Its close by and convenient. My wife had a stroke, and needed exercise to get her back to normal. We have enjoyed taking those walks at the nature center. Often the Cardinals or Blue Jays will drop by and give us something pretty to look at. Sparrows, robins and starlings are frequent companions. Squirrels and chipmunks let us watch them until we get too close for comfort, then take off up a tree or into a burrow. Occasionally deer and other animals drop by to quietly share the park.Sometimes I see the Nature Center called Friendship Woods, which fits. Everyone from park employees to others enjoying it with us seem to be friendly and polite. Its a favorite place for us.
The building is closed right now because of COVID-open only for restrooms. The trails are nice, with many to choose from including a sensory trail. Fall should be gorgeous here and I will be back. Staff person at the nature center was very nice!
I quite liked it here and if I lived closer I would visit more often. The 3 trails are quite short in my opinion but everything is very well kept. Also there are a ton of deer I was shocked with how many I saw! An easy walk but nice scenery
Beautiful, well maintained. Lots of wildlife. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly - willing to help.My daughter had a biology Scavenger hunt and staff pointed us in the right direction for specific plants and trees. Been here before. Its a family favorite.
Beautiful hidden in plain sight location that immediately takes you into wilderness setting. Would highly recommend, just avoid during skunk season with dogs! You will not regret driving here for a walk or to just relax.
Truly a gem in the thick of infinite cement + ball parks + golf coursesbe aware NO ONE wears masks here. one couple was dry heaving half the trail, giving me the creeps.north end esp has terrible traffic noise from 13 mile rdsaw LOTS of deer (easily north of a dozen) fawns + allchipmunks
One of the few nature places around here. Its not very big but its pleasant. I rarely see animals except for squirrels and the occasional deer. Good for riding your bike around or taking your dog for a walk. I think you need a pass to park but you can enter from the subdivision on dequindre and park on the street. Theres a little gate entrance directly to the left of the elementary school.
Trees! This place is kept up so well, and so convenient to go to. My kids loved their nature walk this morning
Nice little trails to take a break from the hustle and bustle. We loved the books along the trail as well.
An awesome place to escape the city for a little bit. The trees are huge and beautiful and you can always catch little critters scurrying around.
The space, as always, is beautiful. The Nature Center itself is closed, but a portable potty is available right off the main lot. I saw low compliance regarding facemasks, so high risk persons should be wary. Not even the Sheriff Dept. personnel donned one as he traveled by bicycle.
Great forest walk!! Short asphalt, local trail to get into nature when you cant get up north, but want that up north feel, right in your backyard!!
5 stars not so much for the center but the trails are great! Paved and well kept, its a fantastic option when dog walks around the neighborhood get boring!
Great place to walk or ride your bike.Scenery is beautiful. The best part is its free!
Absolutely beautiful! Wonderful escape in the middle of the city.
Short and sweet nature trail. Dont expect a workout just cruise the trail and look for wildlife. Well maintained trails. Didnt physically enter the nature center but it had a nice patio area
Nice respite from todays problems. I walk away feeling calmer.
Such a beautiful little nature center perfect for going for a walk
Great little park with a country feeling in the city.
Beautiful trials all paved. Great walk
Great wooded trails to walk. About one mile of trails, and a story for little ones to follow & learn about nature. Its hard to believe you are in the middle of suburbia.
Paved trails. Lots of shade. Nice nature center. Its always our first choice.
Nice interactive trail. The path is plenty wide. Take bug spray it can be a bit buggy from time to time.
Nice little nature center with trails. Not very long trails but great for a quick walk
Great place to walk the dog and meet friendly people.
A great way to get out and get some fresh air
Not that long of trails but very nice black top good for skate boards and roller blades
Very pleased, safe, clean, and so many animals
Just wish the center itself could be open walk was nice
Nice little park for a nature walk in paved trails. 3 different trails from a quick .2 miles to a longer 20 minutes. Nature center is clean with several good exhibits. Signs along the Sensory Trail for kids to learn from.
I do not think a lot of people realize how beautiful this nature center is. I discovered it on a photoshoot one day, but I have been living in the area for years now without knowing of its existence. If you never heard of it you will probably never go there because of how closed off it is. Theres a small entrance and a narrow trail that leads to the center itself. You can walk, jog, by yourself or with your dog throughout the area. The lighting is amazing and its nice for taking pictures during a special occasion such as an engagement pre shoot or wedding pre shoot. Where you park your car and the entrance of the trail itself are but a short distance. I would recommend going in and checking the place out during the morning or before it turns dark since its a bit closed off it might not be the safest (standard safety assumption it could be well patrolled but not sure since it was my first time.)
Great place for walking.
Red Oaks Park was pretty, and very nice if youre into urban parks with shorter walking distances. All of the paths are paved, and all together are about a mile and a half. My husband and I did them twice since we usually like to do at least three miles. We saw lots of squirrels and blue jays, and the occasional cardinal. Overall nice, but I prefer longer walking distances.
They had an awesome presentation about opossums! Then they made a bookmark with animal prints and got to pet clementine, who is a rescued possum. They have all sorts of little creatures you can look at and the people are so nice and informative! I highly recommend!
Nice paved trails that are well maintained
I hike here about once a week in warm weather. Great trails and a cozy nature center
Very easy paved walking trails
I cant imagine a better place to teach a kid to ride a bike! Never have to worry about a car for a second and the trails are very freshly paved and remarkably smooth.
Wonderful and easy paved trail! Nature center was great as well. Adequate parking. A hidden gem.
Great place ti take the kids I love the updated design
Excellent clean and safe nature center. Not the biggest but nice paved trails so can go right after rain. Highly recommend.
Went for a crisp fall walk through the woods with my fiance and had a wonderful time, staff was super friendly and helpful, signs and maps were clear and concise, plus the paths were very well cared for.
1.3 mile path. Small part but some spots only nose you hear is nature. Really noisy on North end of Park due to traffic noise from 13 mile. This is a good area so the spring time has lots of standing water and this lots of mosquitos. Overall a great little Park in the city that allows you to connect with nature.
Great trails to walk.
Super clean.
The best kept secret in Madison Hts. I have been going my whole life and now I get to share it with my daughter!!! It is well worth it!! Very peaceful and everyone is very friendly. The programs for the children are great!!! If you get to meet Jean, George, Benji or Sara, it will be even a greater experience
Great little walking park! Went with my daughter and grandkids. Easy walking, nice pathway.
It was the perfect afternoon. We had a wonderful time. Thanks.
Just go, you wont be disappointed !
Its a nice place to take the kids or walk around with your honey hand in hand. Its a little forest right in the neighborhood.
A beautiful place to come and enjoy a walk or a bike ride through the trails. A nice nature center to walk and see a variety of turtles. Plus frogs, garter snake, and cockroaches.
Such a wonderful trail. Well maintained.Great for all ages. I like to walk my dog in this beautiful, peaceful trail.
Beautiful green space with a track for nature walks. Peaceful.
Naturalistic
Nice place to take a walk or walk your pet. If you go on the morning around 6:30a.m you might see the deers walking around.
Its a great place for a quiet walk. With lots of nature to see.
My family and i had a nice little walk here one day. It took us about an hour or so to pull our son in a wagon down all 3 trails (which are paved). Very clean and taken care of.
A nice place to take a walk. There are paved paths throughout. They are in good shape so it is pretty wheelchair/walker friendly. The little nature center is great for kids.
We had a great time at the Nature Center. A nice walk it is adjacent to a school with a playground. We visited early in the spring so the nature was limited.
Nice short paved trail
Beautiful place!
I WAS A GUEST OF A FRIEND OF MINE WHO PURCHASES THE ANNUAL PARKING PERMIT * IT WAS SUCH A DELIGHTFUL VISIT - I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH * THE NATURE CENTER BUILDING WAS VERY INTERESTING & HAD DISPLAYS OF SEVERAL ANIMALS IN THEIR HABITAT & INFORMATIVE POSTERS ABOUT OTHER ANIMALS IN THE WILD * THE VOLUNTEER GREETER WAS THE MOST DELIGHTFUL LADY & SHARED WITH US WHAT A GOLD STAR MOTHER IS - VERY INSPIRING & TOUCHING *
Wonderful place to bring the family
Very peaceful to walk around the trails.
Great nice and easy walk
A little slice of nature in the city. About a mile worth of trails and you can see a lot of animals.
It always amazes me that this awesome little park/reserve is right in the middle of a metro if 4.5 million people, in Madison Heights. Like I know Im surrounded by city, but when Im here, I feel like Im in nature. I love this park, its little trails, and its convenience.
It was peaceful and relaxing
This place is good, but the walkway is short. Its good for a little exercise or a brisk walk.
The trails are paved. The 1/2 mile trails are perfect for my young toddlers to enjoy.
A wee nature park practically in our back yard. A well-kept secret!
My young boys love all the critters in their nature center.
I came here with my kids recently, and we stayed for about an hour. You have to pay to park, which is $5/day or $30 for an annual parking pass for Oakland County parks. Parking is the only charge. There is a small indoor building with fish, snakes, and turtles, and it also has a fireplace, which is nice in the winter. The lady working there was very nice and informative. Outside are two paved trails that circle through the woods. There is a small vernal pond, which means that it dries up during part of the year. We didnt see much wildlife besides a few birds and squirrels. But they say theres a red fox that lives there. Since its paved, we never attempted to leave the path and explore. We like to go to Tenhave Woods in Royal Oak, which is dirt paths, and spend lots more time exploring. Red Oaks seems more like a place for runners and dog walkers, but we still enjoyed it and will likely return (especially since we purchased the annual pass! )
We visited as part of a cub scout badge program with our Tiger den (1st graders). The program was really well done! Our boys had a great time and maybe even learned a thing or two. I am glad we had the opportunity to do this!
Beautiful, clean, and a lot of friendly faces
Took my wolf den to the nature center to earn their grow something loop. The staff is very organized, friendly, and the boys and a wonderful time. I highly recommend going.
Fun place for walks or biking!
Its a quiet walk in the woods; the only one I can find in the suburban areas. A good daily walk, occasionally joined by a deer. Weather permitting I walk there often.
I like because its close but makes you feel like youre out in the woods.
Very pleasant people and great events and crafts for the children
