What am amazing place! So much to see and learn. There are even some fun activities for the kids! There are three different domes: rainforest, desert, and a bonus dome... the kids had a great time exploring and I really enjoyed learning about the plant life. They also have a gift shop. You need to make reservations due to coronovirus.
Different from other horticultural places around the country, and thats a good thing! Who wants every botanical garden to be a carbon-copy of every other one? The Domes unique structure allow for upward gazing as well as downward gazing. Love the variety of plants from many different regions, especially the super hot peppers! Beautiful flowers, the show dome was decked out with poinsettias for the holidays, lovely twisted paths, bridge, koi pond, waterfall, a little slice of heaven in the midst of winter. I liked reading about the fruit hanging from the trees and bushes, when the flowers bloom, very informative. Especially love the birds and mice! Doves and finches fly around, tiny cute mice scurry under the bird feeder. I hope they dont use glue traps or any traps on these little guys, they were the highlight of my experience. While this space may not be on par with the gardens of Versailles, Ill be coming back in summertime to make use of the extensive outdoor space, the bandstand area, the flat grass court perfect for playing bocce. Keep the Domes Alive! Reviewed on 12/31/2019
Its always been consistently wonderful every time we visit. My two year old is in love with all of the different displays. Our favorite is the rainforest room. The coy fish are friendly and colorful. A true delight.
Classic botanical gardens housed in three domes. There is a wide variety of plant species that are well labeled. They decorate nicely for the holidays. Great place to take pictures and is rarely crowded. Theyve done a great job keeping the gardens sanitized and safely organized during COVID. Buy a membership and help this Milwaukee gem stick around for generations to come.
Looks great. With many weeks of no visitors theyve had plenty of time to tend to the plants. You must reserve your timed entry ticket(s) online before arriving. Youll pay when you enter, with one dollar off for Milwaukee County residents. There is a designated one-way traffic flow throughout the domes. A few small gazebo spots are marked as one family at a time as they have only a single way in and out. Show Dome first, then Desert, then Tropical.
Worth going to once, if you like to walk slowly and read about plants. Nice way to spend an hour in an aesthetically pleasing environment, especially as it gets cold!
Not just a boring Botanic Garden, but three different beautifully curated, interactive, fun and themed domes/gardens! My favorite is definitely the show garden, which was decorated with the Christmas theme that is absolutely magical. Who would expect to find a sleigh or organ in the midst of a Botanical Garden!? It feels like Ive walked through the wardrobe and entered Narnia! There are activity sheets for you to pick out interesting or peculiar things in the gardens, which I thought was an absolute great idea, not only interesting and interactive for children but highly educational for adults too! Easily the best Botanic Garden Ive been to!
A classic landmark in Milwaukee that never disappoints! Entry is dirt cheap and you get to check out multiple climates and plants youd never otherwise get to see in the northern hemisphere. Especially great visit in the colder winter months to ease that lack of vitamin c depression!
The domes are always great. The Christmas dome is beautiful as usual. The price is very reasonable.
Beautiful place to visit, especially in the cooler months when you need some greenery and subtropical temps and humidity! Truly a gem to explore. Family friendly, kid friendly. We love seeing the exhibits in the show some where there are different displays throughout the year. They also have a quaint gift shop with some fun finds. Definitely a place to check out and enjoy in Milwaukee.
I loved it here I used to go every Monday but due to the virus they are closed. This place has so many beautiful plants and I’m not even into flowers or plants and I find them beautiful. The exhibits are set up so beautifully, the staff are so great and helpful, the staff are also knowledgeable about the plants and will happily give you info. I have never had an issue while visiting the domes and I can’t wait for it to open again
A lovely place to visit. Takes about an hour to go through all three domes. The tropical Dome is extremely hot. The building is lovely and took me right back in time to the 60s and 70s, even the smell. I would suggest visiting tropical first, then desert, then show. Thats a counterclockwise progression where you will save the fanciest room for last!
Beautiful place and wonderful conservation message! It was an exciting vacation visit over Christmas break when the weather was terrible. The 3 areas themed as desert, tropical, and holiday gave us lessons and enjoyment. Beautiful displays, nice signage, and rare plants. We loved the treasure hunts, the great family photo opportunities, and had to visit the gift shop for a wonderful magnet souvenir. Delightful volunteers! Well done!
Definitely worth going to for only $8. Usually places like this are way more expensive. There are 3 large domes that are very unique from each other. They also house a small gift shop with some very reasonably priced plants! The line may look long to get in, but it moves very quickly. The entrance is just short causing a line to build out the door.
The conservatory isn’t that large, but the variety of plants is impressive. Very friendly staff. Not the most interesting conservatory I’ve been to (my favorite is in Montreal), but quite good. The entrance ticket for adults is $8, for Wisconsin residents - $7.The park around the conservatory is nice.
Such a wonderful and beautiful indoor gardens! We checked out warm tropical gardens in the 1st dome, the desert garden in the 2nd dome, and the Christmas garden in the 3rd dome (which transitions 5 different times a year based on the season). They had 3 scavenger hunts for the kids to check out in each garden (pick up at the entrance where you pay admission). Myself and my children loved visiting, learning, observing, and playing in the gardens. Admission is reasonably priced! We will definitely be back again to visit! A definite must see, GREAT for ALL ages!
This place is very interesting to visit and is a definitely Milwaukee must see. I think leisurely walking through all three points took a smidge over an hour. There was free parking and knowledgeable and friendly staff. Keep your eyes peeled as there are signs in the tropical dome for real fruit! They even had some plants to gently touch on some entrances. The show dome was so peaceful and fun to sit and enjoy all the trains riding around. Thank you for a great experience!
The domes were awesome and just as I remembered from when I came as a kid. This past weekend was all about trains and my kiddos loved it. This was their first time coming and enjoyed the scavenger hunt paper that we were given. We had fun trying to find all the items.
What a great place to spend a cold, gray day...you forget its a miserable winter outside! With three different zones, you will see more plants than you dreamed could be in one place. I want to bring my houseplants here on vacation to give them some inspiration. Why does a place with such major drawing power not have a little cafe? I think this every time I go and see the sad little vending machines. You could go on Saturdays during the winter and get your nosh needs met at the farmers market that is hosted in an attached building (annex?) but it seems like a major planning oversight.Be aware that your Friends of the Domes membership dues get you in free but there is not a separate entrance line so you stand people deep just to get your card scanned. This is something they are aware of and working on.Their educational programs are great! Hands on and interesting, you can hear something while having fun!
Pretty cool place to check out. Ill probably visit here at least once a year. A good time was had by all.
I enjoy being in a warm climate surrounded by plants and not snow. The ceiling in the Desert dome leaked water. The show dome wasn’t exciting but the following days they had a train exhibit that I seen on the local news channel. This place could benefit from routine maintenance and additional new climate domes.
Came to the domes to check out the holiday garden! I got to take some absolutely stunning pictures! The desert dome is awesome, and I loved the birds in the tropical dome. I had a hard time finding the frogs though. I would highly recommend coming to this place for a nice relaxing time ️
Awesome place, always well laid out and cared for.Perfect cure for the winter duldrums.
Ridiculous restrictions wouldnt allow us to visit. My gf called them and asked if they were open for tours. The lady said yes so we went down there with some friends from out of town. Then we get there and they say you have to reserve a time slot prior to going? Bunch of bs. Typical liberal government making it inconvenient.
If you love plants and learning new things this is the place to go! Decided to stop by while driving through Milwaukee and was no disappointed. Three large biomes and a cute little gift shop all open to the public to learn about different types of plants, great place to bring kids!
Beautiful indoor botanical gardens. Great farmers market next door.
Very interesting place to visit. A lot of plants in 3 different settings.
Fun place to check out with friends and family and walk around and see all the items on display. This is not free, pricing is friendly.
Nice escape from the winter cold. Go during the train show in February! The displays are based on current themes & are very creative! This year 2020 is Giants. Check before you go. Some days are free for Milwaukee county residents.
Its beautiful and reasonably priced for the small escape you get in the city. The Tropical dome and Desert Dome were open today, I always recommend calling ahead to see whats going on that day.It was a blissful couple hours away from the snow & cold inside warm, green, tree, plant, really oxygen rich nature packed insides.
Great place for our rainy day
This museum is one of the places to visit when you come to Milwaukee. You may be able to find this museum on the high way because it has three big domes. The domes are hot houses, so inside is very warm even though out side is chilly.
Great experience! The variety of plants within each of the domes is massive and you can really explore these environments well. The show dome has such a nice atmosphere to it and a tiny train city as well! If you are interested in plants or want to take someone somewhere nice, definitely add this as an option.
A lot of fun! Beautifully presented in the various environments it is a fun and different place to visit.
This place is beautiful! Picturesque! And cheap to go in too. If you love nature, this is a must see. And its up to you if you want to just have a quick visit or spend a few hours here. Theres lots of information to read and overall just a nice place to relax at. It can get tiring though, so bring some change for the vending machines there (not sure if you can bring in food). Just a beautiful and interesting place to see.
Lovely space to enjoy some amazing plants and environments! 3 distinctly different domes with a variety of plant life and some animals! The desert dome is a great place to visit in the winter! Very fun and educational place to visit! One of the domes is being decorated for Christmas season! Would definitely recommend! Free on Mondays I believe, otherwise $7!
Impressive greenhouse exhibition. Well designed and cared. Fair price for a 2-3 hours stroll through pleasant landscapes and learn something new about botany. Love the succulents. The tropical exhibition is not very impressive, but I come from a tropical country so there’s for sure a bias. One star less for the policy of the membership. We were considering having a family membership for future return but the same day admission could not count toward membership fee, a very common practice nowadays.
Even as a child we always went to the domes. Glad to see all three still standing and still beautiful! We had a family gathering in the back at their private indoor pavilion, spacious, bathrooms, basketball court and scenery.
Simply WOW. This was probably the best conservatory I have ever been to. I really enjoyed spending my time looking at different flowers and trees. It was hard to decide between tropical and desert conditions. Both were genuine, and definitely better then weather in Chicago. The drive was really worth it. I recommend this place to anyone. Kids seemed to enjoy it as well, especially the show garden.
Love this place
Very beautiful place, great place to spend time with the family, very affordable also.
Such a gem to have in Milwaukee. We took a break from the bitter winter cold to absord the heat and beauty of this wonderful garden. It was a very affordable visit and our tuseday morning stop was not crowded at all. Loved all of the plants we saw and all the great photo opportunities. Would make for a wonderful visit any day.
A great place to take family or friends. Cool experience to see plants in different climates and regions.
The display was beautiful.. I came in to Milwaukee just for a day trip and this was one of my stops .. fast easy visit .. front staffer was a pleasure to talk with for recommendations on some of the things to see in Milwaukee
Sadly it’s closed. Nice little walk around it.
My family have gone to the Domes many times and each time is a new and memorable experience! There are many beautiful plants but also hidden creatures like doves and frogs. There are lots of cute displays that helps keep kiddos engaged too!
Oasis of calm on Black Friday. Perfect for getting toddlers out on a rainy day. Good place to visit during Wisconsin winter.
Love the architecture but was a little disappointed by the plants. There weren’t many rare or interesting plants and a lot of them looked sad. It was still nice to walk through but the entrance price should be more like $2 rather than $8.
So many wonderful plants, very clever seasonal display Attack of the Monsters train show. The tropical dome warms you to the core on a cold winter day. Lots going on on a Sat am with the winter farmers market connected to the building.
Always loved the Domes! Wonderful place to escape the Milwaukee weather! Kids love learning about plants and displays in Show Dome like the trains!
Beautiful and serene!! Help save the domes and visit today!! Ps they have a winters farmers market on Saturdays!!
Beautiful place! Cheap to get in and fun to walk through. It doesnt take long to get through it but its definitely worth the trip. Lots of great photo opportunities. Theres a show room, a rainforest area, and a desert area.
Beautiful and dreamy! Prefect place for family and couples just anyone!
We spent about one hour here, about 20 minutes in each dome. I liked the self-guided tour brochures they offer! I liked the tropical and dessert dome the most, and felt like the seasonal/show dome had the least to offer. Another great feature is that you can buy a glass of wine or beer to walk around with. Additionally, they offer coat racks where you can leave your coat (the tropical dome is warm and humid!).
WONDERFUL Day celebrating my daughters birthday! The domes and the specimens in the domes are beautiful! Made for a wonderful Sunny warm day inside during January!
Lovely & well kept. Interesting & entertaining. Look closely for live animals in the exhibits. Cute gift shop with reasonable prices & live plants to purchase.
Even in the Winter, there are a lot of fantastic plants and exhibits here. Lots of strollers in the winter, though. Its a cozy getaway for families. Tripods arent allowed. Found that out the hard way.
An Oasis of plant life. 3 ecosystems maintained, 1 under each dome. Not to mention the domes themselves, the buildings are a work of art themselves. Trains in the show dome are a treat for children, beware the cacti in the desert dome, but the tropical was a welcome break from the cold Milwaukee weather.
Its a quick drive from Chicago and thus nice low -cost, uncongested alternative to downtown Chicago. Parking is plentiful and free. It was a short wait to get tickets and non-residents pay slightly more. Bonus are the local eateries within a short easy drive.
Love this park since I was a child
Loved each of the different rooms. We were there when they were setting up for an exhibit or something in the main room area. I think it was a Japanese flower exhibit. Everthing was very beautiful.
A lovely way to escape the cold! Beautiful plants, cool architecture. Took us about an hour to walk through all 3 Domes but you could take longer if you felt like it. I wish there was a bit more engaging stuff for the younger kids who can’t read. The train and miniatures were really cool! Lovely gifts in the gift shop as well.
Very beautiful, calming, and serene. It was quite a learning experience also.Everyone there was very friendly and we were all captivated by the beautiful flowers and greenery.Nice place to go with family and take pictures
The park was clean and is a nice place to enjoy a sunny afternoon walk.
Wonderful place, free parking, large multiple parking lots, senior resident prices, check website for times of the year when the show done is changing over, would like to see paper towels instead of blowers in the bathroom, small gift shop has some local items.
Great place to check out some unique plants and some casual time. Very reasonably priced and great for taking pictures. Had a lovely time.
Awesome just beautiful Ill be donating my crown of thorns in the spring! Its huge! Original crown of thorns in the bible, they have one there very small! Mine is a huge healthy bush!
What beautiful gardens! These gardens consist of 3 domes that are open year round, the Desert Dome, the Rainforest Dome, and the Show Dome. The Desert Dome is full of unique cactuses, had a moderate dry temperature, and also was home to a friendly bearded dragon named Steve! The Rainforest Dome is full of colorful, fruit-bearing trees and other plants. My favorite in this room was the banana tree which was very strange to look at because of what the plant drops from its banana cluster. The third room is the Show Dome. This room commemorates the community by displaying signs from around the Milwaukee area with model trains zooming everywhere. There is even a large enough train to ride in this room. Another great thing about the Domes, is that on Thursdays, Milwaukee area residents can visit for free, otherwise, its only $7 to come visit. There is also a gift shop to visit, once you have seen the 3 domes.
Absolutely awesome! The domes far exceeded our expectations. We decided to pop in on a whim and ended up spending 2+ hours there. The staff was very friendly, the botanical domes were fantastic. Who would’ve thought you could see banana trees in Wisconsin... in March!! Very clean, super beautiful, was like going in to a different world in each dome! I highly recommend and would go again, soon!
Great place to get away from winter. Could use a little more sprucing up. Looks like the gardeners were on vacay. It’s a beautiful place no doubt but the little touches could really make it a real Wow Place. It just seems to have a civil servant level of maintaining the gardens. The show garden had great creativity. I really like the place.
Such a nice place! Plenty of parking and relatively inexpensive. If you havent been to the domes, definitely make it a priority!
The fact that it’s a domed conservatory in the middle of the city is quite cool to me ! I loved the 2 domes out of the 3 that were up ( tropical and desert). It doesn’t take a lot of time to do but you could stay there all day and just admire the amount of work that goes into making the plants what they are. I think it’s one of the top conservatories I’ve been to!
So much cooler than I could have imagined. Nothing compares to visiting an indoor, temperature controlled giant greenhouse in the midst of a midwest winter but I think visiting the Domes would be fabulous year-round. I like the identification of the plants, and how the story of discovery and propagation was placed in a historical context.
First time visit today. The domes were neat. Three separate themes desert, tropical and a show dome with a rotating theme. A lot of beautiful flowers and birds. Nice and warm inside so can take off the coat. Can see it all in about an hour.
Very nice park. Small enough to enjoy in an hour or more. Beautiful flowers!
Theres overwhelming variety of plants in all 3 domes! Very relaxing though. Pixs are from only the 3rd Dome (seasonal promo). Good place for Mothers day or Romantic or especially for educational classes!
A beautiful place to enjoy the nature, learn different plants across the country and world. They offer some activities for kids, relaxation guaranteed. Pictures, videos turn excellent if you want to take some.
This place is absolutely gorgeous. The admission is cheap and there is a super cute farmers market hosted their on the weekends.I was lucky enough to go during a steam punk themed day. Which had some super fun music and dressed individuals.
A great place to go on a rainy day. The cover charge is very affordable. All the domes are incredible, there are so many interesting plants! This is a good place to get some nice photos taken with your family. A must see!
Our 2 year old spent almost 3 hours there... Most places we visit usually only keep him entertained for about an hour. If that doesnt deserve a 5 star rating, nothing does! Great place to get over the winter blues.
I am absolutely in love with The Domes! I recently attended a friend’s wedding here, but have also come here several times while growing up and in my adult years. It’s a wonderful place that is truly unlike anywhere else. Please help support The Domes - it’s truly a Milwaukee landmark!!!
Cant beat this for $8 if you are into plants, or just want a nice place to catch up with an old friend.
So ever since I was a little kid, this has been one of my favorite places in the world. Particularly the tropical dome on a very cold and grey day in the middle of the winter. There is nothing quite like the feel of warm, humid air on winter dry skin, the sound of running water, and the smell of life to revive a soul withered by a Midwestern winter.
When you take your time, you see things you will not see anywhere else unless you visit the places these trees, plants and flowers came from. Not a huge place collectively speaking but the pain-staking care and quality is way above expectations!
It was a unique experience. Lots to look at and I appreciate how much work goes into maintaining such large gardens. However, it does look like it needs to be updated. It has the potential to be so much more. Definitely visit if youre in the area.
Fascinating to see all the plants that grow all around the world. Very well maintained. Fun for families.
The domes are incredible, very fun to tour all three. Desert, tropical, and zen domes.
The tropical and dessert domes are both really cool. Ive only ever been to the holiday exhibit in the rotation done but it was beautiful. Also highly recommend the farmers market in the greenhouse in the winter; since they have electrical hookups there are vendors there that dont make it to as many markets in the summer months.
I always have a fun time coming here. Its especially nice to escape from winter for a little bit. They have 3 domes; the desert and jungle ones are always about the same and the showroom changes seasonally to another theme. Theres birds in the domes so if youre afraid of birds, have caution, but I think theyre cool. Gift shop has neat plants for sale and at a good price.
Fun place to kill an hour. I wish there were more animals as well but as is, for plants, its potentially a playground.
Amazing collection of plants and the train was really a hit with my granbaby. What a beautiful experience and a warm cozy place to spend a cold winter day.
Excellent place to visit if you are looking for horticultural environment. Every first Thursday of month entry is free.
Such an awesome place to bring your kids, your parents or simply to enjoy these beautiful plants. Bathrooms are big and clean, they have a cute gift shop.
It was a great place to visit and take photos. It gets very hot in the desert dome and very humid in the tropical dome
I love this place. Could visit every day. What an amazing collection of plants!
An amazing conservatory that will forever be one of my favorites. The domes are quirky and beautiful. I would love to visit this place anytime that they change the guest exhibit dome. The grounds are also beautiful and a fun little trail is located at the back of the property.
Definitely one of my favorite things about my visit to the Waukesha/Milwaukee area, this was absolutely breathtaking! The tropical jungle dome gave me a first hand view of plants and trees I’ll probably never get to see in a “real” jungle. The desert dome was as beautiful! So much to see it was almost overwhelming and I definitely hope to return to in a future visit to the area!
