Not what I was expecting and a bit disappointed with all the trash and bottles left around the ramparts and cannon emplacements. nice piece of history but deserves more attention...

Excellent example of Civil War fort guarding Washington. Was attacked during the war by forces under jubal Early. No parking lot available, street parking only. Hard to find sometime.

On my way from work, I just parked my car near this facility and checked it out. It turns out to be the site which retains one of the most important events in American Civil war History- where Lincoln was shot by the Confederate sharp shooter. I recommend anyone who loves history to walk and visit the site. It is open and free anytime.

This is an interesting historical site on an urban walking trail. Theres some great urban hiking, cheap eats and international shopping along the way in this culturally diverse neighborhood. Our whole family had a really nice time doing something different in Washington.

Small...you would miss it if you werent paying attention. Really interesting. Looking out over the turrets you get a real sense of the tactical significance of the location. Nice stop and close to the battle cemetery.

This is such a jewel in Washington. The history behind the fort is incredible and the staff is impeccable in both their knowledge and personality. I wish the city would do more to keep the homeless from trashing the place. My last visit a couple years ago saw so much trash in front of the parapets that it was sad. If I hadnt been there for an historical job, I would have spent time filling 5 bags full of garbage. But, if you are a civil war buff or want to experience something outside of the typical Washington DC experience, take some time and spend it at Fort Stevens. You get to see the spot where Abraham Lincoln was nearly killed by a sniper, aside from other cool things. I also recommend you take a quick walk over to the cemetery and check out some of the names and regiments that were there. All about that 6th Corps life.

Peacful and serene, grassy land with a lot of historical content and features. Its an old Civil War fort, that President Abraham Lincoln actually witnessed soldiers in battle and where he was shot at by enemy combatants... This fort was built on the land of a Black woman named Elizabeth Proctor Thomas, who once owned 88 acres in the neighborhood that is still known as Brightwood.

Would have enjoyed it a little more if it hadnt been for the day drinkers hanging out all over the place, broken glass, empty beer cans, and empty dime bags strewn all over the place. Our kid really wanted to run around and roll down the hills but we were afraid of what he might end up rolling over. We stayed for 20 minutes and drove up the road to DeRussy. Not as much too look at but at least it was clean. Fort Stevens is such an important historical site, I wish it were better taken care of.

An important fragment of Washingtons (then huge) Civil War defensive system surrounded by an urban landscape. The site consists of two earthwork wall (and accompanying outside ditch) cut with gun embrasures. Two large iron 30 Pounder Parrott Rifles (cannon) are in place in tow of the embrasures. There is also a powder magazine bunker, although the doors are closed and it cannot be entered. There is a bronze 3D map showing the layout of the entire fort during the Civil War (the existing site representing only a fragment of the original Fort Stephens). Mounted on a stone, there is a bronze has relief plaque showing an event during Confederate General Juble Earlys 1864 raid on Washington. President Lincoln visited the fort to observe the attack and walked the parapet to watch the attackers. The President drew Confederate fire, which struck one of Lincolns military aides. However, Lincoln did not descend until (allegedly) confronted by a young Captain Oliver Wendell Holmes (later a Justice of the Supreme Court) who called the President a damned fool and ordered him off the wall....a command Lincoln (sheepishly?) obeyed.Worth seeing, especially during the infrequent times when Civil War reenactors are present to interpret the site.

This is a small fort in the middle of a DC neighborhood. This place can be easily missed, however since it is part of civil war history, this should be a place to stop and visit, even if only perhaps on the way to something else.

People pay big money to see history like at Fort Stevens Park and true to its DC roots, this park is FREE! Its a small green space in NW DC that saw the only Civil War battle in Washington, DC. Its a fort and you can tell that by the ditch surrounding it. Once you jump over the ditch, youll see several cannons and plaques explaining the battle and why this fort exists. Its also speaks to the woman, a freed slave, who owned the property before it was taken from her by the US government to protect the capital. Fascinating!

This is a very cool Fort! A whole lot of history here. I could almost see President Abraham Lincoln standing up on the rampart. It would have gotten a 5 star if it had a rest room or at least a porta-john.

Another important Civil War site lost to the encroachment of the city. This is a pretty important site, being the only time that the confederates ever attacked Washington. Was expecting at least an exhibit shelter, all that is left here is a reconstructed portion of the fort, a few cannon, and a couple display boards. Lame. The power lines/towers in the background are a real mood killer. Housing developments and stores surround. So sad to see this historic landmark go to waste!

The historic fidelity of this once great earthen fortification has been lost. Ft. Stevens, serves as an interesting example of how urban sprawl can entomb a historic site. Vandals had damaged the interpretive signage and looming cell phone towers dont help either.
