I recently discovered that my great great great uncle died here from disease. I read about the hospital and thought I would go visit it one day. Had to go to Richmond and just happened to pass this and HAD to stop. I plan to come back with my sister and actually see and learn the full history. I look forward to adding to this review. (Government shutdown was in full force so I couldnt go in)
The tour guide was excellent. I saw the pistol of the Company Surgeon that wrote my Greatx3 Grandfather a medical discharge for being worn out as a soldier 31st Virginia Infantry. Nice little museum. Still the site of the worlds largest hospital of all times recorded.
It’s a nice park with great views. The medical museum is really interesting. It’s packed with stuff and well laid out with lots of information. The people that work there are very nice and know a lot. It gives you an appreciation for what they went through in the Civil War and definitely makes you grateful for modern medicine.
Get to learn as much about history as possible. Kids need to learn it. Great old neighborhood
Toured the museum which was quite interesting. Found a lovely book selection. Its amazing how far weve come in the practice of medicine.
The museum is small, a bit repetitive, and one of the staff is a bit pushy to watch the film. But it is free. Decent amount of interesting things. Good way to spend a few hours on a rainy day
Very small little museum. Nicely done. Informative flim. No cost.
We had a nice visit. We put lunch in cooler and planned a long day. Visited many parks in the week. Took lots of photos and took our sweet time touring. The Rangers were well informed. Answered every question the children had. They did enjoy the Hospital and all the Ranger had to offer. Thanks
Informative staff and exhibits. Free entry. Would recommend
Great visit. Helpful staff.
Beautiful views and very educational and interesting. Definitely will return.
Its a small museum and probably wont take you much time, but theres a great film and some nice artifacts on display. I think the best part is the large table diorama of the surrounding land and hospital as it had been in the 1860s. Took away one star because the rangers on duty arent always very welcoming. It depends who is on shift, but sometimes they just sit and stare at you without any greeting or effort to be friendly.
Cute little museum in a lovely park. Its not big - the museum itself takes up one room, but its informative about Civil War medicine and its practitioners. The film they show was of good quality, on par with a lot of other Civil War sites in Virginia. The museum attendant was incredibly well-informed and another, probably too-untapped, source of information. Would recommend dropping by and then taking a walk around the park.
Very interesting place. I just happened on it in my exploration of Richmond
This was a great place to visit in the past. Now it has not been maintained.
Cool. The video was interesting. I had no idea how huge that facility once was. If you live on RVA you need to stop in. Make a small donation too.
My love and I said I do here April 22! Beautiful scenery!
Nice, great view clean place. I love it here.
Always enjoy visiting this location and seeing the artifacts
One of my favorite stops on a ride coming back from Florida.Excellent information from staff! I loved walking around the grounds.
A very fascinating museum that helps you see the Civil War in a different way. Amazing photos and artifacts. Worth a trip to Church Hill to see what the city used to look like and to see period medical instruments.
Small museum with a very interesting film.
Small but interesting-as much for the small displays as for the history of the building and surrounding land. Super nice and knowledgeable docent.
It a beautiful place inside and real nice people work their
Very knowledgeable and friendly On Site Rangers. Awesome artifacts (not as much, compared to other visitors centers) Highlight of museum is the immaculate diorama.
A fascinating and very unusual museum covering a subject rarely touched on elsewhere. The subject of the wounding of soldiers and their subsequent treatment is rarely covered in the historical documentation of the civil war. This museum shows 2hat happened in the South and talks about what happened in the North. A must see.
This was a very nice area for being down town. The museum was very educational. Learned somethings that I didnt know. Recommend to those who like that time frame.
It was so fun to go to great employees
Thank you for such a lovely place!
Very informative- great if you love civil war history
Great history about Medical care and surgeries on the Civil war battle field and the men and women and free-slaves who contributed thier skills.
Nice park but I did not come to see the park
Great spot to visit. Easy accessibility.
Small museum in the to of a hill. Nice small park to walk around with good views of the city.
Learn a lot about the Chimborazo general hospital, largest confederate hospital of the civil war. It was ran by Dr. James McCaw and treated 75,000 solders. Ask for bill he is a volunteer he will tell you amazing stories. :)
Unbelievable medical care given to all those in the civil war. Sobering site when you look around and are told every structure was a hospital.
Beautiful, park-like grounds, nice collection in main building, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Cool little museum about the siege of Richmond and the large Confederate hospital that used to occupy the site
A different take on Civil War parks. It was good to see the war from the medical care perspective.
It’s free so that is nice
Numerous knowledgeable rangers!
Very informative.
The medical museum will interest all those history buffs who would want to learn more about the civil war medicinal history, the fact that the museum is inside the chimborazo park means youve ample.open spaces outside the museum
I work here so kinda biased
