Went to the house as part of Gullah tour went and saw the Forge. Was wonderful see the house of an American legend and treasure.
Good experience for the kids even if it was closed cause of this epidemic going around.kids finally got a chance to give to their great grandfathers house but could only see it from the outside hopefully next experience is much better.
Very interesting history.
The rich culture and history lesson you get from visiting is priceless. This man was Charleston. Visit asap.
Great to see where he lived to make his famous gates!
Very disappointed that powers that be have not maintained the historic home! We took the very enlightening Frankly Charleston Black History tour, that gave details on the contributions of Mr. Phillips to Charleston and other noteable African American who are not a part of the othe tour! So many unsung heroes/ contributors to the history of this town and state!
Nice to walk through and see his work. Actually got a chance to see a gentleman make some pieces.
A number of years ago my husband and I were taking a self guided tour of Charleston. We were looking for a garden that appeared on our tourist map. Never did find the garden, but when we stopped to ask a gentleman sitting on his porch where it might be we had the privilege of meeting Mr. Simmons in person. He was a totally amazing man. He invited us into his house where we spent close to an hour speaking with him. He showed us his memorabilia and told us his inspiring story. He then insisted that we visit his workshop. Not only did he show us his anvil, he reached underneath and pulled out the actual hammer he used in his work. He then handed it to me and had my husband take photos. On our next visit we learned that he was in a nursing home so we drove there and again had a most pleasant visit with this remarkable and gifted man. May he rest in peace and may his good works continue.
Very informative
If youre ever in Charleston SC, you must visit this unique piece of Black American history.
Only got to tour the outside work space due to the home being closed. Was on a tour with Gullah Tours..very informative
Historic site to see.
Interesting as part of a guided tour. Limited if on own.
Great Charleston African American History, that focus on anvils and iron works.
Informational
His shop still has the anvil, forge, a couple of hammers, and some scroll forms on the wall. It looks pretty empty and there are no examples of the work that made him famous. If you want to see his work, get the book Charleston Blacksmith and there is a map with the locations of his gates, grills and fences. Then you will really see what a master blacksmith he was.Ornamental Ironwork of Charleston also had his work, as well as.
Very nice. Keeps the history alive
Love this place!! Took pictures with the staff.. Lots of pictures of Mr Simmons, he will be remembered for his iron and welding works..
