I loved this trail! It is a loop trail, going to this trail doesnt require some exceptional skills,it is pretty much for everyone. It goes through the forest, so in some places trail is shaded. But there are also parts of trail that are not shaded. So, be aware of that if you go there in a hot, sunny day. The view from the top is amazing. There are benches on the side of the trail, which would be helpful for people who want to take some rest. Vegetation is stunning, you will feel scent of the trees.
This place is great. I love the steady steep incline of the trail head with breath taken views. I can hike up the front of thumb butte that has concrete walk way and back down/ around the back side of thumb butte that is smooth dirt trails with other short look out trails connected to it.
Good moderate hike if you go Counter Clockwise. More difficult if you go clockwise. Clockwise is paved initially to help with erosion, but is super steep. Counter clockwise is not paved, still a little steep, but not near as steep as the other way. Several benches along the path. Small plaques that explain different plant life and some terrain. Good views from the top.
Air was clear, path clean, pine aroma great. Fairly crowded with many of state plates on a weekday interesting to me. Just did steep basic trail of about 2 miles car to car. Weve extended in the past with side trails.
We went up the loop trail #33 a few times while staying in Prescott this summer. It is a nice and easy trail under 2 miles in length and is suitable for kids and adults of all ages alike. The steeper parts of the trail are paved, with railings installed for safety. If you don’t stop a lot to rest or to take in the views of Prescott and the Sierra Prieta (Dark Mountain) mountain range in the distance, the loop should take well under one hour from start to finish. Don’t forget to deposit $5 in cash in the drop box and leave the receipt on the dashboard of your car if parked in the lot by the trailhead.
I suggest hiking up the Steep trail that goes left and then coming down the longer less steep Trail that loops around and comes back out on the right at the bottom. This is easier on your shins. At the top of the loop there is a memorial for the 19 firefighters. You can bring something to add to it.
Great almost 2 mile hike. Two very different routes to go. But quite the sight!
Prescott is amazing, bthumb butte is amazing. Life is good.
The forest ranger was very rude and intrusive. Little short dude, with a bowl haircut. Sad, the few ruin it for the good, well trained, capable rangers.
Great place to hike. Beautiful scenery, nice trails, easy parking.
Great place to visit in the fall time.
Great hike. Pretty strenuous due to having to ascend 700 feet in a short amount of time. The trail is paved and easy to walk. I personally didnt have any problems but I could imagine someone with say knee problems being bothered both by ascending and also on the decent. The parking lot has plenty of room so that was great.
Nothing spectacular, maybe 60-90 minute round trip. The summit of the trail is about 300 feet elevation below the top of the rocks. Counterclockwise is steeper and shorter, but paved.
Always enjoy the hike. Great views! Easy enough for my son, though a bit treacherous on the icy switchbacks in winter. The $5 fee is reasonable, and easy to pay. This is a fun area for the kids to explore.
Awesome hike; went to the top
Love this hike. Beautiful
Trails that leave from the parking lot go north, west and south. To the west and north, there are many choices that connect to other trail complexes and you can build a hike of whatever distance you like. Although there are a few steep sections, they are generally easy to moderate. The trails to the south go up Thumb Butte and are quite steep, although the main trail is actually paved. You will either need a pass or have to pay $5 to park in the lot. Be sure to display your pass or receipt.
Tons of great trails and views, a little crowded sometimes
This is a great place to go hiking! Hike is short but challenging due to the elevation gain. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Prescott!
Very scenic and quiet, loved the railings on the paved side up! The benches were a nice touch too, to take a minute to rest and enjoy the view
$5 for day use, and it is so beautiful!
The left trail is going to start with the heavy incline up the trail. I’d recommend taking the right trail.
1.75 mile hike. Great parking
Great area, well maintained trail.
A beautiful place to take a walk/hike !
Its beautiful but wouldnt recommend for beginners or those with back, hip or knee issues. Its quite steep with only a few areas of railing to hold on to. Most of it has sliding dirt and rock that forces you to walk the outside edge of the trail really throwing off balance and causing foot pain even in really good sneakers. Make sure you have some experience with rough steep trails and lots of sunblock and water. There arent any water stations or restrooms on the trail that I saw. I use to be an avid hiker and this was really hard on my back, knees and ankles. There were lots of people with dogs. I would definitely recommend walking sticks for support. Its beautiful but VERY rough areas with a steep climb.
Great for hiking and biking in the forest.
Medium difficulty hike with great views.
Its a moderate hike on well maintained trails until you reach the base of Thumb Butte. For an excellent all around view, and for the more sure-footed and adventurous, make your way up a rugged trail to the summit of the butte. Well worth the 1.75 mile hike and $5 entrance fee to the recreation area.
Great mountain biking.
Great place for a hike
One of our favorite hiking spots
Short hike but great views and well worth it word of warning there is a big altitude gain
Beautiful area to hike.
Beautiful Thanksgiving day sunrise atop Thumb Butte!
Great place to visit. Walked in the woods. Great photos
Its a great hike
Moderate to step hike that isnt long. Great views and family friendly. Bring your camera
Nice hike, but not maintained at all.
Nice trails.
Great hike
Great hiking. There is the main trail, which is okay but there are so many cool options. Check out the others.
Great hiking trail around Thumb Butte.
Great hike beautiful scenery
Great for hiking, picnics,. Also very large pavilion you can rent for weddings, birthdays etc etc
Ook on the Thumb Butte trail during an extended period of rain, snow and cold. It’s a great trail and view for a short trek. But the steep side to the left is paved with black top all the way up, with guard rails at some spots. We had a few days of 50’s and sun after a bad stretch of rain, snow and cold. Thought the trail would be clear since the tar would warm and melt. Not the case, the top 1/3 was very icy and slick and too late to back track on slippery surface, so using the rails helped even with solid soled hiking shoes. People told us the other side was more traditional hiking surface and far easier to return. So be aware of conditions and ask those returning what to expect if you plan on hiking in winter. Otherwise a great starter hike to get a feel of terrain, view and challenges. I’d call it a must do if weather permits
Lots of trail, nice picnic area, grills available. Enjoyable day there an good views.
Awesome views, short yet challenging hikes short drive from downtown Prescott!
Lots of perfect spots to stop and strengthen while breathing fresh air
Was there for a mothers day retreat and was a beautiful space. Quiet, green, peaceful. All that we were looking for.
Had a company picnic there. All the accommodations a group could ask for. Ironically I had a hard time finding it on Google maps.
Great hike!
Very pretty trails for moderately in shape hikers. Great panoramic views. Lots of picnic areas with grills. Fully plumbed bathrooms. A must visit if you are from out of town.
Go counterclockwise for an even elevation gain. Clockwise for a more direct route. Clockwise is paved while counterclockwise is unpaved. Lots of areas are temporarily closed thru June for falcon nesting.
Great place for a nice hike. Short and sweet.
An absolutely beautiful gem just 90 minutes north of Phoenix. Great hiking.
Beautiful area, nice facilities. Hike to top is quite strenuous for Flatlanders... But, take your time and youll get there. Well worth the effort. Very top was closed due to peregrine falcon mating/nesting season, but still worth it. Small memorial to Wildland firefighters near the top.
Go to the right for a more gradual hike, to the left for quicker elevation... Nice little loop, great views
No words can explain you have to see it
Trails well marked,
I agree with Kevin about the trail markers, but otherwise its a pretty good place to hike. I would also not recommend the short hike that goes virtually straight up the side, to anyone who isnt in good shape...
Park was clean and well equipped for large groups. There are hikes for the novice and the die hard
Lots of trails in this area that connect with other trails so you can have a beautiful short hike or spend the whole day hiking. Nice to see Thumb Butte Creek flowing.
Beautiful View of Thumb Butte in Prescott AZ. Has bathrooms and picnic tables. Day use.
A great place to hike. The parking lot cost a little money but it is free on Wednesdays. The trail is a loop that is just under 2 miles around. One side of the trail is harder to go up than the other so plan according. There are some times of the year where the trail is closed due to some birds nesting in the area. The trial will not take you up to the very top of the rock but if you are the adventurous type, you can bushwhack from the the top of the trial and climb up the back way to reach the summit. The view from the trail is great and the view from the summit is even better. Please note that some parts of the trail are paved and some are not. Also, the is no fast way down nor are there water sources on the trail so be prepared and bring plenty of water.
An easy hike of two mile trail for all ages.
Loved it, if you hike up and want the less steep route, go to the right at first!
Great hike, the first half is straight up, great views
The views are the most beautiful
Gorgeous! Excellent work out climbing up!
Nice hike and views of Prescott and Flagstaff mountains
Was so pretty
Great work out this morning took about 45 mins
Great trail, beautiful scenery!
Great hiking place. A bit crowded at times
Beautiful hiking trails.
This place is so beautiful. Go left if you want a work out, right if you want something flatter.
A great hike, but I wouldnt recommend hiking it during peak heat hours this summer. If you do hike it during the peak heat, bring LOTS of water, and rest in the shade more frequently than you would ordinarily. The sun is grossly incandescent this time of year. Be safe, and if you see others hiking in the sun, engage in some jolly cooperation to make it to the top.Praise the sun!
Beautiful. Picnic area is fantastic
Its a tough hike at the last half of the trail that goes up more directly but the trail that goes up around the back side was fairly easy. But the views all around are phenomenal! You can see all of Prescott at the top. Well worth it!
Go there
Great hiking. Great views
Exhilarating hike!
This trail is beautiful♡ Its a bit wild. We ran into javalina, deer and little tarantula this morning;)
Beautiful area, fun hike and surprisingly uncrowded.
Well this is What we like about our area
Been coming here since 1966.
Beautiful place to visit. Lots of hiking trails and beautiful views of the forest.
