I really enjoyed going to this zoo. I thought all of the animals had pretty good space of their own but maybe some could use a little more space for running. Ex: lions, tigers, mini horses, monkeys. Everyone else seemed to have a lot of space and everyone seemed very well taken care of. Although the white tailed deer looked a little skinny, maybe they are rescued and one of the bucks hurt its antler so maybe they need a little extra supervision. Also the alligator exhibit needs some work done on the bridge. I feel like the fence on the bridge has too big of a gap between it and the bridge and the wooden boards need some reinforcement. Overall, I really enjoyed my encounter with the animals and next time I visit south Carolina I will remember this place and come back.

The sadness that comes from these cages is horrifying. The love is not there the care is not there and physically shown at this “zoo”. Let’s start with admission prices. It’s too cheap too even begin, the first thing you walk into is a front lobby barn with snacks and birds and I smelt something dead halfway down the barn. I get the soda machine for a Pepsi I put in a dollar, it takes my dollar without giving me my soda, I was already so devastated pulling in and paying admission I walked right back in and asked for a soda and how the machine took my dollar, they were wicked nice about it. But that alone, showed me this place is not ran well at all even though I’m sure they put in there best efforts it’s not kept up. When you walk out, there’s an abandoned concession stand that sells hotdogs, popcorn ect. It’s completely shut down and mangled. This is a huge alternative too making money, there losing money with that concession stand closed down. As far as I could tell, there was picnic tables that could have been open too the public but there away in the woods where stuff is overgrown and not trimmed down and I had worn sandals during this trip, highly recommend sneakers cause I got attacked my fire ants not just by the picnic tables, and seeing cages empty and not utilized or even safe. There cages are worn and not being fixed but there working on other things for who knows what. These animals are literally fed peanuts and cat food and corn grain to hand out which you realistically have to throw over a second fence cause whoever built these cages have no common sense on constructing a cage. Majority of the animals were highly sick and dehydrated and malnourished especially the bears and the tiger that they have in there is hairless due too a “disease” which I don’t think is true at all looking at all the other unhealthy animals there, the bears are losing hair too so it’s too the lions. That tiger needs to get out of there and needs treatment immediately and rehabilitation. He was literally crying and panting around his cage in distress out of every animal in this place the tiger was on a death limb. The moneys we’re eating vegetables. There’s this antique barn that’s not cleaned up or kept up at all. The kangaroos aren’t there. Again when you walk around too where there supposed to be, you smell something dead. I did not go here too see sick malnourished animals that were literally abandoned and unloved, not accounted for. I can’t even go back cause I don’t wanna see that again, if you are an animal lover please just take yourself and your kids 3 hours too Columbia too see a better and healthier zoo. I left feeling so sad and guilty. I felt so helpless. Phone calls and reviews only do so much. Close waccatee zoo down and give them up.

As others have reiterated, this was just a sad experience for our family, and the animals that are kept on this property. We came on a Saturday mid-day, and the place was nearly empty except for another family. The staff helpfully took our money to get in, but you never saw them again in the zoo to give actual information about the animals throughout the zoo. Dont expect to have any shows that show off any of the animals either, it is completely self-guided. The animal cages were in poor shape, and needed a good mow. I was worried leaning over the railing over the river if the wood was even going to hold. There was an alligator in the water and it wouldnt have been pretty to fall in! If there was a kangaroo, it certainly was hidden somewhere in the weeds. The zoo got more depressing as you got further in it, seeing the condition of the big cats & bears and how small their cages were just made me want to leave. I dont think I will ever be back to this zoo, and I do hope some action will be made soon to shut this place down and give these animals the life they deserve.

We started going to this zoo about 10 years ago. We have always enjoyed it and I couldnt wait to take my kids this year. The standard of care for the animals, enclosures & grounds has drastically declined. My daughter wondered why the animals were sick, The bears had growths on the side of his face and was missing hair, the mountain lion looked like it hadnt eaten in a while & there was so many enclosures that were rusted & over grown. They need to sale the old cars and put the money back into the zoo. Build bigger enclosures for the lions & regravel pathways. We had a stroller that was covered in mud at the end of the visit. They also need to fix the wooden bridges that cross over the pond & stream, it had a few boards that were falling down. I didnt want to write this review because it has always truly been a great experience but today I was so disappointed. Unless alot changes we will not be going back.

5 hours was barely enough time for all of the cool animals at the Waccatee Zoo. There were peacocks everywhere, and an assortment of grazing animals at the entrance. Most of the animals you can feed even let you pet them. Make sure to buy a bag of peanuts; a cup is not enough! I was a little concerned about the large cats in such small cages, and saw one ape attack his own leg, which was strange. There were a few animals pacing, like the cougar and the tiger. Some of the animals were clearly very old. Im not an expert, and the staff who care for the animals seemed very knowledgeable. Overall, it was a great day, and everyone seemed very nice.

This place has the potential to be amazing, but there are so many animals in horrendous conditions. The snakes broke my heart the most. Cages full of poop, sheds, filthy bedding and dirty water. Most are without heat and very deathly thin. So many animals in such a small area with so much open land available to be used. All the exotics look bad but the domestics look good. I just pray they fix things up and they could become a wonderful zoo with many interesting animals.

So I took my lady and the kiddos to this zoo that we have been to several times throughout the years. We were soo excited, until we arrived. The food containers were empty, the animals looked very sad and neglected. Im not an advocate for pita or any other organization, but its very clear that the animals are dying, and the grounds look like its an abandoned ghost zoo. The black bear, has severe hot spots (probably also mange) as well as the tiger. The kangaroo was alone in a very small fence, in a cage grown up with months of growth. The bridges are rotting, and have boards that are loose, trees have fallen and taken out fences that have not been repaired. In conclusion, I would not recommend this facility at all. It is run down, and the property and the animals do NOT get the treatment they need. If you dont have the money or man power to run the zoo, CLOSE THE DOORS!!!! ANIMAL CRUELTY IS NOT COOL.ANY ZOO THAT LOOKS ABANDONED NEEDS TO BE CLOSED!All of the comments on here saying this zoo is the greatest or the staff is amazing bs is just that hot steamy bs... I did not take pictures because it bothered me to the point that Im not going to promote this behavior.Shame on you if you think this is how humans care for animals that are pinned and cant fend for themselves... spend a day or two in some of those empty cages that are everywhere and see how you feel about it then!

This zoo should be shutdown! I visited Wacatee Zoo approximately 6 years ago with my family and I can say it absolutely disgusts me to read peoples positive reviews about this terrible place. This is animal ABUSE. All enclosures were to small, had no greenery, most animals did not have fresh water nor food, and many appeared anxious. The bigger cats were pacing and clearly in rough shape. Just because the law says you can own these types of animals, does not mean you are at all fit. I left in tears and instantly made a report to PETA. I have kept up with the petitions to close this zoo ever since. The owners should be ashamed of themselves.

Review №75

Bottom line up front: Considering the price and overall experience I would rate this a 4.5 stars. Knowing you cant rate a 4.5 start I asked my three kids (11, 9, and 6) what I should rate this zoo and they all said 10 stars! If you are looking for a high price zoo (like the Baltimore or National zoo in DC) that only accept and show health animals and have very limited animal interaction or if you are looking for highly funded rescue animal missions like in Buffalo NY then you might not enjoy this zoo. If you are looking for a cheap zoo to have a good time at, want lots of animal interaction without all of the crowds then this is the place for you!Honest review: I consider all things when doing a review and I take reviews very seriously. When looking at the reviews of this zoo I had my concerns but I am so glad we decided to try this zoo out.Price: The zoo is half the price of other zoos in the area. It is a great value for what you get! Not only is the admission very reasonable but the feed for the animals, drinks, and wagon rentals are all very reasonable.Feeding the animals: Nearly all the animals can be fed. I am personally surprised how many reviews had negative reviews and wrong information regarding the feeding. The truth is we bought two large bags of feed for the 9 of us. My kids had a blast, I had a great time and my father loved feeding all the animals. The two large bags were gone at the end of our time at the zoo. The only animals you cant feed were the animal that are carnivorous (wont eat the feed), the ones on special diets (very few animals), and the animals that WILL bite you (yes you can still feed them but just not hand feed them). Yes, all animals bite (imagine that!) so there are some signs that say feed with caution as animals MAY bite. I personally fed all the animals with those signs and was not bitten once. The kids fed them with adult supervision with no issues. The animals are well used to people feeding them.Variety: One review I saw said most of the animals (80 percent) were goats. Completely wrong. Yes there was lots of goats in lots of the areas but not even close to 80 percent. Even if someone said 40 percent were goats I would be surprised. There are a ton of animals and reptiles. We saw fish, turtles, tons of birds, lizards, snakes, monkeys/apes, cattle, foxes, goats, water buffalo, bears, and more!Walking trails: All the trails were very fun to walk. There are three well maintained trails. We had 9 people and baby in a stroller. Even the older adults had no issues walking the level and cleared pathways. The stroller had NO issues and could go everywhere.Condition of animals: You have to keep in mine the owners accept all animals and most of the animals are older or have been injuries at one point in time. I am not an expert (as many people are trying to be) but I didnt see any animals being mistreated. We did see some older animals but you cant fix old. If an animal is old what are you going to do with them? The owners have decided to keep them and take care of them. The only real issues I saw was the bear cage was a little small but they did have a large play area they were not using.Condition of cages: Not as clean and well kept as a hugely funded zoos. The cages could be cleaner or some repairs could be beneficial but it is not as bad as some people are making it out to be. The cages are not bad enough to actually be of any harm to the animals, its just not as pleasant to the eyes as a new cage.Overall I would recommend to anyone.

You get to feed them and pet most of them. There are signs throughout each enclosure informing guests if they can be fed or not and it was very informative. They provide a detailed map for you with some nice views of the property. Peacocks are EVERYWHERE and very exciting to watch. The staff members were very knowledgeable of the animals and showed a very loving attitude and appreciation for them. This place is truly disturbing. I have never wrote a google review but people need to know how mistreated these poor animals are. My husband and I took our 16 month old daughter and even she looked extremely concerned. The people running this place are not at all maintaining the living environments for these animals. There is plenty of space the could be utilized and work to be done to better this place that was probably once beautiful. The animals live in terrifyingly small spaces and some are even ripping their own hair out due to stress. Small goats have more room then the 2 bears and 2 lions. I am beyond disturbed and will not forget about these poor animals being completely mistreated. Do not give these people your money they are clearly not using it for the better good of the animals. Something needs to be done.

It just doesnt seem like they have the training, resources and expertise to handle large animals like lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, etc. Many of the animals were in extremely confined spaces and looked visibly stressed and unhealthy. Also, a tree had fallen down on a part of a separation fence creating a huge safety issue (there are alligators in the park), but the ladies who run the place had no idea when we brought it to their attention.
