There is a new parking area ensuring that you do not have to park along side of the highway. The hike to the overlook is easy enough for two and three year olds. Be sure to take water enough for everyone.The views of the Stratobowl are unobstructed. There are story stones placed near the overlook explaining the significance of the location and history of the launch of the first hot air balloon.Finally, the views of the hills is spectacular! You will be glad you went!

This is an outstanding place to visit. Not marked on the hwy but find trail on Google maps. About 1/4-1/2 hike to overlook. Amazing view. Check out history at stratobowl.com. I go on hot air balloon launch mid Sept. Happens every yr.

Classic trail close to Rapid City. Well traveled by locals, starts very average along and old forest service road but then reveals a beautiful view for a short easy hike. Probably our most consistently repeated trail.

This is a fascinating historical point in Rapid City. We hiked to the scenic overlook early one morning in the dark to witness a balloon launch with many others. Parking was ok, lot was quite full but we parked on side of highemway. Trail was an easy hike even in the dark; we had brought flashlight and carried chairs, not knowing what to expect. Ar sunruse we could see the view down int the bowl which was quite large and impressive . Unfortunately, the wind prevented the launch but we were glad we had gone. On our next hike we will know exactly what to expect. Wear good hiking shoes, take water. Cellbphone reception good.
