What a gem! The walkable acres are beautiful and the facilities and grounds well kept. Museum is interesting and small enough for a quick visit (due to CoVid concerns). Staff are knowledgeable, personable and welcoming to anyone and everyone. Staff wear masks and socially distance as much as possible. POC can feel comfortable visiting here. Great place for kids to have an up close and personal educational experience that is loads of fun too!
Ive lived in Savannah for over 10 years and never heard about this place until I heard an interview on GPB. And Im so sad Ive never been before. It was amazing. It was so beautiful and peaceful. The trails are well-maintained and easy to walk. Some of them walk along running water and some cut through the woods and go past the river. There are restrooms at the entrance as well. There is a small fee and its worth it.For those going with kids or babies, I would recommend bringing a baby carrier and not a stroller just because of the roots. Also, make sure you bring bug spray!
There are quite a few interesting items scattered about, but its pretty informal. It should be noted that the museum is outdoors. There are lots of bald cyprus knees everywhere begging to be painted with tiny elf doors. This could be a truly magnificent elven forest with a little artistic touch. Calling all tiny artists.
I would first like to point out that I enjoyed the historical relevance of the park. This was my first time to the park as I am new to the area. Apon entering there is a sign that shows admission prices. So we walked into the park to find a ticket stand, which is non-existant. After enjoying the park, I was stopped by an employee. She said I never paid to get in. I explained my confusion, apologized and paid my due. She proceeded to tell me that I am a bad example to my kids for not paying upfront and a disappointment to the military. I again apologized for my confusion and asked her not to bring my kids into our discussion. She told me to leave the park. I agreed that it was probably for the best. My wife and kids get to our car and I allow my kids to sit and eat our picnic sandwiches. After a few minutes, the woman returns to tell me I am purposefully antagonizing her by still being there. I protested by telling her I was just letting my kids eat. The woman again told my wife and I that we were bad parents. Which set my wife off. As we were trying to leave, the woman stood behind our car to try and get a picture of our license plate. She threatened to call the police, which I assured her wasnt necessary as were were trying to leave. The woman then walked to the other side of the parking lot to get infront of my car. Once she moved we left the part as she yelled the cops were going to get us.Its a shame. I did enjoy the park. Only to have our family day out ruined by a horrid employee. We will not be returning.
Beautiful escape into the forest. Trails/boardwalks were beautiful and easy to follow out and back. Only saw a couple people on the trail. Was hoping to see a few more birds/animals but too hot and humid. The prices have increased to $5 for adults which seemed a lil high given the museum was not easily identifiable and was not open at the time. Otherwise enjoyable!
Not worth $5 for a 10 minute walk. They failed to tell us everything was flooded. If they at least told us, I would have definitely come back a different day and brought more people. Because of this, none of us will be returning.
My wife and I were on our way to Florida and this small park was on my list of canal parks to visit. It is located about 2 miles from I-95, and very easy to get to. There is a small fee ($3) to enter the parklands, and some signs that say you are being watched so you better pay up. There is a bath room! There looks to be a little museum, but it wasnt open. The park consists of trails that follow the route of the canal past locks 5 and 6 to the river. It is a short walk of about a half mile to the Ogeechee River. There are a few trail options so you can walk in along the old canal and then walk out over the swampy area. There are some very nice boardwalk and bridges to keep your feet dry all the while. A nice bonus are the labels on many of the plants and trees, so you can get a bit of nature education while you are walking along. It was a great place to stop and stretch your legs. Well worth the $3 fee to get in. It has to be very expensive to maintain all those bridges and walks.
Found this little gem through my Alltrails app. Fun little hike out and back. Beautiful scenery for us Ohio people not used to the southern plants, etc. Didnt notice the little yellow ribbons marking the official end the trail so we walked about another mile out and then had to turn around. Got a little confused there for awhile trying to figure out the trail back as there were no good trail markers. Finally used alltrails map to get back on track. Beautiful area!
Beautiful, but the lack of actual information was abysmal. No maps, no mile markers, just trail names.
Friendly staff, well kept trails, and a rich history.
Was going to check it out but seen this park had an entry fee. Most parks are free so we skipped it.
Great place to hike. Loved it.
This place is amazing.... Everybody should know about it...grate way to spend the day
Very beautiful breath taking landscape
Great place to go on a short hike with your partner and enjoy the outdoors!
Loved this and worth the drive to check it out
Good walk along the trail. The museum is in rough shape, but had a few cool pieces in it
Fun trails to walk. Kid friendly. River access. Benches for resting.
Beautiful place. Well maintained. Great place for a nice scenic relaxing walk.
Super cool place to go explore and learn about history. Beautiful scenery and it’s very secluded on most days. Great for runs!
Pretty fun. Trail is poorly maintained and really short. Also, they ask for like 5 dollars a person which is ridiculous considering they don’t have any kind of like annual pass sort of deal.
Great trails for easy hiking. Connie is super helpful
Great walking location. Surprised the parking lot did fill up on a Sunday. Great learning location, if you pay attention. I was shocked to see how many people are cheapskates and skipped the donation box. Really, its like a dollar. Recommend you go during cooler weather or have bug spray. Extremely well manicured trails.
Interesting piece of history. It was near 100 degrees with high humidity but an interesting walk. Had to work around a couple of downed trees across the trail but overall a good walk.
Great scenery, but the Museum wasnt even open. Not a whole lot of wildlife.
Its okay. Short trails. It is very quiet which is really nice. Adults - $5 and Kids $3 which is pretty pricey for a car load of people. It is very low laying so frequently floods during high tide
Its one of the most special areas that I have been to in all of Georgia. History, archeology, beauty, hiking, animal and kid friendly, a museum..help support this wonderful place.
This is an amazing park and museum. There is so much history all over the grounds. Great trails for hiking and beautiful scenery. Definitely plan to visit, great for the family. Dog friendly, too.
Beautiful, nice walk and dog friendly
Great little hidden gem just outside of Savannah. I went with my wife and two kids (5&2) on a Saturday just to get everybody out of the house. Parking is easy, trails are well marked although a little muddy when we went, 5 bucks for a family to get out of the house for the day is well worth it.
Historic area that has several trails to walk with your pets (leash required). Only few dollars for a day or can join for a year membership at a great price.
This was a nice day get away! Just see a untouched forest and every time we turned around there was something exciting to see, whether it be natures artwork of trees or the butterflies and dragonflies.
Peaceful natural place to enjoy a beautiful day
Festival it was good but it was cold.
Beautiful nature walk. Benchs and gazebo resting spots along the way. Extremely clean restrooms.
The Haunted Swamp at Halloween was great! Bring a flashlight and tennis shoes. Watch your step and your little ones because there are some dangerous places to navigate in the dark. It was definitely scary!
A neat little hiking park with some historical significance to the area. None of the trails are too long dor children but I would recommend bug spray and bottled water.
Such a delightful place. Get the $25 membership so you can go whenever you like. Beautiful hiking. Bring your dog on leash.
Had a great walk in the woods with the grandkids and got to see/share some history!
First time going for a change of scenery n to get some exercise and fresh air. That place has lots of walking tails. Also be careful cuz if its high tide the water covers the trails and that causes it too flood. Plus be careful of your surroundings of the water moccasins n different bugs plus the tree stump roots growing out the ground cuz theres plenty.
I spent about an hour checking this place out. I only covered a fraction.nice trails and a easy walk.
A quiet walk through the forest, along the canal and the river. The staff are enthusiastic and full of information about the area and its history. There are some markers outside, a small museum, some picnic tables, and bathrooms. And wonderful place for a nature walk and very family friendly!
Very interesting history. Staff very knowledgeable and helpful
SO PRETTY!!! Would definitely look into taking professional pics here.
Fascinating history. Fun hike. Lots of mosquitoes. Take the bug spray.
Very special place especially when you know the history and so close to home
Take canoe tour.
Really great trip back in time.
Great nature walk, bring bug spray!
Enjoyed this event! Cant wait to come back during the day and get some pictures!
Interesting little museum. Nice video of the canals history. Very pleasant trail and walk along the canal to the Ogeechee River. Inexpensive too.
One of our favorite Savannah trails.
Nice place to get out and stretch your legs
Excellent historical and natural environment
I would give this a 5 star rating because of the historical value however the boardwalk is in much need of repair and downright dangerous to walk on and theres a lot of trash in the canal
Great little walk in an area that lacks good walking trails..
Awesome place to go to, lovely trails!
Cool place! Finally got around to taking the wife out there. Glad i did because its a very peaceful place. The trail goes to the river so bring you pole and some crickets.Horse Flys will torment you they did us anyway.
This is a great place to take a hike in the woods. Beautiful scenery and very peaceful. It is not however, a good place to ride a bike. I was thinking of Rails to Trains along the B&O. Not so much. I will be back for a hike. Looks like a nice camp ground next door.
Historically significant for moving goods before the railroads were established. The lock has been preserved and brought onto the grounds for viewing.
This is a nice walk just to relax and think.
Beautiful setting and trails
Such a beautiful place to visit and experience. I cant wait to go back!
Great for family outings
A true hidden gem.
Great place for a hike with some interesting history.
Great trails 10 out of 10.
Pretty neat October Halloween creep walk
Great place for a nature walk and to spend time taking things slow.
Beautiful back waters
Great facility for Scout Gatherings
Very nice place definitely recommended
I know the place is primarily maintained as a cultural resource, but I am amazed at how well they keep up the natural resources. I am a botanist and used to take my classes there because the plant diversity is so high. I also have led trips for the Georgia Botanical Society there in years past. I visited the place and hiked the trails in the 1st week in Jan 2015. Of all the times I have been, I think the trails and signage were in the best shape I have seen in some time. I was very favorably impressed. Having worked for the FL Park Service, I know how difficult and costly maintenance is. I only saw one plant sign that did not have the correct species on it, and most folks would never know the difference as that determination can be difficult especially in winter.
Beautiful place to take a long quiet walk.
I enjoyed the nature trails leading to the Ogeeche river, lots of birds and native plants
Its great for family hiking, there a lot to see and explored. Over all, beautiful and amazing place, full of history.
Place of significance for Af-Am history, nice view of Ogeechee River, well maintained trails, quaint museum and clean restroom.
Haunted trail was fun
Nice nature walk, quiet and not crowded.
A great small museum which shows how the canal was built.
A relaxing walk that has its rewards.
Great to see them doing improvements on this place.
Beautiful place to go for a walk.
Great time
Nicely shaded
Low tide means no water at all! Otherwise, paradise...
Floods at high tide.
Beautiful walk
Great trails
This appears unmanned and the iron ranger is broken in such a way that youd be silly to put money in it. It also appears much of the park is closed due to high water.
Cool place
