Small but very well done, the National Park Service has done a bang up job making an old fort into a beautiful area to wander, enjoy the sunshine, wander the long corridors inside the fortifications, and receive a good education about how European conflicts as well as the American Civil War were part of the history of this area. Because of the beautiful open areas and underground tunnels, theres a bit for everyone, including those who like to watch jets and Navy trainer aircraft fly by. If you like history, be sure to spend time to read the various boards in the small but well organized visitor center.
Definitely something to experience! Learned a great amount of history about our country I never had a clue about while being awed by the craftsmanship and attention to detail put into a building made by a relatively small number of hands that werent even free men. Its a humbling experience and absolutely worth the time to visit and walk through the structures.
Absolutely loved this place. It made me feel like a kid wandering the long halls and tunnels that connects everything. I pretty much had the place to myself, and it was even a bit creepy in a good way. If you are in the area at the lighthouse or naval air museum, this is a must to check out.
Fantastic National Park location. You can explore most of this fort on your own and also get a great view of Fort Pickens across Pensacola Bay. The ranger tour is available on the weekends and is well worth it to learn the how the fort was constructed and its history. Highly recommend the Advanced Readout tour if you are more adventurous. This second site (not far from the visitor center) is only accessible with the ranger tour and takes you through the abandoned structure complete with dark passageways and potential encounters with bats, snakes and other local fauna. Not suitable for young children. The fort is located on the Naval Air Station, so you will need to pass through a checkpoint and show ID to get to the fort. There is limited RV parking at the visitor center, so you may want to call ahead and ensure that there is space to park if you are driving a larger rig.The Junior Ranger program for this site is part of the larger Gulf Islands National Seashore booklet, but there are a couple of activities based on exploring the fort or walking on the .5 mile woodland nature trail near the visitor center.
This was a great place to visit while in Pensacola. We walked all throughout the fort and it gave us some great photo opportunities too.We went in the morning and it wasn’t crowded and enjoyed seeing how it was built and the different stories throughout.I’d highly recommend it for a great stop on your trip.
Wonderful old fort open to walk through above ground and below. It is a National Park so bring your annual pass.
Awesome history. Its humid during the walk inside. Bring water. The staff in the shop are nice. Great place to visit.
Great little park and is well maintained look into the history of the United States. You can pretty much go around the whole fort and its tunnels. Has a great view of the bay from the fort.
This was so cool! Well, it was actually very hot and muggy, but what a neat place! The brochure for the walking tour was perfect, but we also watched a documentary about the fort before visiting. I think the documentary was on the NPS site. We were there for a little over an hour. Wear good walking shoes and bring water if visiting in the heat.
Great Park. Walking around on the inside reminded me of Dry Tortuga National Park. I wish there was a guided tour for the park but the rangers at the front entrance was willing to talk with us about the history of the Fort.
Very disappointed only military can visit. Its on the base
Very cool place to visit even if youre not a history buff. Park ranger was very friendly and knowledgeable. I wouldnt go in summer because theres not great air flow unless wind is blowing in. Plan to spend some time here because there is a lot to see as most of it is open to the public and its a fairly large place. To see it all you have to be willing to climb many uneven steps, sometimes in narrow spaces. Our small children made it through, but with a great deal of hand holding and slowing down.
It was cool to see but with no guides to tell you about it kinda left it at 3 starts. I did enjoy it.
Great fort. Able to walk completely through it including tunnels that take you to each section. Was also lucky enough to watch the Blue Angels practice .
Fort Barrancas has only a couple information placks that you can read, and yet I learned so much history from the two gentlemen who worked there at the fort. In the gift shop there is a small model showing the fort at which these two men shared a lot of history about the fort and Pensacola, FL. After asking all the questions you can think of, you then get to explore the fort. I hope you have as enjoyable of a visit to the fort as I did last month.
Nice fort to check. Its more in the historical end than architectural. When i went, it was self guided tour. The fort doesn’t have elaborative information at each interest point. Still worth it to check for the location and history.
Took some beautiful pictures there.
Ive been to many forts and This one is the spookiest when its raining lol. Its really worth the visit.
What an amazing fort full of history and the kids will love all the tunnels.
Great stop for the family. Free. Educational. Just be careful if you are claustrophobic.
Amazing piece of history
Lots of steps but fantastic history and worth it! Beautiful views. (Sad and rude someone decided to put graffiti on the stone walls inside.) It is family friendly. My younger kids loved all the steps and long hallways, looking out the narrow windows, etc.
This is an incredibly well preserved fort, one of several that once protected the port at Pensicola. The brick work is impressive.
We had the best time...not as big as fort pickens yet still Stanley beautiful....alot of tunnels...plus you can visit the museum of national aviation...plus the historic lighthouse...dont forget to bring water it is hot and they have no water available..
Base is closed to the public. If you want to go to either Ft Barrancus or the Lighthouse or the Naval Museum you are out of luck unless you have military member with you. Website does not state this.
What a fascinating and wonderful place to explore history. Its a self tour so you have plenty of time to see all the marvels this place has to offer. A really amazing architectural find to explore. Easy to get into and out of so the whole family of all ages can enjoy.
Loved exploring this fort as a kid living on NAS Pensacola and found it just as interesting many years later!
A beautiful area to go and explore.
Amazing piece of history the men in the office where so friendly and you could tell they loved there job their excitement in explaining the in and outs of the fort had all of us excited to check it out
Absolutely spectacular exhibit of History. A must-see.
Enjoyed this historical place. Amazing acustics down below. Try it out singing down there in harmony with my daughter and husband was awesome!
Great history, listen to the Rangers. If you are at the Naval Air Museum, make sure to stop here!
Really cool but he prepared to get access to the Navy base to see it.
Very nicely done and worth the time to walk around. Wonderful Ranger and Volunteer on duty today.
The Fort was amazing. Great history lesson!
I enjoy history. Interesting how the coastal defense forts evolved over the years.
Great place to play hide and go seek with grand kids. There is only one way out over draw bridge. Great history lessons here
The history here is amazing. Great place to hike and picnic. One of Pensacolas must see places when you are here.
Very fascinating Fort and it’s history. The structure and property is well maintained and impressive to walk through. My kids and I enjoyed our visit to this Fort. It’s a must see when you get a chance.
Nice place walk around
Nice piece of history. This fort seems to be very well preserved. Enjoyed the visit with my husband and 4 year old. There were lots of steps but my 4 year old managed pretty well.
Visited fort barrances and also fort Pickens so many neat historical places all through Pensacola
It has a few great displays, such as the gunpowder room. The fort is very well preserved. There is no modern electrical conduit and lighting. It is as when built. The craftsmanship of the masonry is beautiful. This fort is full of arches, curves, and corners.
Most restored fort on the coast. Small but very cool.
I am so glad I stopped here, this is a must-see! Everything from the way its built, the way they set the Windows, although theres no glass, theyre set so that they can offer protection while still being able to fire rifles through. Just an amazing experience when you think about the history. Definitely worth the visit.
Very interesting. They even had a couple of rooms that still had the powder barrels and stuff in it. It was also very dry to walk around through not like Fort Pickens which is wet everywhere.
Was very nice for a day trip.
Nice walk and history. Make sure you start early or on a cool day
Pretty cool place to visit. The fort gets very hot and humid inside so dress cool.
Wonderful historical fort. Amazing the size and how they built it. Give yourself time to explore the whole fort.
Very interesting and well kept old Fort. When you are done with the Navy Musuem take a look at this - its 2 minutes drive away. Tunnels are amazing and a good way to keep cool or out of the sun.
Lots of steps but definitely worth it. There was a great view from different angles and it was nice to.learn some history! Very glad we went!!
Gee if I could give you ZERO Stars I would, how about being open on Tuesday OR Wednesday and close on another day of the week? Some of us work weekends and only have the middle of the week off...
Really impressive structure that seems quite under-trafficked. Over four million hand shaped bricks, great views of the bay, and some cool cannons and history.
An amazing and truly enjoyable walk through the maze like corridors of the fort. If you have one, bring a good camera! There are some incredible photo opportunities given the way the light plays here.
Really neat old fort, that they have done a great job restoring, and preserving for everyone to see.
Very historic and well preserved history. Bonus...quiet,
Fun to explore, well maintained, LOTS of stairs/elevation steep, on active military base near air museum and air field where blue angels practice. Small park fee - free with military family pass.
Very interesting historical site. The park rangers were extremely wonderful to my kids and even honored them as Jr. Rangers with a badge and everything after they did some work in a workbook. We will definitely go back.
Very cool to see! Explore the grounds after you see the lighthouse. We had the whole place to ourselves on a Thursday.
This was a great family experience. Fun and educational. We did the self guided tour, reading from the pamphlet as we went. It was surreal to think about the men who fought and died as you walk in their footsteps. It is always exciting to experience history exploring the battlegrounds of wars of the past. The park ranger was very polite, helpful, and knowledgeable.
This place was neat. You get to travel through a pristine military fortification. My kids (and I!) Loved running through the arches and tunnels of the defensive fighting positions of the scarp and counterscarp. Its a formidable fort and really cool to see up close and personal.Really great add-on experience if you are visiting the Naval Aviation Museum.
We had an incredible time at the Fort with Ranger Flake. He gave us some very interesting info. Definitely check it out. At NAS.
Not much too see in terms of artifacts, but it has some cool history behind it.
Incredible place to visit and discover history. Beautiful place to explore and very photogenic!
Always love going there and walking through the fort. Took my 2 yr old grandson there today and he loved it
Great place to bring the family. One of the coolest forts we have walked through.
Nice place to visit!
Or of interesting history. Well maintained.
Not a lot to see but there are tunnels to explore and fun finding your way around. Obviously has historical significance.
I was the coolest fort Ive seen since fort pickens
Nice park with very friendly and knowledgeable park rangers. Interesting history of the fort
Great history lesson. One of many forts around Florida.
Interesting fort! Friendly staff!
Love all of the forts but this one doesnt have much to look at and part of it was closed for repairs when I visited. Not much to explore so dont expect to stay long here There is a neat little nature trail right outside the main entrance.
Awesome experience beautiful fort with a lot of history behind it
Not a big fort but was nice to visit and learn about.
Its a great look at our military and their fighting conditions in history.
Really cool fort and historical site located on Pensacola Naval Air Station. Fun for all ages as there are a series of passageways and tunnels within the fort. Was interesting to learn that the Barrancas fort expansion and Ft. Pickens (across the bay) were both built by slave labor.
It was really beautiful fort to walk around. It was extremely hot the day we visited, so no Ranger led tours. We took the paper guide and read through the things we wanted to learn about. I highly recommend it to anyone.
Great historical site. Must be included in old brick forts tour.
We had a great time exploring the fort. It is actually very cool during the hot summer day.
Closed on Wednesdays what we could see was great. This is at the air force base. We went to wrong entrance first and neither guard told us you could not see inside as they are closed on this day. Check times.
An amazing fort. I really appreciated the rangers help.
Nice history of Florida.
Awesome place to visit. So much history
Nice place to walk around and getting some local history. It doesn’t take too much time to walk around and makes for great pictures.
Beautiful place to visit, fun time exploring the fort.
Awesome place we had a great time... family day out
BLUF: Amazing views, history, and experience.Ft. Barrancas is the 2nd largest fortification complex of the Pensacola area historic forts. Located on base at NAS Pensacola, it is accessible to civilians and military alike. There are lots of tunnels, turrets, cannons, and trails to see and explore. The gift shop is nice and they have stamps for your national parks passport! One of my favorite places to go relax on a Sunday afternoon.
Near a lot of local landmarks and the Naval Aviation Museum. Great place to learn about civil war forts and military.
Totally awesome experience here, take the ranger tour of the advanced redoubt. Its well worth it and an afternoon well spent
Great piece of history hidden on NAS Pensacola.
Free for military, nice self guided tour. Some tunnels are very freaky.
Fort Barrancas is a phenomenal multi-national American historic site as it has been occupied by Spain, France, England, the Confederacy, and the United States. In 1559, Spain established a settlement in Florida on Pensacola Bay but the site was abandoned soon afterward. Spaniards revived the settlement in 1698, surrendered it to the French in 1719, regained it by treaty in 1722, ceded it to the English in 1763, and repossessed it by force in 1781. From 1839–1844, the historic Spanish fort on the hill was reconstructed. The US deactivated Fort Barrancas on April 15, 1947, following World War II.
Very strong fort built of bricks
Makes you pause to think about those who served.
Was down in Pensacola Fl for a symposium on a naval aircraft and Geocaching and the fort was a location of an earth cache the fort was closed but we did get to walk around the outside of the fort it is worth going see
Beautiful place
