A very unique museum. While the presentation of the permanent collections is not especially impressive as far as telling a story, there clearly are stories. The special exhibit Spit is Death is both exceptionally timely and very well done. It does a great job of telling the story! The items on display are backed up by the great text and hands on items.
Great museum with artifacts from the 1800s. Current exhibit discusses the 1918 Spanish Flu, very fitting given the current times of Covid. Exhibits are pretty packed together, be prepared to do a fair amount of reading. Spent about 3 hrs here when we went, definitely depends if youre a slow reader or a faster reader, and whether or not you wanted to read each part. no photos once you enter the gallery. While they let kids in, they have to be very comfortable with the human body!
Unique museum with amazing exhibits that will interest most medical professionals, students, and anyone else who loves science and medicine. Beware many of the exhibits may be considered graphic. Its not a free museum so for those that are interested in such things, this is definitely worth a visit. They have a gift shop with some interesting souvenirs that would appeal to you if you love science and medicine with a dash of humor.
The Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, which houses medical oddities, anatomical specimens, diseased body parts, and medical instruments, is equally fascinating and disturbing. Start on the lower level, where you’ll be greeted by skeletons of a dwarf, a giant, and an average-sized person. Then check out the giant colon and the Chevalier Jackson collection of more than two thousand swallowed objects, including many that will make you cringe; the plaster cast of real-life conjoined twins Chang and Eng, whose autopsy was performed at the museum; and more. The museum certainly separates the science lovers from the squeamish, and one thing that tips the scales toward “must see” is the museum’s sense of humor. The conjoined twin cookie cutter in the kitschy gift shop is a welcome relief after examining slides of Albert Einstein’s brain.
The Mutter Museum is a very odd and interesting place to spend a few hours. Ive been there multiple times and its always such a unique and enjoyable experience. If you are easily disturbed at the sight of morbid medical things, go with caution. Its a very special kind of collection, one of which you will most likely never see again in such a large amount. I loved it!
This was a cool museum. If you like medical mysteries, some of the displays are very fascinating. I think it will be better after the expansion they have planned, and after covid. There were some things you cant access right now. Great for anyone 10yrs old and up.
Definitely a unique and very informative museum, lots of artifacts and exhibits to see. Hand satirized easily accessible and wipes for any interactive areas. Spent about 1.5 hours inside and definitely enjoyed the trip!
Amazing museum, helps to go with a friend in the medical field to ask questions. Might be the only museum Ive been to where I read every single description. You can get through it in 1.5 hours or so, its fairly small but very dense. The pandemic exhibit couldnt have been timed more perfectly.
I went to the Mitter mueseum twice on two different school trips. Before going, I would faint at the sight of even the smallest bit of blood. But after going and seeing all the grotesque things inside us and in other people, I got over my Hemphobia and was really happy when I went back there again. Its an informative and fun mueseum! Would definitely go again to visit the soap lady.
I absolutely loved this museum. It is associated with the College of Surgeons and features an amazing collection of full and partial skeletons. The displays include skeletons of various ages, including a whole series of fetal skeletons at various points in gestation. There are skeletons of hunchbacks, conjoined twins, dwarves, syphilis suffers, and many other medical conditions that impact on the skeleton. In addition the are photographs and preserved specimens highlighting many other conditions. On top of all that, there are some lovely gardens to explore. Perhaps not for everyone, but a treasure for anyone interested in medicine and human anatomy.
Not a large museum but there are numerous displays with alot of information. Clean and well kept. They have a side garden, worth taking a walk through. Definitely recommend this museum. Several displays relate how Philadelphia played a pivotal role during and after the Civil War.No pictures once inside the museum, my pictures are were taken outside, the foyer and garden.
Gross. Dont get me wrong it is quite interesting but my daughter and I could only take about 35 minutes. We got sick of seeing the exhibits. But its good to see this place at least once in your life. Its well worth the money.
Absolutely great. So many medical specimens, so much history, the garden of medicinal plants is lovely, the aesthetic beckons to times gone by. An amazing collection of skulls with history, as well as plenty of diseases and anomalies to get lost in. The gift shop is aces too. Enjoy!
Perfect timing with the pandemic exhibit. Overall, a great, unusual collection of medical conditions and specimens (plentiful of real and reproduced models) Spent about two hours there. It could be a quick walk thru, but enjoyed all the content presented.Masks were worn and hand sanitizer was provided. Timed and limited entry thru the day. Purchased tickets directly from website.
Really interesting experience for Teens and up. Super Clean too and social distancing adhered too. Takes about 1.5 hours to really read and see it all.
No photography or video inside aloud. My wife is a biology teacher and wanted to visit this location for a long time. We built one of our vacations around stopping here actually. Although the specimens inside are quite interesting, you are not permitted photography inside of the museum. Besides that, it was a little crowded; however, my wife did enjoy her visit.
They have a wall of skulls. Real skulls. Skulls of prisoners that were executed, and are etched with the descriptions of the persons crime before they were put to death. If thats not cool, I dont know what is.
Am hoping this can b fixed. Its been going on 4 way 2long. But other than that its a great MUSEUM. COWBOYEDD.
Came to Mutter Museum randomly one day and quickly found it to be so fascinating. I always bring my out of town friends here because its so unique. One of the coolest museums in Philly
Great exhibits, friendly staff. An all-around awesome experience!
A truly unique place with awesomely bizarre exhibits that might be disturbing to some.
Disgustingly Amazing and Informative. Absolutely loved it. Spectacular exhibits and wonderful time reading and seeing all the different things. I wish they had an audio self guided tour available to guest. That would have made the process quicker and would have helped with some of the crowding that was happening. Still would definitely recommend for families and dates as long as youre okay with dead bodies and things in jars. Also no photography is allowed in the exhibit as a respect to the living relatives of the deceased.
Too creepy, great if youre Gothic and like deformities. Great if your favorite season of AHS is freak shows!
The museum overadmits guests during the pandemic making it difficult to maintain appropriate distance.Enforcement of masking is also more lax than appropriate
Albert Eainstines brain isnt ther wth
So cool. There are some really cringe worthy models of diseases. My favorite was the splinter in the eyeball. They have a bunch of birth defect fetal skeletons and a display on FOP which I really liked as well. 10/10
Important to say that photos aren’t allowed inside the Museum. Purses and bags are also not allowed but have a free locker available. When I visited it was still unfinished but it is a very interesting place that you need to include in your travel itinerary!!Lots of interesting stories from known people and rare cases of medicine! If you are a visually sensitive person go prepared because some images are a little strong but overall worth the experience.
Wonderful museum. I’ve visited several times and find something new to enjoy each time.
Quite disappointed by this museum. The collection is surprisingly small and the specimens are generally under lit and poorly (or not at all) labeled. It is mostly a collection of medical oddities with almost everything coming from Mutters original collection from the mid 19th century, which means lots of lumps of tissue in very old jars of formaldehyde. In general, VERY low on educational value and not engaging for a modern audience.
Worst experience I ever had. I didn’t know about the phone policy. It was never mentioned once we walked in and there was no sign until we reached the main highlighted section. I took my phone out to take a picture of the “Influenza Pandemic” entrance sign and an employee DISRESPECTFULLY told me I couldn’t take pictures and walked away in a very rude manner. In museums well NORMAL MUSEUMS you can take pictures of the art or objects on display, but it was not the case in that setting. It made me very uncomfortable in my first experience at the museum and I will not be attending ever again. It was a waste of money, a bad display of the dead and you need to CHECK some of your employees because they are not suitable and respectful in a work environment. I will be taking my money to the Philadelphia Museum of Art instead.
I was really looking forward to visiting this museum. The museum is two floors and it’s not fit for all the people that visit. It’s very enclosed and at times it felt like it was hard to breathe. A lot the items on display were made of wax. The guy at the front where we purchased tickets wasn’t the nicest but that was whatever. We couldn’t take any photos. People were taking photos but the one security person there was slumped in her chair so I guess it’s not really enforced? Overall it was fine. I would recommend visiting on the two days they sell discounted tickets for. $18 is a bit steep for lots of replicas and wax. The medicinal garden was interesting and full of useful information.
Public parking right behind the museum. As amazing as the Travel Channel shows make it seem. This is a One of a Kind museum and a must see in person. Can get packed on the weekends and rather small so plan accordingly. To see everything and read you will need 2 hours or so. Security is little over powering and seems obsessively overbearing. They dont smile and little rude. Not sure why they need all that force for such a small space.
Spooky not for the faint hearted! Good experience if you are into studying biology/medicals. worth the visit! dont forget to visit the medicine garden!
This place is so cool! Its interesting and there is so much to see. I loved the lay out of the exhibits, and all of the information to learn about and absorb. The phantom limb simulator is particularly cool.
Amazing place. The pandemic display is very topical. The rest may not be for the faint of heart but it is a fascinating collection.
Not going to lie its everything you would not expect to see in a typical museum. Truly an experience that will stick with me for as long as I can remember.
Great and interesting museum. If youre in any way interested in the human body its a great place to go.
Is an absolutely amazing museum of oddities, it may not be very big but its well worth EVERY penny!!!
They have a really cool online tour on YouTube! it is super recommendable. You learn about their expositions and it is well produced. A wonderful idea during covid-19!Best, Isabel/ @Zeichenelster
One of the coolest places ive been for a college class trip. no pictures allowed, but the skull wall is worth the trip. and if you are easily grossed out maybe this isnt the place for you. but we got to go into the library and in the back where all the books are in the slats. We asked about the book that is bound in human skin and the lovely lady showed us. crazy! definitely ask about the book (Mary) i think was the womans name.
We had such an amazing time it was such a layed back flow to the exhibits the museum was informative and they had so many interesting artifacts enjoyed every moment make sure you visit the medicinal Garden
I remember as a little girl watching the discovery channel about this museum and many other around the world and let me tell ya its beyond awesome! What a dream come true! Thank you to the staff especially for taking the time to talk in depth detail about the brain and different neurological disorders.
A fantastic little known dont miss sight to visit in Philadelphia. This place is really cool. It seems like it might be creepier or scary but its not in any way. Its part of the University of Pennsylvania medical school, and many of the articles are from the 1800s for physicians to use this reference. Its one of the best places he can go on a date or for a nice fun trip. And its only a few blocks from the cheese steak institutions, Pats and Genos. Fun fun fun
Was a great way to spend the afternoon. Be sure to order your tickets ahead of time.
Absolutely wonderful museum. Staff are kind and helpful, and I appreciate the effort that has been put so far into trying to be respectful of the nature of whats on display. I will say that it can be a bit cramped and warm in some parts of the gallery due to the antique way in which the displays are arranged in an old building, so if youre not feeling well or if you dont get along with other people in museums, be warned.
Very interesting anatomical displays of the human body, diseases and cadavers. Informative and definitely a must see if your in Philly! Checked it off my bucket list
Really creepy and interesting stuff in there. Initially I thought it would not be worth the price but the place is really interesting. Countless human artifacts!
Super cool museum! Lots of chronological displays to observe with respect to medicine. Looking beyond historical language, its a very informative and educational experience. The rooms upstairs are great for educational panels and open discussion. I thoroughly enjoyed attending the Philadelphia Public Health Grand Rounds, held upstairs.Thank you.
Really interesting! I would recommend going on a day with good weather because they have no parking, so you have to walk to the mesuem. They also have an outdoor garden which is better viewed during nice weather. I would also recommend planning at least 2 hours of time to tour the museum, because there is SO MUCH to see.
Many fascinating items - my friend and I most enjoyed the heart injected with mercury, the dyed lungs, and the wall of skulls. Also the skeleton altered due to corset-wearing was amazing! No photos allowed, and remember to bring quarters to store your bag/purse/backpack.
I was in science heaven. I just finished taking anatomy and physiology in college and loved that I knew what somethings were, but what I wasnt expecting to learn was more about pathology. They have a dedicated section for infectious diseases like the flu, and measles. I wish the library was open to the public but I can understand why. If you love science or just strange things in general then this is a great place to go. Students get a discount!!
The spoop bones connected to the really neat bone
Small but very detailed science museum with oddities and many cadavers, fetuses and skeletons. Extremely informative but dont go during the week, too many kids.
Great place lots of oddities
Loved it! Informative & interesting. They are expanding the museum & I definitely want to go back for that!
This place was an amazing place to explore medical oddities! Totally recommend!
Spending a beautiful afternoon indoor looking at human body parts wasnt a perfect day. It was very informative and you saw things that you never saw or would want to see again. Dont skip the outdoor garden especially on a nice sunny day.
Amazing collection of oddities. Not a place for the dont of heart, but if you are into unique attraction, youll love it. Take your time going through so you can see it all. Parking is usually good. Cost is not bad. Several displays really stick with you after you see them. Not for little kids, but elementary age and up will appreciate Müttet Museum.
Super gross and very interesting! Will definitely be back.
Not for the weak of heart or stomach, this small museum has a beautifully humanizing way of displaying medical specimens. Youll leave with a deep appreciation for modern medicine, antibiotics, and reconstructive surgery. No pictures allowed inside the collection out of consideration for the donors but sketching is allowed. Unique and unforgettable.
Amazing museum that exhibits medical history, as well as the only museum to exhibit a piece of Einsteins brain!
I heard they have Albert Einsteins brain in here.Search it up.
Amazingly disturbing. A museum of medical oddities. There’s no pictures allowed inside and it is small - so when it is busy it’s a tight squeeze in there. Don’t miss the gardens before you leave
This museum is a must for any medical professional. The exhibits here a totally fascinating. Einsteins brain is on display here. There is no photography allowed in most of the musuem because the displays are treated with the same respect as any human remains. Many displays actually have living relatives. There is an archive that contains medieval medical books.
An interesting museum of medicine. They have lots of skulls and skeletons and different things so see, including the Soap Lady who is self mummified. Not for the weak of stomach but an interesting place to visit.
ABSOLUTELY WOW MUSEUM AND THE STAFF WAS ALSO WELL EDUCATED. EVERYONE SHOULD GO TO THESE INFORMATIVE MUSEUM GOOD MUSEUM
My first time here. A gift for my fiance, amazing museum. If you like medical science, oddities, macabre human specimens; this is the place you!! No bags, no photos and there are lockers to store your stuff.
I loved this place! Interesting and weird at the same time
This museum is truly one of the gems in Philadelphia. Spend a few hours here its a treat. I have loved this museum the first time I stepped in the door more than 30 years ago. Stumble in on a week day if you or your children are into science or medicine you will grow to love it the way I do.
As a medical student I found this very intriguing. To see einsteins brain, body parts broke down and explained in detail! Im definitely returning.
So fascinating! Small building but lots and lots to look at and read. Very educational and eye-opening. Warning: Not for the weak stomachs and not for young children. Some gruesome diseases, gangrene, tumors, sexual organs, babies in jars... No photography allowed. Love the gift shop.
One of the coolest things to see in Philadelphia. A little but creepy, very fun and educational. Lots of different areas covering different topics. Can take a bit of time to get through, not wordy though, but can get crowded.
The most interesting museum ever! So many medical oddities in a grand old building. Not somewhere that I would take children but its great for adults looking for something different. No photography is allowed inside so youll have to go to see more
Im not a huge museum lover, but this one was the most interesting Ive been to and really made me read everything by all the displays, too. Since were not allowed to take pictures inside, I only got some of the medicinal garden outside, which was both interesting and beautiful. Really worth a stop here though.
Solid meh, not worth the price. Its okay if your really interested in this type of stuff.
A really great museum and learning center for those predisposed to the profession. For the layman it is nothing more than a medical Ripleys museum. The civil war display was of interest to the history minded but cannot carry an entire visit unless the visit has a purpose. No pictures allowed and not recommended for younger kids.
Today was my second visit. There were far more people today than last time. It is a great museum. There are lots of really cool exhibits. Unfortunately, with so many people in there, it was very hard to move around.
Only photos I could take were outside they do not allow them inside. Otherwise very Interesting museum. Medical students should come and see the variety of historical that it has to offer.
Awesome exhibit, worth the $18 but dont go on a Saturday if you can avoid it. It really was their busiest day.
Me and my friend enjoyed this museum
Its smaller than I thought it would be. Some interesting stuff but the 20.00 entrance fee is a bit much. For me it was a one and done visit.
Missed a 6th grade trip here when I was a kid n have wanted to go ever since. Really cool and interesting artifacts on display. And if you know about the Mütter, you know most of it is actual human remains as the display pieces.
Incredibly fascinating (nerd-geek style) museum. A great collection of skulls, skeletons (included the skeletons of two people with fibrodisplasia ossificant progressiva), objects extracted from peoples airways and digestive system, a few organs, several fetuses with deformities. Price 20 dollars. Totally worth it.
I have always read about this museum and how weird and interesting it was. I decided to make the stop while visiting family in Baltimore. Being in the medical field, this was extremely interesting and fascinating to see all the medical anomalies and oddities. I could have spent hours there if it wasnt for the timed parking..... Anyways, I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in anatomy or the human body. There are some really crazy things to see here!!
Amazing experience. The first room gets stuffy at times with little room to move about but after you head downstairs things start to open up. Great displays with tons to look at.
Amazing! Such cool stuff
Not a huge variety of medical items. I wouldnt call these oddities but pathologies. Oddities should not be used for something that was once affecting a patient. Also no picture allowed in 2018? If the purpose is educational, why no pictures? Honestly, 18 dollars and no pictures allowed. I would definitely visit it but dont expect too much.
Very interesting and informative.A bit on the pricey side for the size but not ridiculous. Some of the displays were hard to read through the wavy glass. The visitors there were very reverent of the remains.Overall worth the trip
So Fascinating! Go early to avoid crowds, it is a smaller museum BUT worth visiting if your in the medical field or interested in medical anomalies. No strollers or back packs allowed, no photographs allowed. We personally could spend hours reading and looking, or you could zip right through it depends on how in depth you want to get. Parked right behind the museum so that was convenient but a little pricey.
Very cool collection of medical specimens with a friendly staff.
If youre looking for medical oddities, this is the place. Interesting specimens on display at every turn. No photos allowed inside, so youll just have to trust me. A definite must for any visit to Philly.
Wicked Brilliant. Although, very unhappy that the herb garden is no longer open to the public, but you have to pay admission to visit it. That stinks. After all these years of it being open, someone had to ruin it for every one? That sucks. The museum, thou, is fabulous and worth seeing.
An amazing museum and Library. This is the place to go if you research the History of Medicine and Science
