This is a must stop in rapid City. This is a family owned business that works hard to earn your supportThe old town displays are interesting, but the fact that the owner talks to you and tells stories how this started is a true American success story. After we were seated for the dinner show, we were told how the meal would be served. We didnt realize at the time that the band members were the ones that were guiding the people through the serving line. The fact that they were not above doing that is what impressed us. Having a farm ourselves, your reminded us that everyone pitched in and did every job to get things done. Are you paying attention Hollywood? The music was very entertaining and was a wide range of music from all types and all years. The band sounded great and really enjoyed their job. Visit this place, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Booked the supper and show on a whim because we thought our kids would enjoy. I had no idea what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised! They tell you to arrive around 5, but thats mainly so youll walk around the old west town, view the Dances with Wolves items (which turns out arent really that authentic) and buy things. I found that part to be a bit cheesy and our kids got bored quickly. They let you in for the show at 6:15 and everything after that was awesome. The food was very good and they have a great system for getting everyone through quickly. I didnt expect my picky kids to eat anything but they actually enjoyed some of the food too!The show was the best part. The band is very professional and talented and we had a blast singing along. They do a great job of getting the audience involved. Its just the right length too - a little over an hour. Any longer and our kids would have gotten restless. This was one of the highlights of the trip for me!
Great dinner & excellent show! The band played something for everyone and was great at involving the crowd. It was a lot of fun! The musicians were very talented!!! I will definitely be back! My husband had the beef, I had the chicken and both were good. After trying his, I personally liked the chicken a bit better. My husband and I even returned for the .99 cent pancakes.
The whole family loved the gift shop and blacksmith shop. Herman (owner?) has some great stories! The food was better than expected based off reviews but is the standard fare for these types of things. You cant go wrong with live music and the service was excellent. Would definitely recommend.
Chuckwagon Supper - A great evening with old day Cowboy food and great entertainment. Musicians played all the classics from the 1920s cowboy songs to modern rock. Violinist was impressive. Also a fantastic Willie Nelson impression. Only criticism, hard benches, but that is what the cowboys had and its all about the atmosphere. Arrive early, get the good seats.
Is the food great? No, no its not. The biscuits are just above tack and the chicken was weird. However, the band was fantastic! I havent heard my son laugh that hard ever (11) andy other 3 kiddos sang, clapped and cheered along. Hubby and I loved it. All in all it was good family fun! No ears or eyes to cover just relax and enjoy!
This is a must if you are in the Black Hills!! My family and I had a blast. Go early to check out everything...The Dances With Wolves scene set, the old town store fronts and gift shop. Our food was delicious but the best part, THE BEST part was the awesome entertainment. Talented and fun musicians! I didnt want it to end!!
They need to update their website. Its says open but I called and was told oh no we are closed untill mothers day . My advice dont have a website that says ur open, if your closed duh!!!
Loved the price of the pancakes, and yeah they really are all you can eat for $1 and it was a 10 size cake! . All the other food options are delicious and worth the extra money. The pancake batter is sweeter than most and almost doesnt need any syrup. The room was a rustic space with wooden bench style seats and cafeteria style seating.
99c all you can eat pancakes! Great pancakes. Would be nice if they offered jam to go with the syrup but hey its 99c
Food was good and plentiful! Show pretty good but felt they rushed it.. Midway thru our meal(we were one the last) They ran around picking up honey, sauce, salt and pepper etc... Maybe cause we were late in season but did not see demonstrations. Also napkins and silverware all in bucket and other people picking through and not wrapped sets.. It would bug me precovid! Overall nice...
We attended this chuckwagon supper and show Tuesday, July 21st. We were impressed with the show and really enjoyed it. My family was extremely disappointed with a joke by the fiddler of the group that referred to the banjo player needing a handicap sticker. Especially with the main singer being a retired school teacher I would think jokes about the special needs population wouldnt be tolerated.Again - we were impressed with the quality of the music just wouldnt want distasteful jokes leave out a whole population and their families that might enjoy attending your show.
Great pancakes! Wonderful bacon and sausages. Fun location with a great gift shop and plenty of photo ops.
The dinner is just ok but its a cowboy dinner served on a tin plate. The show was very enjoyable and there is a lot of interesting things to see as you walk around outside. Its go again even though dinner wasnt great
What a blast! Most the audience just came for the dinner & show. For me and many others it was a Fantastic end to the full day Black Hills tour. Show was all ages appropriate and the kids enjoyed it. Even if they werent familiar with classic rock & modern country music.
Great entertainment for the whole family! Even the five year old in it group had fun.Beef meal rocked my tastebuds!Would love to go back for the musical entertainment.
Third time going here for the all you can eat pancakes! It was awesome every time we go. Great service, cheap breakfast, great atmosphere!
Breakfast was not the BEST Ive ever had (sausage was burned, gravy was either a mix or out of a can with no additional seasoning) but the tour was awesome. Saw Mount Rushmore/Custer State Park/Needles Highway/Crazy Horse Memorial. The trip up Needles highway was amazing and going through the Eye of the Needle was nail biting in a bus! Our tour guide made it even more fun. as we watched the faces of people on the other end. Lol! Be sure and take some crackers to feed the chipmunks at the top... friendly little guys!
Food they took right out of the warmer was cold. We had 12 people in our party and no one finished their food. Grew up going here every year and loved it, and wanted to let my kids experience it and they did not like it.
They tell you to show up at 5:30 but you dont actually need to get there until 6:10-ish. It is a little run down. We booked our tickets way ahead of time in the front row. Someone who showed up and bit there tickets on site got our seats though because they double booked. We went to the ticket both to figure it out and they ended up putting us in the back and doing nothing else about it like a small refund or anything. Personally I think that is just part of a 5 star rating. It was also extremely hot inside witch ultimately caused us to leave. We asked for a refund and because we did it through our workplace they said they wouldnt refund it. Definitely would not recommend
The food is great and the show was wonderful. We all enjoyed singing along!
Excellent place for breakfast. The Chuckwagon dinner is a wonderful experience as well. Worth the stop just to look around.
Went for the chuck wagon dinner & show. The dinner is good and it was fun eating off a tin plate. The show was engaging & entertaining. For those reading in July/Aug 2020, masks are not required. They will also be opening a new rollercoaster type ride called Buffalo Hunt soon. Its slated to open Aug 2020. I recommend this place for some good family oriented fun.
Always a great stop for breakfast and good service! Plus a cool place to check out if youve never been there before!
Dinner was good the entertainment was the best especially singing God Bless America at the end. Brought tears to my eyes
Biscuits and gravy were hard and tasted burnt. The sausages were burnt. Pancakes were good.
Great food. Service very well organized. Show was fantastic
Loved it! Especially the Dances with wolves memorabilia, & pictures! Old buildings also
Great dinner and show. The props and shops were interesting.
This was an awesome show.. the band was fabulous, the food was yummy and the staff was beyond polite.. highly recommend when your in Rapid City
Real old west feel...lots of fun. Herman and Clint are very kind. Will definitely visit again next time Im in town!
The BEST way to visit Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park and sn excellent fun show...food is ok nothing great but sitting back and letting someone else do the drive is so worth it.
Lots to Fort Hays, kids ages: 11, 9, 6, 5:* 9 & 6 year old got to make rope and keep it* They were not making tin plates that evening* There is geode breaking and rock shop, a bit on the higher end, but breaking geode was fun.* $0.99 pancakes were okay, made earlier and a bit dry, would not go to breakfast again* Dinner was alright, tin lemonade was amazing and spice cake.Note: Line moved fast for dinner we were one of the last, but got food within 15 minutes.* Show was fun, could use 1-2 more songs to get the kids moving along.* Lady on violin/fiddle was awesome.
What a great tour. We pre purchase lunch so all three meals were included. Ken our driver was amazing and humorous. Started with Rushmore then toured the Black hills and Custard park. Ended the tour with Crazy Horse and then back to Fort Hayes for dinner and a show. Fantastic Day. Highly recommend this tour.
99 cent all you can eat Pancakes and the cutest little Western Town.
Went there the last weekend before their season ended, and they must have been stretching supplies because there were no paper towels in the ladies room, no soap in the mens room, and the area where the show takes place was not heated well at all. There were also several shops outside that should have been opened, but were not. We ended up leaving before the food and show because the lack of sanitary conditions in the restrooms was a shop stopper for us. The seating was sketchy too. We were in 14/15/16 which were all fine If you are on the edge between picnic tables, its super tight. Ill attach pictures to this review showing seats 12/13 and 18/19 as examples. Take seat 13 as en example. You would have to be a small child to fit in 12 or 13. If you are an adult, your only chance is to straddle the table leg and encroach into seat 14. The other side of the picnic tables face away from the stage too, so you would have to be turning around to eat and watch the show. Having said all of this negative, let me say that there was one huge bright spot..RATTLESNAKE RANDY and the blacksmith. Both were engaging and joked it up with my 9 yr old son which really made for an enjoyable stop. We had just finished visiting Big Thunder before going to Fort Hays, but Rattlesnake Randy has a panning station here at Fort Hays that probably would have been just as enjoyable. In summary, 2 stars for the chuck wagon, but 5 start for Randy, the blacksmith...oh and the lady at the shop with the jewelry. All 3 were very nice.
Great show!! Entertainment is very good. The food....wish I had better things to say.
The food was great and the show had something for the whole family.
$0.99 pancakes! Cant beat this price. Cute decor too
The staff was so nice and friendly to my family...one of the staff memeber took the time to make a toilet paper rope for my kids...they thought it was the best... it is a great place for the whole family....we did the day long tour and it was great just wished we had a bit more time at Mt. Rushmore and CrazyHorse (we felt a little rushed)...the bus driver Rory was great with lots of info about the area....the show at the end of night was a great way to end the day
Great breakfast. Cool stores and movie props.
This was a great place to eat and the show was entertaining. They have BBQ chicken and roast beef. The lemonade was also good.
A great night of entertainment. The food was really good and served chuckwagon style, in one tin pan. Roast or chicken, beans, applesauce, a baked potato, roll and a dessert. They fit a lot of people in the place, but the line for dinner moved quickly. The singers very great as well. They sang a variety of songs, some very old, classic rock, and current stuff. The fiddle player was finominal! Highly recommend!
The 99¢ all you can eat pancakes are REALLY good as well as the coffee. You dont go for the food at the Chuckwagon Supper, you go for the Show! Gives you an idea how the cowboys ate on a cattle drive. The talented musicians provide a lively family friendly show too that is well worth it!Hang around and tour the grounds where part of the movie Dances With Wolves was filmed.
A really fun evening. The band is stellar
Music was o.k. Food could have been betterBrisket was very tough.
The day began with breakfast, a Pancake, a, sausage, a biscuit and gravy. Im not a morning eater but the food was good and hot. All you could eat pancakes. While eating, we were entertained by a piano player playing show tunes, The Entertainer among other selections. Everyone was real nice and friendly. After breakfast we boarded our tour bus for the day and returning to the Ft. Hays Chuckwagon for dinner. A choice of sliced beef or chicken, a baked potato, baked beans, sliced apples in applesauce, a dinner roll with a honey glaze. And spice cake. Though you could opt to purchase pie, ice cream, or other goodies. Included was lemonade. After dinner was a musical variety show with performances by a look alike Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley. They have an accomplished fiddle player Liz Knowles. Overall, very enjoyable and I would highly recommend it. If I make it back in the next year or so, as I hope, I will return to the Chuckwagon for a fun filled evening and perhaps be able to meet more of the performers.
It was really cool! I would definitely go again!
The show is awesome! Dinner is pretty good too!
Best supper and a show Ive ever been to. Food was good show was excellent!
Good food, great staff, and the show was engaging and very entertaining!
Fort Hays, home of the Dances With Wolfs movie set, Great tours, Awesome breakfast, and the best run chuck wagon and dinner show west of the Mississippi. Our tour driver, Dave, was awesome. He took great care of us, We felt like we were family and we had a great time.
Amazing history and even better staff super friendly and very kid friendly make shore to tell rattlesnake randy a hello
Fun place to stop with food, entertainment, and a Dances with Wolves film set. Great Mt. Rushmore tour
Fun! And friendliest staff in town. Gift shops excellent. Food cheap! Loved the piano player at breakfast. Beautiful photographable views. Super fun for kids and old folks.
Im not against dogs but Im not happy to have one sitting in the restaurant as I eat my breakfast.
Very good food. Great entertainment.
Great entertainment. Music show is cool and unexpectedly good.
This was awesome! Great food and entertainment!!
Absolutely fantastic show! Food was good, and plenty of it. The musicians were excellent! This is by far the best dinner theatre show I’ve seen! If I am ever in the area again, I will definitely come back!
No one there. Went to specifically see the Dances with Wolves props and filing story. We walked the site by ourselves
We had a great time during our day with the Mount Rushmore your, Chuck Wagon dinner, and show. I have to say the after dinner show was the best!
Hokey, but fun! Go early and go through the exhibits. The staff was knowledgeable and funny. The rope and blacksmith demonstrations were great!! Food was good and the show lots of fun. Good, fun family entertainment!
Who can resist pancakes served on a camping plate with coffee and sausage? And the delightful piano player was able to play a request..Deep in the Heart of Texas. But we were the only ones clapping at the appropriate parts of the tune. Fun place!
Breakfast was great and very affordable. They also have so many things to see. The people are super great! The kids had a lot of fun.
Good place to relax and learn more about culture of cowboys
Cheesy but fun and clean fun for families!
Fun to see officers building from the Dances with Wolves set, but as far as an attraction other than the chuck wagon meal, not much to see and do.
Nice grounds, exhibits, gift shops to visit before dinner and the show. Hearty helpings and tasty. Dinner line ran smoothly and efficiently. The Wranglers were good musicians and entertainers who included some audience participation. We sang along and had fun!
Food was light in the pan, but the show was great
Nice little place to go back in time to see the little town setup with the shops with people actually demonstrating the use of some of the old tools used back in the day. The food was ok and the show was quite entertaining after the dinner. Good night out with the fam.
A great chuckwagon dinner and show!
It was fun and a decent price, it’s a long day so buckle in and maybe don’t bring kids, it’s very dry for them. Don’t take long enough stops at the nice spots, too much driving around and looking at grass. Still worth the admission
The chuckwagon dinner was delicious and the music show was awesome!!!!!
Excellent bargain. Breakfast included, tour of the Black Hills, Rushmore & Crazy Horse. A lunch stop if you choose. Plenty of picture time. Ends with dinner & an enjoyable evening of entertainment! Its a long day but top notch experience!
Lots of fun things to do and see. Food was ok and the show was lots of fun; even my teenager and younger kids enjoyed it.
We took the Mt. Rushmore bus tour with breakfast, dinner and the show. Whole family had a good time, bus tour was much nicer than trying to navigate around ourselves, guide was knowledgeable and fun. Breakfast was serviceable. The dinner was below average food quality with with limited options. I bet its hard to feed 200 people at once though, so no big deal. The show was harmless family friendly entertainment to cap off the evening. the Fort is small and quickly toured. Thought it was a little weird they did a dinner prayer over the microphone.
Did the tour. All I can say is wow. The driver fit that bus through tunnels trucks were afraid to go in. We had the large bus. Breakfast and supper with music was included in our tour price. All you can eat pancakes. The music entertainment was fun. Would definitely recommend. Best way to see a lot of the sights without the parking hassle and without paying extra for park fees. Plus, I didnt get lost. ..lol. The driver was very educated and shared with us things we would have overlooked just driving by, making the tour all the more worthwhile. They do offer photo stops, but if youre not driving you can take those from the bus as well.
The food is excellent and the music is FANTASTIC !!
Good food with a great show!
Great food, great music, great people, & great love of country too!
Wish they would offer juice refills awesome place to eat
Wonderful Old West atmosphere, fun cowboy supper and exceptional music show!
Entainment good! Cafeteria style even had to bring your tin plates back to kitchen. Would have liked a little more service. Just a lot of up and down from the picnic table. Hard for elderly.
Good Breakfast very filling pancakes
Awesome supper dinner show. Great entertainment for all to see. Opens next summer 2020.
Awesome experience!! Old rustic style!! Scenes from the movie Dances with Wolves were filmed here!! Highly recommended!!
Consistently very nice experience. Weve been here at least once a year, staff are extremely nice, food is very good and entertainment is always great.
Dinner Show was so entertaining. Mostly Western music but some Rock and Roll. Expect surprise guest to be added to the show. Prepare to laugh. The food is cowboy fare. Very good and lots to eat.
