I just voted here for the second time, they made it so easy and clapped when I walked in because there were only 3 other people voting at the time and they were happy that they had something to do. Please god let him win ag....
Visiting this museum was part of an enchanted afternoon in Milwaukees Lower East Side. Youll have to decide for yourself whats the most appealing: the private art collection or the home itself. I ambled thru the museum at my own pace and enjoyed all of its tranquility. While standing on the second floor marble staircase, I watched a wedding reception on the patio below. What a lovely setting for special occasions.
Beautiful old house. Bowling alley in the basement is awesome.
The Charles Allis Art Museum is so beautiful. We chose to have our wedding, and we loved it for its uniqueness. My only complaint is the events coordinator, Megan, is not very good. She was unresponsive to many emails and seemed disorganized. At our final walkthrough just weeks before the wedding with my caterer and wedding, Megan took absolutely no notes. She also was not present at the wedding. Luckily her staff really stepped up, and our wedding was perfect. I would definitely recommend as a wedding venue but do expect to work a little harder and some frustration in working with Megan.
Quaint, historic and intimate setting. You can really get up close to be wonderful items on display.
This museum is personal and quirky. Its easy to feel that it was once a home
Once a month they offer a free day at the Charles Allis Art Museum! It was smaller than expected and many rooms have been closed off or transitioned to new art instead of the original pieces that were in the home. It is not really a good place to take young kids but is a nice place to experience a little art, history and culture with an older group of children or adult friends.
Dont get me wrong, the mansion and every piece in it is amazing! Unfortunately, found that staff is not so knowledgeable about what this place has...this post is for the curating team and communications management team. First off, I had no idea this place had objects that were affiliated to the Milwaukee Art Museum until I asked. I have traveled quite a bit and was in complete and utter shock to see mind blowing pieces just sitting behind other pieces or tucked in a corner with no record or information about them in any written manner for the visitors. For this reason I would say that the curating and the archival team if the museum has any...are sleeping. My recommendation to them is please research your items and share the information with the people! Marketing is bad too, I felt like so many more Milwaukee citizens should know what their city has to offer! Many of these pieces are from other countries and if they were at their place of origin, I know they would be exhibited a lot better. Please make justice to what you have! The showcasing and lack of information is just saddening! Apparently, the same staff manages the Villa Terrace in front of the lake... I suppose both places and pieces within themselves are so beautiful that the people feel satisfied when leaving. The information-giving needs to be stepped up but first history needs to be known by staff before passed on to us explaining the absence of it. I found interesting facts online about the pieces myself....not being written in a booklet of theirs or their website. Im just guessing staff is under-qualified.
Such a beautiful house and an amazing museum filled with tons of history. Its amazon at how original this place is. But the allis family always planned on making it a museum so its in amazing shape and filled with priceless treasures, just hiding in the heart of the lower East side. Must visit and see the amazing stuff in here.
Loved the architecture and history of this building.
This is such a wonderful, underrated museum! Weve been there a few times now and its always really interesting to see how they incorporate the exhibits, which are often a bit more modern, into the historical house. The price of admission is extremely reasonable and all of the staff/volunteers weve dealt with have been helpful and happy to let us wander.
We attended a beautiful wedding there in October! The weather was perfect to walk around the outdoor patio and the large exhibit room was wonderful for dancing. It was fun to explore the museum as the room was being switched from ceremony to reception. Beautiful building! I love the staircase.
Great collection, and a hidden gem for Milwaukee!
Outstanding collection of artwork in the beautiful historic Charles Allis mansion designed specifically to showcase the art and generously donated to the city.
Lovely place for a wedding reception!
Far more impressive than I expected
Catering at the play was great
Such a beautiful place!
The art is a great way to entertain myself while waiting to vote.
Founder of Allis Chalmers implements, and an art collector
Very beautiful museum with famous artists. There were paintings and sculptures and the house is a work of art.
Beautifully preserved.
An East Side Milwaukee gem. Beautiful permanent art collection and great art shows. A must see.
To be hones when I hear a museum I pretty much imagine a place full of artefacts. This one has nothing to do with such things. It is modern and still interesting and appealing. Do visit!
Time out for art and architecture, come and see for yourself. I found it inspirational and interesting!
Very interesting, enjoyed there self guided tour
The Charles Allis is one of the greatest cultural treasures in Milwaukee and one that is little known, even among local artists. This gilded age mansion is reserved in size and exudes a humble midwestern modesty. Charles Allis collected small to mid-sized oil paintings from the Barbizon (French Landscape) and Hudson River (American Landscape) Schools along with an assortment of European and ancient art. This includes several works by Blakelock, Inness, Diaz, Rousseau, Troyon, Dupre, and Camille Corot. Spectacular individual examples by Thomas Moran, Thomas Gainsborough, Winslow Homer, Rosa Bonheur, William Trost Richards, and Paulus Potter are also present. The entrance to the library is flanked by two portraits by Lucas Cranach the Elder, both in their original frames. These works are accented by ancient art from China, Greece, and Rome along with a selection of period furniture and Tiffany glass. If you are a person familiar with fine art this museum is something to behold, a quiet and wonderful place to see paintings.
