An absolute must for any paranormal investigators. We had 3 large housing unit buildings to tour. Unfortunately we didn’t have any experiences or gather any evidence, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have a good time. The history, the creepiness, everything made this a worthwhile trip. Nothing like walking down the corridor of cells in the pitch dark, looking around the corner into a cell hoping nothing is looking back at you! Will be back
We just went through the tour and was extremely satisfied its a very spooky place..but very historical.. I suggest you go and enjoy it..the tour guides were amazing
I have to be honest. The schedule youre sent and the one the tour guides use do NOT match. Those breaks between only happen if they feel like it. Starting time depends on them, not what your email says. Things like that start me out with a real negative attitude. Your tools consist of one very cheap EMF meter. I didnt know of anyone, out of 75, that had theirs work. Four people from our group walked out on the tour. The tour was educational, however, I thought the scheduled tour was worth $100. What I got definitely was not. I wont do it again.
My mom and I took the 2 hour ghost tour on the night before Halloween. Just walking up to the entrance of the Missouri State Penitentiary felt intimidating and eerie! The staff was amazing and ensured that everyone was safe and checked all rooms before departing to the next step of the tour. Diane was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and hilarious, she had some great jokes and really great ghost stories.I definitely recommend that you get there a little early to visit the gift shop prior to your tour starting, as the gift shop was not open when our tour was over. We managed to snag some cool hoodies, flashlights, and t-shirts and our souvenirs were very reasonably priced. Also, dress appropriately for the weather forecast! It was very chilly on our tour, I could only imagine how hot it would be in the summer! (no air conditioning or heating)I could feel the negative energy and the feeling of being watched inside some of the cells and what they call the dungeonThe historical and paranormal aspects of the Missouri State Penitentiary is astounding,I definitely recommend visiting!!
Michael and randy were amazing during the tour. Would definitely recommend this to anyone! Loved it.
Our tour guide was fantastic! He was so full of knowledge and stories. He had personal experience with the penitentiary during his years as a sheriff. It was just such an interesting place to walk around and hear about.I would recommend going on this tour... either the 2 hour, 3 hour, or ghost tour options.
We did the three hour ghost tour and it was amazing. The staff was wonderful and had great stories to tell us.I would definitely do this to her again. Dress warm for the weather and in layers if needed. We definitely had ghost experiences at this tour.
This was a fun tour, the guides were informative and let you do what you needed to look for signs of ghost. Great time!
The tour was interesting.. loved every minute of it. Will be taking the longer tour soon.
AWESOMELY SPOOKY! and even has a gift shop where they sell parts of the collapsed prison wall!tour was informative and fun! I loved our tour guide,I didnt get her name but shes very small and petite silver haired lady who MADE the tour so fun!
We did the ghost tour on Halloween. Overall, really cool history and an interesting tour. I felt like the “ghost” part was a bit forced but it was a good Halloween activity. I gave 3 stars because there were no COVID precautions. Our group had at least 20 people and only a few people wore masks. Not even our tour guide or the employees were wearing masks. Pretty disappointing when the confirmation email promised safe tours.
Definitely worth the trip. Went for a ghost tour. Tour guides were a little unconvincing and could have focused a bit more on some of the dark history. But the place is definitely creepy. Has a dark ominous feel. We heard some weird things and had a great time.
It was hot, so definitely grab a hand held fan at the start. Green was very detailed and lively throughout the tour. We had a great time!
Amazing 2 hour tour given by a former guard, who worked here for 30 years. Dont miss this!
I had a great time at this tour. The tour guide was knowledgable and a great story teller. He used to work there and that made the experience even better. Great way to spend an afternoon.
This was a neat experience, definitely worth the money! Our tour guide used to work in the prison and had a lot of personal stories about the prisoners and the general day-to-day business of the penitentiary in its prime. Would definitely go again to hear another guides perspective.
Awesome tour, with a guide that worked as a maintenance man for years. Talk about a guide with personal experience & stories to tell. Well worth the time & $. Go- you wont be disappointed. It was a great way to spend 2 hours!!!!!! A MUST do.
Great place to try to hunt spirits. We had some activity on our k2 meter, but otherwise didnt see anything. On a previous tour I saw a shadow person. Very cool!
As a former employee at Missouri State prison. It was nice the old work place. But taken the 3 hour tour I got meet a old friend that I had work with, and the visitors ask me the questions so I didnt feel like I was trying taken the tour. But given it
We had a great time visiting here and Larry was an awesome tour guide. So cool to see the history here in our state
Took a two hour history tour here, and had Mike as the guide. He made it very interesting, and was super informative and entertaining. He’s a great speaker, and I’m glad he was our guide. He answered questions thoroughly and knew his history. The penitentiary has an interesting history, and it’s very cool seeing what still stands of it today. We were free to stand in cells, touch many things, and take plenty of pictures. An awesome experience, will come back again.
Nine friends and I booked a 5-hour photography tour. I knew it was going to be cool but it exceeded all of my expectations. Our guide, Larry, actually used to work at the facility and share so many personal stories with us. There were certain areas that had some tornado damage so we were unable to tour then but even then we didn’t run out of locations in the five hours. Our guide was also patient with us photographing high and low every 3 feet too. If you enjoy history of a different kind and abandoned places it will be an exceptional visit for you too.
Our tour guide Diane was absolutely horrible!! She was rude and hateful. For as much as it costs to go your time should be fun! Not ruined by someone rude!! She should not be a tour guide!!!! Our group spent a lot of money to have fun and hopefully learn some history!! That didnt happen She was an absolute drill Sargent who should not be giving tours and ruining a chance to see and feel history!!!
The tour was excellent! We had a former guard as our guide. His stories were amazing! One of the areas was unavailable for touring because of storm damage. However, in return, they opened a different area for us. I would highly recommend this tour. Be sure to make your reservation online prior to arrival.
Great tour, informative staff. Took an overnight ghost tour, we really had a lot of fun.
Very well done tourby former maintence worker
We went on a two hour tour and we had the best experience! Our tour guide, Neil, was very knowledgeable and answered everyones questions. He had real experience working there and told us interesting stories about his years there. I would recommend anyone in the area to visit!
Lots of really cool history. Great place for a family field trip. Just no kids under 6
Lively, very knowledgeable, personable, humourous! Larry and Nadine were great hosts and tour guides.
The ghost tour was good. It had just enough eeriness to get you feeling the creeps.
We did the 2 hour history tour with Michael and Cathy, they were very informative and made the 2 hours fly by. I recommend you do the tour.
Tour was very cool, Mr Green was super knowledgeable. He told very interesting stories. And kept to crowd very entertained.
Very interesting. I didnt expect to have such a wonderful experience!
Very Interesting Place. Cant Wait To Go Back
Loved the 2 hour tour. Very informative, great gift shop. A must do in Jefferson City
If you are serious about interacting with a spirit, this is an excellent place to go. Unfortunately not everyone on the tours are serious or respectful.
Great tour guide, Larry had a lot of cool extra stories from his years working at the prison. A lot of history and very interesting things to see.
I think the tours are great. The guides know there stuff. Its interesting and if you want to learn alittle bit of history, then I recommend going!! I have gone a few times and its worth your time.
Great Tour! 3 hours isnt enough to get it all in. Michael was wonderful and super knowledgeable.
Fantastic tour! Michael was a great tour guide and we had a great time!!!
We took the 3-hour ghost tour and absolutely loved it! The staff was exceptional and highly recommend.
Nice place to visit. Highly recommended. Just check the Sonny Liston story, controversy with the Wikipedia
Very interesting tour. The guide was excellent. Lots of history.
We went on the 3 hour history tour today and really enjoyed it! Bill was a wonderful tour guide. I would definitely recommend, and will be back again! Thanks
3 hr tour was awesome
Was an amazing tour... so much info and history. 168 years
Lots of fun weve done the 2 hour tour amd the 3 hour tour next is the overnight
Amazing experience and blast from the past!! Our tour guy Michael was highly knowledgeable about the history, was an incredible tour guide and keeps you entertained along the tour! Also, Has an answer to every question asked. I highly recommend you take the tour, we plan on coming back for a ghost tour soon!!!
Highly recommend this place!!! Great tour guide- a former guard of 30 years. The history here is pretty amazing. So glad we went!
Drove here on a whim while traveling to another destination. First of all in the pictures you think the face of building is massive. The lot is but this is just one side. So just to let you know. I went up to get some pictures of the door which listed the tour times. This elderly gentleman who worked there came out and spoke to me about the history of the place. Pretty cool of him. Seems legit. Didn’t have time for a tour but I would have went if there would have been more time. Next time!
Had a great time learning about the bloodiest 47 acres.
Loved it! 6 or 7th time here during October! Tour guide is boring
Loved it.Our guide Mike was very knowledgeable and fun. He went out of his way to engage my granddaughter that has medical issues and just happened to be her birthday wish to visit.
The Missouri State Penitentiary is incredible. We did the three hour history tour led by Michael and Vernon. The buildings are filled with an overwhelming amount of history and I cannot imagine anyone could relay it better than our tour guide, Michael. He was the absolute best tour guide I have ever had.It was so interesting my twelve and fourteen year old were engaged and excited throughout. I cannot think of a better recommendation than to say - a THREE HOUR HISTORY TOUR kept the interest of a young teen and preteen and they came away saying it was awesome. I concur - it was awesome.
This is an amazing place. We have stayed here overnight at least 3 times and it has been the experience of a lifetime. The staff is super friendly and helpful with any questions. The place is beyond creepy and confirm without a doubt it is haunted. The lights go out and spirits come out. Worth a stop! Always book in advance this place is very busy. Get their early on the overnight tours the shop is only open before your tour.Make a trip!
Went on the 2 hour ghost tour. Thought it was pretty cool and interesting. Will have to try the 5 or 8 hour overnight one next time. I’d recommend doing the 3 hour+ tour if possible. 2 hour tour is kind of short and most of it is spent on talking about the history.
Amazing History and Ghost Tour, amazing staff and got lots of good pictures
The history is amazing and our guide, Larry, shared some awesome stories.
My family really enjoyed the tour tonight. Bill and Aloha were full of history of the prison.
Very interesting and enjoyable tour. Our guide was awesome!
Great place to be locked in! Windows right in front of the cells. Makes the place larger than it is. highly recommended for criminals to serve their time here :)
Prison was nice...but too long standing in the dark for ghosts to even appear
Had a great experience! I thought the tour guide was awesome!
Very interesting & informative tour. Thank you Green & Kathy for the great tour!
Tour guide (michael) was energetic and very educated on historical events inside the prison. The tour was 2 hours but I could have easily made it another 2 hours with all the interesting details. Highly recommend!!
Always an awesome place to stop and learn something new every time. Unfortunate a tornado took out one of the roofs so couldnt see that building but did not subtract from our tour at all. Worth the stop
We did the overnight paranormal investigation. Our guide (I do not remember his name, my bad) was very good about letting everyone investigate without interruptions, but he was very knowledgeable if you had a question. It was an experience you shouldnt miss, for sure.
Was good I feel like the group size (30) was to large and people moved slow therefore taking more time up.
Informative and educational. Eerie and creepy. Fun and interesting. The gas chamber is awesome.
I found the whole experience very interesting. Ill look forward to seeing the rest of the tour once the buildings have been repaired from the tornado damage. And will definitely do the Ghost tour and the Overnight tour as well. I would recommend it to anyone. The history is very fascinating and very informative. It also broke my heart to know that prisoners were living in those conditions. And would only hope we have come along way since those terrible times.
Super cool got a few reading on the little machine the tour guides were fun, interactive overall super interesting place and creepy vibes
This was so amazing! Did the 8hr overnight ghost hunt! The people were absolutely AMAZING! I actually got a creepy shadow down in 3-D where they housed criminally insane
Fantastic trip - loved the whole experience. Recommend at least the 3 he tour. Easy train ride from KC or St Louis. Quick walk a block away.
Had a good time and they did give a great tour of the place
Wonderful tour. The history of this place is incredible.
I went on he ghost tour. It was super fun! The tour guides were fun, friendly and full of information. I will definitely do this again.
Great tour. Very informative and eye opening. Long history which was brought to life by our tour guide, Mike, one of the former Wardens at this facility. I recommend it for sure
It was interesting. Didnt know about all that happened there until the tour. I think we even have a picture of a ghost
Larry was our guide and he had worked there for many years, his stories throughout the tour made it much more interesting. Would highly recommend the tour and the museum.
Amazing historic tour! Our tour guide, Lt Green was fantastic! He was entertaining and VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE! I would recommend this tour to anyone in the area and its also worth the trip, its what we came for and were not disappointed! Would love to do the paranormal tour sometime!
Very honest and real ghost ytour. Not trying to fool anyone. Highly recommend and will be returning!
Great place to visit and get some history lessons
Super interesting informative and creepy
You must travel to Missouris state Capital and tour this old prison before its too late. Its worth the trip. Its a real haunted house.
One of the Coolest Tours Ive been on! But then again CJ is right up my ally! The History I found to be absolutely fascinating and incredible! Having the previous Warden as your Guide made it so much more Personal! Listening to HIS experiences of running, What at One Point the LARGEST Maximum Security Prison in the United States.... I could have Stayed and visited with him for HOURS!AS for the Overnight Ghost/Haunting Tour.... Our Son is only 14. And minimal age must be 18 and older. Well be back!
Lots of good info! The guides were amazing and friendly
Its hot!! But it is a great place to visit and fun to learn about one of the biggest and first prison in the nation. Its crazy!!!
As a past volunteer at MSP I was a little disappointed that we didnt get to see areas that we didnt get to see as volunteers. The volunteer was very knowledgeable.
Awesome tour, tour guides are previous guards, warden. They have first hand knowledge of this place. Too scared to do the overnight ghost tour, so I went during the day. It was even a little scary during daylight. Very cool place, and prices very reasonable to tour.
Spectacular tour!!!!! Larry and Jim were fantasticTHANK YOU!!! Was absolutely worth the roadtrip from Iowa
We Did the 3 hour ghost tour! Wishing we had at least did the 5 hour. Time flies while youre walking around the facility looking to experience paranormal events.
With nearly 163 years of history, this old prison is definitely interesting. On the tour, youll visit some main housing areas for prisoners, showering rooms, pitch black cells where you literally cant see anything, gas chambers used for severe crimes, and more. Each area has a different story youll be told before youre free to explore. Many infamous criminals and little stories bring up small talk as you go on the tour, which, is in fact run by former workers of the penitentiary. It isnt scripted or anything, where they ramble on about something they dont know or care about. Its awesome that they share their knowledge and experience with the public.Dont bring a bunch of money, because there arent any souvenirs, to my belief. Its a great experience, even if youre not the most interested. Itll be fun in the end, because the tour guides are so much fun.
It is my 3rd time going at night. Wonderful tour guide and a incredible place for a ghost hunt with alot of history.
Great tour guide and alot of stories and info to take in! Great tour for the family to learn a little about history!
Tour was very informative about the history of this facility. You have the opportunity to see where the inmates lived and about some well known people who resided there. There is a lot of walking so where comfortable shoes.
Excellent tour. Larry was an awesome tour guide.
Tour guide Larry was FANTASTIC! Absolutely informative.
