Funky old joint is a community fave! Keep it alive!
Saw an educational film about the Salem witch trials. The film was done well. Cute little theater. The three of us were the only ones there! Was just a room off to the side really and probably would only have seated about 30 people. Was a nice way to get inside and learn a little bit while resting before getting out into the hustle and bustle of the town.
I love this little theater. They often show first-run movies. Although their projection equipment may not be as high tech as bigger theaters this place is never crowded. The snack bar is very complete. Bathrooms are clean and theres easy parking in the malls parking garage. If nothing else I dont have to fight my way through the Liberty Tree Mall crowds to see a flick.
I give this lovely little spot five stars just because it took me back to the cinemas of my childhood. Dont expect any bells and whistles like reclinable seats, but do expect an amazing cinematic experience that will take you to the greatest memories of yesteryear
Great utilization of available space! Superb sound and picture quality only hampered (ever so slightly) by a screen with visible division lines.
A great classic cinema. Don’t expect anything fancy but still a great location to visit! Been around for over 25 years
This mall has everything: a homey cinema complex, restaurants including a delicious Thai restaurant, a vegetarian Bakery, wonderful unique shops of every kind.
We enjoyed our experience here! Concession had everything you would need. We were visiting during the Horror Fest to view The Blair Witch Project and the staff running the event were very kind and knowledgable.
I really appreciate having a local cinema. I hope they are able to find a good buyer.
I agree with the reviews that mention a needed renovation due to things like carpets, seats, bathrooms etc. This theater does have a lot of heart, and brings some great independent films to The North Shore. I also really loved the chalk art for each movie playing. When we saw a movie about a month ago we noticed that there was a very small hole in the screen that appeared as a white dot throughout the entire movie. The floors were sticky, and the seats felt like school bus seats. Lastly, our snack mix we bought was stale. I hope this theater, with its historical value and location are able to make some changes in the near future. But again, this location does have a great selection of films and events. If you’re a movie buff and looking to watch a movie that’s not playing anywhere else, this is the spot. Unfortunately Cinema Salem just hasn’t gotten the entire movie-going experience up to par yet.
I have recently moved to Salem, and the theatre is within walking distance from my home.I went to see my first film there tonight, and it may be my last. Movie was great, but the theatre is in deplorable condition and in need of major renovation. Carpets, furniture in lobby are filthy. Bathroom is a disaster, dirty and falling apart. For such a beautiful, clean city I was really shocked.
Saw the 10th anniversary screening of Paranormal Activity. Very cool little movie theater. It has a lot of energy. Confirmed haunted.
Fun local family cinema, more reasonably priced than the big multiscreen theaters. Sometimes you can see interesting arthouse, indie, or limited release films here along with blockbusters and special screenings.
Would give zero stars if I could. Bought tickets in advance for Avengers End Game. Turns out the theatre oversold tickets and didnt have enough seats for everyone. Their resolution? If you want to leave well refund you. No, we dont want to leave, we want to watch the movie we paid to see in advance so I guess well sit on the floor. Concession closed about 40 minutes into the 3 hour movie so I couldnt even get popcorn. The kid at the counter was very rude and mean. Im very upset. Terrible place. I wanted to cry. Wont go back.
If you are in the North Shore support Salem cinema! Theyve got beer and always the best new movies
Awesome staff, even better popcorn! Keeping small cinema alive, love this place!
Simple, no frills movie going. Perfect if youre just trying to catch a movie alone.
Liked the historical short film regarding the Salem witch trials.
They always have awesome showings and the film festival is wonderful!
Movie theater is great, the bathroom is falling apart. Flush on the toilet only works a certain way, Faucet handles spin around. Feels like a beach bathroom where its there but just not attended to outside of soap and toilet paper.
This place a good small theater with interesting programming. I like that they get Indies as well as blockbusters.
Saw Rocky Horror here. Nice employees.
It was cool taking my sons to a movie theater I grew up going to back when it was $1.00 they loved it the only thing they didnt like was the hard seats other then that they loved it
It would be a great place to take a date as its in the old East India mall... Now rebranded as the Witch City mall... Like a ghost town, very fitting description seeing its in salem... Small quiet theater but they need some better films and newer ones more often!
Cinema Salem has 3 theaters that are kind of small and a really small screening room but they have the widest variety of movie theaters becaus of there screening room where they show small time movies or documentaries to give you a different perspective. The snacks bar has very butterd popcorn and different sweats to choose from.
Some of these older downtown cinemas have lousy projection or sound, but Ive never had an issue here. Be aware that, because its Salem Pricing, youre still paying $11 for a matinee.
Interesting place, just know your not going to a huge chain cinema. Its a funky little old timey type spot.
Great small theater. 4k screens with excellent audio.
My favorite local cinema. Funky, friendly, familiar. This is not a grand cinema palace, but more like fun movies with you favorite film geeks. Good snacks, nice little coffee bar on site, restaurants nearby, and a comfortable, quiet, independent theatre for an evening out at the movies.
Love these small older theaters. Definitely fits in with downtown Salem.
Old feel with a cozy coffee shop. Great deals on consesstions. Awesome reasonable ticket pricing. They also offer a frequent movie card. Gift certificates. The staff is kind. Friendly and helpdul
I hadnt been to this theater since I was a teenager decades ago, but Im so glad I went recently. Although the seating is the same as any old-fashioned theater, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the projection/image (digital, bright, saturated) and the sound as well. Ive been to many smaller brand-name theaters that dont compare. Its also nice to go somewhere to see first-run movies without the crowds and without having to travel far at all.
Its small and locally owned, but still shows all the big blockbuster hits. It also shows independent films and documentaries that relate to the history of Salem and the area in general. They have a snack bar, as well as a small cafe right next door. Its not as crowded as the big theaters so its great for date night or a relaxing evening taking in a show.
Love this place, hands down best cinema.Great staff and awesome place to throw a party.
Fun place to go watch a movie instead of going over there at the AMC theater in Danvers this is a great place much cheaper
Some block busters, some indie films. A home theater setup for very quirky films Not a chain.
Changed a while lot since the last time I was there. Still a great place to visit to learn about our countries history.
Its a typical independently owned local theater. Nothing special, but prices are much better than movie chain. There are three theaters so choices are limited. They do have the Salem film fest there.
Needs makeover and maybe new upscale seating.
Clean, staff are nice, but theaters are small.
I grew up in this movie theater Ive seen every big motion picture in this movie theater its nice and friendly atmosphere is something I always go to
One of the only small theaters in the area. See art films here.
Old-school movie experience! I actually *prefer* the regular good comfy seats here... rather than the couch-like monster seats that are at Lib now. COFFEE SHOP DRINKS available for movie snacks!
Very knowledgeable, helpful staff.
Very convenient for dinner and a show or vice versa. Parking at night not a problem at all.
My friend and I have been coming almost weekly for many years now. The staff is always friendly and gracious in helping us.The MOVIES are terrific, as is the price!! Cannot beat this theater!!!
3 multiplex screens AND 1 art house screen - far more variety than normally found outside a major city like NYC
Just a word to balance the review that complained about rude staff. I go there often because I like the local, home-town feel of this small independent cinema. Ive never had a rude exchange with the staff, have always found them helpful and friendly. (And the popcorn is tasty, too.)
Come here every year we are here
Cinema Salem is a great little theatre that shows both general release movies and harder to find independent films.
This place is Salems answer to Cabot St. cinema in Beverly. Cinema Salem places first fun films but also offers indie films. The theater could use some updating, it seems to be the same when I used to go there as a kid in the 80s. It is not stadium seating and sometimes you have to play the moving game when someone tall sits in front of you. The service has always been good and I do enjoy the ads/information that is on the screen prior to the movie. They also do not appear to put up with rowdy kids in the theater.
I love this theatre. In the age of cinema megaplexes this is a nice throw back to the age of community movie theatres. The staff is nice, the chairs are fairly comfortable, the price is right and it is never really crowded. They have a coffee shop so you can have a latte or hot chocolate while you watch. My favorite part though is that this cinema gives back to the community in ways that are rare today. They also have a great documentary film festival that brings attention to some little known but really great lower budget films. Please support this theatre, by doing so you support both the local economy and local arts scene.
I have never had a bad experience with this place. I am a teacher and scrambled to set up a field trip the last minute because we had a cancellation. The worker that I spoke with was polite, friendly and very accommodating. They dont try to sell you certain packages and worked with me to get the best price for my students. On a more personal note. I love walking down to Cinema Salem to see a movie. It isnt overly crowded like AMC or Showcase, but still has amazing quality.Keep up the good work Cinema Salem!
I love this place. Old school.
Run down and its in a dirty mall that you can tell the owner doesnt care about. The ceiling has leaks everywhere and the restrooms are filthy
Very nice polite workers
Always a good experience here. The staff are never rude. Why would a business let someone who wasnt their customer use their bathroom? Youre not a customer, youre entitled.
Local cinema that isnt the nicest place around, but its very affordable compared to all the other big movie chains.
Small but awesome. Fresh popcorn. Price is less than other larger cinemas
Great place to see a movie
Awesome popcorn. Seats seemed to be newer.
Great selection of films, staff is 1st rate.
Rude staff? nonsense. best theater around, with the best popcorn. and the projectors and sound have all been brought up to the state of the art. go independent or go home!
Great little movie theater and very reasonably priced
Great theater! The people are wonderful. The popcorn is amazing. Plus, they serve Dr Pepper. What else do you need?
Love this cinema!! I bring my daughter all the time especially love the way the kids movies always stay around matinee times
I love the popcorn. Mmm so good. And how I can take my kids when ever because its not so far away from where I live. And its so less expensive than AMC. The staff are so nice
The theater might be OK for a small place but it needs a huge makeover. I saw Flight there and the color was off from the 1st scene, chairs were missing and the ceiling had a bunch of tiles missing. There was about 10 people in the theater and no one checked your tickets which was strange. I dont disagree with the other reviews support it if you like local theaters, just dont expect a brand new place.
My boyfriend & I go here all thetime & love it! Its a cozy little Theatre with a great staff!
I am not a cinema buff, but this is now my default theater: I wont bother going out and viewing a movie unless its here. Theres a great cafe around the corner, pleasant staff, and excellent popcorn; if you dont demand all the biggest blockbusters - and are willing to wait until the right movie is showing - this is the perfect place.
Since it only had three screens, you cant see every movie that you want to. I would prefer to see movies there, because the smaller, independently owned theaters do a much better job than the big corporations.
A really great local theater that does regular films, independent films and increasingly, live performances. Quite affordable in terms of tickets and snacks. However, the seats can be a bit uncomfortable.
Convenient local place to see first run movies.
Never again. RUDE STAFF. I have been coming here for years!Saw a sign in window for mom and baby movies that peaked my curiosity--went in to inquire about it with 2 kids and an infant. One of the kids had to use the rest room. Attendant blocked them from it. I was shocked! Was told we were not customers. I asked again since what kind of jerk stops a young child from using a restroom. Asked to speak to a manager who offered me the same thing. RUDE. I called them to day to let them know. I have a feeling I spoke to the same manager. My concern was they treat kids so poorly and offer mommy and me movies and kids parties, so one would think. They dont care about their customers and I will be going to the super cinemas with my kids.
Support them. Theyre not your average cineplex. This theater loves movies.
Our favorite movie theater north of Boston.
This is an asset to our city! This theater does great popcorn and staff, with a good mix of independent/foreign and Hollywood films.
Always friendly, usually has a good mix of the latest blockbusters and local work.
Affordable, but not as fancy as the big guys
Its pretty good in there
One of my favorite small theaters. Not a huge mega-plex, but a small old school theater with a good selection of films, concessions that arent on par with dental surgery prices, and a friendly atmosphere.
Close to home great deals welcoming staff.....
A movie theater that you can walk to? Yes please.
Great old theatre, great movie!
Great hometown theater
Love going to this MOVIE HOUSE - and the Popcorn is GREAT!
Great first run movies, indie titles in the Screening Room, and the annual Film Festival. Whats not to love?
Its a great cozy theatre with popular moview and live shows. Food and beverages are expensive though.
Great place to go with friends!!
A bit dated. Needs better chairs
Enjoyed enjoyed enjoyed
Great popcorn
Good Place
Family friendly
I never enjoyed this movie theater, seats are uncomfortable. Should be updated.
Small cozy atmosphere
Bathrooms are gross floors are sticky n dirty and the manager is intolerable another words go somewhere else
