My wife and I took my daughter there for there Halloween event. It was a lot of fun! The staff was well prepared. The place was clean and the activities were perfect for the children!
This place was so amazing. Not only did my 9 and 11 year old learn so much, so did I. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The bathrooms and the entire building was super clean. Lots of fun with my kiddos!
The museum is ambitious and strives to keep the good balance among science, history, and culture. The downside is that it’s a bit costly for its small size. In other words, the place could have more displays to make the visit longer and worthwhile, or reduce the price a bit, especially for adults who take the kids there.
Exceeded expectations! The ladies working the front desk were knowledgeable and sweet. The planetarium experience was outstanding. A wide variety of displays! Highly recommended for teens and up.
Such a great learning experience for our kids. We learn something new with each visit.
We were here on Friday, March 23, around 2pm.There were lots of parking spaces. There were very few people inside. We paid $10/adult; $8/senior; $7/17yo and below. The ticket is good for the next day too.The facility is clean and organized.A lot of history however i think we were there during the dead time because there were no activities for the kids and no programs. I think there film showing but we were not able to see it.It may have been great but we will never know.
There was 1 other family in the entire museum. They still turned us away because we won’t wear masks for health reasons.
We spent a day going to museums in Rapid City.. This place was outstanding!!! It takes a person from the dinosaur age to modern time. Plan to spend a couple hours or more, if you want to see everything and read all of the descriptive material at each exhibit.. It was a great time... And educational..
An excellent day at the museum! The Lakotas explaination of life....
A work in progress. Good learning place for kids.
Great place for kids to learn and explore! I would definitely recommend stopping there l. $10 allows you to visit 2 days. There was so much great history to see! There are things for kids to see and feel.
You need to visit and enjoy the rich heritage of the plains American Indian. A must see.
Wonderful place for kids and adults to learn the history of this area, with lots of things for kids to touch and play with! This is a place I would recommend anyone to go to. Definitely take advantage of the 2 day admission, because you need a complete full day to really enjoy all of it!
It was nice I studied geology paleontology archaeology Custer sitting bull gall
Fabulous presentation from the past to the present. Great exhibits and learning opportunities. Love this museum. Should not be missed.
Great Museum! Alot of History.
The journey museum was a fun adventure my sister and I stopped in at while in Rapid City. There was an information scavenger hunt you can do and if you get the correct answers you get a neat pin! They have wonderful documentaries that are shown throughout the day and is definitely a wonderful place to visit.
Awesome place good staff
Excellent! A very informative presentation.
Well done museum, lots to see.
Such a cool place to learn about the area and history. Very very kid friendly!!
Very well organized museum with lots of displays, including hands-on displays. I would go here again because there was so much to see.
The museum was neat and interesting for myself who loves history and reading about it. But my 9 year old son struggled to stay entertained. He liked it, but I don’t feel like he got the same experience I did.
Very nicely setup, very informative. Enjoyed the visit.
Fantastic place to vitit. So much history. Need senior discount for fixed income patrons.
This is a great place to visit. The exhibits are very modern and give great details about the areas history.
This is hands down the best museum in South Dakota. Lots of quality, interactive play areas for kids and the adults will be impressed by the intelligent and beautiful exhibits. It’s the kid of museum that sticks with you after you leave. My favourite was the teepee with the hologram of the Lakota elder speaking inside.
Lots of hands-on learning opportunities. Valuable information and artifacts. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here!
Very welcoming!!, 5 museums in one. Bringing together our travels helping us to realize its not the Destination its the Journey!
Amazing museum! Lots for us & the kids to do! We could spend two days here!
Exceptional! We try and check out museums with our kids when we travel. This is one of the nicest museums weve visited; we stayed twice as long as we had planned. Hats off to the management it was evident to us that much planning and work has been put in to this place. Admission was very low and would have been with it at twice the cost.
Absolutely loved going here! Learned so much and enjoyed it! Cant wait to go back
Very interesting featuring well designed exhibits and noteworthy artifacts. Good selection of historical firearms.
Awesome museum! Enjoyed our visit.
This was a fun place to visit. The staff was knowledgeable and accommodating. I enjoyed the materials were targeted for people of all ages, and my favorite part was the pit for kids to dig for artifacts. They were bunged to the ground. Looked like fun. We liked that the admission let us in for 2 days, so we could enjoy a show in the theatre.
Very interesting museum. It offers a 14 minute film in addition to the displays and information provided with the displays. Also, it offers several hands on opportunities for students if all ages.
What a joke. The museum educator told a group, my son and I in it. That Custer had been in the Black Hills to help protect the treaty from the Gold Rush. I asked her to repeat it and she verified it. I thought, Wow, this is info I never had. Walked over to the Black Hills exhibit and it said Custer had been in the area surveying, in violation of the treaty, when the expedition discovered gold and started the gold rush. I went back to her and she confirmed what she said earlier. I told her what the exhibit said and she said. Oh, she meant the reverse. Really. Did she get any training in Native history? She is teaching incorrect info to kids and painting Custer as just a nice guy? This is a big insult to Native Americans.
A lot of educational stuff for adults if you want to know the history of South Dakota, and enough stuff to keep kids busy if you have them along too. We really liked reading about all the different types of rocks and the exhibit that displayed all the different beautiful gems was really cool. The gift shop had plenty of South Dakota related things in it but so does every other place in the area.
Love the Journey, always fun. Enjoyed the film festival there. A great place to go for the entire family.
We ended up going there because a snow storm that stranded us in Rapid city. The staff was friendly and very helpful. There was plenty hands on exhibits for little ones, the exhibits were all very intresting and relevant to the area. I was very impressed and enjoyed the Native American history part of the exhibits and displays it was respectful and well presented. It was a true depiction of our amazing people and there struggles. It was well worth 10 bucks. Thank you
Beautiful exhibits, informative documentary and presentation on native quilling art. Give yourself a few hours for this museum!
Fantastic presentation regarding Custer and the original expedition into the black hills.
We go to museums all the time. This is one of the best. Great exhibits about the land and the people. Im so happy we went here before all the other sights. Well done!!!
This place had a lot of great information on the history of the area. The employees were all extremely friendly. Their gift shop had a lot to offer at reasonable prices, my son got one of his coolest toys there. Next time were in town, well plan on spending more time there so we can take in more.
The quickest 3 hours Ive spent in a long time.
Absolutely gorgeous building. Wow. The staff is super friendly and chatted with me about the architecture. :)The museum itself has some good movies to show, some interesting and great exhibits (if you dont know much yet about Native American history, you are in for a big treat). They also have exhibits that come and go. There was an Oscar Howe exhibit when we went, and it was EXCELLENT.Very enjoyable, cheap to get into.Someone said there is not much for kids to do. I have to wonder if we went to different museums, because this place was absolutely loaded with stuff for kids to enjoy, lots of hands-on learning to be done.Loved this place. Fun, interesting exhibits, BEAUTIFUL, cool building, nice staff.PS There was a massive hail storm which arrived just as the museum was closing. They did not kick us out and let us wait out the storm there. :) And they were really nice even before that happened.
Very educational and interesting
Good for every age. Seniors were $10.00, adults $12., kids 6-12 $7. Kids 5 and under free.
This Is a good place to take kids that are under 6 or for anyone over the age of 13. Activities for the younger kids are good. The information provided for those over 13 is very interesting. For those inbetween, not much. They are too old for the activities and too young to understand the information provided.
Very interesting
Love the history of this place
Took my daughter as it was her birthday wish to go to a real museum. She had a great time.
Interesting exhibits, so much to learn, lots of interactive exhibits. Friendly staff.
I felt like this museum was incomplete. Something is missing. Its good for kids with hands on exhibits. Otherwise its spotty and inconsistent.
Essentially this museum is several under one roof. It has a well-presented geological focus especially with regard to stratification & the minerals found in each layer. There is mention of archeological endeavor. The next scope is anthropolical as it looks at the Sioux culture. Finally it moves to a historical slant, using Custers last battle as a pivotal point in laws passed, personalities involved prior to & after this infamous fight. At the very last the flood that affected this area is dealth wih inadequately. Its like they ran out of puff at the end & gave it a mere mention. The place is wheelchair friendly with parking near the building. To do it justice Id recommend a two-day visit.
Could spend all day there. Thoroughly involving.
There web site does not do the museum justice. Lots of great things to see and learn about. My 6 and 14 year old had a great time.
Good museum to take children. They offer hands on activities and lots of historical information.
The free portion of the museum is fun. They could do more with the knowledge contained within, as the old sioux indian Museum was free...but someone couldnt stand to see free things.
Learned about the Black hill forests
The Guitar Masters concert was great
Amazing museum..tells a great story of the Black Hills
They have no exhibits on alcohol or meth, not an accurate representation of Lakota in the black hills area
Large museum with lots of history well displayed!
Great diversity of topics from geology to history. I especially enjoyed the exhibits relating to Native American society.
Very very cool... Definitely worth taking a couple hours to check this out!
A great place to take the kiddos to learn!
An interesting museum about native Americans in South Dakota. You watch a short video and youre on your way to sample the journey.
One of the stops on s trip to Mt Rushmore. Was a journey to the past. Displays of things of the past. Lots of them!
Great place to learn about the geology, paleontology, and human history (both native and homesteading) of the Black Hills and nearby area. Outstanding display of all the different types of rock in the hills. Also showing astronomy and local interest shows in the auditorium.
Cute museum with a great variety of exhibits. Great place to host an event.
We learned about the geology, early pioneer history and mining in the Black Hills
Also planetarium show. Small but enjoyable. Friendly staff
Too focused on Indian arts. I did enjoy the dinosaur section and the star/space room. The old west portion had neat things as well.
Theres alot of really cool interesting things of history to see here, it took me so long to look at everything, and they have really cool artifacts I havent seen in alot of places
Off the beaten path. Worth the jog if wondering how Black Hills people are the way they are?
Good detailed history of the local native people
When this was suggested as a possible thing to do, I was ambivalent. I thought it would be a quick hour or so spent looking at stuff. Turned out to be an amazing 3 hours checking out the gallery and the exhibits. Highly recommend!
I had more fun here then at most of the other museums in rapid City SD.
Very Interesting Native American History
Fantastic museum. Well put together and highly educational. Id recommend taking your children here and participating in there summer camps.
Great place to learn the history of dinosaurs and midwest
Some of the exhibits are a little tired / need physical improvements
It was fun learning experience and was reasonable for pricing. You actually get two visits for price of one admition. The staff was excellent friendly and facilities were clean. It was large building and an overall great museum.
The history of Rapid City and the Black Hills, encapsulated.
Love this place soo much memories
Strongly suggest a visit here if you have an hour or more. The trolly drops here, too ($2/pp for an all day pass, exact change only). Theres a bit of reagional geology, history, Native museum, a movie all here. We learned a lot about the Black Hills area before our tour.
A fine museum to learn the history of settlers going west to settle this country.
Amazing!! It has so much to look at, staff was friendly and I will return because im afraid I didnt see everything!!
Excellent History of the Black Hills
Great facility, quality exhibits. Kid activities. Plan to spend some time. Also offers lots of programs for locals.
Wonderful facility. Just there for a meeting this time, but hope to return in near future to fully explore.
Awesome! It was a very good time, lots of information, children experience spots throughout! Staff was very friendly!
A neat museum about the area. A lot of Native American artifacts and history. A fun place to spend an afternoon.
