Absolutely beautiful!Doesnt matter if you, not unlike myself, cannot understand art (but are generally appreciative of it)... this thing is a piece of beauty. Surrounded by modern architecture in the greyscale colors, the red color of the flamingo pops out perfectly.. its grandiose and serene; the most beautiful piece of art in Chicago, hands down!
Alexander Calders structure is a nice contrast to The symmetrical Mies Van Der Rohe buildings surrounding it.
Great spot to sit and eat a donut
Flamingo, created by noted American artist Alexander Calder, is a 53-foot (16 m)[2] tall stabile located in the Federal Plaza in front of the Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, Illinois, United States.[3] It was commissioned by the United States General Services Administration and was unveiled in 1974, although Calders signature on the sculpture indicates it was constructed in 1973 (Source: Wikipedia)
This place is for people who have an eye for art and people who like to relax. Many people go there to do work or just to hang out. Although it gets packed you can still relax. There are many ways to get there but the best option is to go by bus in my opinion. For people that like to be alone and think this place is not for you.. you might get distracted by the noise or the people walking.
It should have been pink.
ICONIC. We stayed at a hotel right next door so we saw it everyday. Love the courtyard, there was a farmers market one day. Great to sit and people watch.
Pretty but I liked it as a land mark. I’d got lost then see it and I’d be able to figure out where I am haha
Nice sculpture!
This is an impressive piece of art. The contrasting colors that come out with the adjacent buildings is very scenic. One of the must see places in chicago downtown. I tried to take some unique perspectives of this sculpture and hope the shot justified it.
Bigger than I thought it would be. Nice to see the sculptures throughout the city.
Weird sculpture but nice for a photo
Nice place to sit and watch downtown go by.
This is a popular place to see the famous sculpture and unique artwork that you may have never known of before in position on the outside of the federal building where you can buy postage stamps. This piece of art is of more than one photo and video productions of mine that is uploaded to YouTube or in my Google photo album.
Located in Chicagos Federal Plaza in front of the Federal Building, this sculpture is a excellent example about Chicagos love of art, and the wonderful habit of displaying great art in public places, for all to enjoy. The Flamingo is the work of noted American artist Alexander Calder, and was commissioned by the General Services Administration. The stabile, as it was termed by Calder, bears the date of 1973, the year Calder presented the model for his sculpture in the Art Institute. The Flamingo was actually unveiled a year later, in 1974. At the same time another great piece of art by Calder, his mobile named The Universe, was unveiled in the lobby of the Sears Tower (Willis Tower). Unfortunately, The Universe was dismantled and put into storage in March of 2017.The Flamingo is 53 ft high, and weighs 50 tons. It is a steel structure painted in bright vermillion. This bright color makes an almost shocking contrast to the black International Style highrises surrounding it. It is open and invites the public not just to look, but to interact with it, to walk around and under it, to explore and experience.
Great sculpture nestled amongst the high rises. Worth a visit especially since your be most likely going through this area anyway
One of the citys best and most welk-known pieces of public art.
This giant, red sculpture has been around for nearly 50 years! It makes a cameo in Ferris Buellers Day Off and is definitely worth seeing in person if youve never stopped by it before.
Who knew you could review a sculpture! Well this thing was amazing. I shot it 4am on Sunday morning and really found the lighting enjoyable. If you were wanting to check out a classic sculpture this is it. Calder is a genius and this deserves a look.
Famous structure of a Flamingo. Made of steel.
With its design and structure, you cant help admiring it.
Its a beautiful art piece. I like its contrast with all gray and black buildings around it.
Pass by this structure everyday since I work nearby. Such a site to see.
Put on your To See List....
Calders Flamingo is great public art, worth too see, especially during night hours, when flamingo has special lighting. This square is popular during political and social meetings and manifestations.
Beautiful! Didnt stay long, too cold out, but more impressive in person that I imagined!
Walk right up to it and get your photo taken with the flamingo! Its been featured in many movies! Matt Damon has been filmed walking through here in the movie The Informant, which by the way- is a true story, not just a movie. #MattDamonFan
Visiting Alexander Calders Flamingo, 50 W Adams St, Chicago, IL 60610 is great. Its a short walk from the Sears Tower, Union Station and Ogilvie Station. Another masterpiece of public art on display in the Chicago Loop for all to enjoy! Well worth stopping to see the scale of the art installation.
If you are visiting Chicago, this is a definite site to stop and see! Just walking near and underneath it makes you feel a certain awe about the huge orange-red structure. You feel tiny compared to it. And its curves are mezmerizing!
One more urban installation I loved in Chicago. The sterngth of the red steel and the harmony of the curves contrast with the lines and the blackish of the tall buildings around. One more must-see.
Its quite massive really, very hard to take a picture from the plaza. But cool to walk around the sculpture and see it from different angles.
Im in language arts, and very bored. :( So Im writing google reviews.
A favorite place of mine to hang out. And of course calders flamingo is monumental.
Nice, special to the night!
Interesting statue. I dont, but i think almost noone knows what is this. :)
A must-see work of public art in the Loop. This sculpture by Alexander Calder is one of the iconic images you see in movies and TV shows that take place in Chicago.
Its the best public sculpture I have ever seen.
An iconic sculpture in downtown Chicago. Must see!
Very nice!
One of the most captivating places in the city. Especially on an empty day
Nice plaza in the middle of the city, the structure is very unique and striking.
A hard-to-miss, giant orange sculpture that is photographed by tourists, locals, and photography students on a daily basis. Located on the Federal Plaza, nestled in between the Post Office, Kluczynski Building and Dirksen Courthouse, it also stands watch over a nice farmers market on Tuesdays, May-October. A quick walk around the Kluczynski Building to the lobby of the Metcalfe Building at 77 W. Jackson will reward you with another sculpture worth studying, by artist Frank Stella.
Ok- this is an interesting sculpture. The first time I saw it I sort of went, Whaaaaa? and had to go back and look at it. I believe the artist has work in Houston as well, but it could be some knock off. But then again... how many people knock off this type of art at this size? Doesnt matter I guess...What matters is that you should stop and stand under it/near it/away from it, and see it from various angles. Its as much of a must see as that giant eyeball. (Another Whaaaaaa? from my yokelsided self.)
Not worth visiting.
Serene place to sit and have a coffee in a bustling city
Weirdly nice
Is this supposed to be what government looks like? Huge, ugly, imposing, and no one would have bought it if they had the choice.
Beautiful!

Flamingo, created by noted American artist Alexander Calder.
Great contrast with the federal buildings.
Made with the same Gary, IN steel as the buildings in the surrounding Federal Plaza in order to unify it with the plaza. But Calder made his sculpture red to add a little variety as well.
