I played this course on 9/13/2020. The setting is beautiful, the course layout is spectacular, and the staff is friendly enough. However, the course was in bad condition. At $80/round, I dont expect bare patches in the fairways and on almost every green. There was also a lot of crab grass growing on the greens and the cart paths were in need of some major TLC. This course has the potential to be a really great spot, but it needs some serious rehab. It definitely wasnt worth the price of the round and the drive out from Raleigh. I really do hope they can turn this course around, but it will be a while before I consider playing there again.
Pro shop and snack bar staff were friendly and helpful. Course features a great layout that is being worked on to make it better than it is now. A great example and experience of a classic Ross design.
Played SPGC this past Friday and needless to say it is in dire need of some serious TLC! I loved the layout but the course itself was not in great shape. The fairways were decent but the greens looked rough. They were also incredibly slow and beat to death. The cart paths were absolutely dreadful! There were lots of washouts and places in need of some serious drainage mediation. I believe I heard it was recently purchased by some local investors so I hope they have big plans for the course. I will definitely give it another shot down the road but not before some serious improvements are made. On the bright side the staff was fantastic. Everyone was super nice and friendly which is why it gets two stars this time. It could be an awesome course so I really hope the new owners will put the $ into it.
Excellent Ross course in great condition. Well worth $80 green fee.We completed the first 10 holes in 2 hours 10 minutes and stopped for drinks etc. We were asked by a very grumpy ranger to pick up the pace. We were on a new course and windy tricky conditions. The reason I rate 4 versus 5.
This is a great course, but it is not a great course right now. The greens were really beat up. There is no way this course is worth $80 right now. Fairways had a lot of bare spots too. There are better options for the price in the area right now. I live in this area and have played this course many times and it is usually my go to course for price and quality for people out of town. I was very disappointed to take my friends here this weekend. It looked like a really beat up old muni the city had given no money to.
If you get a chance, you must golf here. A beautiful course and in great condition. Loved it
Ignore the bad comments! This place is amazing, one of the more beautiful courses in THE WORLD. The layout is spectacular, my favorite course in North Carolina
Nice greens and great layout. The cart paths need a lot of work. Wish the workers were more helpful to first timers. No explanation of course or layout. Also the hot dogs at the turn are way over priced. $6 for a hotdog and bag of chips with no option of no chips. Only takes cash.
Donald Ross course with bent grass greens. Best value in NC
A Donald Ross gem. Beautiful layout. Course was recently bought by the people that own Mid-Pines and Pine Needles. Cant wait to see how this course turns out after renovation. The layout of this place has the potential to be right up there with Mid-Pines. Will definitely be back.
Fun place for round on Donald Ross layout
Good course. Fairways were nice for winter. Pace was a little slow but typical for an afternoon round. Overall though we had fun. Layout wasnt too challenging but was long enough to make up for it. Give it a shot I know we will be back.
Great layout and greens. Some washed out areas need some work.
Great value great golf course
Great course but oh man those cart paths need work
I was their working. What a beautiful course with a great staff.
Golf course is in really great shape. Greens are fast. Pro shop staff is not that friendly. But what an amazing layout. A Donald Ross gem.
Really fun course with a classic layout. Greens and fairways were is great shape. A lot more laid back then other courses in the area
You can tell this track has good bones but you can also tell that the owners have pretty much said keep the fairways and greens as good as you can, try to keep the tee boxes up as best you can, beyond that, dont spend a dime. All clubhouse facilities, etc are very dated and dilapidated. Halfway house was open only until morning golfers came through one time.On a recent 90 degree day, only one cooler on the course had any water in it.This should be a $25 round.
This is actually a pretty nice course. However, it is extremely overpriced compared to other courses in the area. Especially after they aerated the greens...didnt lower the price at all. Probably wont play there again unless a special event or have a pass. Lots of courses just as good or better that are equal price or cheaper.
Not a super challenging course and to be honest not a lot of memorable holes, but for this time of year it was in Pretty good shape. The greens had a nice speed and were in good shape. No noticeable issues in the fairway. Some places had dirt trails instead of cart path. We had 2 eagles and 4 birdies or so between our group on a day in the low 50* and a bit misty, so not very challenging.
Very friendly staff, course is well maintained but the facilities are dated
Fantastic shape, greens roll true and are quick.
Nice track...
What a gem....!!! Our first course in our golf package and it was a good start.. Staff was friendly and the course was in good shape. Greens were in very good shape and greens were somewhat fast. Watch out for sloped fairways and hit to the high side. Old classic club house with a good kitchen. Local tap beer was delicious and the Ruben sandwich was yummy. A must play....
Drove from raleigh to play. Course needs alot of attemtion. Fairways and greens in average condition. Too many weeds everywhere. Sadly wont be back.
Played 18 on a recent Sunday. Warmed up at the range, short game area and practice green. Range was lacking grass. It was hard to find a decent lie. Short game area was nice as was the putting green. Course layout is interesting. Greens were in good shape. The course needs work around the edges. Cart paths are a shambles and it just feels unkempt for the majority of tee box areas and in general. For the rate being charged, it seems they could put more into it. A few fine touches could really help this course. Pretty much a mixed bag as far as I can see.
Felicia Lee is the new clubhouse manager over food and beverage...she is making some big changes and doing things in new ways that are amazing for new attraction so nice so smart so organized...beautiful lady to look at great listener for some of you men out there that like to stop in and conversate with a drink...or you moms out there with pool membership...yes shes doing things for you as well and the kiddos...definitely need to stop in and check out the new changes that cater to everyones needs...hope to see more people out so we can continue a beverage cart as well with malted beverages like Blue motorcycles and Bahama Mamas for our lady golfers...Big things are coming for Southern Pines Golf Club...she will be starting on social media so keep a good look out for that too....come out and have a blast with our beautiful southern pines girls.....Im adding to this post...felicia is not the manager there anymore but someone who has been there a long time who is such an amazing person is a man name Reggie and he does the carts such a nice gentleman always with incredible advice in life great friend great person to talk to and if you need anything or have questions thats who I would ask....
Having s great round of golf with 1969 classmates Sandra McNeill and Rick McDonald!
Very good course to play on. It has very generous fairways. The greens were rolling very good when we played. I have no negatives to say for the course at all. All of the people I spoke to who were associated with the course were very nice.
Great walking course! Greens are fantastic
Nice course, interesting holes designed by Donald Ross. Good practice putting green, and driving range. I played the day after a windy day and greens had a lot of debris.
Elks lodge and great Donald Ross course!
Seems like a really nice course, and the service at the clubhouse was very cordial. Good times practicing to play Pinehurst.
Nice course and friendly staff
Awesome little course!!!one guy in 8 today shot 67!!! We will be back!!
Tee boxes, fairways and greens are all perfect. The only thing that can use work is the tree areas and the cart path. Enjoyed the course and would defintley return
Southern Pines Golf Club, rated 3-1/2 stars: Amongst Donald Rosss huge legacy in the Pinehurst area are two wonderful golf courses that could in most respects be described as identical twins. However, whereas the Mid Pines Golf Club has benefited from top-quality grooming and immaculate green-keeping, the Southern Pines layout has a more rugged, slightly forgotten look about it.Southern Pines is an essential part of the Donald Ross trail, a lovely old course, very enjoyable to visit and play, but a course where you wish the presentation could be improved.
Wonderful lunch atmosphere.Great service, delicious food, friendly staff.Cant wait until it warms up to play a round of golf.
Great layout on a fine piece of property with all the hills you need to keep the game interesting. No two holes are alike, but most give you something to think about without resorting to blind shots or gimmickry. This is a shorter course that still lets you take advantage by hitting driver on most tees, but can quickly get its revenge on and around the greens, especially on the back nine. Conditions were solid and it does seem like they have worked hard to maintain those greens. Personally, my back nine got pretty slow for an afternoon round.Sorry but had to edit this 5-star review because I returned and had horrible service. Having played here before and knowing they had a range, I though it would be a convenient place to get some practice in. Yet the second I walked in the shop, the man glared and gave me the confrontational Can I HELP YOU. I asked how much range balls cost, and he replied Four dollars, but the RANGE is ONLY for MEMBERS or people PLAYING the COURSE. Then as I was putting my money back in my wallet, turning and leaving, he went ahead and insulted me on my way out the door. Could not believe this guy and wound up practicing and golfing at much more welcoming courses. Website doesnt mention the range is off-limits so I dont get why the disrespect and attitude had to be launched at me for making the mistake to assume they would appreciate my business.
Classic Donald Ross design.well maintained. Reasonable fees. Longest 6100 yds. Excellent greens.
Santa was wonderful with all the children and passed out stockings! it was a lovely event, thank you so much to the southern pines elk club.
This layout is full of potential but the current course condition is really poor for the area. The tees are lumpy with bermuda and way too long. The landing areas of the fairways are generally pretty good, but the lesser used areas of the fairways are, in some cases, atrocious. The greens are painfully slow and covered in unprepared ball marks. Many of them are diseased as well. I dont know anything about the ownership, but it seems to be a track that it in severe financial distress. Its a shame and I hope they get it back in shape soon.
Good course, greens are a little beat up.
Love the course and the location is very convenient, the rating is strictly based on the employees and their attitudes. The last 2 times I have played the course Ive been graced with the presence of 2 older employees and their lack of concern for the courses guest. All Im saying is when I pay $80 a round I would like to not feel like Im a burden.
Greens always good. This day they had overseeded the fairways so carts were not allowed on them. Rough is in bad condition, old erosion never filled in. No restaurant this week
Nice place, gonna get more business from me in the future. Very relaxing environment.
Humbling greens, great layout, poor Cart paths, needs some TLC
One of the original courses in the Sandhills. Classic. Needs some upgrades needed in the clubhouse, but still a solid course.
Great layout with lots of elevation changes... Greens were okay, fairways were nice, but the edges and rough were not in good shape or well maintained.
Some of the old girls polish is still there. I had 2 chip ins, so there was that.
Nice course with a friendly staff. One of our favorite courses.
Need me older course. Great staff
The Crenshaw - L 91 bent grass greens are the best in the Pinehurst area. 1906 Donald Ross built, means the second shot and the green side experience will test all facets of your game. Jason Kokrak was our last champion before joining the tour. As Ross meant it, we accommodate everyone from 4100 to 6800. The courtesy from the parking lot to your end of the round cocktail experience, rivals anything in the sandhills.
Terrific layout by Donald Ross that is not maintained as well as it should be.
A nice easy paced course, enjoy the golf and the spectacular scenery.
Fun course with lots of elevation changes. The halfway house is located after #10.
Good shape for all the bad weather theyve had
Classic Donald Ross Design Southern pines opened with 9-Holes in 1906, then expaned to 18 holes between 1910-1912.Legendary golf course architect Donald Ross carved 18 of perhaps the most rewarding golf holes in the Sandhills region. A true shotmaker’s golf course, Ross gives players options. At 6300 yards, Southern Pines does not measure up to today’s length of courses, but it makes up for it through a variety of shots from the tee and even more challenges into the greens. The result continues to prove the course’s notoriety as the most entertaining 18 holes of golf in the area. A throwback to days gone by, where bump and run shots were the norm and tee shots demanded precision over length. One trip around this Ross gem will leave you wanting more, not just at that moment, but rather each every time you tee it up. This is how golf should be played. The memories are more vivid and will last a lifetime.
Course in good shape.
Course is in great shape. Played most of the courses in Southern Pines and this ranks in the top group.
Great layout
Great place to play golf
Great course, great condition.
Was there for my nephews cross country meet. The environment was very clean
Family gatherings are always superb!!!!
Fun, great course
Too hard
A little disappointed with the course, I was hoping this Donald Ross course would be a gem of the likes of Mid Pines and Pine Needles but the design and layout dies not compare.
Best course in Southern Pines!
Love it
Absolutely great time
Beautiful Place just Costly
Beautiful
Another must play course.
The course is in great shape
Same old, same old.
Classic Donald Ross course
Nice pleasant course !
