We really loved this place! Very easy to find using the direction s from other reviews and maps. Watched an amazing sunset, definitely would have liked to camp but it was a bit windy and we found a place in Winslow next to the water (McHood Park) that we wanted to spend the following day at. Go here if youre in the area!
Great hidden gem to see and walk into the desert. The sign has only an outline of Arizona on it, but you can see the old facilities from the highway. The road is in some disrepair, easily passable in any vehicle. Drive north along the rim and you can find a dilapidated trail heading down into the desert. Keep heading north and you will come to a turnaround to send you back to the main road.
Beautiful rim view of the Little Painted Desert. Close to the road. No sign marking it except a little rock wall. About mile 360 marker.
If you want to see an amazing sunrise or sunset... Time your stop here and you wont be disappointed
Pretty difficult to find. You realize its beauty when youre actually there. You drive on the Rim Road, find a parking spot, then find a good place where you could actually walk down and enjoy the view. Not an easy hike but worth it. Please note: this is the real Painted Desert, not the one that shows up on gps.
The views are spectacular. The colors and shapes and vistas are amazing.Unfortunately, the park is in total disrepair. The entry sign into the park has been destroyed, the road is full of potholes, and graffiti is on every man made structure.Enjoy the view, but be saddened by the lack of human care for this beautiful place.
Beautiful! Its a shame the park is no longer maintained.
Amazing little canyon you would totally miss if you werent looking for it. Only a very small stone marquee missing its plaque and graffitied. Use your navigation and you will find it. Weirdest thing abt the beautiful site is that it is not maintained whatsoever. Road in is full of potholes but doable even in a small car. Broken alcohol bottles everywhere, restrooms destroyed and even saw a condom on the road - must have been a good valentines day. Despite all this a must stop, pics dont do it justice!
Great view of a beautifully-colored desert landscape. Worth the 10-minute drive north of I-40 to check it out.The road into the park was horribly maintained with large potholes in several places. The buildings and picnic shelters are covered with graffiti. And the grounds have trash and general signs of partying.Be careful near the edge of the rim as erosion cuts back underneath your feet in places.
Pretty cool looking place...
Definitely worth the detour if youre in the area!
FREE & Easy access, apps 10 miles off the main road on a paved side road then maybe 1/4 mi on the well maintained dirt access road. Several picnic pavilions overlook the beautiful scenery. You can follow the aapx 3/4 mi rim road by vehicle or on foot for additional outstanding views.PS youll pass Holomovi State Park on your way to the Little Painted Desert. Learning about and seeing the rich history of the area is worth the nominal admission fee.
Im so glad I finally took the time to check this place out! What a beautiful example of mother nature! Honestly you need to see it yourself the pictures do not do any justice. The place is not kept up but if you look past the trash and graffiti this place is just amazing!
What a beautiful, hidden treasure! So glad Gerri, from Sun Valley RV Resort, told us about this place. You go west on I-40 and take exit 257. Travel appox. 13 miles until you see a rock marker (missing the sign) on the left side. There is also a worn, wooden sign that says Little Painted Desert.
A few miles off the interstate, a great place to view the painted desert. I recommend sunset or sunrise.
The view is beautiful. There is a picnic area . but some people are just pigs.
Some beautiful views in this neck of the desert. Ate lunch with the kids and gf here. Sure would love to go back. The sun and the shade hitting the sides of the rocks make for a spectacular view. Please just watch your kids. If the fall over there is no where but down to go.
Absolutely stunning!
Not very clean or many amenities. Best part is west of the ramadas where the views are.
Beautiful And worth the trip
Snow top Crest, still calming n beautiful
Nice beautiful sunset
Beautiful place had never been there. My daughter took me there for my birthday today.
This place is where the locals enjoy this little natural wonder. There are no services here.
Very nice and a great place for photos.
Painted Desert is place where its colorful and save as a screen saver in your phone...
Best place recommended buy a visitor center ever. If you ever go here make sure you visit this place amazing cant say enough about it I will definitely drive back again wow just wow
Looks like the badlands
Absolutely beautiful ️
Gem in the high desert. The park is quite frankly a pit. Not maintained, no services. The view of the Painted Desert is probably the best you will ever see.We never fail to stop and look.
Beautiful views! Not that far off I40. Worth the detour.
This place definitely needs a facelift, but, it will eventually be vandalized as it is now. Im native and what irks me is this Native Pride BS spray painted on one of the buildings. If you have pride you dont vandalize or destroy property, you leave it alone and be respectful. Im sure other visitors feel the same way; its a beautiful place to visit and take in what the creators painting looks like.I give this place 2 stars because of the trash thats being thrown over the edge-- what a shame.Being respectful can take you a long way.
Its a beautiful hidden little spot! Check it out during the sunset for a stunning view!
Simple but beautiful
Beautiful hidden gem. You wouldnt know it was there if you didnt pull in. Go up the dirt road to the north, it has the best views. There did not seem to be a safe way to go down but maybe if you walked along the rim you could find one.
Surreal atmosphere. We were lucky enough to find a way down. It is a tough hike, but definitely worth it. Tons of petrified wood! Restrooms look to be permanently closed. Parking lot and gravel road is very rough and bumpy.
No services... Just awesome views
Beautiful location. Moderate hike down into the canyon. The colors are awesome

Trashy
Good for a quick stop but like the national park better
