Best tour to do! Our tour guide was Steve and he did just a phenomenal job. His attention to detail on each of the locations was great. He knew so much about Charleston and his love for the city came out in his tour. We learned so much about the little secrets, fabulous homes, and lives of Charlestons long ago citizens. I highly recommend this tour to anyone curious about Charlestons past and present.
Jim did a great job showing us a seldom-seen side of Charleston via the back alleys and hidden passageways in the historic district. Fascinating and full of information... its clear he has a passion for this historic city, as well as an appreciation for efforts to ensure its preservation. Be sure to ask about the ironwork artisan Philip Simmons!
Evans was knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining as he walked us through the streets of Charleston. He seemed especially keen on pointing out dozens of plant varieties and even knew their Latin names! His story about Robert Smalls inspired me to buy his biography. This tour is the best value of several I’ve had in Charleston.
When our tour guide evans was actually focused on the tour, it was incredibly informative and very interesting. We just found that he was easily distracted and felt compelled to socialize with anyone passing by that he knew. Beyond that it was an interesting tour.
Excellent! My wife and I Loved the tour. Very informative and we loved our tour guide Evans. He was very knowledgeable about Charleston and the surrounding area. His stories are great! Glad we booked.
Jim, our tour guide, was fantastic!! His knowledge of the history of the city was in itself outstanding but he also has extensive knowledge of the homes, architecture styles and the vegetation. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see what makes Charleston so unique.
Jim did an amazing job! So knowledgeable and fun to walk with. Loved all the off the beaten path streets we ended up on. One word of advise when you go-some of us needed bug spray! Worth every bite!
Evans was a outstanding tour guide. Very knowledgeable, engaging and funny. Fun learning experience and would highly recommend the tour, especially with evans!
Thank you Evans for an awesome walking tour. You were quite whimsical and entertaining as well. So very knowledgeable. We came away with an emense amount knowledge of the history of America and Charleston. We’ll be back for more.
So easy to work with.. came to our hotel and gave us a special tour. Capt Bob was great.
Our host was entertaining and kind to other tourists who were not in our group. He seemed to have a good relationship with locals along the tour route.
Jim was terrific! I have done tours in Boston with Harvard history professors as tour guides. Jim is every bit as good as them. He is very knowledgeable, professional and courteous. I would recommend this tour to anyone
Dennis our tour guide was outstanding. Funny, witty and full of historical information. Highly recommended!!!
Great tour! We learned alot about the towns history and the small passageways that weave through it.
Jim’s (Charlestons Alleys and Hidden Passages) tour was amazing. Never missed a beat. Great guy with a passion and vast knowledge of the city of Charleston and history in general. Would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone. Highly considering taking a different tour with him as well for more exploration and information.
Amy was amazing. The detailed history of the city made it come alive.
Evans was great! He shared his extensive knowledge of Charleston with us in an informative and friendly manner.
Evan was a great tour guide with copious amounts of knowledge of the Charleston area. Enjoyed hearing about everything from plants to iron gates to homes and local history of Charlestonians working together. He took great pride in the history of his town. Happy to have the “mayor” as our guide for two hours on a Saturday.
Great tour- knowledgeable guide- beautiful and historic spots
My friend and I did the Charleston’s Alleys and Hidden Passages tour with Jim on our last full day in Charleston. What a great way to finish up our visit to Charleston! Jim took us to some absolutely beautiful places in the city that we would have overlooked or not known to visit. The tour is done at a nice, leisurely pace and strolling through these secret nooks and crannies of the city while listening to Jim share his vast knowledge of Charleston with us was a real treat. Jim took time before the tour to give us some recommendations for where to get some good barbecue and stayed around after the tour to answer any questions from people in the group. This informative tour was one of the highlights of our visit to Charleston and I am truly glad I found it online.
We got to go on a tour with Evans and he was incredible. Very knowledgeable of the history and dear to his heart with family ties to the American Revolutionary War. He made our experience very personal and unforgettable. We also laughed a lot! So much fun!
We took this tour with Evans. It was a very interesting tour, and even though we had taken a historic walking tour earlier in the week, we still got a lot out of this one. Largely because Evans was an amazing tour guide. He had so many stories and told them in a very interesting way. It was fun to be on the tour and listen to him. I would highly recommend the tour, and especially Evans.
Jim was very good. A good mix of history and informative detail. His pre tour text reminder was a nice touch.
My husband and I took the Alleys and Hidden Passageways tour with our guide, Bill. He was wonderful. He texted us the day before the tour to confirm our meeting time and place and he also reminded us to dress warmly as it was a chilly January morning. I really appreciated that!Bill’s tour was informative, he really knows his history. The alleys and passageways he showed us were beautiful! We would never have found them on our own. This tour made us fall in love with Charleston even more. I highly recommend Low Country Walking tours and Bill!
We took the Charleston’s Alleys and Hidden Passages with tour guide Bill, and it was the best! We saw so many cute alleys that we would never had known about on our own. The group was small; the pace and the length of time was just right. Bill was full of information that appealed to both me and my husband. Take this tour!
Our tour guide, Captain, was not only a great historian but even his knowledge about the architecture and botany of Charleston was incredible! Def learned a lot from Captain. Going down the alleys of Charleston is not only beautiful but incredibly interesting as well! Would highly recommend this tour to any first timers visiting Charleston. Thanks again, Captain!
This was hands down the best part of our trip. We did the Alleyway and passage tour with Jim. It was fun and informative. A good mix of history, fun facts and recommendations. I have never been and didnt know a thing and left the trip feeling like a Charleston expert! Learning the backstory of Charleston made the rest our trip 10x more fun! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Our tour with Low Country Walking Tours was our favorite experience during our visit to Charleston (Charleston’s Alleys and Hidden Passage Ways). Jim’s impressive knowledge of the city and his presentation style made the 2 hours fly by. He even stayed after the tour to answer questions. We called the office to schedule another tour and Christina was extremely helpful, going above and beyond to accommodate us. I wish I could give them 6 stars!
Dennis had a wealth of information for us on Charleston history, architecture and landscapes. He showed true passion for his job which made the whole experience very enjoyable. We’ll be back!
My wife and I have taken at least 10 different tours in Charleston over the years, and this was the best tour weve ever had. Our guide, Jim, was a true professional. He is extremely interesting as a person and knows his trade inside and out. We were extremely lucky because we booked the tour on a day where it was just the two of us with Jim. The tour was more like spending time with an old friend who knew how paint a picture with his words to completely pull you in. We walked and talked for the entire two hours. The tour was more like time traveling through his descriptions and tales of the city. We talked architecture, horticulture, sailing, battles, blacksmithing, city planning and management, natural disasters, and local politics. While we were walking around town Jim introduced us to at least 10 different locals who all greeted him with a smile and stopped to say hello. This is the kind of tour that would be great for a group of friends (any age). Everyone can get involved pointing out interesting things, and Jim will weave them into the tour. There is so much to see!Besides Charlestons history, Jim is also an expert on the local scene. He pointed out several hidden gems along the way such as the Bakers Bar. It is the only basement bar in Charleston, which is a big deal because the city is only ~ 8 above sea level. They dont advertise their location so I probably would have never known about it, or even found it by accident. They started as a Speak Easy 100-years ago, and now they have the best pizza in Charleston. The owner also owns 2 bakeries, so you know the crust is to die for. The tour starts/ends right around the corner from it, so check it out after your tour. If youre worried about pace or difficulty I can say that as a 52-year old I found it easy. Your certainly not doing a lot of hill climbing, but you will walk on uneven surfaces. So if thats a problem, you may have to make alternate plans. This was my only Lowcountry Walking Tour, so I cant speak for the other guides, but I can 100% say that Jim is awesome and if youre lucky enough to be on one of his tours, Youre Lucky Enough!
We walked with Jim on the Alleys and Hidden Passages tours. It was great. Jim is knowledgable, funny, and has great stories that highlight the eras and evolution of Charleston. Highly recommend.
Evans was a wealth of Charleston knowledge. Fun tidbits and stories infused with facts and finds. Well worth the time and money!
My daughter and her boyfriend are in town. Bill was our guide and did a great job keeping everyone entertained. His knowledge and insight about the area was extensive. As a former history teacher you could tell Bill has done research on his own to make sure his facts are accurate as possible. He also had some props along that helped reinforce the history. Overall great job Bill.... Highly recommend!
My wife and I had the pleasure of walking the back streets and allies with Evans Byrd. Evans knowledge of the South, passion for Charleston, and his desire to spread the word to all who come to visit, was evident as he welcomed us before the walk started. As we walked we met some of Evans friends, they were everywhere. Im not sure if this was Southern Charm or Evans every day.Charleston is a beautiful city, the people of Charleston are warm and welcoming. If you have the chance to visit, go and enjoy. If you have the chance to walk with Evans Byrd, be prepared to be in the company of an unforgettable Southern Gentleman.Have a great jurney
We did the alleys and hidden passageways with Jim as our tour guide. It was a great tour and Jim was a great guide that really cares about the information that hes giving you. He gave a great suggestion to see McLeod Plantation as well which we did this morning which was also amazing! Definitely recommend!
We took the Charleston Alleys and Hidden Passages tour with Evans and thoroughly enjoyed it. He was knowledgeable about the history of the area, and was informative and entertaining. He also seem to know everybody in town and as a plus he really liked his flowers.
My Mom and I took the tour with Bill and it was amazing. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and I love that it is clear he did not memorize a script. Highly recommend this tour company! Also, incredibly impressed with their customer service. We started a tour at 2pm and were unable to continue because I began feeling bad, and the guide offered to reschedule us on another tour the next day. We took them up on it and called to ask if we could reschedule for the next morning and they went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. Very impressed, will most likely go back with my husband. Thank you Lowcountry walking tours!
Best part of our trip! Evan was fantastic! Highly recommend for anyone visiting the city.
Jims narration made our Alleyway tour a walking history lesson, with a bit of humor thrown in. His informative tour was as good as it gets. As a USC grad, I was familiar with a bit of Charlestons history, but, had never heard of difference makers like Susan Pringle Frost, whose groundbreaking preservation work was instrumental in the Charleston landscape we see today. From imported trees, to carriage stone mounting blocks, to architectural home types- and their purposes, Jims account, was interesting, and enjoyable. It was two hours of touring that ended too soon!
Jim was a great tour guide! We truly enjoyed it. We learned so much. It was the highlight of our trip to Charleston!
Loved the tour. Fun to get off the main streets and learn history and architecture. Jim, the tour guide, was great.
8th generation guide has a wealth of knowledge and fun stories that keep you engaged while enjoying the beautiful scenery and wonderful architecture. Highly recommend to all visiting Charleston.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Captain Bob. He’s very knowledgeable; and even though we’ve had other tours and have visited Charleston many times, we learned a lot and enjoyed a different perspective with the Alleys and Passage Ways Tour.
Evans was great. Knowledgeable, kind, funny. Wed go again! Thank you.
Went on the alleyways and hidden passages tour and it was great! Evans was an excellent guide.
My family and I came into Charleston for a wedding and decided to take this tour. Jim was our tour guide and what a wonderful guide he was. The day we went was almost 100 degrees and Jim made sure we were kept in the shade when possible. Jim was fantastic with all of his knowledge and knew all of the answers to our questions. I would highly recommend this tour over the horse drawn tours if youre able.
This was such an interesting and informative tour! I learned a lot that I didn’t know. Highly recommend!
I have lived in Charleston now for 3 years. My parents moved down 9 months ago so for Mother’s Day, my husband and I gifted my mom the Alleys and Hidden Passages walking tour. We went on the tour yesterday morning. The weather was perfect! We met our tour guide, Bill Stanton, at 9:30am. We spent a little over 2 hours touring the city we call home. I learned so many facts and interesting stories/history about people, buildings and places on the streets I have walked many times. This was an amazing tour! Bill was very insightful, and patient with us as we asked questions and stopped many times for pictures. I would highly recommend this to anyone!!
Really enjoyed Charlestons Alleys and Hidden Passages tour. Highly recommend!
Bill led our tour while we were visiting Charleston on vacation. We had a great time and he was very knowledgeable and kept thing interesting. I recommend this to anyone visiting Charleston.
Jim did an outstanding job of providing information and the history of the area we walked! He was knowledgeable, thorough, and provided lots of interesting facts - both historical and architectural.
Had an awesome time on the hidden alleys tour with Jim! He was so informative and enthusiastic, we learned a lot and had fun at the same time. I definitely recommend a tour with him.
Great tour guide! We came from Louisiana and have taken many tours. The Back Ally tour was interesting and Jim was Knowledgeable and friendly. Thanks Jim!
I just got to take a tour with Bill and it was an awesome experience. He is not a tour leader who has memorized a script, but a real historian who has done research far above and beyond the average guide. I learned local history and heard great stories, both about famous Americans and quirky local characters, all while seeing the unique architecture, beautiful flowers and trees, and winding back alleys of historic Charleston. I never had a question he couldnt answer or an interest he couldnt satisfy. I dont know when Ill get the chance again, but Id love to take another tour with Bill.
Really enjoyable walking tour - very informative without being too much- highly recommend !
Jim was outstanding, friendly and knowledgeable! I would definitely recommend him and this tour!!!
Bill was exceptional. We were so fortunate to be accompanied by an excelled teacher of history with a hip and informative sense of humor and historical record. I simply can’t imagine anyone else as good as Bill. Being with him for two hours made us want to move to Charleston .
Evans was great, very knowledgeable and personable.
Cant say enough good things about this tour or our guide, Evans. We saw parts of Charleston that we never would have seen. So much interesting history and Evans sure knows his history and is a great speaker!
Outstanding tour from Jim...incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining.
Great tour with lots of historic information. Enjoyed this walking tour immensely. Bill our tour guide, retired history teacher was full of interesting facts and a wealth of knowledge about Charelston. This 2 hour walking tour was over quickly because of his great presentation. So if you seek history and knowledge. Go with Bill.
We took 2 of the tours. Jim was our guide for both. We enjoyed both and thought the narration and stories were terrific. One of the best ways to see Charleston.
U guys can explore on your own if u want to save some money....the place is historic and there are many beautiful homes made in the 1700s and 1800s
We did a walking tour of the alleys of Charleston on 11/26. Bill Stanton was our guide. He is extremely knowledgeable and engaging. I rarely go for things like this unless my wife drags me along. I was fascinated for the entire 2.5 hours. If you want to see the truly hidden treasures of Charleston, run dont walk to take this tour. And ask for Bill if you can.
Amazing tour! Bill Stanton was an absolutely wonderful guide and so knowledgeable as well. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
We took a walking tour of the hidden passageways and alleys of Charleston. It was one of our favorite afternoons there. Evans Byrd was our tour guide. A native Charlestonian, he had a wealth of knowledge, and was passionate about his beautiful city and its history. He was entertaining and a great story teller! Moreover, after the tour, I mentioned I wanted to see a couple of churches, and he actually walked with us and gave us a tour of each! I would highly reccommend Evans for any tour of the area! In fact, if he ever returns to Wyoming, we’d love to return the favor and show him a bit more about our great state!
Booked tour for two college girlfriends and myself. We were expecting the run of the mill, fast talking and memorized speech. Wowza, were we ever wrong when we met up with Evans our tour guide. Evans was born and raised in Charleston, he had the most wonderful attitude and was full of so many historical facts and amazingly knew many of the people that lived in or had lived in the homes we viewed on the tour. We went through alleys and side streets and Evans answered all our many questions!! Being a history and antique buff I couldnt have asked for a more delightful and enriching experience. The three of us agree that our walking tour with Evans was certainly the highlight of our trip to Charleston with the exception of the shrimp and grits at SNOB!!!! Thank you ever so much!!
What a fabulous way to learn Charleston history while enjoying its outdoors, beautiful homes, and culture.Bernadell Larson and Stuart Thompson
We had Bill for our walking tour and he made for a very informative, enjoyable experience. He took his time and we learned alot.
