I really enjoyed my trip to the Korean War Veterans Memorial. The atmosphere took my breath away. Its almost hard to put it into words. All I can say is wow. Thank you to all of the brave men and women serving in our armed forces. You are truly Americas heroes. Never, for one second, think that we dont support you. Im here for each and every service member. You will always have my support. THANK YOU!
Helped my Uncle in the setup and memorial service. Vice president in attendance and south Korean president. Awesome memorial to those in the forgotten war. The bluebeards!
Very well done. Must see when youre in DC.
A poignant memorial for those that fought in a conflict that got the nickname The Forgotten War. It has a group of about 20 life size grey colored Soldiers moving forward out of a wood line and into a field. Running the length of the memorial is a granite wall with actual faces of Military Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airman that fought in the war. There are also a few quotes carved out to remind those that see this memorial that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE and we have to remember this.
My Onkel Frank Castro wuz in korea and didnt come back R.I.P. BRAV MEN OF KOREAN WAR
This memorial is not only breathtaking- it is extremely moving. The statues themselves are awe-inspiring and they really cause you to reflect on our history. The surrounding beauty is surreal and really add to the effect of this unforgettable memorial. This place is definitely a must see whether you are a tourist or a local.
Visited the Korean War Memorial again recently and enjoyed seeing this monument during the spring when the surrounding trees were full, offering a more attractive background for viewing the monument compared winter time visits. This is one of several important and impressive war memorials near the west end of The Mall. It is provocative monument, featuring 19 soldiers with full gear, spread in formation. It is nice composition and really nice to see when The Mall trees are flush with green. This really brings out the beauty of this particular monument.Given its proximity to the Lincoln Memorial & Reflection Pool, Vietnam and World War II monuments, you should expect to see lots of other people during your visit. Give this one 10 minutes of your time at least before moving on to other intended monument visits in the area. Dont hesitate to spend longer if this is an important monument to you personally.
I was here on a rainy day. The dark weather fit the Korean War and Vietnam War Memorial really well. I will never forget it.
This was one of our favorite memorials. The statues are so lifelike with the positions and posture. The wall of faces etched in stone looks blurry close and very clear as you step back. Try to make time to visit this one.
Soldiers walk through the field on patrol. You can feel their tension and fatigue. Very powerful and certainly worth your time.
Great concept for a war memorial with the statues of the soldiers spread out on patrol in various poses.I would have liked a little more respect from my fellow tourists as far as remembering what any war memorial actually represents.
Adjacent to the Lincolns Memorial commemorates the tragedy of war and pays tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of freedom.A war that is now almost forgotten to do by constant tensions between the US and North Korea in recent times. The monument tries to shape how was this conflict that collect so many lives on both sides.Worth a visit, the monument is truly impressive not only for artistic but for what it represents.
A little scary looking at night, but it was fun.
A great piece of American history. To pay respect
This memorial highlights the foot soldiers. These are men and women who paid the most during the Korean War. Surrounding the life-size statues of a patrol are the images that represent how the war was seen by the rest of the world.
“Freedom is not Free”. Thank you to the men and women who served so valiantly in Korea.
Even if you don’t know the history of the Korean War, spend a few minutes examining the faces on the statues and on the wall. The tragedy that was the “Forgotten War” is etched in stainless steel and stone for all to see and reflect. Visit on a misty, cool day to get the most out of it.
Do not forget the forgotten war. This memorial is very easy to visit if youre walking around D.C.
Enjoyed this place, like all monuments so much symbolism here. A good place to visit for anyone who has or knows someone who served in the Korean conflict. Each of the statues are made from steel and weigh about 1000lbs youll notice the names of every country who participated in the war on the kerb along with many laser etched photos on the marble wall.
It is very impressive. Here, I appreciate all the nations at Korean War. All the statues are like live veterans. They are still brave and beautiful, warm
It has been 12 years since I last visited this place, weirdly I have the most unforgettable images of the site among all those monuments in this city. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. This quote still resonates over the globe, especially over the two Koreas in this current page of the history. The brave, young American souls here, who fought for the freedom in a small peninsula on the other side of the globe, will be remembered in the human history eternally and become the seeds that will burgeon as the liberation of East Asia towards the freedom. At least I will keep my faith in such way.
I honor USA citizen fight for freedom at anytime and everywhere and hope the all soldiers sleep in the heaven peacefully
Visit twice. The statues are meant to be seen at night, and the wall is meant to be seen in daylight. This is definitely worth taking a walking tour. We learned so much by listening to our tour guide! Just a deep and moving memorial.
What a wonderful memorial. Come check it out if you are in the area
The place is peaceful and heart touching. The struggle those soldiers went through for freedom cannot be justified in any manner hoewer the memorial is good tribute to all those who lost lives in the war!
This is nice war history spot
Summer time I recommend going early in the morning or evening time when the sunsets. Super hot.
Was there with my sister on 18th May 2018. Beautiful there. The side wall with the etching of soldiers life over in Korea. Beautifully done! Was well worth the trip just to see that.
Another of these spooky memorials. During the day normal. But during the night, and if its raining you really get the feeling of what the area must have been like. The ponchos they wore giving away the terrible weather they faced.Ghosts walking in the darkness. How do I salute while typing?
Free admissionMy parents still remembers the statues of Korean Memorial, DC from all of Memorials. They say it is the best of all memorials.I have to agree.I have been to Korean Memorial, in Korea, NJ and in DC. The display of American soldiers walking through the a rice fields in Korea, it does not take much imagination. They already display it very well and very haunting soldiers. Their sacrifices were not in vain. S. Korea is not Communist. Thanks to Joint efforts of South Korea, America & U.N..ROK or Republic of Korea ( S. Korea) government are very appreciative of America intervention, AS a Joint United Nations intervention to prevent Communist take over of S. KOREA, I can tell you that American Servicemen lives losses cannot compare to entire United Nations participation from other Countries. In Korea, in the Korean War international Museum, every single American Service names from each States, killed in action, are displayed. It broke my heart. As a Korean immigrant, i have special place in my heart for Korean Vets. Thanks to America & U.N., South Korea is able to enjoy the Freedom of Independence from Communist N. KOREAN, Soviet Union & China.Because of America intervention, able to defeat Japan during WW II, South Korea surrendered to America. While N. KOREA surrendered to Soviet Union (became Communist later on ) and forced East Germany & N. Korea to be Communist also as the guardians of these Countries.
The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Washington, D.C.s West Potomac Park, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and just south of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. It memorializes those who served in the Korean War. The Korean War Veterans Memorial was confirmed by the U.S. Congress (Public Law 99-572) on April 20, 1986,[2] with design and construction managed by the Korean War Veterans Memorial Advisory Board and the American Battle Monuments Commission. The initial design competition was won in 1986 by a team of four architects from The Pennsylvania State University, but this team withdrew as it became clear that changes would be needed to satisfy the advisory board and reviewing agencies such as the Commission of Fine Arts. A federal court case was filed and lost over the design changes. The eventual design was by Cooper-Lecky Architects who oversaw collaboration between several designers. Former President George H. W. Bush conducted the groundbreaking for the Memorial on June 14, 1992, Flag Day, and thus construction was started. The companies and organizations involved in the construction are listed on the memorial as: the Faith Construction Company, the Emma Kollie Company, the Cold Spring Granite Company, the Tallix Art Foundry and the Baltimore District of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice that ended the war, by President Bill Clinton and Kim Young Sam, President of the Republic of Korea, to the men and women who served during the conflict. Management of the memorial was turned over to the National Park Service, under its National Mall and Memorial Parks group. As with all National Park Service historic areas, the memorial was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places on the day of its dedication.
The Korean War Veterans Memorial is very touching and unique. Not only is this area well kept and preserved but it’s also gives us an understanding of what went on at this war.
Of all the memorials, this one not only surprised me but really caught me off guard. I loved the representation of diversity.
We came here at night. Our tour guide brought us here. Very nice. All of the soldiers appeared to be looking at you while you walked pass them. It was neat to see the engravings into the granite wall behind them. Next time we come here, well try and come during the day to see the difference.
The Korean War Memorial: The Lines on the Faces Speak…Indeed, when I visited the Korean War Memorial in Washington DC, it is the lines on the faces of the sculptured soldier’s that caught my heart. The memorial is located in the West Potomac River, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial. Dedicated in 1995 the Memorial commemorates one of the most ugly battles in War History, the Korean War.There are four concepts of the Memorial you must observe and hopefully take in:1- The Mural Wall made from granite from California depicting images of troops, equipment, tools and other things used in this war.2- Stainless statues, 19 of them represent 14 soldiers from the US Army, three marines, one navy and one from the Air Force. If you take the time to observe the faces, you might see the weariness in the lines across the images.3- The United Nations Wall represents all the nations that contribute troops and medical support during the war.4- The Pool of Remembrance is a pool surrounded by trees. The inscriptions read the names of those killed, wounded and missing in action. As you walk, take the memorial to your heart. The soldier’s looked worn out. The walls are full of images of how horrible war is. At the same time, the sun reflects itself in the pool and the trees moved back and forth pushed by the wind. I walked away touched by Hope. I hope you would too – Smart travels my friends!
Memorial to the young men who died in the Korean War
Salute to america for the 4th of July was awesome
Another great tribute to all those who served during the Korean War. The etchings of people on the wall was an amazing site to see and the statues situated within the greenery was really well done. Know as the Forgotten War, make sure this memorial makes it to your list when visiting!
Unbelievable experience, a must see to experience first hand.
My friend insisted that I see this Memorial. I wasnt so sure what the big deal was because all the memorials are beautiful there. She insisted that we go and arrive just as it was getting dark. I was speechless. Not just a stone monument, but soldiers walking through the marshes in full gear. It was so surreal. I didnt want to say anything, they looked as though they were trying to be quiet, and looked as though they would blink and turn their hollow eyes directly at you if you made a sound.Whoever created this was a genius. The men are just a bit larger than a normal sized man, so your mind almost doesnt know why you feel uneasy being there, but you just are. This is all in front of a highly polished marble memorial with faces and names to add the human element of both sides. This Memorial was the one that will stick in my mind for a long time.
Really enjoyed the visit. Seen it both at night via Big Bus Night Tour and during the day. Very well done. Moving tribute.
Beautiful work and recognition of the ones who served our country.
Freedom is not free. There were a lot of people from all over the world to help democracy in Korea. And also there was political influence by politician while sacrificing their lives to unknown country, South Korea. Right now they are also fight for democracy from dictators and military for this next generation even today as we are fight for something in their life..
This place looks better at night with lighting.
Extremely memorable and moving. One can only imagine the conditions and struggles that American soldiers had to endure during the Korean War.
This is a very striking memorial to commemorate the soldiers who fought in the Korea war. It shows men dressed in combat fatigues wandering through the grass staring out from side to side. It is slightly eerie and brings you to the moment of what it must have been like. On one wall there are facial etchings of people who served. This is a free memorial and not really an entrance of any kind. There are also no bathrooms.
It was an honor for me as a US service member to visit the national Korean war Memorial. It was an honor for me to visit this memorial because my father is a Korean war veteran who serve this country along with many other service members with Honor. As my father is a Korean War Veteran, I have sever in Korea as well. If you’re in the Washington DC area you need to stop at the Korean War Memorial to learn about the history . Bring your families friends veterans service members to this memorial you will Brecciate what the Korean War veterans have done for our country.
Wonderful statues. You can sense the tension of walking through the jungle in enemy territory.
Great respect for these heroes & veterans who have sacrificed their lives for this land during Korean War
This set of sculpture was interesting although I didnt know the story behind it except it must be soldiers advancing during the Korea war.
I think this is a very moving memorial. Memorial weekend is a great time to go see the memorial as well.
An interesting memorial, very well done and worth the visit. Some interesting statuary and a poignant expression of what it was to serve in Korea. If you are up for it, walk around all the monuments around the Mall as well.
Wow. Probably one of the most chilling monuments I’ve seen. The rather eery ghostly figures walking through the under growth.Beautiful.
Amazing memorial, what an honor to visit!
The last time we were there, I dont know if we missed it, or it was being constructed, but this time, we got to see the whole thing. It is absolutely breathtaking. We got chills being there. Very beautiful, and somber. The detail and scale of the statues was just, wow. My grandfather was in Korea, and I feel like this is a fitting monument to their fight over there. Well done. A must see.
Very nice Memorial to All that Served. My father served in a Submarine. Close to other Memorials helped me go. Im not a puppy any longer. I learned things my father had never told me. Still an educational day and memorable. Than You to those that Served. In any conflict, anywhere.
This was a great stop on our trip through Washington dc
The Korean War Memorial us one of my very favorites - even over Vietnam. I could sit there for hours. Not only are the statues very detailed an realistic, the Arbor over the benches is a really different feel from most places you sit on a bench. You are completely covered with greenery and a reflection pool in front of you. Very peaceful. Allows for reflection & remembrance.
This is a beautiful, someone underrated memorial in Washington, D.C. Very well done. A must visit location. It is especially poignant at night.
A beautiful and very thoughtful art work, one of the best war memorials in the US.
My father served in Korea. I have the upmost respect for all that served in any of the Armed Forces.
Beside the Lincoln memorial you can see this memorial . An Awkward atmosphere emerge from those metal soldier statues .. as if they were still walking ..
The attention to detail was amazing! Definite must visit
This place is a great tribute to those that served. The memorial is particularly beautiful at both sunrise and sunset. Walking around the memorial gives you a different angle with each step
Beautiful and serene, like all monuments around it.Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew, and a people they never metFreedom is not freeTwo of my favorite quotes from the place.Theres a small water fountain at the place, please dont throw coins in it, it damages the marble. Inspite of this warning written all around I saw some coins. There are benches around, sit an absorb the lush green peaceful feeling you get over here.
Any memorial dedicated to the fallen is one to visit. This one has a nice shaded walkway and area to sit and reflect. I met one of the Korean Vets here that one of the statues was created after. Very humbling.
Like the Vietnam Wall, this is quite a haunting memorial. I might be slightly biased as my Dad is a Veteran of this war. The statues are over seven feet tall, each representing a different type of soldier and accompanying weapon. There is a map available online or even at the location that can tell you more about the well-planned features of this memorial.
What a powerful memorial that you just kind of stumble upon.
Nice place try to visit during sunset or sunrise and see the beauty of sun light beams between the statuesThe Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Washington, D.C.s West Potomac Park, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and just south of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. It memorializes those who served in the Korean War. Wikipedia
The memorial is beautiful and moving. Each man is uniquely different from one another. I cant to go back and see it night.
Korean war memorial i found very moving. I have seen this 3 times. I get more out of it with a night time visit. Very somber. As opposed to the Vietnam wall with i prefer during the day. There are places for drop off, not lots of parking. I would suggest a 3 or 4 wheeled electric scooter or wheelchair if walking is a problem. easy to navigate but can be a lot of walking.
One of the best attractions you can visit in the city, my family and I were amazed by this attraction.
Visually impactful. Its not the largest or grandest but neither should it but neither do I believe it should be, as it is memorable. The wall has images on it depicting troops that fought in the war. There are 19 statues depicting Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force.
Freedom is not free~~ Thanks
Thank you for sacrifice for Korea peninsula
My grandfathers face is on this beautiful wall. He was honored and humbled to be on this wall. Now that he has passed I think that it is so cool that his picture will be on this wall forever. Thank you to everyone who has served this wonderful country and fallen for us.
Magnificent memorial place.
Nice place
A beautiful monument laid out to honour the soldiers of the Korean War. This is well designed and depicts several soldiers walking through a field. Just a short distance from the Lincoln Memorial.
Very moving memorial. Seeing those soldiers on patrol really hits you.
As a fan of history, I was glad to be here. My country was also represented !
Tastefully done memorial.
Thanks for letting us live in freedom
Have a visit at sunset or at night for a different view.
Very neat to see at night. We were on one of the bus tours. Despite hundreds of other people doing the same, it was still enjoyable.
Remember the Korean war. Know of the history of this war and how it continues today.
It is a real beautiful Monument. You can relate to the soldiers at war and can just imagine the conditions and thoughts they had at that moment.
The 19 stainless steel statues represent the advance party of s 14 Army, 3 Marine, 1 Navy and 1 Air Force members and they represent an ethnic cross section of America. Its something about this memorial tha makes it different. Knowing that in a short period of time more the 5 million troops sacrificed their life. During the Korean war more than 35k Service Members died, more than 8k listed as M.I.A. and more than 100k were wounded during this confict. Was this helpful? Any questions?
I had family members who served. It had more meaning
OUR NATION HONORS HER SONS AND DAUGHTERS WHO ANSWERED THE CALL TO DEFEND A COUNTRY THEY NEVER KNEW AND A PEOPLE THEY NEVER MET 1950 - KOREA - 1953When I read this inscription on the floor at Korean War Veterans Memorial, I knelt and prayed with tears for those families of those countries sent troops to the country they never knew and a people they never met. Only thing I could do was thanking God with all my heart for sacrifices of those sons and daughters. As a refugee from North Korea during the war, I cannot help to express properly my deep, deep gratitudes for those veterans and their families.Because of their sacrifices, I have been alive and could be at the memorial site. It has been possible only through Gods mercy and grace, and their sacrifices.
