This is among the beautiful hikes we have done with our 6 year old. Starts and end at the same point in a circle and there is a look out point half way which is 3 miles clock wise and 6.5 miles anti clock wise. Total trek is around 9.5 mile. We did clock wise to the look out and returned. On our way back we spotted 3 deer inside the forest. It was amazing experience and unforgettable. We were little disappointed without a water body anywhere near this trail. But this makes a wonderful trek.
I wish all hiking trails were like this one. We didnt run into many hikers, but when we did, they followed the rules of the trail & were so friendly. We didnt have to pick up one piece of trash! It was a long hike, about a 9 mile loop. The trail was well maintained, not difficult if youre up for a long one. It is a multi-use trail for horses, hikers, & bikers, so its important to stay alert. We did see some deer, a few squirrels, & lizards.Worthy of a repeat hike.
Overall, it is a scenic trail with lots to see very beautiful trail. However, if you can’t hike 7 miles round trip then I don’t recommend. Also make sure you have legitimate hiking shoes the rocks along trail will hurt your ankles without proper shoes. Also don’t expect a full view of mountain ranges on top was kinda disappointed but still rewarding. The weather up there was 57degrees In May that was worth it all coming from phx.
Super chill spot to relax and have a good conversation in a quiet area .. No sounds at all on all hallows eve.
Take your time on this trail, and soak up all of the beautiful scenery around you. Clocked around 11 miles. I recommend taking the loop counterclockwise. That way the fire watch tower is towards the end of the trail, and it makes the perfect conclusion to a fantastic day!Your shoes will get wet, because there where about 3 minor water crossing at the time. Lots of opportunity to see wildlife (if you’re quiet enough that is.) I was able to see a plethora of different birds and well as some deer.At the start of the trail as well as by the fire watch tower, there are restroom facilities, however there was no toilet paper at the time (at least in the one by the fire watch tower), so keep that in mind depending on what type of nature calls....
Overall a good medium difficulty trail. People were friendly and well spaced (not overly busy). A few horses, number of bikes that mostly respect rules. Lots of shade and breezes as well as sections of sun. I could not get to the coffee shop at peak was disappointed. Overall a good overall hike.
One of the best trails Ive run on even with the snow!
Great trail the hike takes you to a fire lookout on the top of the mountain the trail is AMAZING and you wont be disappointed
Great trail through wooded areas of the forest. The trail was a relatively easy walk, at least in the area where we were hiking.
As a fairly inexperienced hiker, this almost 10 mile trek took me about 5.5hrs to complete, but the view from the top was pretty spectacular. Granted I also had my Corgi child with me, so extra water breaks were needed. (Side note: Although my pup made it the full length of the hike, its not a great trail for small dogs. There were a lot of really rocky stretches that were a disadvantage to short legged pups & makes for slow-going.) It was also early November when I hiked this so we didnt go through as much water, but if you go during the warmer months, youll want to pack enough to get you through. Theres a bathroom at the top, but I didnt check to see if there was a place to refill drinking water since I still had plenty. Lastly, if you want more of a workout, follow the trail clockwise since the first stretch is almost entirely uphill. If you want a more intermittent workout with an easier finish, take the trail counterclockwise. Enjoy!
Just getting acquainted to the Prescott trails, thanks to Rex for giving us guidance and a map of the trails
One of my favorite loops. Great 10(ish) mile hike with awesome views. The look out tower is fun and if the ranger is there you can climb up and take a look.Do miss this one but be prepared for the UP!:)
9.2 mile long loop. If you start by going to the left then it is 3.5 miles to the lookout point which is breath taking! There is a restroom and picnic tables up at the lookout point. We saw wildlife of all sorts and you feel so far away from the city.you can hike, bike, or ride horses here, The trail is moderate, some switch backs, nothing too steep. If you plan to do the whole loop give yourself 5 to 7 hours to hike it depending on how fast and experienced you are.
We set out to do a portion of this trail, but we got rained out(we were not prepared for the rain). Any rate the 25 minutes out of good weather was nice, even the 25 min back in the rain wasnt to bad, just wet. At any rate we will schedule for another day.
Beautiful trail ride. Will be returning often.
Best trail in Prescott! great scenery not to hard
Had a great hike here, I recommend this trail to anyone who loves the outdoors.
Beautiful trail system! Will be going again..
This is an awesome loop trail. The trail heading north from the parking lot is about 3 miles to the summit and lookout on Spruce Mt. Continue south along the ridge to the intersection with the Isabella trail and turn west to head down and back to the trailhead. The loop total is about 9.5 miles. Although you might meet hikers or mountain bikers along the way, it is usually not busy.
Lovely hike. Awesome boulders.
Great moderate hike that delivers almost 10 miles and 1700 feet of net altitude change in the wonderful Prescott National Forest. This hike will give you a mix of sun and shade and usually temperatures in the 80s in summer. Its also a good loop with a steeper side and shallower side so you choose how hard you want to work on your way up.At the top of your steep side climb is a Forest Service observation tower. Sometimes you go up and in and get amazing views of the surrounding area. If things arent busy and there are Forest Service personnel they may give a tour of the tower and what they do.
Multiple trails...find the hidden cabin
Took my mountain bike on the whole loop. This is better hiked than biked unless you are a highly technical rider. Pat Baillies local guide book describes the descent as an incredibly smooth undulating five mile euphoric descent. This description is hyperbole to the point of misinformation. Its mostly not smooth, likely will require riders to dismount multiple times, and is consequently not at all euphoric. As for the beginning uphill, the strenuous nature is also exaggerated in multiple reviews: its not that bad (but still technical for cyclists). Fun to knock on the door of the observation tower and get invited in for a quick tour.
Very beautiful place. Found a geocache.
Nice hike. 8 mile loop. For the fit.
Great place to hike and camp. Beutiful mountains and peaceful
I havd packed this trail 18 years ago with my scout troop and wanted to check it out again so I packed up my puppy and we headed up the hill. Most of the trail is nicely shaded with trees and the first mile or so is softer sand. You can definitely notice some of the elevation gain after about two miles but the puppy powered through with frequent breaks. The lookout tower is a nice stopping place to have lunch and take in the scenery. We only did the one side up and back, about 7 miles, but I look forward to returning and completing the loop in the future.
This is a great 9 1/2 mile loop trail. There is a bathroom near the lookout but no water. There is an elevation change of more than 1300 feet. Enjoy!
Beautiful Hike!
Very pretty!
I love everything thing at Groom Creek. The trails, the camp site, everything. The camp host are great
Its not as easy hike, but it is a beautiful experience by yourself or with a friend.
Nice hike but crowded and too many horses for me. Constantly stepping in or trying to avoid horse poop.
The varioys trails in Prescott National Forest, are notable.
Nice ride, but make sure your horse is in shape . Steep hills
The whole PNF is great!!!
Good bouldering, great mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding. Starts around 6000 feet and climbs to around 7500. Pretty
