My wife and I are both licensed funeral directors and embalmers in NC and for her birthday, she wanted to visit Old City Cemetery while visiting Lynchburg, VA. We enjoyed the rich history and culture of OCC. The host in the museum was very kind and shared some history with is. Seeing the old funeral coach from Diuguid Funeral Home, visiting the Old Chapel and swinging on the swing under the huge Oak tree was so fun. We found it interesting that folks enjoyed coming there and eating there lunch in the quiet of the cemetery. We noticed several bringing their lunch and escaping the busy city and coming to these peaceful grounds. So much history. I also enjoyed playing the piano in the old chapel. It felt so peaceful to take in the beauty of the chapel.
We really enjoy the candle light tours, but for four years in a row now, they have turned into cell phone flightlight tours which takes away the vive. I hope your team kindly requests for visitors to please use lanterns & not their bright white cell phone flash lights as they walk about the grounds. Every year, we eagerly await for the tours hoping theyll feel genuine & hauntingly special.
Just a beautiful old cemetery
I really love old City Cemetery. Its beautifully taken care of, with a variety of garden spaces. Ive photographed a few different sessions here too, which made for beautiful pictures. I also love the wooden swing they have on the large oak tree. Its a peaceful, serene place to visit. The very small white church there is also very pretty. My sister had a small intimate wedding ceremony there, which was beautiful.
This is a beautiful place to spend a morning. Many lovely plants, and interesting exhibits. A gorgeous, contemplative, introspective place, with surprising history and art style exhibits strewn throughout. I wish i lived closed, to participate in their artistic offerings. I understand they have candelight walks in the fall, and sometimes concerts. This is a really lovely place.
A beautiful place to practice social distancing and apropos considering the history of the old pest house-- a historic location for Quarrentine
