The Riverview Theater in South Minneapolis is truly a gem. I love the early 1950s look and their big lobby with vintage furniture is a gym. Also, the Riverview does a great job picking movies that are in there second-run theater. Often hard to find movies such as JoJo Rabbit. They will keep it there for a while because it seems to get a following and others come to see it. Also the prices are so reasonable, $2.50 for a matinee. You cant beat that. In the lobby check out the history of this theater that opened I believe, in 1951. There are congratulatory telegrams from famous stars such as Rosalind Russell and Kim Novak who wrote to honor this new theater. A nice feature of this theater is that sometimes, when the movie is really good, the audience will clap at the end of the movie. That hasnt been done for decades. I like the idea of a historic theater with only one theater in it instead of a Megaplex with 10 or 20 theaters within a huge building. The Riverview has a real soul. I no longer live in South Minneapolis but it is worth the drive from the suburbs to see a movie at Riverview.

I cant race about this place enough. Prices cant be beat. Sure the movies are all second run, but seeing it first isnt what going to the movies is about for be. The theater is beautiful and the popcorn is perfect. The programming is excellent as well. Somehow they find a way to please film buffs, blockbuster fans, and families with kids, all on just one screen. Honestly, I would probably never get to go to the movie theater if it wasnt for Riverview Theater. Thank you so much for loving movies and our neighborhood!

This is our favorite discount theater by far, and the #1 place we go to catch any movies we might have missed the first time around. Tickets are very cheap, and so are concessions. There’s usually plenty of parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, though you may have to walk a couple blocks. The theater itself is very charming and has lots of seating. They even have special screenings of older movies. We saw a late night showing of Friday the 13th here on Friday the 13th a couple years ago, and it was a lot of fun!

The Riverview makes you feel like youre stepping back into the 1950s in all the right ways. Youll never pay more than $3 for a movie, theres a comfortable lounge to relax in while waiting for your movie, and they have the best popcorn in town. They also host fun events such as Sound of Music sing-alongs, and World Cup soccer viewing parties. They host students from the nearby middle school for academic rewards. The Riverview is a valuable neighborhood institution.

A great option if you want to avoid expensive first run movies, or to catch an old favorite. The tickets are $3 or less, and the popcorn and soda combos are also reasonable. They even have real butter topping for the popcorn, if thats your preference. The esthetic is classic, and the theater is great. Ive not sat in a bad seat, yet. The audience is also generally very good. People are not disruptive. The theater also has fun events, like a Summer Late Night movie series and a Lord of the Rings marathon in December. This is a special place. Its a movie theater that, according to the official Riverview Theater website, allows a person to experience movie-going as it was in the 50s. Its true that the building and décor are retro in style, but the Riverview is not just a run-down nostalgia-trap. This is a phenomenal theater, and Ill list a few of my reasons for this. First, its extremely affordable. The tickets are between two and three dollars depending on when the movie is playing, and the concessions are substantially lower priced than what you find at other theaters. I once took a date to the Riverview and bought two tickets, popcorn, and drinks for, like, less than fifteen dollars. Second, the image and sound quality are solid. Up until a few years ago, I didnt realize that this wasnt a given. Some of the other theaters in the area are pretty horrendous when it comes to the presentation of the actual movie, which is sort of what youre paying for. The third (and likely the most important) reason that I love the Riverview Theater is that feels like a true neighborhood theater. I often see people walking a few blocks from their house to see a movie here on a Saturday night and wait in line to buy their tickets. This often leads to a full house, almost as if everyone who lived in the area all packed themselves into a room to watch a movie together. When this happens, there is this incredible energy that I dont know how to explain. Its something else, man.

Very important to the community. Place to watch movies you missed in bigger theatres for like a quarter the price. They make money off of food and drink so the tickets are cheap. Their list of movies showing is updated constantly on their website. If you are someone who doesnt need to see the latest movies within the month of release I highly recommend this place instead. They also hold events where they play movie series like Lord of the Rings and Studio Ghibli movies and you can marathon them with a crowd of fans. Seats are comfy and the viewing angles are fine but if youve been to the nicer seats and screens AMC theatres it wont be anything special.

Incredibly overrated. This 700-seat theater has seats where your legs cant fit and your bottom will ache before the end of the movie because theyre so uncomfortable. Floors were dirty. Long outside winter line at the door. Unorganized concession stand. No parking so you have to walk a couple blocks. The popcorn, which they claim is the best in the world, is just okay and I can make better at home. The night we were there the mens bathroom had no toilet paper. And a few people brought 5-year-old kids to an R-rated movie. The only positive is the price--its super cheap (thus the raves). But even though the 1950s decor is cool to see once it seems dirty on closer inspection. They need to get rid of the seats and put in something modern.

Came back from to find the rear window was smashed, a million pieces of glass in my car and my items gone. The neighborhood had seemed clean and safe and the staff told me it was alright to park there. If they had said bring your valuables in I would have. Police report filed, credit cards were cancelled and Laptop missing. The owner spoke to police and then to me and told me it was a metropolitan area and theft happens. No responsibility about his staffs recommendation of parking there. I told him the least he could do was apologize for their misdirection instead of chastising me.Of course no security cameras on either buildings.I found out later from the police and staff that this was a pattern in that area. That makes it worse that, THEY knew this vandalism was prevalent.Very expensive movie experience. I really wanted to like this place.
