This is a wonderful spot to access the Bosque trails. Going upriver will provide you with some unobstructed views of the river and the Sandia Mountains; going downriver immerses you in the wonders of a uniquely New Mexico Cottonwood forest. These are two early morning views of the Sandias taken while hiking the trails.

Ive been passing through this section for quite a while and for some reason blew past a whole area that I just now found while coming to this trailhead. I was completely missing the section to the right of the parking lot under all the trees. When I was passing through I would always be walking on the paved road, not knowing how to, or even that you could get down there. :) Always a beautiful place to meander under the trees, next to the Rio, with a majestic mountainous view!

The directions arent that great, so you may just want to use Google Maps to navigate to the Vista park, then turn right onto the dirt road immediately past the park. Beautiful views, lots of bird watching, but be careful as there are tons of coyotes in the area. Make sure you wear junk shoes or your good boots as the shoreline gets nice and mucky.

Amazing view from Bernalillo to Albuquerque with Sandia Mountain in the middle and the Rio Grande river below. Apparently this is a popular spot to pick up groups canoeing and kayaking. No facilities or even a port-a-pottty at this location, but lots of private trees.

The best parts were the rugged and wild with glaciers, countless rivers and lakes, majestic mountain peaks, some active volcanoes, and nearly 34,000 miles of tidal shoreline. And the best of them all had to be MT. Denali at 20,320 ft.

It is a beautiful place. Ive been coming here regularly for 6 years. It is magical in the Fall with the yellow cottonood trees. Ive seen it when it was a hidden spot and wed be the only ones there, to when the rains washed it all away and the dirt roads caved in, to when the city rebuilt it, and now where it has gotten so popular its really overrun with people. That is the only reason I docked one star. People dont respect the signs and you get litter and dogs off leash all the time now. So prepare to get licked, get muddy paw prints on you, have your kids bowled over by dogs, or have a ripped shirt from an ill-behaved wandering dog with no owner in sight. That part has been frustrating. If you drive there by the dirt road, it is so narrow, especially on the east side, it should really be one way, but in the fall when the place is packed, you get morons driving the wrong way on the road and its so tight, its scary to pass without falling in the acequia. Please drive on the right side of the acequia and go back on the right side so everyone can be safe. There are trails you can walk and bike on. There is a shallow shore you can wade in the water or fly a kite. Kayaks and rafts can put in here. The accessibility of the water changes a lot and some trails are not available all year because they are under water in the spring or after big rains. Sometimes its nice and sandy, other times muddy. In the Spring and Summer, there are big time mosquitos, so bring repellant. Its an amazing place if people would just respect the land and each other.
