This trail is so cool! The views the entire time are really nice and everything was so green. At the end, theres a super cool water fall that you have to climb into. Overall, the hike is pretty moderate with a few rocky parts and around 2000 feet of elevation gain. The hike up to the water fall is around 3.2 miles, but you can continue after the water fall if you want to, although it is probably the most boring part of the hike.

A unique and truly beautiful trail! Lovely in the winter. Loved. The vistas. Clearly easy to follow. DEFINITELY check out the waterfall, it’s about a two hour hike at a moderate pace.

This is one of many favs I have in AZ. The water this time of year is awesome. I was there last month and the falls were running better than I have seen is a couple of years. Not far from town and a scenic ride up.Road in is dirt so watch out for the rocks and ruts.

Really difficult trail. Our trail book said it was quite popular but there were only 4 cars there on Labor Day weekend. We did the Y-bar loop to connect back to Barnhardt and it was a grueling 15 miles which was 4 miles farther than trail book had indicated! so watch out!The only 2 parties we met had to turn around due to the difficulty.

This trail seems like a not often used gem. Its about 4 mi off the highway, but feels like a world away hiking or running up into the canyon. The rock formations have amazing colors and it is by no stretch and easy trail with quite a bit of elevation gain/loss and a mostly exposed route. there are no services at the trailhead except for parking and the road in does not require high clearance but there are some big rocks and possibly ruts to avoid. there is the option to make a 15-mi loop with about 3,000 ft of climbing and descending if you want a big day out in the Mazatzals.

Beautiful trail! About 4 miles going up, then 2 miles winding around the mountain. 12 miles in total, there and back hike. Highly recommend for those more experienced and in shape hikers. Trail was very busy when I went on a Saturday. Also note that there is a 4 mile bumpy dirt road leading to the trail head.

This was a very peaceful hike. My recommendation is to get there at sun up. The trail is 10 miles out and 10 miles back in so in order to do the trail during daylight you really need to be there all day. Make sure you bring plenty of water, toilet paper, and food. There are great spots to stop along the way to catch your breath or have a picnic. Be careful at the bottom of the trailhead there are a lot of swarming bees.

The area is epic. Had a great couple of hikes here. Its kind of a rough, neat drive in but the views are worth it! We climbed up over 6000 feet and the view was amazing.

This is a rather rough trail which wends its way up the mazatzal mountains at a constant upward pace. The views of the valley below are amazing. The rocks are disfigured by massive forces which pressed them like toothpaste. A key feature of the trail is a small waterfall which has water until early May. Be sure to head on to the juncture with the Arizona Trail and turn left. In a little while you will see another wonderful view of mountain peaks. Be aware that the area is very rocky and stout shoes are recommended.

Aka: HikeOn!~~~The trail head begins at the end of the very ruff, rocky Barnhardt Road 419. The parking area is large. There is no toilet. The northern Barnhardt Trail climbs about 1800 in aprox 6 miles as it traverses around the northern side of the 7900 Mazatzal Peak and intersects with the Arizona Trail (AZT)/Mazatzal Divide Trail No. 23. The trail tread is extremely rocky. I suggest you wear hiking shoes rather than trail running shoes. It is steep is a few places and has a several vertical drop-offs. There are many winding switchbacks making the climb easier. Your reward: Hiking up an utterly beautiful canyon, comparable to a Mini Grand Canyon! You can turn around now for a 12 mile/6 hour day, or take the suggested route described below for a 15 mile/8 hour challenging day:Suggested route: After reaching the AZT, follow it south (left) for 3.3 miles to a junction (6550) signed Winsor Spring. Turn left off the AZT onto the southern Barnhardt Trail toward Winsor Spring. Follow this very rolly-rocky trail that drops 2350 vertical feet around Mazatzal Peak, back down to the trail head and parking area. HikeOn!~~~

March and April is the best time of year to see lots of waterfalls. Summer can be a little hot during the mid day sun but mornings and evenings are always nice. Winters can be unpredictable and can go from being a little chilly but not bad to freezing with ice, snow and wind depending on the weather that particular year.

Strongly recommend this and Y-bar trail. While Y-bar is more open and pretty, Barnhart is tighter and has more interesting rock formations to look at. Also Barnhart has the creek and waterfalls during the wet seasons.

Great trail that starts at 4,000 ft. And climbs well above 6,000. Youll be accompanied by the sounds of waterfalls most of the way.

Awesome loop. Long but not super technical. Only a couple lung bursting sections. Otherwise a completely enjoyable hike. Dont do it in the summer. Miles 8 and 9 are fully sun exposed. Bring plenty of water. A good portion of the descent is slow going because of how rocky the terrain is. We stopped just past mile 7 for lunch. Took us 6.5 hours to complete. Id consider myself an intermediate hiker.

Pretty easy hike. A lot of the trail is flat with a few steep areas, its also very rocky. I only hiked 2.5 miles to see the waterfall but it was dryed up. I believe the whole trail is a 10 mile hike. There was a bunch of wild coati to. If you love beautiful vast views this is the place to go. A lot of flash flooding occurs there so beware. There is a long dirt road that takes about 14 mins to drive before you get to the trailhead and watch out for cows.

This is a moderate hike. I actually passed the waterfall thinking there would be a larger waterfall. That was the reason only 4 stars. But when we realized that was the waterfall it was pretty cool. The hike is gorgeous. I was told that there was a terrible fire that took must of the trees out. I bet before that it was even better. Im terrible at giving reviews but since there was none I thought it was definitely worth a review. I would recommend this hike. I liked it a lot.
