This was a great experience for me. Im an English major, so Im in love with Poe. This place is very interesting in the end please are very friendly and kind. There are three buildings you visit. The group consists of about six people, but you explore at your own pace, which is really nice. You can buy tickets online or in person. There are hand sanitizers everywhere, so no worries there :) Oh yes, and the parking is in the back, its a small parking lot, it fits maybe up to seven cars, but there is also street parking and a parking garage nearby. Also the prices in the gift shop are very reasonable. I would definitely recommend going there!
This is a great museum to check out, and it’s not overpriced.Went there on a whim and got tickets on the spot, they currently do every half-hour tickets due to COVID, and sanitize to keep themselves and the public safe. You can take a tour through three buildings and learn about Poe and his life. There are also two adorable cats that hang around that love to follow you around. And they have museum parking.Any literature buffs would love this spot!
This was a great museum . It had three buildings complete with very cool, historical artifacts from the time. They also had free audio that played during the tour. If you are in the area, it is a wonderful visit. They also have two residents cats named Pluto and Edgar. They also have great artwork in the neighborhood leading up to the area. There is street parking available within walking distance.
Visited the Poe Museum today. Groups of about 6 may enter the 3 buildings that comprise the museum as each building is not very large. No backtracking. Bldgs are cleaned after each group. While we waited our tour, we walked the garden in the rain. There was a pumpkin contest in process. Bldgs have items, memorabilia and information of Poes early, middle and late life - including one life-size plaster figure of Poe. Also quite a bit of theories and speculation regarding his death.
I bought the membership and it’s worth it. It’s a small museum and of course they are up to date with Covid regulation. Sanitation stations in each visitor sections. The library area is closed, but if you call for Chris he will set up a tour section for you. It was fascinating to see additional displays and historical information. And of course the cats, Edgar and Pluto are there too!
Coming here is a great experience, and its a nice place to relax and study. Ive donated some items here and your shop is impressive! Very Richmond, much love. I would like to thank you guys for giving me such good memories of this place, it was one of the last places my partner and I went before she passed away.
I was really impressed by this little museum. It is packed full of really cool and interesting stuff from Poe’s life. There’s a lot to read and learn about Poe here. The actual property is nice too. The buildings are from around Poe’s time and there is a pretty garden area in the middle with a fountain. I would recommend this to anyone going to Richmond or even to visit Richmond just for this museum
An incredible and affordable mini museum! The museum is spread throughout three small buildings surrounding a poe-esque courtyard. Took around 45 minutes to go fully through and read everything. Had two friendly black cats wandering around the courtyard and buildings which I absolutely loved. Social distancing procedures were in order with scheduled visit times and masks were mandatory to be worn, as well as limits on number of people in each building which is greatly appreciated. There is a very neat gift shop as well.
Very nice gift shop. Lots of things to look at. So much info, and an optional audio tour. Loved it!
So much information on this amazing man. The museum covers all parts of Poes life. The entrance fee is very reasonable. The gift shop has so many interesting things. Customer service is great.
I can only speak to the transaction I had with The Poe Museum regarding the online store. I felt that they were prompt in trying to correct a problem but a little condescending when I mentioned how much shipping was charged to my card, but my purchase was refunded very promptly. The merchandise isnt cheaply made, its cute and must-have souvenirs for Poe fans. The employees (in all fairness) werent given much to work with from my husband as they were given the wrong phone number, emails werent checked (on my husbands end), no follow up on problems (again, on my husbands end). All in all, Im sure anyone who deals with them will be pleased.
The museum is set inside three rooms, which themselves are historic buildings. As you walk, you progress through Poes life - childhood, adulthood, and his mysterious death. We easily visited in an hour, once our time slot was announced. While we toured, I noticed the staff cleaning high contact surfaces, twice.
Attended a birthday party for 2 sweet 16 girls just before Halloween. Everyone dressed in period clothing, it was so much fun, and the girls were thrilled!
Quirky, museum full of history & facts about Poe and those around him. The buildings are connected by lovely gardens, and you may get a sweet visit from one of the resident cats.
Learned so much about Poe that I dont feel is common knowledge! Loved the audio that goes along with the tour.
A fun find in Richmond. Learn about Edgar Allen Poe and various members of his family. It is a self-guiided tour through 3 buildings. You read and move at your own pace.
Really enjoyed the museum. Learned a lot during my visit. The garden is beautiful and loved that there are two black cats wandering about
I love that there are different buildings to self navigate through. Very cool sit down library with local raven art on the walls. Cute resident cats, nice staff, and lots of interesting things about Edgar A. Poe to learn here.
So interesting, so facinating.Haunting and I wonder even more now.
Very friendly staff, small but interesting. Good way to spend a morning. Interesting facts around every corner.
Spookily adorable! Loads of information about our dear Poe and his life. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the cats that reside there.
If you love history and poetry. Especially American Poetry written by Edgar Allen Poe this is the place for you....its a quaint building but has a very eclectic collection of Poe relics, art, and history. Awesome place. Very cool spot. A must see.
This is honestly my favorite place Ive been in Virginia. I love it and everything about it!
The Edgar Allan Poe Museum is a wonderful place to to visit while in Richmond. You will learn a lot of information about Edgar Allen Poe and see a lot of original works from him. There are two Black Cats that live on the grounds there that are extremely friendly. The gift shop here is small but has a lot of raven items here. The staff here are extremely friendly and very knowledgeable.
One of my favorite museums and one of the best places to go in Richmond. They have an extensive collection and the grounds are peaceful and gorgeous. The staff is wonderful and were super accommodating.
I went to the museum about two years ago, I told my family how amazing I thought it was. Recently moving back to Virginia, I had family come down to go. Well it was a huge disappointment, you could only go on the main floor not the upstairs as the sign stated. However my frustration comes from the employee telling me that they turned the upstairs to offices but again the signs state to view upstairs by appointment only. On the website said nothing about the second floor being closed. Huge disappointment, ten to fifteen minute walk through, had eight people not worth the money they charged, also I don’t appreciate being lied to.
If you like Edgar Allen Poe, then the place is fantastic! Lots of history about EAP, learned lots of things I didnt know about him. They have quite of bit of his old items. Built around the oldest stone manor in Richmond, they do a good job of spacing the area out. If your lucky like we were you may even get to pet Edgar and Pluto the black cats of the manor.
Very informative with many artifacts to see.
Very accessible and interesting for adults and grade school children who like to read. Its not very big, but had some really nice historical relevance to the city of Richmond. Although, it is not a Poe residence, it really feels appropriate for the purpose, especially since he spent a significant amount of his life in Richmond. The staff are very friendly and helpful. You can easily complete the entire tour within an hour, and spend extra time reading in the library, and enjoying the courtyard.
This museum was so cool. Diamond in the ruff and one of the top places that my Girl Scout Troop had on their must see list. We were even able to buy our tickets online ahead of time. If you go you also need to check out their two cats who live on site.
Full of Information and beautiful grounds with a beautiful garden and 2 kitties edgar and pluto (only Pluto is featured in the photos edgar seemed to be very uninterested in our presence.
This was a beautiful short stop. Very informative, very cramped, through no fault of the places own. Just a lot of information, but we never felt rushed. There were some guided tours, but we opted for a self tour. The only reason I give this a four is it was really short.
Great collection of Poe items. Beautiful grounds.
What a beautiful museum. Very informative.
A very nice small museum! Im sure its lovely in the spring time with all the different plants. I would say you need to have an interest in Poe to visit as you will learn A LOT about him and his life. My visit was fun until the place swarmed with secret service.
We had an excellent time! Edgar and Pluto the cats were a wonderful welcome to the gardens. We learned alot as well!
Great staff, great experience, great opportunity to learn more about one of the most influential and insightful writers the world has known.
Very nice little museum lots of Poe artifacts and snippets of information about his life that one may not necessarily learn elsewhere. Definitely paints a different picture than our 6th grade English textbooks. If you enjoy his many works, this is a great place to pay homage to one of Americas great authors!
WOW! I was absolutely blown away by how much I learned about Edgar Allan Poe. The museum is really very cool. It is broken down into four buildings which at 1st I found strange but it flows nicely starting with where he was born, to how he became a writer, how his stories and poems influenced the world and the last building details how he might have died. In one of the buildings youll find a wall full of paintings that are dedicated to Edgar Allan Poes famous poem, The Raven. The museum also houses two black cats that freely roam around the grounds, a coffin you can take a picture in, statues of Edgar Allan Poe, beautiful water fountains, a garden and of course a gift shop that has some unique finds. Its a wonderful place to spend an afternoon by yourself or with kids.Note parking is free but the lot is small so you may want to get there early. You can get a discount on museum tickets if you have a AAA card. Food isnt sold here.
Been here several times. I love it. I feel like Poe is one of the most underrated authors ever. His contributions to various genres is unparalleled. This museum, tucked away in Richmond’s oldest residence, attempts to capture the scope of his contribution and breadth of his talent, combined with the mystery of his death.
Very interesting, $9 felt a little steep, but still felt worth it afterwards. You can do a guided tour or explore the area on your own. Lots of interesting facts! And an adorable kitty roaming around
Do you like Edgar Allen Poe? Do you like poetry? Do you like suspense? Do you like horror? Do you like history? If yes, you will love it. Pick up a book if you dare from the gift shop. Also a Pokémon stop (side note). You can get through depending upon your reading speed in 1 hour.
Amazing little museum with a ton of information on Poe. Had no idea this was just down the street from me. Learned a lot. The garden was the best part. So beautiful and theres a cute black cat that roams around and will let you pet if you approach nicely. Came here for free as part of Time Travelers Weekend.
Self-guided tour. Beautiful garden, complete with 2 black cats! Many personal artifacts, art pieces, detailed stories, interactive exhibit. Unique experience, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Poe!
Small but interesting museum, staff was knowledgeable and answered all questions Poe. Self guided tour was short, if you ready everything it’s a little over an hour but don’t let that deter you... the museum has a lot of useful information and the largest collection of Poe owned artifacts. The gift shop has really interesting prints, bags, cups, books and other trinkets. Do yourself a favor and enjoy one of the oldest standing buildings in Richmond!
Very cool little Museum, I had a great time so did my Fiance. The only reason im giving this 4 instead of 5 is because the experience is very short, we took photos and read everything we could on display and we were still there for only 1 hour, the ticket price was reasonable at $8 and military is free. It is worth checking it out, very interesting and informative about Poes life and death. Definitely worth checking out.
My girls and I loved this museum. The staff and grounds were amazing. The grounds has significant historical clout and should be commemorated for generations to come.
Awesome and quaint. Very informative. Military friendly. Free parking in small lot.
A great stop for anyone who is interested in the life of Edgar Allen Poe. A wonderful selection of artifacts from his life are sprawled along the tour. A great reading room with my books based on his works. Affordable and worth the expirense.
Nice little stop for horror and mystery enthusiasts. There is a garden, small library, gift shop and museum on the property. Its not really a spooky thing, more educational. Die hard fans can leave a note or poem for Edgar. There is a shrine. But mostly its a collection of historical items that have been saved from his houses or work before the buildings were destroyed.
I learned a lot here. And loved the two cats that roam the grounds. The art work is amazing.
This is well worth the money! We went on one of the guided tours, I cant remember what the guides name was, but my husband said he thinks it was David. He was absolutely amazing! I LOVE Edgar Allan Poe, but this man told me things even I didnt know. You could tell he really loves his job, and he was extremely knowledgeable. I would definitely pay to go again, it was that good. The museum cats are so friendly and nice also, we loved them
Small museum but worth the small admission charge. I discovered a lot more about Poe than I ever learned before. The reading room on the second floor of the main building was nice, it would have been nice to have been able to sit down and read but too much traffic in a cramped space. But very well put together exhibits and artifacts
A charming little getaway, the poe museum functions both as a reflection the life of one of the great American authors and the historical landscape of the city of Richmond itself. It also has the best live in mascots of all time, though it may be prudent to stay away if you have cat allergies
Very fun experience. The museum has managed to cobble together quite a collection of odds and ends from Poes life, such as his childhood bed, despite the home he lived in as a child having been destroyed many years ago. You could breeze through in half an hour, or you could stay much longer enjoying Poes works in the reading room. I loved the live reading of The Raven in the enchanted garden. Very fun, creepy little place, definitely worth a visit.
The Edgar Allen Poe Museum is a great Richmond stop. The location is right near downtown Richmond. The museum is in the oldest house in RichmondFree parkingAffordable ticketsBeautiful enchanted gardenGreat layout of three different buildings to explore and experienceFun fact: you can catch unhappy hour on Friday’s#PapstPath
Quaint museum perfect for all the Poe knowledge you could need!
Poetic. I have been a fan of Edgar Allan Poe since I was a little boy. I came to Richmond unaware of the museum here in his honor. What a treat!! First, folks, this is a right-sized museum. Not too big and not too small. Prices are very affordable and getting here from our downtown hotel was an easy but slightly long walk. Too many cool details to describe, but having a black cat strolling through the garden could only have been topped by a raven.
Im a native Baltimorean living in Virginia for 3 years and decided my 50th birthday trip would be finally going to see the Poe Museum since its a huge part of my life. Many visits to the Poe House in Baltimore starting at 10 years old for a book report and Poes burial place at Westminster Churchyard and Burial Grounds is always a big to do at Halloween and at Eddies birthday. My brother and I were born in the hospital he died in and our middle names are Edgar and Virginia. Such an amazing collection! Fittingly, Pluto led us into the last building. Im a huge ailurophile. Gorgeous artwork and a real feeling of Eddies presence. I plan to come back for some souvenirs and more visits, especially Unhappy Hour.
Just happened to be walking by while they were celebrating Poes 210th birthday. What an awesome time!
Small but interesting! Beautiful garden.
What an awesome collection on Edgar Allan Poe. The guided tour is fabulous!
A great way to spend time in Richmond. The museum is housed in 3 separate buildings. There is an enclosed garden. Learned new things about Poe.
Awesome experience, getting to know a bit better my favorite author
My friend and I have been wanting to come to the EAP Museum for over a year and sadly to say, we were a bit disappointed. Im not sure if it was because of the birthday bash and ongoing renovations, but I dont feel like we had the experience we were expecting. For an $8.00 admission I had anticipated to see more than what was available. There may have been an oversight on our part with the details of the museum but we were able to walk the entire grounds in 30 minutes or so. Parts of the museum were nice, but sadly I dont feel like the entire experience would be worth another visit in the future.
An amazing treasure. No review can do it justice. Captures the essence of Poe in a small dark complex of ancient buildings that houses a wealth of information and artifacts. A bucket list, must see for Poe fans.
Edgar Allan Poe Museum allows you to follow Edgar Allan Poe from a young child, through his life and death. The tour guide does a fantastic reading of an Edgar Allan Poe story. His poetry and stories were used to make movies. Plan on spending couple hours touring the complex.
Quirky quick and interesting. $ 8 dollars for adults. Took about a half hour. The black cats are awesome.
Interesting museum with a lot of fun poe facts. There are 2 cats on property as well who are very affectionate. If you are interested in Poe check out this museum
This was very insightful, I didnt know much about him and I thought this would be a good way to kinda learn. The tour guide was amazing, entertaining, and very descriptive. The exhibits had a lot of originals and definitely explained his story from beginning to end.
Cool museum and courtyard. They have some fun events. Especially around Halloween. I know someone that had their wedding here. Went to a few “Unhappy Hours” when I lived near there. Always a good time. There are cats that live there in the courtyard. The gift shop is awesome. Lots of cool and funny items. I would stop by just for the gift shop.
I was only in Richmond for 24 hours a couple weeks ago and had only a few hours to spare before heading home. I decided to visit here. The staff were friendly, though really, the only person I interacted with was the greeter in the lobby/gift shop. It wasn’t crowded when I went in on a weekday afternoon and I was able to enjoy the entire museum in about 2 hours. I learned quite a bit, too. If you’re in Richmond and looking for something to do, just go. You’ll enjoy it.
It was really nice to go at our own pace as this is a completely self guided tour. The two resident cats are so sweet and friendly. Highly recommended!
If youre a Poe fan, or interested in learning about the man behind his well-known works, this museum is highly educational.
Interesting and historic museum. Somewhat spooky with black cats roaming around and creaky doors on every old building and room.
It was amazing! Beautiful and very well kept! The cats, Edgar and Pluto made it even more realistic!
Cool museum!! Very interesting
The Edgar Allan Poe Museum is educational and informative. It is well done as you learn about the life of Poe and his literary career. There is a library and reading room, and black cats in the courtyard.
If you are into Poe, then this is the place for you. Personally, Im not so I guess my review is slightly biased. They have 2 cats on the property so if you have a cat allergy, be careful.
Edgar Allen Poe museum. Well done museum. Cool grounds. Very informative. Worth the trip. Can be a short visit or longer. Great gift shop.
I was greeted by two black cats and given such a magical tour! Great exhibits and a laid back atmosphere! If you’re in Richmond area, this is a great stop for an afternoon trip.
What a cool find! Especially if you are a Poe enthusiast! Neat set up, different buildings in use to tell each portion of his life. Nice little reading room and gift shop, even two black cats wandering the courtyard that say hello! Small parking lot on side of building that blessedly free, too!
What was supposed to be free parking was completely full the entire time we were there so ended up parking blocks away and walking. After arriving, wish I had kept walking elsewhere, since prices were steep for the limited displays. Seemed like the small gift shop and ticket area where the largest area of this museum and all the other buildings were very close quarters!
After having to read many Poe books in school it was interesting to learn more about the man.Two residents Pluto and Edgar following along.
Nice little museum and gift shop. Dont miss if a Poe fan. Cats were awesome.
Did not know much about Poes life and even that he lived so much of his life in Virginia. Really enjoyed our visit there.
Wealth of history, artifacts, and mystery! A must for fans!
Worth a stop. The buildings and artifacts were unique and kept us engaged for almost an hour. Not recalling all of Poes life story before our visit made it an education as well. Be sure and pet the kitties!
It was full price when the cut half of the museum off, we payed 30 dollars to par a car and walk through some doors
This will forever be one of my favorite places in the planet.
Great artifacts and information. My daughter who was 14 loved going to all the rooms/ houses seeing and reading everything. Kinda pricy and we were only there about an hour.
The woman at the front desk was sweet as pie. You could tell she was really passionate about what she did. The artifacts were great, but the well written facts throughout the museum stole the show. I hadnt realized Poe was such a player! Haha.Military gets in for free, also.
Intimate but fascinating museum that can be done in under an hour. Its worth visiting the shop to pick up info about their programs, including a weekly Unhappy Hour.
Pretty cool place with actual artifacts and two awesome black cats
A quaint spot, perfect for a lazy afternoon. There are a few out buildings with artifacts and legends to tempt the mind. With the few pence for entrance.
What a well done museum! I learned many facts about Poe that I did not know previously. Every artifact has a description which is appreciated. The layout of the museum is also done very well. The old building is a perfect location and just adds to the oddities that is Poe. Oh & of course, black cats... I definitely recommend to anyone.
Great place to visit for history on Poe. They have some actual artifacts from his childhood and his adult work. Plus some cool and interesting details about his life and death. Altogether great for a fan, either avid or casual.
Let me start this by stating, I LOVE EDGAR ALLAN POE. If Edgar Allan Poe were running a race, Id be a the finish line with my big glittery GO EDGAR ALLAN POE sign and probably even a matching t-shirt. I wrote my college thesis on Poe, Ive read countless stories, and have always been an admirer. So with that said, here are my thoughts on The Poe Museum: It was a little smaller than I thought (or maybe than I had hoped for) but the person I went with couldnt believe that I expected them to have any more stuff than they did. The things that they did have were really cool though (vest, socks, desk, chair, bed, etc) The buildings were pretty cool - old with lots of charm. The courtyard was definitely a huge selling point, it was absolutely gorgeous and I can see why The Poe Museum is a popular wedding spot.
It was smaller than I thought. I wouldnt take my young kids there but we enjoyed looking at everything.
