes away from Philadelphia.
Great historical fort with knowledgeable tour guide
Great place. Been here on multiple field trips and this time for siege weekend. Good for anyone even if you are not a huge history buff.
Compared to other historical/colonial stops along the East Coast, this place is a bust. Lacking finances to keep maintenance and staff to keep entertainment going, I felt out of place or lost the majority of this visit. The only history lesson given to me in the entire 20 minutes it took to see everything was a slip of paper, and a few oddly placed placards. I would reccomend coming to this spot simply to cross it off your Revolutionary bucketlist.
Great tours, interesting history, historical structures, walk the battlements
Their are several reenactments throughout the year,my brother and i were just talking about how great it was in the seventys to come here with our parents and watch the planes take off at the airport.
Did the candle light tour! It was a really great time. I do wish we had a smaller group. We had about 20 in our group, many flash photo happy that took kind of the spookiness out of it.I cant wait to do the over night next year!
Love history lots of it here and around
The fort is a fun place to visit, its not far from the nearby airport. I would reccomend bringing rubber boots since it can be muddy at times due to parts of the fort being below water level. In addition to the fort itself there is also a Spanish American war era gun battery. The fort is amazing for taking photos.
Fantastic Hidden Gem right in our own backyard. Learn more about our nations past from fun and enthusiastic guides. This place offers ghost tours, overnight stays, themed parties, and regular admission. Capable of Hosting groups both young and old, this was the highlight of are scouting year when our Cub Scout Pack went.
Great historical site that most people dont know about. Well worth a visit when they are doing the re-enactments
Amazing place. Came for a WWII reenactment event that my brother participated in and it was just wonderful. Blank firing cannons and guns made everything seem so real. Its like I became part of history. : )
Awesome history and even better paranormal activity!
This place is of the beaten path. A good place to see when the weather is nice. Bring a picnic lunch or pack some snacks.
Several ponds and small lakes nearby have some great fishing. Fort Mifflin is a great piece of Philadelphias rich history! Part of the grounds is still used by the Army Corp. of engineers, making this the oldest active fort in US History! Great place to fish and an even better place to visit and learn!
Beautiful place. Unfortunately not really known. Has a long glorious history. However looks like city of Philadelphia dont really care about that historic site. A lot of things need to be updated and repaired
Nice but lantern fliers are everywhere and the railroad is abandoning
We came for the candlit tour it was so interesting and very informative . It is so amazing to see down in the tunnels. And hear the stories of what happened there. 10/ 10 would recommend. But please for the love of everything wear mosquito spray they have it on the benches when you get there. Also i captured an amazing pic of what i believe is a revolutionary soldier if i can post here i will .
Ive been wanting to take my sons here for a while and we finally went. It was really cool. If you want to walk around for about an hour or so and investigate and talk, this is the perfect place. Some rooms are so dark, i wish i brought a flashlight...it was great watching the planes coming in for landings, they even give you a checklist for the types of planes....we looked for ghosts and snapping turtles...saw a groundhog...just watch your step walking around the walls. The staff was kind and very informative.
Went for the Renaissance Faire!!! It was beautiful!
Great spot tucked away behind Philadelphia Intl Airport. Terrific way to spend an afternoon.
Definitely worth going, great historic place and well preserved
An underused historical asset to the City of Philadelphia. Located tucked away behind the Philadelphia airport- largely gets overlooked in a city full of history likely due to its relative issolation. This is a great example of pre-revolutionary history. Check out various seasonal events and be sure to check hours before you head out. Most times that I have visited we are frequently the only visitors. Occasional facility staff are available to provide historical details.
If you love forgotten history this a gem. They also have many events here year round. Many lores about it being haunted. Great for exploring. Case mates are creepy as heck. Must go see.
The place looked awesome...from afar. We got there 20 minutes before closing, so I understand we wouldnt be able to see a whole lot, but the man staffing the office didnt even give us a smile, much less an option to see anything at all. He was very cold and uninterested in giving us any information outside of that closing was in 20 minutes. Very disappointing to visitors all the way from Connecticut. Maybe next time we visit with more time, I can offer a better review.
Beautiful Fort, lots of history! A must see
Didnt know this was a historical site, but it is amazing planespotting spot!
The history in this place is phenomenal. Plus you could run into a ghost of history past. Im glad this place has been saved for all to enjoy.
Open to walk into. But nothing inside the fort was open.
We went for the haunted ghost tour. Our guide was very personable and knowledgeable. Our group of 14 had a great night!
I work there
Great place to learn about early American history, next to the Philadelphia airport. There is a lot to see, inside buildings, and outside in the fort. In the Bunk House are fun games and puzzles to do. If loud noise bothers you, as it does me, you can get earplugs in the ticket office to muffle the musket demonstrations.
Super cool that it was free the week of July 4th and the attached was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Our kids loved checking things out over the whole day is the property. This was great for all ages and was neat to see all the airplanes come in over head too.
Fort Mifflin provides a unique perspective of American History through the revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War.
First of all, we didnt know that this was here, the staff were very friendly and helpful
Very nice people with great story telling abilities. Had a great night on one of the ghost tours and it was a very reasonable price and very educational.
Unique History and even caught a little something funny on my phone
Preserving the past and many wars.
I wish the Fort good luck. I really do. It has an amazing history. Its in terrible condition and they struggle for financial support, but that doesnt negate or forgive the behavior of the staff. We went there to shoot the exterior landscape of the Fort, something weve done many times in different weather and different seasons. The Fort itself is owned by the City of Philadelphia and it is a shared space with the Army Corps of Engineers. We were taking a few test shots for exposure before setting up a tripod when I heard someone shouting across the parking lot, Hey you with the camera”. RUDE. Hey you? Apparently thats how the staff addresses visitors. He kept shouting that we couldnt be on the property to shoot the exterior of the Fort and we basically got chased off the site for doing something we’ve done for years.Fun fact: Over the past 20 years we have volunteered a large number of hours to the Fort as reenactors for their various events. And it ain’t just us. An eerily similar review was dropped on Google a month ago. This time it was a card carrying member of the Fort who was also chased off the property by a staff member rudely shouting from the same second story window.
Really cool, kids loved!
Loved this place, lots of hand on history
Self guided tour. The only Revolutionary Fort thats still in existence. Beautiful location and grounds. Right at the water. Probably great for picnics. Also close to airport and one can watch airplanes starting and landing right over your head. There is no restaurant or anything there. So come prepared.
Cool historical place
Very lame. It has a good concept but is lacking all around. It could have been so much more. And no no ghost!!
Fantastic experience especially given that we had gone to the Philadelphia ren faire while it was making use of fort Mifflin
Great place to walk around, beautiful historic buildings not found everywhere. Amazing views of the river. And the best place to watch Airplanes come in to the airport. The admission price surprise me but I didnt mind making the donation. Felt it was worth the $8
Great fort that you can spend as little as an hour or up to two days exploring! Great to go during a reenactment event.
It was fun, and factual. We took the tour, and when we go back, we will know where everything is. We had ghost equipment, that didnt go off, but Im sure it will at night. I would love to go at night.
Great site to explore WITHOUT a tour guide (if possible). The tour seemed rushed and we were crowded into small rooms so you had to move on before checking things out after others or taking a photo. Our tour guide complained about us to others (we took too long) in front of everyone when she thought we werent there. Bringing this up to management was useless.
Awesome historical fort with hardly any tourist. Definitely an unknown cool place.
Always a good place to go, historic, fun and great learning for all ages
We had a candle light tour this past Friday night. Very well done, very informative and Ft Mifflin is beautiful by moonlight. We learned a lot while at this historic treasure. Afterwards, my family and I were waiting to leave on the little hill outside the hospital building, and we heard, not felt, a shwishing, windy sound above our heads loud enough for all of us to ask, What was that? It went over our heads and into a huge orange Maple tree to our right and literally shook all the leaves on the tree and then it was over. Has anyone felt this before at Ft. Mifflin?
The fort was very interesting. I especially liked the guided tour which focused on the Civil War Era of the forts history
No one was there too tell the history of the fort. When you went in a room the people in there didnt make you feel welcome. It felt like you were invading someones private home.
I had goosebumps realising the history of the fight for our freedom in this country. So sad that some of the structures arent kept in better shape. I believe the rumbling of the jets overhead from the very close Philadelphia International Airport distracts from the serenity of this very vital reminder of those who served there.
Great views and interesting buildings. Inefficiently run facility. Even though I was a card carrying member, got chased off the property by extremely rude, uninformed and unapologetic staff. This place needs to work on their logistics, rather than attempt to monitor guest flow from across the street and through a second story window.
Great place a lot of history kids had a ball
Canon demonstration was very neat. Staff was polite and knowledgeable.
A hidden gem of Philadelphia! Use your Google maps GPS to find it because there are no signs to get there, but its worth hunting for! A revolutionary war fort built by the British and taken over by America to stop them from taking Philadelphia. You can walk through the casements, sleeping quarters and stables. They have reinactments and events regularly, so you may even get to see the canon shot off! Its a great place for families by day and ghost hunters at night! Its also right next to the airport, so its fun to watch the planes fly in to land right over your head.
Great place for fun events and history
We enjoyed our experience. Self-guided tour. Buildings are well preserved.
Wow. Great history. Hope the feds step in with some money for this important place.
Its a piece of history in Philadelphia you will like it.
Really interesting gives a real history lesson. Worth the $6 senior rate. Even at $8 a bargain.
My step son got married there yesterday. It was a neat place, alot of history and beautiful old buildings, tunnles ect. Very well kept.
Cool place to visit. Nice and quiet in the afternoon. The place is supposedly haunted. Definitely spooky in some of the rooms without light. I would recommend bringing a flashlight or you could use your phone.
My sister is having a french event there at the end of the month. Seam like a very interesting place.
Attendant was super friendlyWe did a self guided tour. It was interesting and informative. The grounds could use some care, but I think that is more of a funding issue and not a relectiom of the people who work there.
Alot of history happened here!built originally 1770s and the British revolutionary war soldiers bombardment it for years! The Biggest British navel ship was sunk from this fort right in the Delaware river and many years later still finding debris and they towed what was left of the hull downriver that you can actually go see ! 64 gun ship I believe! After the unconditional surrender and the war ended making United States of America it was rebuilt in 1790s and used later as a Union post during the civil war and a Confederate Pow camp! used again up until 1952 I believe it was decommissioned! it was made a historical land mark and the city of Philadelphia now owns it ! ver cool place to stay! and rent! good reenactments and hosting of weddings! and dont forget about the GHOSTS THAT ARE THERE! and the ghost tours! been going there since I was 14 now Ill be 30 and continue to go there ! hope you have time to tour this place very cool landmark! good friendly staff and they have reenactors to have drills with children! very cool place!
Fascinating history so close to Delco.
Awesome historic local that is under the radar. Highly recommended to visit!
My family and for went here for the Halloween tour. It was a really fun time and out tour guide was awesome. I cant wait to do a day time tour when the weather gets warm again.
Great afternoon out. tour guides and actors were wondeful
Nice piece of history all people should come see.
This place is a piece of 4gotten American history. Its a part of a very important puzzle many dont realize or is even taught in schools. Back in 1777, this tiny fort held at bay the powerful British Royal Navy from entering occupied Philly with supplies delaying further British progress from squashing the rebellion when it was at hand, and it gave much needed time for American troops to regather and train propertly being that they had suffered a string of defeats. It helped set the stage for the proper training of the Continental Army under Gen. Washington at Valley Forge. Every one involved gave everything and a good pummeling did they received while under siege but survived they did. A great deal of gratitude was felt after the visit and why we are here today. About it being haunted, well, depends on what you wanna BELIEVE!
We loved it here! So cool
Its very nice and clean
