This place is an amazing piece of history. If you have even a passing interest in engineering then this museum is a must see! The volunteers are very informative and can answer just about any question you can come up with. I had no idea that an old steam powered water processing plat could be so fascinating. If youre ever in the area, treat yourself to this little gem... you deserve it!
We really enjoyed the tour and got to review a lot about the physics or movement. We just studied movement of rollercoasters and pumping water to a city has a lot of the same principles. The old tools and equipment was wonderful to see, too.
McNeil Street Pumping Station houses the Shreveport Water Works Museum. Its worth a visit. Museum is free. They have tours but you can walk through at your own pace. Open in 1887 as Shreveports first water plant. Contains a machine shop, boiler room, pump room, filter room and some exhibits outside.
A fun little stop will take you about an hour its much better with a tour guide.
This place is worth the visit! Lots of history and a lot to see and discover. The gentleman there gave us a very good tour and answered all of our questions. History is not boring for this experience. Also have a railroad museum on property. See it!
A great place to see amazing old industrial technology. And its even free.
This place is fascinating. Its got all the big machines, tanks, even the tool shop right in place exactly as it all was years ago. You can walk up and touch things, turn on the pump to see how it worked, and get a strong feel for what it was all like back in the day. And its free. Well worth taking out the time in the middle of the day for a visit, along with the railroad museum on the same property.
Not bad for a small museum. Some interesting things on the grounds of the museum. It is definitely worth a stop if you need something to do while in Shreveport.
An absolute treat of looking into the past
This is an old place, but full of history. Our tour guide was really informative, and really great with the kids.
A must see. Free museum that shows the history of water in Shreveport. Great for people/kids to learn how water is processed and delivered to your tap from the source.
The water works is full of really cool old water pumps and a history of water in the city of Shreveport. There are some interactive parts so you can see how the water is treated and delivered to taps. My kids really enjoyed seeing all the big machines!
One of the oldest waterworks buildings. Everything here is original.#beafanofsb
This is a hidden gem of Shreveport! Super cool to see the old machines and the tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and informative. Also be sure to stop inside the railroad museum.
Really neat place. Loved the guided tour. Wish I had asked more questions
Very interesting place. We were thankful that it had been saved for history. A well informed docent provided quite a bit of information. The equipment is over100 years old, not being used now that they switched from steam to electric in 1980. We learned quite a bit about water treatment. As a past volunteer fireman, my husband enjoyed learning the origin of the word fireplug. Youll have to visit to see what it is. .
Very historic. I guess Im a history lover because places like this with so much history makes me happy. They really did shut this station down and leave it almost like a ghost town but the people who work there have done a great job at making it a wonderful interesting place.
Past well preserve with an excellent tour guide with a great sense of humor.
While not longer an operating water works facility, the City of Shreveport has done a fabulous job of preserving their historic plant with much of the original equipment remaining in place. Youre bound to be the only visitor if you drop by and you can count on the outgoing and most knowledge volunteer, Kevin, to lead you around and provide a comprehensive history of the facility. Youll get to see the original boilers, the pumps that fed the water into the downtown neighborhood, the filtration tanks and outdoor holding tanks. This doesnt require a lot of time to visit (45 minutes is enough) and its located relatively close to central Shreveport.
Very, very interesting. Great tour, lots of interesting facts and history.
We were there for the Battle of the Gourmet Food trucks. Really good food. The grill cheese sandwich was awesome, made by May the Cheese be with you.
This is a national landmark and a piece of civil engineering history that the public would normally not have access to. On a Sunday afternoon I had the place to myself and enjoyed every minute of it. The mechanics, architecture, and history of water treatment is all very interesting. I would definitely go back.
Great place to take the kids for free!! It was so educational and fun! Amazing to see how the water used to be cleaned.. the last known steam powered water system in the usa!
Spent part of an afternoon here and enjoyed it. Staff was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Did not have high expectations. They were greatly exceeded. The train museum onsite left some to he desired, but the Water Works museum made up for it.
We ask for a and received a tour. If you love history, this is a great place to go. This place is full of local history. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable of how water is piped into the treatment plant them sent out to the city. Its easy to see how dedicated the volunteers are too this museum. It runs on donations only.
A hidden gem if youre interested in history. Sorry I dont remember the name of our tour guide, as he knew a lot about the history of the technology and of Shreveport and took his time showing us everything and answering any questions we had. The little railroad museum next door is pretty cool, too.
This museum caught me by surprise. You just dont expect much from the first look. However, the amount of history you will see here is quite amazing.Make sure you get the guided tour! You will hear bunch of cool stories about the plant.
Worth the trip to it if youre in Shreveport.
The Waterworks Museum is an exciting surprise in the most pleasant and interesting of ways. Those with an active imagination cannot help but be in awe in a fascinated, imagined macabre, creepy pasta, Resident Evil kind of way. I say that as the highest of compliments. Recommend especially for teens, and even for normies. We went to the Railroad Museum next door afterwards, and found both museums interesting and enjoyable. Admission is free to both, with optional donation boxes urgently available.
Very interesting self-guide style tour. Both the train and water works museum had interesting artifacts and educational items. If you like getting close to and seeing how the equipment use to work, you have to visit. No admittance fee but strongly suggest donations.
Great tour guide interacted with the children and adults alike. Really neat to see the original equipment and building.
Very interesting and informative. Excellently preserved machinery and building. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The train museum was a bit of a let down. Was expecting actual cars and engines. The collections was mostly interesting artifacts from Texas & Pacific rail roads.
Neat little museum.
Although small, it has lots of interesting things. Amazing to see that they were so far ahead of their times.
I was totally surprised. The outside does not look like much, but inside is a wealth of historic steam powered machinery. All of it was left just as it was when taken out of service. The staff was very knowledgeable about the history and use of each piece. There were boilers, steam engines, pumps, etc. All are very large. If you like historic machines, you will like this place.
Ok so I tried to post this earlier and my phone fritzed on me. This was the last place my wife and I went on our anniversary and it was very unique and very pleasant. If you have time in Shreveport take the time to come out to this free museum. This is a great place to learn and discover about our past as a country. What did those before us do? What did they build? Although this is just for this region you can see what one would have to do survive and care for what was around them. It is near the current water works and it just shows part of a by gone era that we still need to learn from. The staff was great and I look forward to coming back.
History, learning they are doing things a lot easier than in past
This place was so cool. So much history and information. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. There is also a really cool train museum/room next to here.
This place is great! And educating. No admission ut the house do accept donations since the people who work there are volunteers
“Great Free Guided Tour!”You do not have to be an engineer to enjoy this stop. However, I heartily recommend you ring the bell if the Tour guide is not in the welcome area. Although I believe a self-guided tour is available, the guy made the trip come alive, providing many fascinating facts and responding to numerous questions.
Super cool! Kevin gave our family a detailed tour and even let the kids blow the steam whistle at the end. Fantastic hidden treasure in Shreveport!!
Great Learning Experience! Guide Kevin was Awesome!!! Great for kids!!!
A very interesting background to this place. Its free to go to and you can learn a lot about how the water system in cities works.
Awesome ngo
My favorite place in Shreveport. Dont miss this place and take a guided tour!
Great place to learn about the water in Shreveport
Incredible collection of history to show us all that water is and has been a necessary commodity for all of us.
Lots of local history. Very interesting.
Wonderful place to visit!
This is a hidden gem of Shreveport! Super cool historical site on one of the first water treatment plants in the United States!
The tour guide made this tour memorable. The gentleman was very passionate about his job.
It was extremely interesting and it was interactive so there were things that you could actually do there great demonstrations
Great tour. Knowledgeable guides! Free yet priceless! Please consider donating!
What a JOY to explore on a free day in Shreveport! This artifact of engineering is marvelously maintained and described. Must see in Shreveport.
The volunteer guide was just sweet as could be. He knew so much and was able to teach us a tremendous amount.
Free museum on the history of Shreveports water purification system. Its way cooler than it sounds- just go and you wont regret it.
Very friendly and knowledgeable! I really enjoyed checking out the history of the water treatment plant.
We had a tour guide and he explained it very well. He even had the kids answering, guessing and interacting.
Its great to see a (former) working civil engineering structure turned into a museum, with all the plant intact!
Uniquely well-preserved, and surprisingly interesting. It wont take more than an hour or so to see everything; well worth the time if you happen to be in the area and looking for something to do!
Well worth your time
Engineers, plan for a 3-hour stay! Intensely mechanical & original. Free but I encourage all to donate.
Top tour guide, he just came out of his office and gave us a tour. Very good place to spend if you have an hour or bit more and pass by. Also, free entrace!
Giant steam powered water pumps!
Superb! The preservation society did a great job of showing the workings of a 100 year old water plant. Actually had some working exhibits. Make sure to get a guided tour with Kevin. He makes the experience an educationa hiddenl gem.
I have always wanted to explore this place, not disappointed!!
Excellent displays of earlier water works operation and equipment.
