Lands of the United States were set aside by Congress, Executive Order, or otherwise acquired in order to conserve and protect areas of untold beauty and grandeur, historical importance, and uniqueness for future generations. The tradition of capturing images of these special places started with explorers who traveled with paint and canvas or primitive photo apparatus. It was the sharing of these images that led to the designation of these areas as national parks and monuments. Visitors to national parks today continue to memorialize their visits through videos and photographs.
Love the place, I recommend everyone to go there at least once!
Fun place to take pictures. Best to arrive early because its very busy. While we were there half was closed for restoration while the other half was being used for school group photos. Not necessarily somewhere you need to take photos. However if its not too busy, The Ellipse can be a fun place to take photos and see some history.
I love visiting or just passing by this place which is between the White House and the Washington Monument. Its also good to go for a walk when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Public transportation is the best way to go. ️️
From the McPherson Square Station, this is the best part of the stroll along the path leading from the White House to the Washington Monument. Cherry blossoms in full bloom when spring is set makes for the most gorgeous pictures and the best decor for portraits.
Running the nations capital around the ellipse. This is the White House staff parking around a big oval field. People are always playing some type of sports game here. You can also get a really good view of the White Houses south lawn. Dont go beyond the the fence or Secret Service will yell at you. Yhe military Infantry Insignias are on all around the outer part of the ellipse. You also have a clear view of the Washington monument.
The Ellipse is a 52-acre park located south of the White House fence and north of Constitution Avenue and the National Mall. Properly, the Ellipse is the name of the five-furlong circumference street within the park.
Amazing spot to start your DC visit.

Nice views between the White House and the Washington Monument.
It was a fantastic experience! I was in awe of how close I was to the White House. Spectacular experience, great for family pictures.
I love it.
Visiting Washington DC is one destination every American should strive to visit. Leave your politics at home, visit this city no matter who is President, there is so much to see and learn.
This is a great place to take a jog and to see the White House.
Great views all around and good public connectivity
Great walk!
A very nice place to visit where you can clearly see the white house
Toured the White House grounds, the day after Christmas. The crowds were all posturing for the perfect selfie, with the grand National Christmas Tree in the background. Children were fixated on a number of trains, set up to encircle the base of the Christmas Tree. Then you will find smaller trees decorated and representing, all 50 states and the U.S. territories. Thanks to private funding, this tradition was able to be accessible to the public, in lieu of the current government shutdown.
We went to see the National Christmas Tree, and enjoyed the walk with the individually decorated trees for the 50 states and Territories. There were very few people at 9:30pm on. Monday night.
Great to see when the Christmas Tree is lit
The Ellipse -- so named because an elliptical road goes around the expanse of green behind the White House -- is also called the Presidents Park. Each year at Christmas, the President lights the nations Christmas tree and the Pageant of Peace takes place. Although presidents used to light an annual Christmas tree, the Pageant itself began in 1954. It is an honor to be related directly to the man who conceptualized the Pageant and helped bring it about.
This was a cool place to be when in Washington DC I loved being here
Vape Rally 2019. We vape We vote !!!
Do NOT expect this place to look nice in the winter season. I expected it to look dead and brown, but I did not expect it to look like a construction companys main parking lot for all of their fencing and equipment. Extremely disappointed in how trashy it looked. However, I also understand that they have a job to do and have to put equipment somewhere during projects.
A must see place to enjoy with family or friends
I just love DC, all the area of the nationals park and better off if you go during cherry blossom time. The smithonian complex is a must see while you are there.
History will be made here
Beautiful, except for the self-immolations, which takes 2 stars away.
Nice open field for family outings in the warmer months in the nations capital.
The Ellipse is a vast and beautiful green area to relax or picnic close to The White House. In addition, inside this large park, we can admire the National Christmas Tree during the end of year holidays.
Its Christmas season and the tree is now lit. Could have been a lot better therefore, I would prefer National Harbor, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center or DC City Center over the White House Christmas Tree.
Took a.good while.from nj to DC and back.but it worth it
Always enjoy coming to the National Christmas Tree each year. But its a shame that they stopped the Yule Log some years back.
Great place to visit during Christmas or spring.
Would make an excellent cricket pitch.
Good view of DC buildings. Grass is not manicured much at all.
We came here with friends from out of town who had never been to DC so we all enjoyed the great photos we got of all of us with the White House in the background. Also, on the grounds is the Boy Scout Memorial, which seemed to be in need of some attention, especially the concrete foundation for the fountain, which, I hope, is turned on in the Summer.
Simply wonderful.
A great spot to view the White House from.
Lovely House
Must visit at least once
An historic opportunity to wander and learn. Beautifully maintained. Needs more public restrooms.
I need a no star for this foolery today. So my kids were to perform at 1pm but the president decided to fly out so everything was shut down for a little over 30 mins. Rather then push the time for all the performances we were told that we needed to be off the stage by 1:50. The kids hit the stage and guess what??? No power to the stage which meant now we had 10 minutes to perform in silence! To top it off they didnt even have zones blocked off so people that didnt have enough kindness to wait were just walking right in front of the stage! Total fiasco. I smiled to keep the kids smiling but inside...
Great place to walk around and enjoy the beautiful city.
Plenty of free museums. No parking.
Was fun to trigger libs and ride a scooter around singing christmas songs.
Loved visiting all the monument and everything around them.
CIRCLE BOI
While the Ellipse doesnt offer a wide variety of activites, you can certainly create your own there. I even got to personally see the president board his helicopter, and take off from the front lawn of the White House.
Great for families
Cool to see the White House
Beautiful train garden and Christmas tree display
Great views of the White House.
Beautiful grounds decorated for Christmas. Many areas blocked off though, need to visit after everything is set up and accessible, and/or when it is warm.
The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. and has been the residence of every U.S. President since John Adams in 1800. The term, White House, is often used as a metonym for the president and his advisers. The residence was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban in the neoclassical style. Hoban modelled the building on Leinster House in Dublin, a building which today houses the Oireachtas, the Irish legislature. Construction took place between 1792 and 1800 using Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) added low colonnades on each wing that concealed stables and storage. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Exterior construction continued with the addition of the semi-circular South portico in 1824 and the North portico in 1829.
Not as good as Lafayette Square
Beautiful place for the family to be outdoors in our Nations Capital.
Nice Experience.
Good place to get a shot of the south view of The White House. And also the White House Christmas Tree. But whats with the 10 PM turning off the lights during the holiday season? Does daddy get mad if tourists are out past 10 PM to enjoy the holidays and have a look at the Presidents Christmas Tree?
Always cool to walk past with views of the White House, Washington Monument, all the way to the Jefferson Memorial
This is the best place to see the White House and take pictures of it (unless you have tickets to get into the White House of course). There are sometimes protestors, but thats free speech at work and Ive never seen the protestors get violent. The best time to visit is between Thanksgiving and Christmas when they have the National Christmas tree up and a tree from each state. The state trees are decorated with ornaments made by children from that state. Park at the Ronald Reagan building for convenience or hunt for free street parking by the Daughters of the American Revolution building.

The Ellipse AKA Presidents Park is a 52-acre park located just south of the White House. The entire park is open to the public, and features various monuments and many concerts are held here throughout the year. The most famous event is the National Tree Lighting Ceremony every early December. Great area - bring the kids and the dogs (but please make sure to bring your doggie bags).
Nice and huge Park
Very interesting! Nice to see worldly culture as well as U.S. history
It was so neat to be here and experience this place. The capitol is truly special.
Nice place
I really enjoyed visiting the Christmas tree at Washington DC and it is really awesome and beautiful .
Couldnt get very close!
A good view of the White House from here.
Nice area.
Great park to walk or relax. Throughout the year multiple events take place at the Ellipse, including the lighting of the national Christmas tree in December.
Great running path and a large open field for various activities. Also serves as an excellent parking location for those that work in a federal capacity.
Enjoyed the benches and being able to experience the scenery without all that darn walking
No fun anymore
A lot of walking.
Oct 2018 - its under construction so nothing special. Avoid if possible.
Bringing history to life
Nice park with lots of walking paths
Empty park in front of the white house with nothing to see...
Good place for games, picnics or reflections
Awesome - Awesome - Awesome
Great for a Christmas walk
We came at the wrong time. the monument was closed and scaffolding all around and they were doing work on the lawn so we were really far from the white house and there were trees blocking it. but the reflecting pond was finished
Very tall
Nothing much to watch for. Always crowded and not worth the time.
A good place for sports and exercises. You can even see presidents helicopter passing by!
A great place to come see the White House.
A neat place to come and see the white house
National xmas tree and all the trees from different states is a great place to visit and the past 2 years has been t-shirt weather.
