During Covid-19, I do not recommend the narrow trails that arent monitored to enforce mask wearing, at least on the redwood trails part. We went here over the weekend, and while most people were considerate and wore masks, the few who did not were unavoidable on the very narrow trails leading to the redwood observation deck. There is definitely not six feet of space to distance. Those few people were enough to make the trip unpleasant, due to the danger of heavy-breathing hikers without masks passing within inches of us. However, one runner in particular kept going past us very closely. (As an actual runner myself, I can comfortably enough wear my mask, even in heat, even on longer runs, by pulling mine up as I near people, so I expect the same). When we finally said Hey, man, give us some space or put on a mask when you run past he defiantly looked us in the eyes and ran closer, even as I held my 4 year old child who also wears a mask. We hoped for a pleasant weekend hike, but ended up with heavy-breathing running/hiking, non-mask wearers going within inches of us too often to be fun.
Quiet place. Appropriate for meditations.
Good hiking all around and got to see some Falcons :)
This place made my heart leep - nearly to the height of these wondrous towers.
The deck sits on a steep slope: the back of the deck against the slope with the front a good 15 feet off of the ground. Because of how the deck is situated, you feel more like a bird among the goliath redwoods surrounding the deck, rather than a bunny on the ground. Yes, the Japanese Gardens are a peaceful place for reflecting, as are the banks of the Columbia. But sitting on the benches at the Observation Deck with streams of light shining through the dark forest makes for a special spot to get away in Portland. Then, walking through the other paths of the Hoyt Arboretum makes for a pleasant afternoon.
Very crowded but it was beautiful.
A quiet place of living Giants in the midst of the beauty of Forest Park Hoyt arboretum. Enjoy the quiet beauty, soak in the muse. Bring a book, a camera. Listen for stillness. Its here
Nature is everything to me and the observation deck at Hoyt auditorium is amazing and allows you to observe quite a bit of the forest at hand walking down the trail a little ways theres a creek under a wood bridge that produces a wonderful ambiance
One of the best, most beautiful ands amazing places in Portland. Calm and relaxing, a truly transcendent place. The small grove of redwoods were all planted here; they are not native to this place, although they do grow in Oregon, usually along the coast. These trees were among the first planted after the creation of the Arboretum; most date to around 1930. Of special note is one particular Dawn Redwood, found at the turn-around at the end of Bray Lane, a service road with a gated entrance from Fischer Lane (accessible by vehicle only by special arrangement with Arboretum staff.) Look for the plaque on the north side of the turn-around. It explains that this particular dawn redwood is a living fossil, believed to be extinct, but rediscovered in a remote section of China during WWII. An amazing story.
Although not as incredibly huge trees in other places, it’s a great view of the scene and a good place to sit a ponder, or to rest if you’re taking a longer walk.
Beautiful stop! Perfect for a short rest in the shade.
Such a peaceful and beautiful spot to be around a busy city. There is total peace here. I will be back
Good place for hiking
A beautiful little grove. A lovely place to spend an hour reading or to take a break while hiking the arboretum.
Vibrant forested area full of trails serpentining through an offering of redwoods, sequoias, Douglas Firs and cedars. And it is minutes from downtown.
This is just about everyones favorite spot in Hoyt Arboretum. The view from the deck is always great, whether its a late summer eventing or a foggy winter afternoon.
An almost mystical atmosphere surrounds this place. Within the redwoods, all sound is drowned off as one stares incessantly at these wondrous miracles of nature.
Lots of special memories here. Highly recommended.
Beautiful little spot to lose yourself in
Worth taking the walk down to this site. You will find a deck built into the hillside nestled into a grove of redwoods, even one growing through the decking for an up close view. It isnt too far from the top and totally possible for all ages.
Grateful to live so close to this treasure
Well maintained given how popular it is.
Outdoors surrounded in lush green trees with the sun shining. Who wouldnt love that?
I dont usually write reviews, but this place is so good that Im writing a review. 10/5 stars.
Great view, but the creosote preservative they used on the wood framing smells awful. It would be much more enjoyable if they could apply some sealant to lock in the chemical odor.
Nice trails beautiful redwoods
A favorite place in Hoyt Arboretum. Overlooks the grove of redwoods and giant sequoias.
Beautiful but a little tough to get to unless you are pretty physically fit.
Tucked away, you can get totally lost in the Hoyt Arboretum. Love this place!
Cool little young redwood forest. In Portland
Great place to look at the redwoods
Really peaceful and beautiful.
