LOVED this hike! It was smooth walking the majority of the time with short steps over a beautiful creek. Driving there, We followed google maps to this trailhead. About 2 miles before arriving to the road, it turns to dirt. My Civic did just fine, just took it slow. We drove until a brown gate blocked the road, parked on the side of the road, and walked past the gate to the trail head.We took one half of the loop (south trail) out, hit cypress trail, hiked the 2.5 miles till it ended, then turned back. Coming back, there’s a sign showing where the north / south boulder trail splits. We took the north route back.Basic math shows that is 8 miles, but our step counter showed much less. There were lots of dogs on the trail and The trail was really beautiful. Tons of good mountain views mixed with shaded creek walking. Make sure to listen for water falls in the distance so you can walk off trail to see them, that was our favorite part.
The boulder loop trailhead is a wonderful trail to do when it not to hot outside. Maybe you can try it when there some snow but probably be to cold and to icy in winter. It is also a great place to take pictures if thats some you like to do. It is also a great place to just go to get away from City Life and be in nature and still be close to civilization. So definitely would recommend this trail head to anybody who enjoys nature and taking pictures and exercising.
I don’t get it. I know is summer but we brought our bikes and we couldn’t get anywhere. It’s all quicksand. The signs are kind of easy to miss. We ended up in circles. What a mess. And don’t go passed the 2nd large gate. There’s a guy who liveS there that will grill you. His “trespassing sign is hidden behind a wall” lol.
Currently closed, which you dont learn until youve driven all the way down the dirt road. Boo.
It is quite difficult to locate the actual beginning of the loop. There is a sign, but it does little too help you find the trail. At the map by the road, head down and into the wash, there you should see, across the wash, an uphill ravine with a couple cairns (stacks of rocks). Head up the and you will find the actual trailhead.
Went during summer. Was looking for a little spot off of the highway to eat a sandwich and thought we could do a short hike also. The trail has very large boulders, which were awesome. But the trail was definitely an atv/dirt bike trail also. Very loose gravel/sand. It was like waking in the desert. We didnt go far and turned around.
Beautiful hike!
It’s hard to distinguish where the blue vs red vs yellow trail begins and ends.
Amazing hike. Not very busy. Great trails and lots of side trails and boulders to explore.
Parking is a bit up the road but well worth short walk. Great views and access to multiple trails.
Quiet and beautiful
Amazing trail. Says its moderate. But as an older male. I would say its more on the easy side. But beautiful views
Amazing secluded part of payson that not many seem to know about. Occasionally will be some loud dirt bikers but otherwise you can be completely alone. Really great climbing out here that even less are aware of, can have whole crags to yourself with excellent granite.
Great hike, I loved it
Hard to follow the trail. Wasnt sure where to go.
The place is absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful views, fairly easy hike.
