Came here for an easy trail run and for that, it was perfect. Solid, wide path with not too much elevation but enough to make it tough. Not great for a hike though as theres not much to see and very little shade.

Beautiful sprawling mountain landscape with a mix of trails both improved and unimproved. Plenty of parking at the trailhead. No water or bathrooms. Dog friendly.

Great Natural Preserve so close to town! Lots of little trails beyond the dirt roads make it fun to explore and get some good exercise. Also spectacular views at Sunrise and sunset.

Grass is low this time of year so easier to traverse trails and take in 360 degree views!

When I moved here a year ago I found this place on accident on my bicycle via the bridge to nowhere. Which is actually pretty cool....not sure why they would build a bridge that dead ends. The hike itself is nothing special, its pretty moderate...unless you want to walk the entire preserve than that would be intense. Nice and quiet though and after all the rains lots of flowers. No bikes or dogs allowed which is cool for the snakes and bunnies and whatnot that live there. After these rains it would be a good place to go herpin for snakes and lizards. Here are the directions if you want to come in from the direction instead of the normal way.San Marcos Foothills Preserve is located at 1083 Via Gaitero, Santa Barbara CA 93105.From Highway 101, take Highway 154 San Marcos Pass. Exit at Cathedral Oaks Rd and turn left. Turn right on Via Chaparral. After half a block, on your right you see a bridge, the Bridge to Nowhere. Cross it- it goes over Highway 154. Then turn left and park along the road.

Went in back side. Nice and quiet. But largely non-native regrowth on old fire Road. Somewhat overgrown. Creek had destroyed small bridge and led to a somewhat challenging crossing. Crossing means that it would not be a good route and for individuals that would have difficulty scrambling up small slope. We did not make it far into the center of the reserve, however, from what I saw it looked like it could have very beautiful views and a nice grassy hillside uphill hike.

Very pleasant hike with a couple of steep hills. Be careful not to be there after sunset since there is a large pack of coyotes that love there. You can start to hear them yip if you are there during sunset!

Beautiful place. Sometimes too many visitors but often deserted or simply a person or two and their dog.

Hidden gem, so many open trails and great views. Not officially off leash for dogs but if your dog is friendly usually not an issue. The main trail is to the right, there are other trails to the left that go to the avacado orchards (private property) but shorter hike

Nice open space park/preserve with a well marked trail. Trail can be strenuous at times as there a few hills. There is plenty of wildlife to view throughout the preserve. There is no infrastructure for picnics and no bathrooms.

Bikes and horses are a small percent of all users so they were both banned??? Brilliant leadership by our county Community Services officials! That should mean that either would have little impact. The study even sites how bikes, horses, peds, and yes, even dogs successfully use other trails together. Ignorant government officials, as usual. Oh, and bike riders dont leave little plastic bags of poo along the trail, either.

Great open space hidden between Santa Barbara and Goleta, lots of awesome restoration work going on out there with Channel Islands Restoration and if you can get out there on one of their projects or plant walks, itll help you appreciate the space so much more.
