The estuarium is small enough to see everything in one visit. We spent about an hour here with our 2 year old. There are some interesting art exhibits including one made of driftwood left by a hurricane that demonstrates the water cycle. There is a 12 min.video that shows images & aerial views of the Pamlico River & estuaries. There are some live animals on display including toads, blue crab, a corn snake, and a few fish. There are also some stuffed dead animals such as gray fox, swan, and river otter. The location is right in downtown Washington on the riverfront. An ice cream shop, Cups & Cones, is right next door and there is a childrens playground about a 2 minute walk down the riverfront. This is a great place to spend an afternoon.

Took the River Rover tour today. Great information and a new way to view the Pamlico and Tar River. Saw an Eagle. Tons of turtles. Reservations required, no charge, donations are appreciated. Pontoon holds max of 10 people. Takes approximately 1 1/2 hours. Time well spent.

Great place for a couple hours of exploration. My four year old, my three year old, & I all loved seeing the well done exhibits. There is a great water cycle demonstration & driftwood sculpture in the foyer, live animal displays, & very informative signage. After touring the building, we walked around outside. There is a very nice river walk, a playground, & a panadería (sweet bread store) all right in the same block. It was a great morning, & we would definitely go back!

The art installation in the lobby alone is worth the trip. Enjoy the tour and exhibits. Then, have a picnic on the back deck overlooking the brackish waters of the estuary. Not sure how to define brackish? Ask a docent! Docents are knowledgable welcoming and thorough. While you are there be sure to pick up a copy of their annual Pamlico Pinups fundraiser calendar.

$5 admission. Plan on 1 to 1 1/2 hours (plus possible boat excursion which occur some days). 10 minute video, VERY impressive displays with many artifacts, and a few small aquariums. This is a science museum - specifically: the life cycle of water as it relates to the bay.

This place is amazing! I used to go here as a kid and always enjoyed learning about the different ecological and historical events in the area. Being one of the only estuaries in the state, I reccommend it to anyone whos in the area. 5 stars.

Our troop went and had a guide and special program. It was a wonderful experience. If youre wondering if the special program is worth the extra $3 per child it is. The boys had a great time. We would have liked to have gone on a boat ride but they only have 1 boat ride a day with 10 people max. I was told that reservations for the boat ride should be made 4 months ahead. They really need another boat. Overall a great morning!

Well thought out exhibits, sculptures, and animal tanks to provide multiple styles of learning. The staff were so sweet, knowledgeable, and accommodating to our young learners. Definitely a stop on your way thru NC.

So the Estuarium is pretty informative but theres not a lot to do there so if you expect it to be this big aquarium and estuary cum museum then you are misguided. But it is a nice quaint place with a few animals and a lot of self explanatory lives and informatives which is fun for kids and for adults too.

Have been back a few times. I find something new each time I visit! The unique sculpture of the state of north carolina is amazing! Take the extra time to walk the wooden walk that leads to the left when leaving the estuarium building...see the wetlands project by the city of Washington...see all the marine life that calls it home... Frogs....turtles...dragonflies...waterlilies. The walk takes about 20 minutes if you stop and marvel at things a little bit! Was a great experience everytime I have visited

Educational and you can tell they appreciate having kids come visit. They can do a scavenger hunt as they walk through and receive a prize at the end! The only problem is that there were several interactive exhibits that simply didnt work. But its a nice place to learn about our local ecosystem and even historical facts about weather patterns and events.

Very nice place to go and learn with your family. I visited the Estuarium with my 10 year old daughter and her class. All the staff are great and very nice and polite. They had everything set up so the children could learn and have fun at the same time. I took my 6 yr old and a staff member gave her an age appropriate scavenger hunt just like she did the older children. We learned a lot as a family. I recommend you make a day of it. The waterfront is soooo beautiful. They offer boat rides starting in April. I am planning to take my children back to partake in that adventure.

Review №66

The staff was friendly and informative, but this place is not worth the $5 it costs to get in, which is sad. When you enter, youre greeted by a sculpture made of driftwood that supposedly represents the state. The top is pinecones, to represent the mountains, the middle is washed up bottles to represent the Raleigh/Durham area, and the coast is represented by parallel sticks. The pinecones are pretty clearly from long leaf pines, which dont grow in the mountains, the bottles look trashy (are they saying RDU is garbage??), and if you were not told that the parallel sticks were supposed to be plowed fields, youd have no idea. Dumb. The demonstration of the water cycle is neat. They have a small elevated track around the sculpture and lobby with a rubber ball that represents a water droplet. There is a short video presentation that includes some aerial photography, shot in standard definition, and seems to be more of a music video then an informative presentation. If the presentation were updated, in the vein of the BBC Life series, it would be worth watching. There are a few small aquariums, whose few fish only sometimes match those on the plaque. The location is very scenic, which is simultaneously the best and most disappointing part... Im just not sure the building is worth going into at all in its present format and condition. The whole place feels like some politicians Pet Project, that was underfunded, and constructed by that same politicians buddies, regardless of scientific qualifications, or vision. There is a lot of potential here, but sadly, its not being fulfilled. Youll be better off heading on out to the aquarium, and stopping at Goose Creek State Park.
