It was beautiful scenery. If you are scared of drowning or water (like I am) i wouldnt necessarily recommend it completely unless you want to give over your fears. Its not that bad though and it is worth it considering the beautiful nature you will see.
Amazing little(long) spot! Heard it was a local favorite and spent an hour trying to find it. When I did I was impressed!
Awesome place thats tucked away from the public. There are some rapids over here that are calming to watch and fun to ride, as well as a calmer area further down thats great for the whole family. Its a tight squeeze to get to any of the beaches, especially if youre there when other people are coming or going, but once youre there the place is just magical.
Went on this walk with my friend and had a fantastic time. This part of the James is lush and green and even has a couple spots to wade in the water or sunbathe.
In the summer it is a great place to swim in the warm calmer areas of the river. Shockoe is an Indian word for the large smooth rocks found here and how the bottom and slip areas got their names. Herons can be seen throughout the spring and summer on the island. Incredibly peaceful escape in the heart of downtown city life.
One of the more notable Richmond sites-to-see, Pipeline walkway provides a very unique walking experience along the top of a sturdy drainage pipe that runs along the James near the lower locks once were. It goes directly underneath the train tracks which are heavily utilized, and Ive seen railroad spikes fall through the cracks as a train passed and slamming into the pipeline before falling in to the river. Just make sure to keep an eye and ear out for passing trains!
Very cool spot! Narrow single-track walking path hovers just over the river, and parts may be covered with water during high-water events. The pipeline passes a heron rookery, so keep your eyes peeled for the great blue heron fishing along the rapids. A small ladder leads down to the pipeline, and parts of the walk have no handrail, so watch your step! Not suitable for very young kids.
I almost want to give this a negative review so that it doesnt get overcrowded. But this is one of my favorite places in Richmond.
The pipeline trail is one of my favorites in the James River Park system. The proximity to the roaring lower James is a thrill and you are likely to see a kayaker or raft paddle the rapids.
Very cool little land mark. Walking ontop of the pipe can be slightly scary when the railings are gone but its fun! Definitely worth a visit when you visit Richmond.
Like this unique walk. Makes you feel like an urban explorer when you drop down on that narrow path under the trestles, passing by some nice James River rapids and waterfowl. What I really enjoyed was being able to walk around Brown Island afterwards, then loop back via the canal walk and take in the street art there.I had plenty of time to then continue on, walking around Shockoe Slip/Bottom which is a great place to just meander around and dip in and out of stores/restaurants/bars at your leisure.
Quiet peaceful place to walk and enjoy
Leads to a great small beach by the river.
I love this run & now to kayak it.
Cool walkway. A little hard to find. Eventually realized you had to walk through a parking lot, along the other side of the flood wall, and then you will find the entrance to the pipeline. Gorgeous views and its a really cool way to repurpose an old pipeline.
Easy to get to and good if you dont have a lot of time but would like to be outdoors for a little while
The James River Pipeline Walkway is something interesting to do. It gives one access to a little beach and other places to go out and see the rapids and check out the scenery of that part of downtown Richmond. The Blue Heron rookery is nearby and lots of those birds hang out down there.
Narrow metallic bridge over the pipes. Is not the wow things to see or to experience.
Not accessible to clumsy or physically impaired people, but a beautiful little secluded area for those who can get there
Ive been saying this is a hidden gem in Richmond for the last six years, and although its become more popular and not so hidden over time, its still a Richmond gem. This is such a beautiful, natural site along the river in downtown Richmond. The only down side is that its not handicap accessible.
I mean what can I say about this place! Definitely a hidden gem in RVA!
Too rocky and shallow to swim. Choose something else.
Awesome spot, love it here
High adventure, walking tour around Riverfront Canal area led me to this area by accident. I arrived with several people, I described what I was looking for. They confirmed the location. You wont find this long name spelled out. I walked the rails, didnt quite trust my balance over the Pipeline that crosses over to Browns Island. I will return after some balance training, maybe.
Apparently the City of Richmond doesnt worry too much about frivolous lawsuits so they can have neat stuff like this. Cool spot.
There are many great spots to louse around the water and hidden senre.
Its a cute little walkway on top of a pipe.
Awesome hidden trail if I was not paying attention Id never have walked it
Love this place but I wish people wouldnt constantly fill it with trash.
Beautiful stop in the city that gives you a tropical paradise feel
Good fishing spot early in the morning. Other than that it’s a bunch of VCU kids who were never taught how to clean up after themselves.
Really nice, but a bit hard to get to. So ok physical is required to get all the way down to the water.
One of my favorite spots in Richmond.
Great place to explore the river and the waterfront from an unexpected vantage point.
Great time! Its worth the walk
This place is great, climbing, running, biking anything you want
Short walk where you can get close to the James River. Interesting place to go and explore after the James gets to flood stage.
Took our grandson there and he loved it!
Amazing gem to walk down in the middle of Richmond
Beautiful, almost hidden short hike in the city. Great way to see the James up close.
Herons were nesting. Beautiful day.
Pipeline is a beautiful area. But get there early the good spots fill up fast.
Wanted a place to share an adventure with my daughter and this fit the bill..next time we will be prepared to go swimming.
Whitewater playground spot!
Cant find a better spot on the river. Such a pretty spot
A nice metal trail on a pipe line
Scary but a fun way to explore the James!
First time there. Always something new to find and Robin Richmond
A nice scenic adventurous walk through time and nature. It gives you the City, the Pipelines and the James River.
Amazing views of the river, rock climing rappelling, its just so much fun. Bring the family and your pets.
Beautiful
Love how clean and easy it is
