Beautiful park. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes. At times the path is steep and narrow. Its so beautiful and because of it tripping or sliding may happen. I am going back with different shoes.
Very pretty hike, with enough steepness to get your blood pumping a little. And not that many people out there to disturb your nature moment.
Beautiful trail! Thin in some parts next to steep drop so be careful.
A hidden gem in the heart of the urban hills. An easy trial with an amazing view. A small creek runs along the semi-paved road with limited parking space.I got so excited seeing spreads of the Golden Poppy on the hill side and hearing the stream/creek and bird chirping on the opposite side. What a lovely weekend!I saw a big group of people on a guided tour for bird watching. I think its with the EB Regional Park, please comment if you have info or the event link :-)I walked my dog and we met many other friendly dogs in our 20 minute brief hike. The trial stretches further but we needed to get going.Since the road is uneven, I would recommend wearing shoes with good ankle support. Theyre my lifesaver since I occasionally fall even on a flat smooth road.
Beautiful. Nothing more to say but bring a beer
Shh...dont tell your friends about this place. Amazing hike along the stream and incredible views of the Bay at the end.
Nice trails, great views at top.
Great place to get away from the city.
Very nice view from the top
Amazing trails. Cool even in a 90 degree weather
This is one of the more wild parks in the East Bay. Trails are narrow and often plunge steeply down into the creek on one side. There are no handrails. After a harrowing experience with three small children on a muddy path one day, I didnt go back for years. Im glad I did. It is quiet enough to hear the sound of water. It is shady with the perfect amount of light filtering through the towering branches of old redwoods.
Took my son to find shade, water & greenery and we didnt just find that! We saw blue dragon flies, lots of butterflies & a Eleggua head piece that I was later told to be great luck, auspicious, & an energy shifting piece. Im looking into it.
Nice trail thats doggy friendly
I went hiking here and it was a very scenic with a running creek, redwoods and steep Banks and narrow footing in places. At times, fairly challenging hike of about a quarter mile one way. I would recommend this for experienced hikers but not amateurs or first timers.
One of the best hikes I have been on. A good trail along a stream with some waterfalls. Of course I am sure the stream dries up eventually, but in winter, its gorgeous. As well, great views at the summit. A fairly challenging hike, but a very short distance and good views as a payoff.
Most beautiful spot for a beer and a killer view. The mural wall is worth a look. Beautiful and diverse native flora and fauna. Keep it clean, pack it out, and no fires!! Protect this Oakland gem!Check out Friends of Leona Heights on Facebook.
Worth the hike. Sunny dry day only. Follows steep canyon.
Such pretty falls and creek! about an hour or 45 minutes eachh way
With the recent heat wave, Leona Heights Park, is a cool, beautiful haven.
Love this place. A great hiking trail and a fun spot to be outside
We loved this trekking
We live 10 miles away & never knew about this beautiful place. The trail needs work & it would help if it was marked but all in all, enjoyable hike
Secret mountain bike park. Some of the gnarliest dh to be had in the East Bay. Something for intermediate riders too.
Wow, this is a gem find in this area for hiking. You wonder along the streams up with little waterfalls then walk back on bigger dirt roads with lots of wild flowers in spring and gradual descent.
Wonderful, private hike on the hills of Oakland
Beautiful hike in the woods, but the loose dog community has ruined the serenity of the location. Put your dog a an effin. We like dogs, but didnt go for a hike to play or have your dog sniff our crotch today.
Surprisingly rugged and hidden so close to a major city. There are small foot bridges, steep passes and a beautiful creek shaded by dense redwood canopy. For its size and accessibility, it is very tough to beat. Leave yourself a couple of hours to hike all the trails. The top affords a great view but the summit looks like it was an aborted construction project with lots of refuse and gravel lying about which is a shame.
Nice place to walk
The Marriot college parking lot is closed and the old Creek trail no longer exists
Cool spot that I am so glad we found. Hiking trails along side a beautiful creek.
Great
Ive gone to this Gem of Oakland about 8 times since moving nearby. Its a short but difficult trail in a gorgeous mixed redwood forest. Up a creek with little bridges, big boulders, a lovely waterfall, and Bay views at the top. Caveat: I cannot make it up without a strong friend to pull me up over some tall log-steps, over/under down trees & along eroded slopes. Bring a hiking stick or borrow a branch. At the top you can turn right at the fire road until you see the bright yellow of the old sulfur mine and descend thru a neighborhood or go back how you came. 4/5 stars because its not for everyone.
Such an amazing place!!!
Great little mountain biking trails through here, with some surprisingly gnarly sections. Steep climb to the top but worth it!
A really charming trail up a redwood rimmed creek, but this is real hiking, not just a stroll. It is steep, much of the trail itself is neglected and not maintained which is more evident since the last two big storms we had in January 2017, theres a lot of erosion and very narrow muddy portions. There is also a downed redwood blocking the path a few hundred yards (or so?) from Mountain Drive (down around New Years) that is challenging to climb over. Further up you need to be prepared to do some rock scrambling through the creek to continue to summit.
Im impressed with the scenery at this park tucked away in the Oakland hills.
Very Clean and PEACEFUL
Very nice walk/hike, not too hard, and very serene and quiet
Secret Mountain Bike Ride: Take Mountain Blvd to McDonnel Ave, take a left on McDonnell and head all the way to the old sulfur mine. Make a sharp left and ride the winding fire road all the way up the side of the Leona service drive. Ride until you reach an unclimbable portion of the trail. Beyond this incline you will reach a large pond and the derelict parking area for Merritt College. Ride the ridge until you see a radio tower and just another 15 yards, on the right hand side, is a steep drop into a single track trail that winds all the way back down the hill side. There are jumps, a crazy trip through a huge graffiti covered tram foundation, wicked drops and scenic outlooks. At the very end is the remaining anchor to the old quarry tram (the one you pass going down). If you are brave enough, you can take your bike on top and ride off the end - be careful, its a huge drop! This spits you out on Mountain Blvd where you can start again or go home.
Moderate hike with nice scenery.
Solitude
Tons of dog walkers
There use to be a mine there
Wide open hiking area that also leads to some covered trails, and a horse area.
Great hikes
People can be real slobs, its really too bad because this plane could be a little gem.
