Huckleberry loop is a very nice trail. Majority of the trail is under shade. Start heading in the lower part (left of the fork) if you want an easier hike back (specially if you bring your kids, which we saw a number along the trail). Start heading the upper part of the loop (right of the fork) if you want a more challenging hike back. A hike in the spring will treat you with nice flowers. Theres a only a few spots in the parking lot but theres a vault toilet. You can also park on the side of the road outside the parking lot.
Great place to hike, not for wheel chair. Some step parts for a good work our
What a nice place for a hike. A somewhat hidden EBRPD treasure. Not to be missed!
Very nice trail with interesting signs about the local plants in this unique micro biome. Be wary that the trails.are very narrow, which is awkward during a pandemic.
This place is great! Most of the trail is shaded and you can even pick and eat the actual Huckleberries!
Found this place by accident and glad I did. Nice trail and gorgeous views
Very cool and shady trail with lots of rare plants that only grow here! Great views of mt diablo
For those who dont know about this gem or do but havent peeped Huckleberry - Im sure all who have been will agree w/ me when I say prepare to be legitimately AWED. Even better is that its fairly small so u wont have to carry your jaw for too long. I equate it to a primeval forest. Has some of the most beautiful giant trees as majestic as tall as any redwood. Flora is almost as if its been put there to pose for another jigsaw puzzle selfie. Then you hit the spot where MT. D is perfectly framed, & you know that anybody who isnt there when u are... is missin out then there then though-
Good place to go on a hot day because these trails are well shaded. They are a bit narrow during COVID19 though if you need to pass someone coming your way.
RIP Donald Stanifer ️ May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace ️
Trail can get narrow and close to a slight drop (for those worried about covid or heights). Views are fantastic, shade most of the way, and not crowded on a Friday afternoon.
Quiet lovely walk in woods. But narrow trail during cov - not good choice yet.
Huckleberry is a beautiful place to hike. Lots of luscious vegetation surrounding the trails. I am so glad to live just a couple of miles from this awesome walk. If you want to avoid the crowds, go early. Today, July 17th, I went hiking at 7:45 am for an hour, and only saw 5 people. I wore layers, and found myself bundling up in the fog, and taking off layers when I was going up hill or when the sun was out.
This 2.5 mile singletrack loop is beautifully maintained, lightly visited (a little busier than usual during COVID), mostly shaded, and, uniquely for this area, NOT overgrown with poison oak. Great Diablo views, lots of fern, oak, manzanita. Hills get your cardio going but not too challenging; nice connections to Sibley and Redwood for longer loops.
Nice little hike with some beautiful views of the watershed. There is a restroom.
Go during fall to pick huckleberries. Great view at sunset if my diablo.
Wonderful hiking gem in the Oakland hills.
Gorgeous, rain or shine. Nice hike of about 4 miles. Lots of people with dogs.
Good hike, interesting area
Beautiful place to hiking
What to learn something about the local fuana and flora? Enjoy pretty shaded enclosed loop trails? Wish you could find a nice hike to take young hikers and out of town to without facing the mass population?Did you answer yes to more than one of these questions? This is the place for you, the guided tour of the loop let you learn about some local plants while staying cool. This less populated trail is a great choice for young hikers who take more time to get places. Plus, the views are stunning.
Stunning hikes through the countryside. Nice bird watching.
Been there multiple times, great for families with kids
This was a highly shaded and very narrow path trekking course with lots of slopes and tree tunnels. When walking the path, one side is next to a cliff, but don’t worry it’s safe. Overall it was a very beautiful scenery.
A beautiful place to take a hike. Only shame is that people leave trash in some places, but I really enjoy going there.
Stunning and some easy sections
Fabulous hike through East Bay hills.
Easy Shaded Trail For Kiddos ;)
A great collection of indigenous plant life with a moderate hike up and down hills amazing views and scents
Hiked in the short loop trail with a five year old and had a great time. The shorter loop was well maintained with moderate elevation changes. There were plenty of places to stop and enjoy the surroundings. We especially enjoyed the signs describing the local plants.
If you want to avoid elevation you can do a 1-15 yo-yo. You can also extend that by going just past #15 and go right at the fork towards Skyline.
Beautiful. Some of the trails are pretty tight with poison oak menacing inches away. Of course, it is the outdoors so what can you do?
Norcal scrub & forest. Plenty of both shade & light. Incredible views. Most longer trails have significant steep portions. Drinking water & bathrooms at staging grounds. Can be very hot in the warmer months, but again: Plenty of shaded options.
An incredibly beautiful place to walk, but the trails are extremely narrow, and theres poison oak everywhere. It makes it very hard to get around people because one or the other person has to step off of the trail into the poison oak. Also, its hard to really enjoy the views, spending all my time looking down at my feet to make sure Im not walking into poison oak.
Beautiful hiking trail. Its green and lush because of the rain this year. Narrow in many places.
Self-guided trail-loop featuring the rare pallid manzinita, huge oaks, bay trees huckleberry, very rare leatherwood, iris. Upper loop mostly shaded and easy. Smells so good. Mt Diablo views here and there. Feels magical.
This was a great little spot to visit for a walk in in the woods. The park provides several picnic tables (in shaded spots) along with a nice/relatively clean outhouse. We even managed to find parking on a Saturday late morning, there are limited spaces. Would stop by here again
Narrow but beautiful trail off the beaten path.
Easy trails in the East Bay hills. Edible huckleberries along the paths.
A rare plant community is the highlight of this park. Loop routes require descent/climbing but you can do an out&back route for a flatter trip. All trails connect to the larger east Bay ridge network - from here you can hike north to Sibley or south to Redwood Regional.
Peaceful great to hear the wildlife
Great little park with challenging trails. Limited parking but boasts a new, clean bathroom. Watch out for poison oak!
Here os the sad thing. The site, the Huckleberry trail was acquired by the East Bay Regional Park District, aka., the State of California, stile the land from my family via Eminent Domain. We had 12 acres in Canyon, Ca. We NEVER wanted to sell, or to leave Canyon. They MADE us leave, they took our land to make available to the public a hiking trail. They had thousands of acres before. They did not need or land. Now, trying to get back into my home town, there is nothing available. I was able to rent a 12 ft vintage trailer with no insulation, temporarily. 12 acres to 12 feet. Not a family friendly nor a law one can an fight adv and win. Bestie Eminent Domain. Beware the parks. They offer nice things, but acquire them by displacing entire families from their homes, their history, their friends, their land.
Nice place
Magical gem - we went on a wet rainy day and for the most part which made the whole place glisten. we suggested to our neighbors who went the next day and absolutely loved it.
Stopped by for a quick break during my drive. Saw multiple signs saying no dogs while one lady proceeded to head down the trail with her dog. Didnt stay long, grabbed a pamphlet, but I will probably go back if Im in the area and prepared for a nice walk.
This is an excellent place for a coastal arboreal nature walk. Trails are well maintained and rangers periodically patrol the area. Parking is free and no admission chargePicking flowers or taking wildlife is strictly prohibited and being loud is discouraged.
Beautiful, wooded Oasis in the middle of the city. Great walk.
Lots of variety in a 2 mile hike. Dark, thick woods. Shady creeks. Sunny hill tops with great views. Well maintained stairways. Safe for children. Not wheelchair accessible.
Dont go there. I want it to myself.
Beautiful spot to hike. Small parking lot but can park just outside along the road. Trailhead has a couple shaded picnic tables, a bathroom and a water fountain. The loop is 1.7 miles, mostly shaded - upper half is easy but lower half of loop is fairly moderate with some switchbacks. Nice markers along trail that describe vegetation. Mt Diablo is visible from the highest point.
This is a true gem, no entry fees and truly charming paths identifying native species as you traverse the landscape
Awesome gem tucked away in Oakland. The huckleberries are in season now so theyre ripe and absolutely delicious! Shaded hike with diverse foliage. Id say is doable for anyone who is active. The pathways can be a little confusing, so just make sure you follow the posts for huckleberry. Check it out!
Beautiful trails with lots of tree shade to keep you cool during hot sunny days. Trails are narrow with drop offs at areas. Dogs are not allowed on the upper trail in Huckleberry.
Great mixed terrain hiking with a variety of easy to moderate trails. Sometimes youll find it nearly empty and sometimes you will see someone around almost every turn but overall a good choice if youre looking for a weekend hike.
Beautiful, hidden park. Saw a fox!
Very nice area to hike.
Great and scenic. Rambling walkways with varied paths with different levels of exertion.Good place to perform walking meditation
Hidden gem up in the hills of Oakland. Short hiking trails with interpretive information. Beautiful views!
Great hiking location. Can do any length home. A bit dangerous, but I see people bringing small children.
Magical little trail that is good for a quick hike or a longer excursion, and great for trail runners. Lots of beautiful trees and plants to explore with info about them post along the path.
Beautiful and chill relaxing spot. Not dog friendly though!
Really easy trials and lovely scenery. Great place to go if you have some time to kill.
Informative botanical plaques dot this trail the meanders through a variety of shaded environments in the Oakland hills
A magic place! Definitely worth a visit.
Nice 2.7 mile hike. Mostly shaded. Apparently supposed to be a lot of interesting plants and stuff but I didnt see much in late December at least. A couple geocaches hidden here too.
Nice well marked trail, good for beginners
So beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful hike, close to town
A beautiful but low-traffic park with actual huckleberries
Great, quiet, serene place to hike with interesting facts along the way about California plants
Great spot for shady strolls and fern-tastic adventures.
Theres a nice, fairly easy loop hike here. Be sure to pick up one of the info pamphlets so you can learn about the different local plants. There is a bathroom, but no water at the start.
It was my first time and its easy to follow the loop. The forest smell was amazing.
Great place to relax
Nice place to hike. Probably better in the morning than in the evening just because it’s along the eastern face of the ridge.
Nice pics but a very narrow path
Beautiful trails! Mostly single file. Lots of shade. Lillies too!!
Beautiful park with a lovely hiking trail. Would definitely return.
Awesome hike, great views
Come get your nature! Free huckleberries!
Small but beautiful. Hiking trails link up to other neighboring parks.
One of my fav trails in the area for some quick exploring.
One of my favorite short hikes. Good views, and not to far from the city
Great walking paths, cool primeval forest feel. Ill be back.
One of the most beautiful trails in the Oakland hills
Lots of hidden hiking trails!
Nicely curated trail signs, a good walk in the woods!
