Best fact. Park built over a old cemetary. There are dozens or tombstones toward the back. I guess there was a old school there and the faculty was put to rest there . Very pretty and slightly spoky.Behind the tombstones there is a small open area hidden from sight . High school kids would frequent this area at night to drink and well.... you remember hopefully . This spot has fast access to Washington st going down the hill for quick getaway if cops come for you. Just dont be to loud especially in the summer two houses are ear shot distance ..Scenic park with playground, exercise equipment and paved sidewalk. There are some benches. Plenty of open grass ..My only complaint is the homeless camp out in the day time and bathrooms are not up to Okay standards. Likely only cleaned once a day. But hey at least they open. !! If the closed go pee in the hidden area behind tombstones
Cool big trees. Fairly crowded and the playground was closed. The cemetery was cool...we estimated by the number of names, about 2000 bodies under the park! Loved the exercise equipment.
Cool little history gem inside a gorgeous small park. Check it out and wonder whats hidden beneath your feet.
Pioneer Park is a lovely place to enjoy some fresh air. The gravestones in the southwest corner of the park are neat. The trees provide good shade and the grass is well maintained. The playground areas seem nice, though they are closed right now due to the pandemic.
Great park. You can drink there! Great park to relax with the family and enjoy a glass of wine.
Great grassy area, lots of trees, lots of room to run and explore. Playground is okay, a little small but does the job.
Theres always plenty of open space and alcohol is allowed so its the perfect socially distanced hanging spot!
Nice park but I didnt anticipate so many dogs off leash
Great place to bring the baby and the dog. Beautiful, quiet, friendly people, mixed green areas so bring a blanket but you may find moist spots in the shade and dryer spots in the sun.. Every park experiences the seasons I guess.. Some do off leash dogs, which is totally cool with me, but just come with your pets trained, your kids on best behavior and show up with a smile :) Enjoy!!
Very nice park, though grass was wet at 11 am
So much history in this park. Also lots and lots of dead bodies buried underneath. Check out some of the tombstones that still remain, the rest were thrown into the canyon ages ago.
Because jts just a charming region
Just a great place to kick it for fresh air and silence. Maybe bring a lunch and soda to relax.
Good shade .. Nice place
Currently mostly closed off. But still a good neighborhood park for a walk around, good views and interesting neighborhood with older houses.
Great place to have a social distance picnic.
So I went to the park so this old mathen I gave him some food and it was a bit but then I tripped and fell and killed myself XD LOL just kidding I actually tripped and hurt my leg so I dont really like it cuz theres too many bumps everywhere haha
Expansive, well kept, maintained bathrooms, historic
There are no smoking signs and no dogs on the playground however people ignore them. The park is definitely for toddlers and not for kids over 5. I took my son and my nephew here and it was entertaining for about 20 minutes and that was a bit of a stretch. The kids were more than happy to leave when I said let’s wrap it up. The grave site is not right next to the playground like some reviews suggested but still a bit odd
Nice park... lots of dogs... sometimes they have events with music... lots of parking around the neighborhood and there is a small parking lot as well... the park has a lot of history and includes a small graveyard... check it out
Its quiet and clean...with a respectable crowd..
All parks are awesome!
Nice smooth lil hills perfect for pets
Nice park for kids to play on play equipment and picnics. Bathrooms available and a small parking lot off to the side. Make sure to check out the tombstones of some of San Diegos finest. For ghost hunters - the stones have been moved to the side for Park use but my understanding is the bodies are still where they were originally buried so you could be picnicking with guests.
Very calming, interesting trees. There are pull up bars and dip bars. Theres a restroom, a childrens playground. Dog owners come here, but its not very crowded when I came. There are grave stones in this park.
Great park. Plenty of room for a dog or kids to run around.
This park is closest to our house... We dont go often because of the homeless that have usually setup camp right next to the small playground. During summer they do concerts in the park and allow alcohol so some people love that
Small historic park, great for kids under 5. Has restroom. If you search you can find a spot with a view of Point Loma. Great place for a picnic with lots of trees and grass.
I just went there today for the 1st time ever, and Im a native San Diegan!! My fiancee and I rode our bicycles there and had a really good day. I made friends with a butterfly.
Pretty good community park. They host neighborhood events that are nice as well.
This is the place Ive been to since I was a child back in the early 70s. This is a beautiful Park and it used to be called Pioneer Park. Used to be a Cemetery back in the 1800s. The last person to be buried there is back in 1921. It was a Catholic and Protestant Cemetery divided by a row of eucalyptus trees.
Beautiful place to relax and enjoy a good time
A turn-of-the-century graveyard incorporated into the park would make a fine October Excursion
Great place to relax and enjoy the view.
Enjoyed lunch at this family park with my husband. Nice park to enjoy with your loved ones.
This is an interesting place to visit and even more if you know the history of what the city of San Diego did to the people buried there. or should I say didnt do to the people who are buried there as they are still there. Go at night and see if you can see any ghosts.
Wear comfy shoes and clothes. Hydrate and bring your camera.
Best kept secret in mission hills. Cute little quiet park with ample parking and nice amenities.
Scary on Halloween. Great for ghost huntibg(some interesting apps)
Well shaded park, with a small updated playground. The tombstones are the highlight of uniqueness to this park!
This place is so spooky, which makes sense given its history. It always feels like someone (or a few someones) is watching you. Theres a certain part of the park that makes every hair on my body stand on end when I walk into it, like something is about to happen, and that I should run away before it does. But thats part of the fun of going there at 3 in the morning.
I usually like to bring my kids to different community parks, so I searched online and found this cute park. The atmosphere of the park is peaceful and the park is very clean, I did not go inside the restrooms, but from what other reviews said they are very clean too. I did not get to close to the graveyards, because I had to stay on guard at the playground with my kids. This park is perfect for a family gathering, and for any other event, also I did not see any transients which was great.
It was awfully small right next to a school and they were having gym class and the kids were rude i had a stroller they wouldnt move over i couldnt. The bathroom was disgusting.not for families amd there was homless people sleeping all over. WEIRD
Great place for family fun. Love love the summer concerts
Had a blast there! So beautiful place to hang out!
Scary park
Grim as hell. Mass graves are definitely nightmare inducing.
Place is little scary a night did ghost tour didnt realize how many people were buried there.
This is a very cool historic park that is located in Mission Hills. You can bring your dog or kids here at night to let them run around, and there is plenty of shade to cool off during the day. This park is also great for parties - you can get there early on a Saturday or a Sunday to reserve your spot and can hang out all day.Parking can be an issue sometimes, but there is residential parking and street parking nearby. If youre not keen on cemeteries, this park may not be for you because there are people buried underneath the grass and the tombstones have been moved to the back of the park.
Great park with a lot of history. We bbqed here for a get together and things were clean and no problems. Lots of room people having a great time. Public restrooms were clean. Highly recommend having a get together here!
The park is very rich in history. I wish that people would have a little bit more respect for it. Pioneer Park was once a graveyard and actually still is. Theres hundreds of bodies still buried there without headstones. Theres one section of the park where about 50 headstones still remain. I watched a group of kids play soccer one afternoon, and their ball kept slamming multiple times into the headstones. A kid would run over and retreave the ball from the headstone like it was just some normal thing. Running right on top of other headstones with complete lack of respect. There were a couple adults there with the kids, so i didnt understand how they didnt just have the kids move back a little. Some people have respect and some dont. Kids need to be taught respect as well. I had a hard time not saying something, but it caused my visit at the park to be very short. It also has some shady people that like to hang out and party. Its a beautiful Park/Graveyard and it deserves to be treated accordingly.
Great park with plenty of space, public restroom, playground.
Nice safe park for walking your dog or playing with your kids. Friendly people to talk with.
Most people don’t know they are playing above a cemetery, over 1800 people are still buried underneath. The headstones were removed and thrown into a nearby ditch in the 70’s and made into a park. In the 80’s they realized what was done and the headstones where placed on the side and a plaque of everyone that was buried there was placed in the middle of the park.
Love this place. Especially when they have free concerts in the summer.
A haunted tale worthy of some research.
Beautiful park but the history on it is extremely disturbing.
Gorgeous!
Wish theyd fix the monument to the pioneers talking about calvary cemetery.
It’s a nice open park with a great breeze from the ocean and the hills. We found two play structures for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 years old, swings and a lot of space for running and relaxing. Right across the street there’s an open tennis court. It’s ok to bring your dog but with a liege.
Cool park but it needs to take better care of the headstones there
I have never had bad experiences. Its a nice park.
Clean park. Public restrooms. Play area for kids. Old cemetery and a view of bay and airport beyond. Not best place for big family pow wow. More for a quick visit with kids or dog to get some air and some energy out or to read book, relax a bit.
Cool park with the bonus of original cemetery in the back!
Cool, and scary at night! Underutilized, undervalued historic city park.
We took small children for a picnic and, much to my surprise, the place we called, The old Spanish graveyard had been resurrected into a lovely little neighborhood park. (Fifty years ago, my friends and I would meet here after dark and pretend not to be scared. It was neglected in some areas, manicured in others. Both conditions elicited spooky stories.) We spent several hours there, listening to joy, childrens laughter, peace and serenity, just blocks away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I was very glad to see how this parks previous purpose was honored. I highly recommend taking some quiet time at Pioneer Park. (Take a child or two so nobody wonders who this weirdo watching the kids is.)
Unusual park. Former cemetery that was converted to a park. Sloping lawn areas with lots of trees. Historical headstones were moved to a corner of the park. Small parking lot. Great for picnics and throwing a frisby. NOT a dog-off-leash park.
Beautiful oasis just above the chaos at the airport
Awesome Lil park in the middle of mission hills
Easy access. Clean and very family-friendly.
Haunted and cool rich neighborhood
Super interesting place to visit.
We stopped here for Ghosts and Graveyard tour. It is a spooky park.
This park is one of my favorites in San Diego. Plus, fun fact: It was built atop of an old cemetery! Spooky.
Its actually a cemetery its nice but a little weird
The park looked fun!Lots of good things going on.Tennis courts was busy and for me great to get out.
Fun park for families or to just get outside. Wasnt too crowded and provided a fun jungle gym and swing for kiddos. Large grass area covered by beautiful large trees make it a really pleasant place to just relax (or play with the kids).
Some really killer looking trees and super old gravestones make for an interesting trip. More of a place to just walk around a little bit and head out. Not really any benches or tables to hang out on.
Great park but built on a cementary
Love the staff here. So courteous and kind
Great place to relax.
Quit and calm.
Lovely park
Went to a wonderful concert there.
Great place to relax and play with your kids. Lots for toddlers to do here.
Beautiful! Great history
F.Y.I the Whole park is a Cemetery️. I guess back in the day someone inspired by corporate greed was ready to demolish the Cemetery and put something else in its place. They removed most of the tombstones but planned to leave the buried in place. The surviving families of the deceased fought back and was able to have it remain. The tombstones in the back are the ones that were able to be saved (again there were way more). Someone said they wanted to visit the Cemetery in the back. I told them the Whole park is a Cemetery because it is- your kids are playing frisbee and having birthday parties on top of dead people. Signs of a historical cemetery are the weeping Cypress trees, which this park does have. It is a good place for families, clean, safe, peaceful (as Cemeteries usually are). Theres a little playground near the tombstones and restrooms- sinks are outside. The haunted trolley tour also makes stops here, the tour guide has more info. A small parking lot is inside, but theres ample parking on the street, and a tennis court right across the street. So if you arent creeped out eating ice cream & cake on someones final resting place️, come on down. Although I also wouldnt mind a thriller like zombie take over from the deceased....people partying on my grave would piss me off (theres nuns buried here️). Have fun !
Didnt knoe the park is a cemetery as well.
