The National Academy of Sciences is an off-the-beaten-path experience just off the National Mall. Self-guided tours are free and available during normal work hours Monday-Friday. Heres why I recommend it:1) Building: Its historic and stunning. Theres a theater with a unique, modern design. The great hall is stunning with beautiful mosaics and a giant Christmas tree during the holidays. The atriums are modernized providing great opportunities to photograph. Theres also a little museum telling the history of the academy and building.2) Statue: Outside, theres a large statue of a sitting Albert Einstein. Just blocks from the Lincoln Memorial, its becoming a favorite hidden gem of D.C.
Few Malaysians scientists have been invited to this Academy building. Feel honoured to have been invited here as a commissioner to the International Commission for Human Germline Genome Editing. A historic building indeed.
The place is free to visit. There are plenty of paintings and interesting things to look at, however, do not presume the abundance of inventions and technology as you would find in an Exploratorium. Its a quiet place with small, snug gardens in the front-- not to forget the Einstein Monument . Typically, you can spend an hour or two here if you look through everything. It has abstract paintings and small scultptures
This is a hidden gem. The nondescript exterior belies the gorgeous interior. Its stunning. Its always empty but is a private building. You only need to provide your ID to the security guard and you can walk around. Takes maybe 20 minutes to see it all but its a great spot right by the Lincoln memorial to get out of the heat or cold.
Nice to be able to visit this impressive building even when conferences are taking place. Best art museum ever, loved the science themed paintings and photographs
This cafeteria is so good. Better quality than the one in my building, but not as much selection. I had fried chicken which I will go back for. Soda cups are bigger than the cafeteria at the Red Cross building
Venerable and storied institution. Einsteins memorial outside, and an amazing building.
Came here to see a play put on by the Shakespeare Theater in collaboration with NSF (cause art makes science education more funner) about Ada Lovelace. Its a beautiful building!!! Worth visiting to see the architecture alone, aaannnddd the exhibits are just as interesting.
I worked there
A place where people put their heads together to solve grand challenges. I found absolutely breathtaking architectural features inside, the cafeteria cozy and the staff so thoughtful and nice. I was there on a visit and was so happy I went.
Amazing Place. I applied for a few jobs and may be coming to DC in the near future.
Attended a workshop recently. I’d forgotten how beautiful this space is.
A fantastic place with boundless amounts of information absolutely a great place to stop
Great meeting venue but wifi in auditorium sucks
Beautiful building. The entry gates and Great Hall are worth a visit. They provide an IPad for a self guided tour.
Had a great review of historical accomplishments by American scientists
Beautiful building and great organization.
A good place to visit if you have time, less crowded. Ornate ceiling. Check out the artistic water fountains.
A unique museum in Washington DC that has been around for about 150 years. Nearest metro station is Foggy Bottom/GW.First time there; a place of unique exhibitionand a big statue of Albert Eistien outside.
Did some work here. The people are nice.
There is so much knowledge on inventors inside this place
It is so beautiful on the inside. There are polished marble columns and gilt and painted cielings.
A super cool museum- and visit a huge sculpture of Albert Einstein out front!
Not my cup of tea, but it was nice. We went in & out.... quickly.
The search for new knowledge is exciting!
The most gorgeous buildings ever with amazing artwork.
A small collection of artwork and information on the Academy in the free museum. Not worth going out of your way for. Nice cheap lunch in the cafe downstairs that is open to visitors.
Home to the National Academy of Sciences since 1924. An architectural gem with intricate interior artwork in the atrium. Other than an appreciation for the architecture there isnt much to see or do other than attend a meeting or presentation (but usually you need to be on a pre-approved list to attend. But dont miss the popular statue of Albert Einstein out front along Constitution Ave.
Beautiful Building. Interesting story.
I havent been to the building, but the naming of their journal proceedings, PNAS, always gives me a chuckle when I happen upon a journal article and say it out loud, well selected. For that alone 5 stars.
Kids had fun and learned alot.
Amazing workshop on Health equity approach to Obesity
Amazing interior space! Along with the National Building Museum (aka, Pension Buildin), one of DCs best kept architectural secrets!
Went there for an event and liked it. Science rules!
Very little to see here for the public. Unless you’re in the business then don’t waste your time. There are no staff to answer questions for visitors.
I went for an event and was blown away by the gallery-quality exhibits.
Beautiful old restored building with nice venues for professional meetings.
Beautiful historical building, but tight security. I was there for a meeting, so Im not sure you can just visit without a reason. Inside there is museum about the history of the science academies in the US. The National Academy of Sciences was established by Abraham Lincoln so they have a very rich history. Great meeting space too.
Some interesting items here, off the typical beaten path of most DC tourist locations... Check the website first. Cafeteria open to public for lunch most weekdays
Beautiful building!
Beautiful building! Staff is helpful. Wonderful venue for a conference.
Crazy neat. Wish I could have spent more time looking at all the neat displays.
Fantastic facility. Wonderful workshop
A true national treasure.
Great experience, and security was super friendly and helpful
Beautiful building thats open to the public. A hidden gem thats well worth a visit if youre interested in science or architecture.
We thought would be very interesting, but no real info or exhibits
Not that much to do here, I dont really enjoy looking at art, but still super cool place to visit for 20 or so minutes. The lobby was really cool.
Beautiful building by President Calvin Coolidge
Good NAS workshop, and the building itself is beautiful. Our meeting room was gorgeous, and quite comfortable.
BeautifulThe cafeteria is a thing of dreams.
NAS family day is super. Parking is an issue.
One of the best Smithsonian buildings, surpassed only by the Natural History Museum. Get there early, there is always a long line.
Beautiful interior. Nice place to see a talk. Decent cafeteria downstairs.
Beautiful building with modern updates. Still a meeting place for the nations top science bodies.
Historical building housing the organization to advise the nation relative to science and technology.
Very nice historic place.
Grand challenges, get em while their hot
Lovely experience; must see!
The National Academy of Science sits humbly across the street from all the so well known monuments and memorial. People have walked so far and been overwhelmed by so many memories it is very easy just to see another building along constitution drive and move on with one’s day. I personally like the art deco period and this building has many attributes of the era, that it caught my glance. With the Albert Einstein Memorial in front, which I had to see, I said to myself, lets go in and see what is happening in the National Academy of Sciences. I am glad I did as I learned of their mission and enjoyed the trappings of the art deco era. The art that was hanging around the ground floor was all pretty modern art, some of which I don’t understand fully, however I enjoy the striking colors and messages. The ceiling is not to be missed in the main lobby. Incredible - see the picture please - I visited the board room, and dreamed of all the brainpower that has graced this room and wonder about the thinkers and their thoughts over the decades. There was a big touch screen with information about all the publications created and their connections to each other, almost too much to understand, but I will be reading some of them for sure. This stop may be a bit intellectual for some. I find it fascinating.
There isnt much to see here, but if youre looking for an inexpensive lunch while your touring the sites around the national mall, the cafeteria in the basement has great food and excellent prices. There is also a popular statue of Einstein in front of the building.
Enchanting gardens
Classy venue for lectures and meetings
Enchanting place. See the gems at the second floor, theyre amazing!
A visit to the National Academy of Science in awe-inspiring.
This is a beautiful building with an amazing staff. I recommend this as a stop to anyone in DC.
