The ropes mansion was a beautiful stop on our trip around Salem. The garden behind the house was quaint, pretty and had some lovely flowers which considering it was near the middle of October was impressive. If you are going to stop and get a picture at the mansion you must walk behind the house to view the garden. The garden is open 24hrs a day. Taking a stroll through at night was highly recommended by our tour guides.

Anyone with a thing for anything witchy (Hocus Pocus), gloomy, and fall-ish will love this house & its amazing flower garden. Its even better to visit in the fall time after watching the Hocus Pocus movie! But its also incredible to visit in summer and see the garden in full bloom. It surely has something magical to it.

Really cool to see if you like Hocus Pocus, but also if you just like history! The garden is beautiful; I could have spent all day there. The best part is that its completely free and centrally located. I would highly suggest grabbing some lunch to-go on Essex and eating it on one of the benches here.

Beautiful public garden. The mansion was closed to tours, but the garden was a lovely place to walk through. Even in the fall, there were vibrant flowers to brighten up a dreary day. Would highly recommend passing through on your way through Salem.

Picturesque! I just walked by and took a few photos. Also if you go down this street youll come face to face with many old homes that are just as equally beautiful to stare at. If you enjoy colonial history/architecture, I recommend taking a stroll from here down some blocks to The Pickering House.

While it is a historic home, many younger people appreciate that this was ‘Allison’s house’ from the movie ‘Hocus Pocus.’I highly recommend checking out the gardens in the backyard - it is a true hidden gem and very isolated and peaceful and serene.

Just stumbled on this treasure, open to the public for a contemplative stroll, right next to the oldest congregational church in Salem (1629). Many of the rare items brought here from the Arnold Arboretum. Every turn brings you to another startling find. Quiet and almost deserted in this otherwise busy and crowded town.

Free of charge visit to historical building in Salem. It has original furniture and they still look amazing. Even though tempted to try each of them please dont they are over 200 years old and deserve respect to preserve them for even longer.Staff are very nice and you can chat to them but there is no guided tour. The building itself is open on the weekends from noon till 4pm over Summer time and it is NOT open during weekdays. However the garden is amazing and open every day even if you could not come in time to visit the museum pop into this hidden garden and enjoy its beauty. Salem is not a super busy big city but you will feel relaxed after a few moments being there for sure.

Second the tour guides inside were so informative and really explained everything well! The house was huge with so much to see and read! Almost everything in there is the real stuff it blew my mind! Absolutely loved this house found it super interesting!

‘Alison’s house’ (Hocus Pocus) has a beautiful story behind it! And the garden that’s literally behind it is truly magical. Over 5000 species of plants, apparently! Plus a little free library. I could’ve sat here all day! Don’t skip this place when you’re visiting! The whole neighborhood is beautiful.

We went on a Sunday in the summer and the Mansion was free and open to the public. The garden is always open during daylight hours. The mansion was a nice mix of museum displays and full rooms set up as they would have been while the family lived there. Everything is very well preserved. My favorite part, funnily enough, was the image they had on their do not touch signs. The garden was in full bloom during our visit and had story book pages throughout in collaboration with the public library. Definitely worth the visit, just a few steps from the Witch House.

This is the best hidden gem in Salem. It is the best public garden! There are benches to relax on, even some grass under the trees you could enjoy. Its free and there are some really cool plants, if you know what youre looking for. This made ever childhood dream come true. Ok, not really because I came here at night and it was closed. There was mo gate blocking off the back yard but my friends were yelling at me about trespassing so I sadly cant tell you if it is fabulous or not. Allison and I are officially best friends though, so have no fears. Binx and Max were not around, probably looking for sneakers somewhere.

The house was built for Samuel Barnard, a merchant. In 1768, Judge Nathaniel Ropes, Jr., purchased the house from Barnards nephew. The Ropes family then inhabited the house until 1907, when the house was given to the Trustees of the Ropes Memorial for public benefit.

Very beautiful mansion as well as the gardens, went on a haunted footsteps ghost tour and was told that the mansion was once the home of Nathaniel & Abigail Ropes. Nathaniel was a judge and key figure during the infamous Salem Witch Trials.According to legend, the mansion is haunted by the ghost of Abigail who died after her nightgown caught on fire in one of the upstairs fireplaces. It is said that she was so prone to outbursts that people ignored her screams, believing she was just yelling at the servants. To this day her spirit is still said to roam the halls of the Ropes Mansion. Our guide was awesome! I would recommend this location as well as the tour.

Robinson is probably rolling in his grave at what a despair his garden has become! Went towards the garden because the front of the house had large beautiful flowering plants. Literally once we passed the gate there was nothing in the garden but dirt. You could even see the irrigation piping coming up above the ground. There was not one flower in the entire garden. There were a few patches where someone had tried to plant some items in a row, but you could tell that that person did not know what they were doing. When you have a historic garden you bring in already grown beautiful plants or already grown beautiful flowers to transplant and showcase. Someone had literally planted rows of brand new sprouts, and they planted them very Close together so that when the plants grow bigger there will not be any room and also they will not show case by the end of this summer.

The mansion itself is amazing, however one of the tour guides had a chip on her shoulder. My husband took a picture and the flash went off. It was completely unintentional. She was rude about telling him that there is no flash photography, and then proceeded to follow us from room to room. It became so uncomfortable we left before we got to see everything.
