A very good photo collections and some artifacts dating back 100 to 150 years of Maritime history. The tools we use to navigate the ocean could very well be much different. Yet human comradeship and animal companionship remain the same from the photos displayed.
The museum is currently under renovation and doesnt have much of a collection, but the building itself is what is so interesting. It was a WPA project, originally to be a public bath house, and has beautiful art deco murals painted all over the building. The rangers who work here were incredibly friendly and informative. Looking forward to coming back when the renovation is done.
A very nice little museum. Well done and has a lot of history.
They have renovations still going on, so very little is on display. They do have a bunch of ships you can visit though (you need to pay separately for those, but its free on some days) and those trully are interesting. They even have a few guided tours with some interesting stories about the ships, so make sure to join if they are happening during your visit
Small little beach-side museum that offers some interesting information and artifacts from the Wharf. Theres not a lot to see here, but admission is free, so if you are in the area and have a few minutes to kill, its a good place to stop.
Interesting museum with lots of cool exhibits and historical information. I was very impressed by the quality of the exhibits and the architecture of this musuem, and the nice view. I highly recommend it!
The museum is a Wonderful destination for Special Events! Location location location.Unique, large, space in a wonderful area. The Water views are breathtaking. Sunset is the best from the deck. Do not miss.
A grand place for a museum and within such an uniquely designed building near the water!! Lots to see and do within, and no entrance fee (as of a few years ago). While you are moving through the different exhibits and model vessels, please dont forget to admire the fabulous artwork on the ceilings, the walls, and in some places, even the floors!!! Also its a great view looking out past the municipal (curved) pier and the historic Hyde Street pier toward Alcatraz!
Nice little museum with free entry (September 2019) Great view of the beach on the top floor and nice restroom facilities.
The Burton Building, built in 1939 as part of the New Deal, houses the Maritime Museum. There’s not a lot of exhibits but it’s free and a beautiful place to stroll. Photo taken from the Rowing Club.
Really interesting if you’re into ships and everything maritime. You can also sit outside of the museum on the stone steps and just watch the bay.
Yes, there’s the obvious old boats to check out, which is worth doing. However, the hidden gem is the monthly sea chantey singalong. So much fun!
Really cool place to see artifacts for free. The models of ships are incredibly intricate and quite large. There are also some artifacts such a portion of ship that burned. A good short visit for people not committed to a full museum trip.
Interesting maritime museum shaped like a boat with interesting old pictures and models of what was once an important industry in San Francisco.
Beautiful place! The exhibition was beautiful and wonderfully curated, I loved every single bit of it! Also, the volunteer at the front desk was very kind and helpful.
A fun, and one of the few free places on the waterfront. WPA murals and interesting architecture and exhibits.
Stopped by for a quick look see. Super interesting display of a person from Japan that sailed from Osaka to San Francisco in 1962 on a little sailboat called the Mermaid.
Was able to breeze through this museum quickly, which makes it a great stop when exploring the area. Its free, so its worth checking out to learn more about SF maritime and its history. The museum also has a really nice outdoor area overlooking the beach, which made for a nice pit stop to relax and get out of the sun before checking out what else the museum and surrounding areas had to offer. Good for all ages.
Fun time with my family and friends and all
If you like history and ships, a great place. 3 different parts though.
In all the years Ive been coming to San Francisco to swim at Aquatic Park, Ive never gone inside this one. Today I did and was glad I finally did. Its very easy to forget that San Francisco was founded on a maritime tradition. I especially love all the old photos they have on display depicting those days and telling some of their stories. A worthwhile place to visit (did I mention that its FREE?) the next time youre in the city.
Super fantastic Maritime Museum #SFO
Nice place to look around and front desk person very helpful
Good place to visit and view some of the most unique historical items in the world for free
A National Park without the trees. Come see a living history of shipping and boating on the west coast of the USA.
Last week during my visit to SF I visited this museum. The museum is beautiful, the more beauty is from outside, the sea beach is excellent. I love the blue sky and fresh air.
Fantastic artworks by Hilaire Hiler. He even invented the Hilers Psychological Color Chart.
Just popped in to glance at what was there. Definitely will be sending my husband and father back in the future.
Historical Museum Beautiful Scenery
Walk out, feel good!
Pretty small, so not a lot to do. The price makes it well worth it, though. Great for families/kids.
Went here after the pier which is something we want our kids to do!
What a disaster the entire maritime museum is. $10 a person to so called see the boats. Do not do that the only boat of Interest is not being shown for a year. Save the Mone terrible the other boats you can go on all roped off you cant see much. The visitor center is well done do that only. This the museum is an impressive building but its literally empty maybe 5 thinks to peek at. Not the 35,000 maritime history items they claim. Very poor worst national park ever and Ive been to most all. Avoid.
This is a work in process. It is currently being upgraded but the exhibit is very small. The plus is a nice free bathroom and a good view of the bay
Cool place to visit. Lots of interesting stuff to see.
Five stars because those wooden ships manned by iron men deserve to live forever. Batten down the hatches and reef the main boys shes gonna blow!
Love it!
We like history, so we enjoyed the museum.
What a great building. Loaded with all worts of maritime history, the building itself is a wonder to see, and the location cant be beat. Great place to take kids.
Small museum of SF maritime culture and history. Not a daunting size and can be viewed pretty quickly compared to large museums.
Nice if you are there and are interested in local maritime history. Other than its not that unique or tell the maritime with a broader scope.
Cool building shaped like some kind of ship! The inside is small, but it has interesting objects and sailboat models.
Nice museum and free
Just went here in April. Took lots of photos and video. The place is shaped like a big boat. Lot of photosand other items to see.The collection includes, ship plans and marine engineering drawings, maps and charts and oral histories and audio recordings and much more.In the Object Collections they have large parts of sailing vessels rescued from an undignified demise, to fine art created for the documentation and admiration of such vessels. There are items from the everyday lives of people making their living at sea.
Interesting place of you like sailorship and boats. It have a lot of interesting stuff related to the ships from the gold rush
Wonderful experience!
Informative and friendly staff/volunteers. I wish Id visited here on day 1 in SF.
If youre a history buff and you love WPA work, you need to visit!
It is very interesting to see the artifacts there!
Its free but it doesnt have big things and is not very interesting. Its very small. I dont reccommend it.
Wonderful little park right at the end of Fishermans Warf with amazing views on the Bay and the city. This small little sand beach even invites for a swim.
Amazing view of the sea
Love just hanging out here
The following link to a different way than I do not know?
