If you visit Chicago This place is a must-see

It was a short and sweet place to visit. It was very tidy, and there were places to rest as well. My only concern is that the statue and landmark present at the Gates pertain to the firemen who have lost their lives in Chicago, and while that is very important, it would seem more fitting for there to be a statue dedicated to those that lost their lives while working at the Stockyards. Also, commercial trucks would loudly roll by every once in a while.

Since I was the Contractor to Rebuild the Stockyards Gated Area back in 2004. I came up with the Flagpole heights to have them at two different heights and have a two sided POW MIA Flag made. Also placing a Special Drain in front of the Gate so it would drain properly and protect the Gate foundation. Placing the Brick Pavers and Landscaping was done by good Subcontracting Crews. We then turned the Project over for the next Group to Build the Chicago Firemens Memorial.

The historical history of these Arches is amazing! There is also a firemans Memorial for a disaster in 12-22-1910. I spent awhile sitting on a bench of which there is plenty. There is street parking. I found it a nice spot to sit and traffic watch. A place Ill be visiting often.

Union Stock Yard Gate designed by architects, Burnham and Root.Years open: 1865-1971. At one time sprawling over 475 acres. the Union Stock Yard thrived for more than a century, then closed entirely. This rugged gate erected in 1875, survives as one of the few visual reminders of Chicagos past supremacy in the livestock and meat-packing industries.- a Chicago Landmark established on 1972 and a National Historic Landmark established on 1981.

Awesome memorial beyond the entrance. A granite monument dedicated to Chicago Firemen who died in the line of duty making the ultimate sacrifice in giving their life to save another. True heroes.

All day long the gates of the packing houses were besieged by starving and penniless men; they came, literally, by the thousands every single morning, fighting with each other for a chance for life. Blizzards and cold made no difference to them, they were always on hand; they were on hand two hours before the sun rose, an hour before the work began. Sometimes their faces froze, sometimes their feet and their hands; sometimes they froze all together—but still they came, for they had no other place to go.

This is an out-of-the-way monument to a significant part of Chicagos past when the city was hogbutcher of the world, in Carl Sandburgs terms. This spot is also the home of the Fallen 21 memorial, a monument to firefighters killed in the Stockyards fire of 1910. Its interesting to stand in this spot and imagine what life must have been like back then when this area was bustling with activity. Today, its a quiet industrial park.
