Had a great tour of the caverns. Sadly because of the virus there arent as many tourists coming through so at the moment instead of having a tour every 20 minutes theyre having them on every hour. We had a small group there were only five of us so it was very nice not being so crowded in the different rooms of the cave. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and had been working there for a couple of years. Hes in college so tipping at the end though not required was greatly appreciated Im sure.

The Dixie Caverns is a fun little experience to slide into your weekend. The experience is not wheelchair friendly as there are many flights of narrow stairs and passageways. The caverns are amply lit with lighting and the flooring is actually paved with flagstone and brick. Handrails are throughout the caverns. The gift shop has public restrooms and paraplegic parking. The caverns were discovered by two boys in the early 1900’s after their dog chased after an animal and disappeared into the side of the hill. The boys got rope and rescued the dog before contacting the owner of the land. The next three years were spent by the farmer and two boys exploring all of the many caverns. Dixie was the name of the dog that fell into the cavern.

Take the cavern tour it is Amazing. Better yet stay at their RV park it is so big and spacious in their pull through spots. Tour guide was amazing a true gentleman and so knowledgeable on the cavern. The man inside at the rental and tour counter was sweet, professional and courteous. He was very helpful in helping find items for our rv in the nearby town. The whole family felt welcomed including our poodle. Our kids learned so much and they encourage questions. Such a neat place we will return.

1st time taking a tour of a cavern. Very cool place to see nothing like being inside mountain looking at what nature can accomplish. Tour guide was a very nice young man with a lot of quirky jokes about the cavern. Very cool place to kill a few hours. Tours were every hour be prepared for steps inside the cavern. Nice little gift shop for the cavern. There is also a Antique mall attached to the cavern gift shop but that left a lot to be desired. Not a true antique mall more like a bunch of 1930-modern overpriced stuff (They must look at Ebay and match the prices of what sellers are asking not what its selling for). Hospitality and organization of the Antique mall is severely lacking but the Cavern Tour Guide and Cavern gentlemen working inside the cavern gift shop was great. We didnt stop for the Antique mall though we stopped for the Cavern Tour and that was very nice. Please tip the tour guide its not required but the college tour guide sure appreciated it.

This was such a great place to visit. We initially found this place when looking for attractions near Roanoke. When we learned they had a campground too, we were sold! The employees we met at the shop and our tour guide were all genuinely nice and interested in the cavern history. The tour is well worth the value. Youll see neat stuff and hopefully learn a little too. Its a little under an hour long with a fair amount of steps up and down. The campground was a pretty good experience too. We spent Friday and Saturday night there in early January, so it was quiet. Almost like having the place to ourselves. The facilities are clean and the showers hot, but bring your own paper towels and hand soap. They didnt have any in either the mens or womens room.

Reasonably priced and great for kids, if they don’t mind some stairs up and down. Nice and cool in the caverns, do prepare to get a little water dripped on you (not a ton). Some of us wore sandals, but wear sneakers if you don’t want your feet to get wet (we didn’t mind but some might). The caverns are BEAUTIFUL, and our tour guide, Brandon, taught us all about them and was funny and personable to boot. Bring a little cash so you can tip your tour guide! We were very comforted by the requirement that everyone had to wear masks, sanitizer was set out at certain places, and the tour guide did their best to keep different families on the tour at a reasonable distance. If you do not want to, cannot, or refuse to wear a mask, this place isn’t for you! Employees and other guests aren’t going to put themselves at risk just for your comfort.

We camped here in our 34ft travel trailer. Pull through site, we were in spot 59 and had plenty of room although some sites were very tight and I’m not sure where you would put all of your out door living stuff. Right off the interstate and at the foot of a mountain, nice views! Loved the full hook up! Gift shop was cute and you get a discount for the cavern tour when you camp. We were pleasantly surprised at the cavern tour, the tour guide matt I think was his name was perfect! He made the tour! Lots of steps and some steps are steep and narrow. Not the most grand cavern but 100% worth a visit. We would come back here and camp and visit the cavern again! The bath house wasn’t open due to covid so I can’t comment on that, there was not a playground and that was the only complaint from the kids, wifi was spotty at best, my kids were not able to get online to get their school work done but we had good cell service to hot spot! Worth a visit for sure! Beautiful scenery and the town of Salem was pretty neat!

We have visited many caverns similar to Dixie, and this is one of our favorites. On both the times I have visited the caverns, the tour group was small. In fact, the first time we came here, we had a personal guided tour! The caverns have an antique mall attached to the gift shop, with all kinds of vintage fayre. I did manage to find a rare Knight Rider Hot Wheels car here which pleased me greatly!Plenty of parking, and its very easy to find just off the main road. And the name Dixie? It was the name of the dog of the chap who discovered the caverns!

Visited yesterday for the first time on my visit to Roanoke. The Caverns were awesome. Really enjoyed our tour guide. She was very informative and interesting. There are quite a number of stairs for anyone who may have issues. It is also a bit chilly so bring a jacket. Great activity for the hot days. We even got to see a couple salamanders and a bat sleeping. It is $14 a person normally. We happened to come across an advertisement at a rest stop for $2 off each person. They might also have them in hotels and such. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was two of us and two other people so not crowded and got a good intimate tour.

Impressive cave system with many different interesting formations, cracks and crevices. Guided tour takes you on a journey through various subterranean layers and rooms and gives a history of the caverns and an idea on its origins (though for a more accurate account simply open to the book of Genesis). There are stairs which are numerous in spots but they do have handrails, still may be a bit tough for folks who have mobility issues. The caverns are well lit and the guide was pretty interactive with people. Theres also a gift shop and flea market.

Highway 81 is right above the campground but because it is in a gully the noise isnt overwhelming, more like white noise. Its a quiet place to camp except for the interstate noise. It would be a really good place to camp if it wasnt for the hidden prices. Its a great price if camping year round, but if you leave you better leave on your end of month rent date. If you dont the price doubles and they dont tell you that. Like me for instance, my rent was due on the 21, i was back home with family for the holidays, well I went back on the 28 and picked my camper up to bring it back home. For the month it is 560.00, well when I settled up for the 7 days, instead of breaking it down like a normal place would which it wouldve been like 18 dollars a day, no thats not the case, they said it was 34 dollars a day that if your doing it yearly than you get a discount. Well long story short, 560.00 a month which is just say 4.5 weeks, to 230.00 for the 7 days, and thats with them saying the 7th day was free. So watch what you do, because they dont tell you the fine line.

As a campground, its decent. I wouldnt consider this to be a place you spend several days at, more of an overnight stop along the way, which is why I rated it 3 stars. Its a nice little overnight campground. The sites are level enough that we could drive in and park with our little class-b. About half the sites are pull-through. Its a tiny campground, and the only negative to that is as others have said, the sites are pretty close to each other. The hosts are pleasant, the facilities clean and functional if a tad dated. The cavern was a nice bonus, we had more than enough time to enjoy the cavern in the morning before checkout and getting back on the road.If you expect a normal full featured campground to take the kids to, youll be disappointed. If you need a place to get off the highway for the night, it does the job well.
