The view is absolutely fantastic from up on the cliff, the hidden treasures of Californias coast. We did not walk down to the beach, it is quite a descent to get to where it is. We enjoyed watching the hang gliding club fly around us, it really is amazing! The wind is pretty constant which makes it a bit cold, but the sun feels great. I suggest to bring windbreaker clothing to wear as a outer layer to cut the wind, you will stay warm. Many, many, many whales were feeding while we were there. I never did see any whale tails as they were feeding, but lots of mouths and blow spouts everywhere! You will want to bring binoculars if you have them. I want to stress I am 41 years old and never in my life have I ever seen as many whales as I did today. It all depends on what time of the year it is and migration, but apparently July 11 was a hitter!! I dont think I couldve paid to go on whale tour boat and ever see what we did today from the cliff. FYI in California it is mandated for everyone to wear a mask in public and keep a 6 social distance. Have fun and enjoy this beautiful place!
Beautiful place to get away for some fresh air and exercise. Total trail length can be covered in 45 min to an hour. There are sand dunes and the trail leads down to a beach. There are cliffs which are quite a sight from the bottom. On a good day, there are gliders that take off from those cliffs and are cool to watch. Its a dog friendly trail. Plenty of dogs here. Parking lots are huge. Never had trouble parking there.
Great place if you have a dog. Just clean up after your dog and keep the beach nice for everyone. Beautiful sand for dog running and ball throwing.
I really like this beach and also the spectacular view of the beach form the cliff. This is a dog friendly beach and dogs are off leash. There is a steep sandy approach to the beach from the parking lot. Going down is easy, coming back up on the sand can be little challenging. On a warm day it is a great place to relax and spend time here. Great place for dog owners, to let their dogs play on the beach. Even though there is ample parking, place gets busy, you may have to wait a bit to get parking spot.
Wow this place rocks. Amazing for bluff lovers, but easy access (to the south) to beach. See hang-gliders launch and soar overhead, or walk in either direction for stunning coastline views. To the north the trails take you past several old WWII bomb bunkers. To the south you can walk for miles on trails over high sand dunes that can at times be quite challenging (hiking boots are best). At all times the views are breathtaking.
I love it !!! Totally I ma recommend it to you my friend *** this day that I went there I was just feeling like in the paradise just wanted to say thank you LORD for make a wonderful and amazing place to enjoy and feel his love
Great place to bring your dog and enjoy the beach. Kids love it too. Amazing views and fun hike in. Hang gliding nearby. A must visit if in SF. Cant wait to go back and parking is close by.
We have been checking out various dog parks around the bay area and Fort Funston was rated highly, so we went to check it out a few days ago (October 2020). It was actually the nicest time Id ever had at a beach in SF. Mostly my experiences with SF beaches have been cold and windy, but the weather this time was hot and there was almost no wind.Fort Funston is located along SFs west coast, a long straight beach for miles and miles. From the dog section you can see all the way to the Cliff House. It isnt sectioned off from any other parts of Ocean beach, but it doesnt need to be. Its huge. The beach lies between the ocean and a steep cliff with old bunkers from WW1. The cliff has eroded over time and some of the bunkers have fallen down. Unless you park miles down the road and walk along the beach, the only way to the dog beach is down a steep sand slope. I think like 300 feet. So dont plan on bringing a lot of stuff. There are trails along the plateau as well. The dog beach is great. The dogs all seem pretty happy there, although it is definitely a plus if you have some kind of shade because the sun can beat down on you and there is no natural shade. There is more garbage around than I would like. There are no trash cans down on the beach, so I can see if people are lazy or drunk they might just leave all their stuff. The dog we were with didnt like the water that much because it was probably her first time seeing that much water. She didnt even want to get her feet wet. There were lots of dogs there that love the water. Also some people were surfing. I did not see any surfing dogs but if you have a surfing dog, this would be a great place for that.
Breathtaking views, beach access on top of old nuclear missile launch bunker. What more could you ask for?
Best beach in SF! Beautiful and full of happy dogs, including our own beach gal.
Not the most well-known beach, but one of the best around San Francisco. Its expansive, clean, scenic. Lots of parking. Lots of fun dog watching too :)
A great place to hike down to and along the beach in San Francisco with your dog. The parking lot can get crowded and the facilities are portables at the parking lot. There are water sources at the lot and along the trail to the North.
Wonderful view of ocean. My dog had fun too!
Beautiful dunes, easy hiking trails. Usually parking is easy. The best part about this place is seeing excited friendly dogs.
The view is breath taking and the hike down to the beach is fairly manageable. It was an AWESOME day and my dogs first beach experience. Not sure who had more fun him or me! The icing in the cake was seeing a pid of whales off the coast coming up for air!
The lot was really full. There was plenty of space without our masks, but we all had them on anyway. It all seemed so pristine until we discovered the massive sewage pipe running into the Pacific. All in all, we had big fun and saw alot of sand dollars.
Beautiful park with a lot of different trails that lead around the park, to sandy areas and even down to the beach, with a lot of happy dogs walking off-leash around. If youre worried about your dog interacting with others, you can always find a secluded area to play. Beautiful and fun for families and dogs!
Been going here for years. Lots of dogs for my pooch to play with. Theres a big grassy area for dogs to run. If your dog likes running on the beach and swimming the the ocean, this is the place. You and your dog will be able to bond at this beautiful and serene park. You can walk there without a dog too as long as you dont mind dogs coming up to greet you.
This is a place for moderate hike, with amazing ocean view. If you are lucky, u might have a clear sky to njoy this view. Usually it is foggy most of the time. But the view is breathtaking and surreal during sunsets.
Sunday on September, perfect weather and water temperature for getting wet. Outstanding point of view from the path. Long beach. Challenging parking and path down the cliff (sand sliding at some point). It would be great to have a bike parking and the trash removed several times on a busy weekend.
Fort Funston is on a bluff with easy parking. Combination dog off leash hiking area with paths to the beach and location for hanggliders to takeoff and land
Beautiful on any type of day. Big rolling dunes and old bunkers perched on a sheer cliff line over a generally quiet, albeit windy, beach. There’re a ton of little paths and while it’s not the biggest area, it doesn’t feel small.Bonus, there are always adorable dogs.
If you have a dog this is the best place to socialize them. Great trails and a nice strip of beach.
Amazing sunset & cute pups everywhere.
Always a great place to relax, hike and take the dogs to socialize with other dogs
Excellent place to let your pup run free. It’s one of the best places we’ve taken our dog to ever. Other dog owners were very chill and so were their dogs. Don’t miss this beautiful open space!
This hiking spot is a great place to get a good sweat. I burn over 600 calories when I hike, and it takes about 50 minutes from when I park and come back--lovely views of LA from all over the park. Because of COVID, masks are a must.
Very good view, the view in the afternoon is very beautiful
It’s so beautiful. So many different trails. Just don’t try to have a picnic there, it’s definitely an off-leash dog park
Took My Puppy on his First Hike here it was Perfect. Great place to take your dog with an amazing view!
Beautiful sights, tons of dogs playing, great sand dunes for kids. It can get cold and windy or sunny and toasty. You never know, so wear layers!
Loads of people and dogs with full parking lot. Nice day with a steep trail down to the beach. Huge, broad beach with hang glider cliff behind. Pretty place. Would go back.
Love this dog friendly spot! Pack water! Its a hike back up to the car park! Best be prepared
Truly the best experience for dogs and their humans!! Lots of space to run and have a good time. Definitely one of my dogs favorite spots!!
Considered a stereotypical LA place to hang out and hike, but its definitely more than that. Especially right now during quarantine, its a nice respite from home. Some of the trails are closed here but there is a good amount open. They also have marked the trail so that everyone can distance properly by staying on one side of the trail in each direction. The only issue is that some people find this difficult to do (for whatever reason). Because it does get pretty crowded here, weve stopped coming and dont plan on returning until after COVID.
Beautiful and large beach down a steep cliff.Lots of dogs off leash and great for dogs to play.
Very scenic and beautiful place to visit. People bring their dogs for walk. And if you are lucky u can see whales in the ocean, paragliders and surfers too
First time here. Wonderful beach that reminded us of Pismo beach. Yes, there is a big hill to climb back but it’s worth it. This is basically like a big dog park on the beach. It was our first time taking our dog to the beach and it was a great experience for all of us. Would definitely come back!
The views are just okay - better views from nearby tourist spots. Extremely crowded - many people not following social distancing guidelines. Very difficult to find parking on weekends, only a couple of chemical restrooms in a terrible conditions.
Great place to take your dog (or a friends) for a little time out of the house. Most people are good about keeping their dogs under control even if they are off leash but occasionally people who arent as responsible as they should be..
Great views, and hike to the beach wasn’t bad (until we had to hike back up a sand hill). I wouldn’t recommend taking kids and lots of beach gear as it will be difficult. It is a beautiful hike though.
Lots of hiking trails around the beach and old gun batteries. The trails and beach are off leash friendly for dogs. Fort Funston is also a popular place to go hang gliding, it is usually windy here. You can find some cool graffiti exploring the old gun batteries and other broken cement structures that litter the landscape. One thing I found somewhat troubling is the amount of dead birds along the beach.
Great views, 200 ft cliffs, you can see hang gliders jump off the cliff which is pretty cool. Very windy and cold even during peak summer so carry jackets with you. Also, if you dont like dogs, you may not like this place. Lots of dogs running around off leash.
Amazing beach with spectacular views.. got to see a pod of dolphins playing offshore. The waves can be a bit rough, so be careful if you go into the water
Lovely beach! Long, steep, difficult trail down (and back up again!). The day we were there, a man and his toddler had to be rescued from a cliff trail by the SF Fire Department.
Nice hike down to the beach. Decline/incline on the steep side. LOTS of dogs on the weekend I went = occasional dog owner that does not pick up so be cautious.
Rare dune scrubs left in the US -- lets take care of it
Huge off leash dog beach and park. Sandy and lots of hill climbing in the sand so be ready for a bit of a workout. Fun to watch the hang gliders on breezy days.
I arrived in the early afternoon on a sunny day with a mild breeze from the ocean. There were ample open spots to park. There are several trails to walk. Expect to see many dogs with their owners. Most people were wearing masks and practiced social distance. I plan to go soon.
This is one of a very few off-leash beaches in the SF Bay Area and, thankfully, dog owners seem to recognize their good fortune by picking up after their pets. The entire stretch of shoreline was spotless when I visited over Labor Day weekend. Even if you dont have a pet, watching dogs romping in the surf here and generally having a ball (or chasing one) is good for the soul. So is gazing at formations of pelicans flying overhead and the occasional hang glider silently floating over the bluffs. The only reason for the four stars is that the three portable toilets in the parking lot werent fit for human use. Two were filled to the level of the toilet seats with waste, the third was well on its way to becoming unusable as well. No idea why park employees werent maintaining them, but Id advise bringing your own TP and disinfectant wipes if you absolutely must answer natures call on the premises.
This is one of our favorite parks to bring our bulldog in San Francisco. Some call it the Disneyland for dogs since it’s you can take your pup on off-leash hikes along the cliffs and down to the ocean.Check out the ocean views and fields of ice plant (succulents) that bloom bright fuchsia flowers May to June. It’s a great site for photos - see the ones I took of @lilbulldogmolly on the south side of the park. The depending on the time of day you go, Karl the Fog provides some shade and keeps it nice and cool for your walk. Otherwise there are barely any trees for shade.Be careful walking too close to the edge of the cliffs. During gorgeous days we often hear dogs and their owners falling and needing to be rescued by the fire department.Dogs are so happy to run off leash that they may not realize there’s a cliff.
Awesome place to bring a dog and have them be able to run around freely or a human
Beautiful park with lots of walking trails and a path to the beach. A lot of people bring their dogs with them. A great place for a run or hike. As far as amenities, There are portable toilets and thats about it. No parking fees required.
The best place to walk your dogs, enjoy the ocean and hike!
Peaceful ... If you want to be out and be left alone to think .. I Give it 5s
Its a great place to Walk and look at beautiful view
Love this park as a place to walk around and walk on the beach. Hang gliders and paragliders take off above your head, which is beautiful to watch next to the ocean. Lots of cute dogs and families. Plenty of space for social distance, and plenty of open parking on the road. There isn’t just ONE main trail here - there are lots of meandering trails and areas to walk/sit/discover
Awesome off leash park. Plenty of space and trails. All of the owners seem responsible and attentive and I did not see any dogs that were aggressive or behavior issues.
Cant believe Ive lived in San Francisco for 11 years and today was my first visit to Fort Funston. Dog heaven and fun for everyone.
This is the most dog friendly beach Ive ever been to. I live going there and so does the pup.
My dogs absolute favorite place on earth. No leash required with very dog friendly beach and cliff walks. But be sure your dog stays on trail both for the wildlife restoration and so as to not run straight off a cliff.
Bring your climbing legs for the hills and/or stairs. So many happy dogs to watch
Beautiful place. Love seeing all the happy dogs.
Great place for a walk, even if you are not a dog person
Great park for a walk or bike ride. Beautiful ocean views! Well known and perfect for hang gliding and paragliding.
This place is great every time I come here. Plenty of parkings, great views, and the beach is cool too for your dog to roam around. The remains of the fort are something cool to check out as well.
Love this place especially at sunrise. An oasis in the city
This is the best dog park in the Bay Area. Hike for an hour or more in the off leash area. Throw sticks into the surf and watch your dog gleefully crash into the waves. Watch your dog run around with other dogs in a large enough area that they can easily sustain a full sprint. Ive never seen a dog fight here, nor abandoned poop. There is no easy access to fresh water at the parking lot, so its good to bring a five gallon jug and extra towels to rinse off the dog before you leave.
Great views of the coastline. There is a large parking lot and lots of trails. You can walk all the way down to the beach. A lot of people brought their dogs so I was in heaven. Like apparently everywhere in the San Francisco area, dont leave anything visible in your car if you dont want a window smashed in.
The most beautiful beach in Bay Area
So many dogs here!! If you love dogs like I do this place is heaven. This is a off leash dog park and I think it’s one of the only, if not the only spot where you can unleash your dog. There’s also a hang gliders spot windy af!
Always great to let the pup off leash and meet other friendly dog owners
This place is like dog heaven. Its the best off leash area in the bay. If youre not a dog lover you should probably stay away cause dogs run this place. My dog loves running around on the beach and the sand dunes. The hike back up to the parking lot from the beach is pretty intense.
An off-leash dog paradise! The best dog beach in the area, hands-down. The last bit of path down to the beach itself is pretty steep, but worth it! Were from out of town but will definitely visit again next time were in the area.
A great place for a short hike along the coast. Very dog friendly with many people walking their dogs. At first it may appear to be a dog park. Paved trails and sandy trails and amazing views of the coastline.
I nice outdoor area with coastal bluffs and sandy trails.
The dog walkers seem to love the outback outside trails and there is enough space for couple Hundred plus ... And so nice to see that when the full lot was empty after the mass exciting at sunset there was no garbage (Thankyou to all) not even from the I cant be bothered to walk to the garbage type and set it outside there door and drive away. (Canidates4Manditory Staralization)
Great place for a dog walk. You can go no leash but be careful around the cliffs if youve never been
A good place for a walk with a dog while enjoying great views of the ocean.
A beautiful scenic place that is very dog friendly. I took some pictures on top of the old battery/bunker and the views were amazing.
One of my favorite places in SF - A Hidden Gem of San Francisco
Theres much to see. From waves, para and hand gliders, sand, people and dogs playing. Many trails to hike along.
Great for sunsets. Very dog friendly.
Love that my pup can’t be off leash, care free. Be careful though, there are some pretty gnarly cliffs towards the top parking lots and prior to getting to the beach on the North side entrance. You can do a pretty nice hour long loop if you know the park. Highly suggest checking it out, especially for dog owners!
I love Fort Funston! It’s the perfect size, with an awesome beach trail as well as great hiking trails on the mountain side and bluffs. Tons of free parking, and lots of water fountains. Please note that most of the dogs are off-leash. You will literally see every dog breed here! Awesome place that many don’t know about!
I love this place!!! I made some incredible memories with my dog, my boy Yoshi. He loved this place and there’s nothing like this place near SF. He’s in a better place now and I hope doggie heaven is as beautiful as this place. Rest In Peace Yoshi, you were the cutest Boston to roam Fort Funston.
This is a fine place for watching hang gliders, walking the dog, or just enjoying the view.Beware of the stanky outhouses though! For urgent needs only...
This place is doggie heaven! It somehow works out that there’s always like hundreds of other dogs and humans here but you can still have a nice time to yourself too. If you’re more on the semi-fit side, there’s a decent stretch of beach you can climb down a cliff (via stairs or a hill) to get to and go for a nice walk along the beach. Or, if you can’t make it down to the beach, there’s also little trails and paths that are at the top level. It starts off paved, then gets a little more sandy and rugged as you progress. You can go for a 20-30 min walk or spend hours here. I bring my dog here almost every weekend, it’s a very popular spot for dog walkers and dog companions. It’s a nice spot to go to whether it’s foggy or sunny. There are also multiple vista points and leftover constructions from war preparations that are now graffitied. Also, there are usually hang gliders flying around. Everyone that goes here is friendly and just trying to have a good time.
Wonderful park with phantastic hikes!
A lovely and HUGE off-leash dog park in SF! There’s a huge parking lot, but also a small a area just north of the lot that allows for a little more hiking. The paths on top wind through wild cacti and are made of sand. There’s a main pain that’s paved that goes throughout the park. Near the hang-gliding area there’s a really nice and secluded overlook. The path down to the ocean is a workout! It’s made of round trunk “stairs” so that’s helpful. If these stairs won’t tire your dog out, running on the huge beach will! And you and your furry friend will have a great time meeting other dogs and running around the vast off-leash area.
Its dog town here. If thats what youre into, its heaven. Expect about a 15 minute hike to the beach.
Most recently came for a walk with a friend and her dog. Lots of parking available, but parking does get filled up on a beautiful day. Definitely wear shoes/sandals you dont mind getting sandy. Lots of area for dogs to run around and people are nice. Picnic tables near the top closer to parking.
Awesome place!Always love coming here. Its a Dogs world!
Beautiful views hike and water. Was awesome to let the dogs off leash and roam. We got super lucky with fabulous weather. Can’t wait to be back.
